n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today 4

one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette

CHAUCER’S BOOKSTORE

Santa Barbara’s Much-Loved Bookseller! “Mahri Kerley opened Chaucer’s in 1974, she is a legend in the California book business. In Santa Barbara she has the same presence as the late Julia Child, a cross between genius and mystic with style and wit.” - Montecito Journal

W

hen Mahri Kerley opened Chaucer’s in 1974, she could not imagine the arrival of chains like Dalton, Crown, Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. For 36 years the chain stores opened and failed in Santa Barbara. But, Chaucer’s thrived and grew into the region’s most successful bookstore attracting locals and visitors from every corner of the globe. “My philosophy has always been that if you don’t have it, you can’t sell it,” Kerley explains, “Our stock is eclectic,” she says. “We do a large business in special orders, because our customers know we’ll do whatever it takes to get books for them.” Ed Conklin shares the book-buying responsibilities with Kerley and helps maintain the store’s stock of more than 150,000 titles in over 300 sections. The children’s book department at Chaucer’s is one of the most popular areas of the store and includes a wide selection of toys and games. With a modest bequest from her late mother, Kerley bought a small paperback bookshop. “I bought it for $35,000,” Kerley says, “and had no idea how to run a bookstore. If a book sold, I replaced it with two copies instead of one. You can imagine how cramped that space became.” Four moves to increasingly larger spaces finally brought the store to its spacious present location, where Chaucer’s has been since 1990. Chaucer’s gives back to the Santa Barbara community by hosting book fairs as fund-raisers for the area’s schools, donates 25% of the profits from each book fair to the participating schools and offers a standing 20% discount to teachers. “We support the schools big-time,” says Kerley. Santa Barbara’s much loved bookseller since 1974 invites you to browse their selection of over 150,000 titles in over 300 sections. Open Monday-Saturday from 9A9P and Sunday from 9A-8P at 3321 State Street in the Loreto Plaza.

The Lafond Winery Tasting Rooms

World Class Wine Tasting That Makes Memories!

I

n 1962, the visionary vintner Pierre Lafond opened the first post-prohibition winery in Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara Winery, and created the first tasting room in the city of Santa Barbara. Today, the renowned Lafond Winery single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are poured at the Lafond Winery City Tasting Room at 111 East Yanonali Street and at the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room. Both are just two blocks from the beach in Santa Barbara’s popular Funk Zone, one of the area’s most prominent wine destinations; and, at the Lafond Winery & Vineyards tasting room in Buellton. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. The luminous Lafond Winery City Tasting Room that was designed by Mr. Lafond stocks a variety of local artisan products from fine art paintings to jewelry, gift cards and gift baskets. The spacious tasting room at the Lafond Winery & Vineyards in Buellton offers a view of the vineyard and working winery and invites visitors to enjoy the picnic area under the trees seated at rustic tables that overlook the vineyards, or to relax on the patio that can accommodate up to eighty people. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events. Boathouse RestauRant

P

Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach

erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s most exciting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coastal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town. One is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurrence, and, in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Grilled Mahi Mahi Salad with pickled ginger and crispy wontons, or the Boathouse Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Lobster & Truffle Mac & Cheese is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Crispy Pork Belly & Sea Scallops, Steamed Black Mussels and Pan Roasted Crab Cakes are the start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Pacific Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as New York Steaks and the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with red wine-shallot butter and scallion mashed potatoes. End it with Banana’s Foster or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. Call (805) 898-2628 for reservations.

The Land Shark

Showing you Santa Barbara by Land and Sea!

P

erhaps you’ve seen the big colorful boat on wheels cruising the streets of Santa Barbara with passengers smiling on it. And perhaps you’ve wondered, “What is that thing? And where is it going?” Well, it’s eventually going to splash into the sea! That’s right, the 39’ “Land Shark” is one-half bus and one-half boat, and is the only way to see Santa Barbara by both land  and sea. Up to 49 passengers are treated to a 90-minute tour of Santa Barbara’s historical landmarks and rich maritime history, which

is personally narrated in a most humorous and entertaining style. Adults are enthralled with the city’s unique history and architecture, while children can’t wait to splash into the ocean. Suddenly, after 60 minutes of land cruising, the Land Shark reaches the boat-launching ramp and, with an amusing airline-style safety and life jacket demonstration by the tour guide, splashes into the big blue sea. 56

For the next 30 minutes, passengers are now cruising the beautiful harbor and Santa Barbara waterfront, with exquisite views of the city and mountainous backdrop as seen only from a boat. The witty tour guide tells of maritime legends and the colorful history of Stearns Wharf (California’s oldest working wharf ), the Breakwater and the coastal oil platforms. And perhaps even more fun is the citing of numerous marine mammals, such as seals, sea lions, dolphins and local sea birds, who seem unafraid of this “Land Shark.” The comical tour guide now displays his knowledge as a marine naturalist. As the boat climbs back to dry land and returns to its original departure area near State Street and Stearns Wharf, it is not uncommon to hear children ask their parents “Can we do that again?” This fun-filled amphibious adventure is truly one of Santa Barbara’s “Must-Dos.” Land & Sea Tours offers these adventures daily at 12pm & 2pm (and 4pm in summer). Tickets are only $30 for adults, and $15 for kids 10 and under. Reservations are not required. A jacket or sweatshirt is suggested, and don’t forget your camera! Private tours and sunset cocktail cruises are also available. For more information, call (805) 683-7600, or visit their website at www.out2seeSB.com

Welcome to rancho San marcoS Where The Golf Gods Play

C

onveniently located off highway 154, just 15 minutes west of the Santa Barbara beaches, and 15 minutes east of the wine country community of Santa Ynez and Danish village town of Solvang, Rancho San Marcos Golf Course delivers a new level of golf course quality and customer service.

“At Rancho San Marcos Golf Course, golf isn’t just a game. It’s an experience.” - Golf Today An instant classic since its inception in 1998, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course located on 300 spectacular acres is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that exudes the understated elegance and exclusivity that only private clubs extol. Rancho San Marcos offers magnificent vistas surrounded only by nature’s beauty adorned by centuries-old oak trees and stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma – without a trace of urban development in sight. This world class course, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains has kept the 660 0 60

essence of the old ranch which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. The simple and pastoral setting combined with the classic game of golf, makes Rancho San Marcos the ideal location to forget the troubles of the world and reminisce on a quieter, simpler time. At 6,939 yards and a par 71, Rancho San Marcos provides golfers of all skill levels such an enjoyable and rewarding golf experience that Golf Magazine named this Ty Warner property one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses You Can Play”, and, Golf Digest awarded it 4 ½ stars among the top 201 golf courses in the United States. Rancho San Marcos and its stunning scenery have also been featured in national advertising campaigns for both print and television. Archeological evidence discovered at Rancho San Marcos indicates that Prehistoric hunters and gathers occupied this region for more then 9,000 years. Descendants of the Chumash Indian tribe, one of North America’s most complex hunting and gathering societies, were active participants in Rancho San Marcos archaeological investigations. For more information about this spectacular golf experience, call (805) 683.6334 or visit www.rsm1804.com.

F

eatured on Discovery Channel as the world’s best whale watching area, the Santa Barbara Channel abounds with migrating gray whales in the winter and early spring, and the giant blue and humpback whales in the summer and fall months. The unique East-West configuration of the channel and the converging ocean currents in the area provide ideal conditions during the summer months for the blooming of large quantities of krill and anchovies, the favored food for blue and humpback whales... and Santa Barbara lies right on the path of the migrating California gray whales, making Santa Barbara one of the favored viewing spots on the West Coast.

The smooth jet powered CONDOR Express,

offers whale watching year round and allows plenty of time for up close encounters with not only whales but a variety of Dolphins and occasionally Killer Whales The California Gray whale migration now numbers over 25,000 animals (they are now back to their pre-whaling population). They migrate past the Channel Islands offshore in December, January and February as they move southward toward their calving and mating grounds in Baja. From mid February through the end of April, the herd travels with the newborn calves close by Santa Barbara as they return to their feeding grounds in Alaska...completing a phenomenal 12,000 mile migration. Blue and humpback whales are regular visitors to channel waters, with pods of animals being 62

sighted during summer and fall months. From May through October, blues and/or humpbacks are sighted in the waters surrounding Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands... and during the busiest times they are joined by fin and minke whales, so that it often is possible to see all four species of whales feeding in the same area at the same time. Such a biodiversity in regards the great whales is seldom seen outside of the nutrient rich waters of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The blue whale is the largest animal ever to be on the face of the earth. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing 100 tons or more, blue whales are larger by far than the largest of the dinosaurs and immensely larger than anything on earth today. The largest land animal is the elephant, weighing about 6 tons. The tongue of the blue whale is larger than an elephant...in fact; a blue whale is about as massive as a whole herd of elephants. Trips to view the whales of Santa Barbara are run aboard the CONDOR Express located in the Santa Barbara Harbor’s Sea Landing dock. One of the most comfortable charter boats in California; the Condor Express features all around seating on deck, a spacious sundeck and a full galley, serving hot and cold meals, soft drinks and a full bar. All whale watching trips are expertly narrated by naturalists providing you with information about the whales, dolphins and sea birds seen on the trip, as well as the natural history of this fascinating area. For whale watching trip information and reservations, visit www.condorexpress.com or call: CONDOR Express at (805) 882-0088 or toll free 1-888-77-WHALE.
