Koalas Now at Santa Barbara Zoo
T

wo furry, eucalyptus-loving marsupials are now in residence at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Koala “ambassadors” Edmund and Thackory are at the Zoo through May 2019 to help bring awareness of native “Aussie” species. “Koalas are iconic animals for Australia, as it’s the only place they are found in the wild,” says Dr. Julie Barnes, the Zoo’s Director of Animal Health and Care. “But major challenges there threaten koalas and other native animals and plants. Having Edmund and Thackory here allows guests not only to appreciate these two little guys, but also to discover the challenges affecting their native habitat.” Edmund and Thackory are on loan from the Los Angeles Zoo and San Diego Zoo respectively. As with all koalas in American zoos, the pair officially “belong” to Australia. In addition to obtaining standard permits, the Santa Barbara Zoo made a formal request to the Australian government to allow their visit. Just like in the wild, their diet is comprised entirely of eucalyptus leaves. “Koalas prefer the ‘tips,’ which is young new growth with juicer and softer leaves,” says Dr. Barnes. The Zoo’s eucalyptus comes from plantation in Arizona, where it is grown specifically for koalas. Koalas are mostly nocturnal, but can be active during the day. Don’t see them? Dr. Barnes suggests revisiting them before leaving the Zoo, just in case they have moved into view. Other Australian species at the Zoo include a pair of black swans at the entrance and the laughing kookaburras and tawny frogmouths that share an enclosure in the courtyard. A blue-faced honeyeater lives in the Tropical Aviary and a frilled dragon in Eewww! “CJ,” a sulphur-crested cockatoo, regularly comes out with keepers into the Zoo to meet guests, as do fellow Aussie “ambassadors” – a bearded dragon, woma python, and blue-tongued skink. Don’t miss these fascinating creatures from the Land Down Under. The Santa Barbara Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit www.sbzoo.org. 16

World Class Wine Tasting That Makes Memories!
I
n 1962, the visionary vintner Pierre Lafond opened the first post-prohibition winery in Santa Barbara County and created the first tasting room in the city of Santa Barbara. Today, the renowned Lafond Winery single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are poured at the Lafond Winery City Tasting Room at 111 East Yanonali Street next to the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room just two blocks from the beach in Santa Barbara’s popular Funk Zone, one of the area’s most prominent wine destinations; and, at the Lafond Winery & Vineyards tasting room in Buellton. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. The luminous Lafond Winery City Tasting Room that was designed by Mr. Lafond stocks a variety of local artisan products from fine art paintings to jewelry, gift cards and gift baskets. The spacious tasting room at the Lafond Winery & Vineyards in Buellton offers a view of the vineyard and working winery and invites visitors to enjoy the picnic area under the trees seated at rustic tables that overlook the vineyards, or to relax on the patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people.

Farmer Boy Restaurant A Shiny New Look
F
irst of all, if you’re craving breakfast and you’re in the U.S.A., how can you not be enticed by a place called Farmer Boy? You picture that boy (clad in overalls, whistling that catchy Mayberry tune) coming in with eggs straight from the henhouse, bacon direct from the smokehouse, etc. The beloved San Roque café was purchased by the Bennett family (also owners of Brophy Brothers, Benchmark Eatery and On The Alley) in 2014 and closed for a lengthy overhaul. Longtime fans return now say they are pleased by the shiny new, modern feel. I ventured in on a recent Saturday morning and the place was packed, full of chatter and laughter. Nice vibe. Found a seat next to a guy with white hair and a white beard. Soon a server appeared with a cheery “Look what I have for you!” Almost like Christmas. And, feast like, his breakfast included two eggs over easy, bacon, English muffin and the biggest cinnamon bun I’ve ever seen, slathered in icing. Did I mention that he was fairly slender? Must be a distance runner, I muttered to myself. My more modest breakfast arrived in short order and it was top notch. Eggs, two rashers of bacon, hash browns (great), English muffin, and cup of Joe, (decaf.) Other plates I saw being delivered to the counter included fried chicken and waffles, steak and eggs, pancakes (which, by the way, are only $7 for a full stack) and a variety of great looking omelettes. Another popular item, according to some others seated at the counter, are the crab cakes which feature two poached eggs on an English muffin with a citrus hollandaise. Might have to try that next time. Eventually, my neighbor finished (defeated by that massive cinnamon bun; he left a quarter of it) and I asked for his review. Basically; All around pretty good, and that he’d be coming back. I returned for lunch a couple of days later with my cousins, longtime Farmer Boy fans who were greeted fondly by a waitress from the old days. There’s your hometown touch. He had fish and chips, she had a BLT. Smilles all around. – By Jeff Miller Serving breakfast and lunch. 3427 State St, 805-845-6749 www.farmerboy.com 34

P
Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach
erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s most exciting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coastal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town. One is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurrence, and, in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Grilled Mahi Mahi Salad with pickled ginger and crispy wontons, or the Boathouse Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Lobster & Truffle Mac & Cheese is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Crispy Pork Belly & Sea Scallops, Steamed Black Mussels and Pan Roasted Crab Cakes are the start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Pacific Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as New York Steaks and the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with red wine-shallot butter and scallion mashed potatoes. End it with Banana’s Foster or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. Call (805) 898-2628 for reservations.

Come ready to play throughout all three floors filled with 17,000 square feet of interactive experiences in science and creativity. On the first floor, there are the areas dedicated to Sound, Fantastic Forces, and Tech, including MOXI’s own dedicated makerspace called the Innovation Workshop. The second floor features Light, Speed and Interactive Media, including a small black box theater which houses a variety of rotating exhibitions and shows. The third floor is home to the rooftop Levinson Family Sky Garden and features exhibits that take advantage of the natural elements and stunning views of the mountains, harbor, and Stearns Wharf. MOXI is a place where fun comes first and learning happens in active, exciting, and unexpected ways. Create sound effects for popular movies, build and test a race car, or paint with light – you can do it all at MOXI. Keep an eye out for the museum’s floor staff, known as Sparks, who are there to ignite that learning by sparking your curiosity and creativity. They’re the ones in the blue shirts and will encourage you to experiment, observe, explore, discover, question, make and design. MOXI is now open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the website for any special hours and holiday closures. General admission is $15 for adults (age 13 and up), and $10 for children age 3-12. Children 2 and under are admitted for free. One ticket gets you access to all MOXI has to offer. Located at 125 State Street, www.moxi.org, 805-770-5000. 62
