P

ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery-the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals. Sea breeze and sun complement a charming patio setting at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtownSanta Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are bottled there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Visitors to Lafond Winery & Vineyards in Buellton can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. The Lafond Winery bottlings are also poured at the Lafond City Tasting Room that was opened in 2014 next to the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room in Santa Barbara’s popular Funk Zone. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events. Koalas Now at Santa Barbara Zoo

T

photos by Tony Luna

wo furry, eucalyptus-loving marsupials are now in residence at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Koala “ambassadors” Edmund and Thackory are at the Zoo through April 2019 to help bring awareness of native “Aussie” species. “Koalas are iconic animals for Australia, as it’s the only place they are found in the wild,” says Dr. Julie Barnes, the Zoo’s Director of Animal Health and Care. “But major challenges there threaten koalas and other native animals and plants. Having Edmund and Thackory here allows guests not only to appreciate these two little guys, but also to discover the challenges affecting their native habitat.” Edmund and Thackory are on loan from the Los Angeles Zoo and San Diego Zoo respectively. As with all koalas in American zoos, the pair officially “belong” to Australia. In addition to obtaining standard permits, the Santa Barbara Zoo made a formal request to the Australian government to allow their visit. Just like in the wild, their diet is comprised entirely of eucalyptus leaves. “Koalas prefer the ‘tips,’ which is young new growth with juicer and softer leaves,” says Dr. Barnes. The Zoo’s eucalyptus comes from plantation in Arizona, where it is grown specifically for koalas. Koalas are mostly nocturnal, but can be active during the day. Don’t see them? Dr. Barnes suggests revisiting them before leaving the Zoo, just in case they have moved into view. Other Australian species at the Zoo include a pair of black swans at the entrance and the laughing kookaburras and tawny frogmouths that share an enclosure in the courtyard. A blue-faced honeyeater lives in the Tropical Aviary and a frilled dragon in Eewww! “CJ,” a sulphur-crested cockatoo, regularly comes out with keepers into the Zoo to meet guests, as do fellow Aussie “ambassadors” – a bearded dragon, woma python, and blue-tongued skink. Don’t miss these fascinating creatures from the Land Down Under. The Santa Barbara Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit www.sbzoo.org. 22

The Whales Of Summer ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!

T

he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world.

The undisputed star of this show is the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. For pure showmanship, however, nothing beats the friendly and active humpback whales. These magnificent 36

he beautiful exterior of Casa Blanca Restaurant and Cantina is just the beginning for diners entering Santa Barbara’s hottest new Mexican Restaurant-rivaled only by the wondrous interior created by local renowned architect Jeff Shelton that includes such features as a solid black Acacia hand carved bar, hand blown glass bulbs hanging from the ceiling and 5,000 square feet of custom designed cement tile. While soaking in the magnificent surroundings either on the warmly lit fire warmed patio or spectacular dining room, one discovers that this is not just a pretty package - the best reason to visit is Chef Daniel Ibarra’s delicious and creative cuisine being created in the spacious display kitchen. Mexican classics like chile rellenos, tamales and fajitas, as well as specialties like the Nopales Cactus slow roasted chipotle pork and Aztec Carne asada. If Tequila is your thing, Casa Blanca is heaven on earth for you. Nearly 200 varieties stock the bar (don’t try them all in one night) and try 40 40

them in an ingenious cocktail list that includes fresh prickly pear, cucumber or blood orange margaritas, fresh grapefruit palomas and white wine and fresh fruit sangria. Sandpiper golf CluB Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!

P

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of the top 25 public golf courses in the country. Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says Director of Golf, Kyle Oliver. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 660 0 60 60
