Holiday Shopping in Santa Barbara The Best Places to Find the Perfect Gifts!
The Best Places to Find the Perfect Gifts!
Holiday shopping in Santa Barbara is a rewarding experience and there’s no greater reward than discovering the eclectic mix of locally owned boutiques, galleries and shops that are some of the best places to find the perfect gifts in paradise on the pacific. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and there’s no better place to begin your holiday shopping adventure than the legendary Farmer Boy Restaurant, 33 Jewels Santa Barbara’s original diner at 3427 State Street, which is just the proverbial hop, skip and jump away from the Loreto Plaza at the corner of State and Los Positas streets, the home of the iconic Chaucer’s Bookstore, Santa Barbara’s much-loved bookseller since 1974 where you can browse a selection of over 150,000 titles in 300 sections; and, the Golf Klub, the locals favorite retail store that offers golf apparel, balls, bags, rangefinders, gloves, golf accessories and state-of-the-art computer club fitting. From Loreto Plaza, we recommend you travel south on State Street to Downtown Santa Barbara, where you’ll find the area’s highest concentration of retail shopping treasures in the eleven blocks from Sola Street south to Highway 101 with abundant public parking off Chapala and Anacapa streets and open-air trolleys, electric shuttle buses and pedi-cabs available to help you navigate the most beautiful downtown on the California coast. As you enter the downtown area, be sure to browse the extraordinary inventory of Old California, Mexican and Spanish antique treasures at the Early California Antiques showroom at 1331 State Street; and, Natasha, the contemporary women’s clothing boutique in Victoria Court at 1231 State Street that specializes in easy care, easy wear casual clothing in natural fabrics made in California as well as the area’s largest selection of Citron and Cutloose apparel and a wide selection of accessories, shoes, bags, jewelry and hats is a locals and visitors favorite. Since Natasha is just across the street from the box office at the beautifully restored Granada Theatre at 1214 State Street, may we suggest that tickets to the State Street Ballet’s December 15th or 16th performances of The Nutcracker, the holiday family favorite set to the unforgettable music of Tchaikovsky performed The Yes Store (Continued on page 18)

t was the Golden Age of moviemaking and Santa Barbara was the center of the celluloid universe. From its humble beginnings in 1910 as the location for early Western thrillers, Santa Barbara quickly became the moviemaking capital of the world and the location for over 1,200 major motion pictures that were produced from 1910 to 1921. In 1913, the American Film Company converted an ostrich farm on the corner of State and Islay Streets into a movie lot and began construction of the world’s largest movie studio on the property bordered by Mission, State, Padre and Chapala Streets which was commonly referred to as the “big glass studio” by the local population. For the next 8 years, up to 14 production companies simultaneously used the “Flying A” facilities to create many of the most popular films of the period and stars like Marion Davies, Lottie Pickford and Wallace Reid kept suites in the Edgerly Arms Apartment 62 2 4 62
Hotel on Sola Street which was built to accommodate the burgeoning motion picture industry during the years when famous directors like D.W. Griffith and William Desmond Taylor deposited $1500 weekly paychecks in local State Street banks and entertained the rich and famous from around the world. By 1921, motion picture audiences favored films with themes that focused on life in the big city and the “Flying A” studios were moved south to Hollywood to be closer to the urban backgrounds that became the most common setting for the next era of movie-making. Ironically, the same contractor who poured the concrete for the “big glass studio” in 1913 won the contract to demolish the facilities in 1948 leaving the office building at 2012 Chapala Street which was D.W. Griffith’s private garage and the buildings at the corner of Mission and Chapala Streets that housed the “Green Room” where thousands of actors rehearsed their lines and the private dressing rooms of the first superstars of the American screen. Some remain among the few architectural reminders of Santa Barbara’s place in the history of the motion picture industry. Today, Santa Barbara’s favorable yearround climate and lush, tropical terrain bordered by mountains and ocean attracts film-makers, television producers and fashion photographers to the hundreds of historic settings that blend the architecture of the city’s past and present into idyllic, eclectic locations.

A GOLFER’S DREAM!
Santa Barbara Area Golf Courses Have Something For Everyone
W
hen it comes to golf, Santa Barbara has something to offer for everyone! The County of Santa Barbara is quickly becoming known as a premier golf destination. With a wonderful portfolio of courses, there is nothing the golfing world can’t find. From a championship golf course ranked among the best in the world to a golf course that is perfect for the beginner. With green fees ranging from $12 to $149 golfers have financial options as well. If golfers desire nine-holes, 18-holes, tournament play, banquet facilities, name brand merchandise, PGA golf instruction, junior clinics, practice facilities, club fitting or a gourmet meal after their round, they can find it here in this diverse golf destination. Sandpiper golf course opened in 1972 and has been known as “one of the best” ever since. It earned this reputation by providing golfers with championship golf on the ocean’s edge. Patrons can literally step off the green of the Par 3, 11th Hole and on to the sand of the scenic Santa Barbara coastline. This stunning combination of championship golf and beauty has inspired awe in its patrons for 35 years. Glen Annie Golf Club, Santa Barbara’s newest golf gem, opened its doors in December of 1997 cementing the area’s reputation as a premier golf destination. This challenging layout is perched in the foothills above Santa Barbara with breathtaking ocean and mountain views. A beautiful clubhouse with its award winning architecture 60 68
Glen Annie Golf Course
provides its guests with acclaimed cuisine and looks out onto this magnificent landscape & a cascading lake. Just a half hour up the highway the River Course at the Alisal presents golfers with breathtaking panoramas of the brilliant hues of the foothills and the Santa Ynez Mountains and Valley. This challenging layout follows the meandering path of the Santa Ynez River and features four lakes and a green that is nearly surrounded by water. After a rewarding round of golf, guests can retire to the popular River Grille to enjoy a drink or a wonderful meal. A twenty five minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara will bring you to Rancho San Marcos and golfers can reach La Purisima in less than an hour. Both are critically acclaimed golf courses that feature championship golf with spectacular surroundings and are well worth the trip. With a wide variety of golf courses that will challenge the best golfers, help the beginners, and inspire the view takers, Santa Barbara is a destination that is nothing short of a golfer’s dream! 61

P
ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery-the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals. Sea breeze and sun complement a charming patio setting at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtownSanta Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are bottled there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Visitors to Lafond Winery & Vineyards in Buellton can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. The Lafond Winery bottlings are also poured at the Lafond City Tasting Room that was opened in 2014 next to the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room in Santa Barbara’s popular Funk Zone. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events.
