Giant Rodents Return To The Santa Barbara Zoo

G

iant rodent lovers, rejoice! The capybaras are back. After a four-year hiatus, capybaras have returned to the Zoo. The two females are sisters who were born August 5, 2018, at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Capybaras (affectionately known as “capys”) hail from Central and South America. They are most active on land, but are also skilled and graceful swimmers. Their partially-webbed feet allow them to dive deep and swim underwater for long distances, and they often hide in floating vegetation with only their eyes, ears, and nostrils sticking out of the water – much like hippos. Water is also where capys prefer to poop, as they rarely “go” on land. Weighing in at 100-150 pounds and standing roughly 2.5 feet tall, capys have been called “swamp hogs” and “water pigs.” But these rodents are more closely related to guinea pigs than pigs you might find on a farm. Just like porcupines and squirrels (also rodents!), capybaras’ long front teeth continue to grow throughout their lifetime, as they wear down from chewing food. Visit the capybaras near the Zoo Train station and anteater exhibit. The Santa Barbara Zoo is also home to 500+ other animals, including gorillas, giraffes, alligators, and more. Attractions include the Zoo Train, which circles the park’s perimeter, giraffe feeding, rock wall climbing, behind-the-scenes tours, barnyard feeding, and more. The team at the Zoo is committed to making the world a better place through involvement in local and global wildlife conservation efforts. Programs include the California Condor Recovery Program, Island Fox Recovery, Sea Otter Conservation, Snowy Plover Conservation, and conservation of Red-Legged Frogs. When you visit the Santa Barbara Zoo, you help make a difference to your community and your planet. The Santa Barbara Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit www.sbzoo.org 20

Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery Where Art Lovers Converge to Discuss, Discover, and Acquire

S

ince 1984, Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery has been one of the West Coast’s most important destinations for collectors of important American art. With three large exhibition spaces, the gallery stages 20 separate exhibitions each year, from an inventory of over 3000 works. If you are looking for something specific, from historic American Impressionism, or vintage Midcentury Modernism, to contemporary realism, or kinetic sculpture, Sullivan Goss has a wide variety of exciting examples. “We’re lucky to be in the heart of the Art District, right across from the Museum of Art,” says owner Nathan Vonk. “Over the years, both visitors and locals have come to think of us as an institution, much like our neighbor across the street. We have a strong academic component to our program, including scholarship, documentation, and publishing which compliments each exhibition.” It is not uncommon for first time visitors to ask if they have to pay admission to enter, but the staff also work very hard to make everyone feel welcome and are excited to answer any questions that they might have. “I love walking people through the exhibitions,” says Vonk, “because each piece and each artist has a story and that is part of what you acquire when you buy a really great work of art.” It is not unusual for Sullivan Goss to have works on the wall that would be right at home in a museum. It is a constant reminder that you don’t have to travel to a large city to find artistic treasures that might be in your family for generations to come. Last year alone they offered works by David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, Ken Price, Thomas Moran, Colin Campbell Cooper, Granville Redmond, amongst others. But it might be the newly discovered artist that will make the most lasting effect. The gallery represents 30 unique and exciting artists and artists’ estates, so there is always something new and surprising to see as exhibitions change monthly. You can visit them from 10 - 5:30 daily, and are encouraged to preview their collection at sullivangoss.com. 26

farmer Boy reStaurant A Shiny New Look

F

irst of all, if you’re craving breakfast and you’re in the U.S.A., how can you not be enticed by a place called Farmer Boy? You picture that boy (clad in overalls, whistling that catchy Mayberry tune) coming in with eggs straight from the henhouse, bacon direct from the smokehouse, etc. The beloved San Roque café was purchased by the Bennett family (also owners of Brophy Brothers, Benchmark Eatery and On The Alley) in 2014 and closed for a lengthy overhaul. Longtime fans return now say they are pleased by the shiny new, modern feel. I ventured in on a recent Saturday morning and the place was packed, full of chatter and laughter. Nice vibe. Found a seat next to a guy with white hair and a white beard. Soon a server appeared with a cheery “Look what I have for you!” Almost like Christmas. And, feast like, his breakfast included two eggs over easy, bacon, English muffin and the biggest cinnamon bun I’ve ever seen, slathered in icing. Did I mention that he was fairly slender? Must be a distance runner, I muttered to myself. My more modest breakfast arrived in short order and it was top notch. Eggs, two rashers of bacon, hash browns (great), English muffin, and cup of Joe, (decaf.) Other plates I saw being delivered to the counter included fried chicken and waffles, steak and eggs, pancakes (which, by the way, are only $7 for a full stack) and a variety of great looking omelettes. Another popular item, according to some others seated at the counter, are the crab cakes which feature two poached eggs on an English muffin with a citrus hollandaise. Might have to try that next time. Eventually, my neighbor finished (defeated by that massive cinnamon bun; he left a quarter of it) and I asked for his review. Basically; All around pretty good, and that he’d be coming back. I returned for lunch a couple of days later with my cousins, longtime Farmer Boy fans who were greeted fondly by a waitress from the old days. There’s your hometown touch. He had fish and chips, she had a BLT. Smilles all around. – By Jeff Miller Serving breakfast and lunch. 3427 State St, 805-845-6749 www.farmerboy.com 48 3 4

Boathouse RestauRant

P

Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach

erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s most exciting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coastal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town. One is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurrence, and, in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Grilled Mahi Mahi Salad with pickled ginger and crispy wontons, or the Boathouse Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Lobster & Truffle Mac & Cheese is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Crispy Pork Belly & Sea Scallops, Steamed Black Mussels and Pan Roasted Crab Cakes are the start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Pacific Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as New York Steaks and the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with red wine-shallot butter and scallion mashed potatoes. End it with Banana’s Foster or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. Call (805) 898-2628 for reservations.

A GOLFER’S DREAM!

Santa Barbara Area Golf Courses Have Something For Everyone

W

hen it comes to golf, Santa Barbara has something to offer for everyone! The County of Santa Barbara is quickly becoming known as a premier golf destination. With a wonderful portfolio of courses, there is nothing the golfing world can’t find. From a championship golf course ranked among the best in the world to a golf course that is perfect for the beginner. With green fees ranging from $12 to $149 golfers have financial options as well. If golfers desire nine-holes, 18-holes, tournament play, banquet facilities, name brand merchandise, PGA golf instruction, junior clinics, practice facilities, club fitting or a gourmet meal after their round, they can find it here in this diverse golf destination. Sandpiper golf course opened in 1972 and has been known as “one of the best” ever since. It earned this reputation by providing golfers with championship golf on the ocean’s edge. Patrons can literally step off the green of the Par 3, 11th Hole and on to the sand of the scenic Santa Barbara coastline. This stunning combination of championship golf and beauty has inspired awe in its patrons for 35 years. Glen Annie Golf Club, Santa Barbara’s newest golf gem, opened its doors in December of 1997 cementing the area’s reputation as a premier golf destination. This challenging layout is perched in the foothills above Santa Barbara with breathtaking ocean and mountain views. A beautiful clubhouse with its award winning architecture 68 60 6 0

Glen Annie Golf Course

provides its guests with acclaimed cuisine and looks out onto this magnificent landscape & a cascading lake. Just a half hour up the highway the River Course at the Alisal presents golfers with breathtaking panoramas of the brilliant hues of the foothills and the Santa Ynez Mountains and Valley. This challenging layout follows the meandering path of the Santa Ynez River and features four lakes and a green that is nearly surrounded by water. After a rewarding round of golf, guests can retire to the popular River Grille to enjoy a drink or a wonderful meal. A twenty five minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara will bring you to Rancho San Marcos and golfers can reach La Purisima in less than an hour. Both are critically acclaimed golf courses that feature championship golf with spectacular surroundings and are well worth the trip. With a wide variety of golf courses that will challenge the best golfers, help the beginners, and inspire the view takers, Santa Barbara is a destination that is nothing short of a golfer’s dream! 61
