Welcome to Paradise

O

n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that

4

attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles,

332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, awardwinning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger

and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Fess Parker, Eva Marie Saint and Jonathan Winters; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; bestselling authors Jack Canfield, Barnaby Conrad and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Fred Couples, Tommy Curren and Andy Granatelli; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Harold Simmons, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 5

PA R A D I S E C A F É The Classic Santa Barbara Experience

E

xplore one block from the hustle and bustle of State Street and you will find the Paradise Café, a favorite of Santa Barbarans for more than 25 years. The classic neon signs on the building’s exterior might be the first clue that you’ve arrived, or it might be the enticing aroma of the live oak grill that draws you to the Paradise. Step into the art deco era bar with the historic mural over the back bar and sit on a vintage soda fountain bar stool to savor a cocktail, surrounded by décor from another time. The selection of wines by the glass is imaginative, accessibly priced and changes weekly. The bartender is glad to pour you a sample if you are not familiar with one of the offerings. Upstairs, the dining rooms are light and airy with bamboo tabletops and original local art featured throughout. Finally, there’s the palmstudded outdoor patio, covered with umbrellas for daytime seating and heaters for evening dining comfort. The oak wood grill is the heart of the Paradise Café. Prime cuts of beef, chops, local seafood and the house signature Paradise Burger are grilled over Santa Maria live oak, which imparts a savory quality that requires little else. 28 42

The two-bone center-cut pork chop is not to be missed. Pastas and entrée salads round out the menu that is served until 11:00pm daily to accommodate patrons of the many neighborhood theatres. Lunch service begins daily at 11:00am, with a Sunday breakfast menu beginning at 9:00am. The wine list, once referred to as “ … the coolest little wine list in California …” by Saveur Magazine, remains a passion at the Paradise Café. The list is well selected with both local and international representation. The wines are reasonably priced and match nicely with the straightforward, high quality entrée offerings. Reservations are accepted or you may choose to eat at the bar where the full menu is available as well as a selection of small plates. So find your way off the beaten path and enjoy the quintessential Santa Barbara experience at the Paradise Café. The Paradise Café is located at 702 Anacapa St., the corner of Anacapa and Ortega. Open daily for lunch, dinner and Sunday Breakfast. Reservations accepted at 805.962.4416. Visit Paradise online at www.paradisecafe.com

The Endless Summer bar-café

A Top-Ten Seafood Spot By The Sea

R

ecently honored as one of the “Top 10 best spots around the West to enjoy seafood along with a seaside view”, in the June, 2007 issue of Sunset Magazine, The Endless Summer bar-café is named for the world-famous surfing film made in the early sixties that helped define the genre; and mirrored the surf culture which has become such a part of the California lifestyle. In the late 90’s, local restaurateurs Steve Hyslop and Larry Stone were introduced to the filmmaker, Bruce Brown, who gave them his blessing to open a restaurant and donated much of the memorabilia that is on display along with more contemporary boards, graciously donated by the shapers who made them, and, décor celebrating the current surfing scene. The large bar at the center of the restaurant features a million dollar view overlooking boats at the harbor, the city, and the Santa Barbara Riviera. Many of the Surf videos that scroll on the TV’s feature local breaks and surfers, and, of course The Endless Summer plays along with other sporting events. The restaurant is framed on either side by two covered yet open air patios, called “Lanais”, which makes outdoor dining a year round option. The South Lanai features two outdoor “Pool Tables with a View” which are a draw for families who are looking for something for their kids to do, while mom and dad can put their feet up and sip a cold one. Both Lanais are available for private parties. The food and drink are designed with the lifestyle in mind also; The Endless Summer bar-café is the kind of place one might drop in to share Mai-Tais and Popcorn Shrimp before or after heading out to the surf or to savor the sesame-crusted ahi on a warm spinach salad before a leisurely stroll along the breakwater. Many of the local fisherman finish their day here; most are happy to share their stories, and you’ll have a great story to share after dining at this surfing-inspired gem atop Chuck’s Waterfront Grill by the boats at 113 Harbor Way; (805) 564-4666. 32 36

When he was a teen, Sam Battistone Sr.’s family left the poverty of a small village in Italy to seek a better life in America. After settling in a coal mining town in Pennsylvania, a penniless Sam hopped a freight train to the West Coast, found a job in a Glendale restaurant as a salad boy, and later met a waitress, Ione, whom he married. They had three children and moved the family to Santa Barbara after WWII. From 1957 until around 1978, Sambo’s, the fusion of SAM Battistone’s and Neal BOhnett’s names, was a growing part of the American landscape that welcomed diners to great food at a great price in cities large and small throughout the heartland and along the coasts. By 1982, the explosive growth from a single coffee cafe to a multi-million dollar, publicly-traded corporation and a controversial SEC decision that forced the corporation to abandon the innovative management compensation plan that had fueled it’s expansion, had taken their toll and all but the original Sambo’s in Santa Barbara had closed their doors. Today, Chad Stevens and his wife Michelle have embellished Sambo’s “good ol’ days” with free gourmet muffins, the freshest ingredients whenever possible, and the best Bloody Mary’s and Mimosa’s in town. Like his grandfather, Chad applies his commitment to quality products and exceptional service to every aspect of the Sambo’s experience by offering “gourmet value in a breakfast version, without the gourmet prices.” Visit Sambo’s for breakfast or lunch daily at 216 W. Welcome to Rancho San Marcos Where The Golf Gods Play

C

onveniently located off highway 154, just 15 minutes west of the Santa Barbara beaches, and 15 minutes east of the wine country community of Santa Ynez and Danish village town of Solvang, Rancho San Marcos Golf Course delivers a new level of golf course quality and customer service.

“At Rancho San Marcos Golf Course, golf isn’t just a game. It’s an experience.” - Golf Today An instant classic since its inception in 1998, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course located on 300 spectacular acres is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that exudes the understated elegance and exclusivity that only private clubs extol. Rancho San Marcos offers magnificent vistas surrounded only by nature’s beauty adorned by centuries-old oak trees and stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma – without a trace of urban development in sight. This world class course, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains has kept the 60

essence of the old ranch which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. The simple and pastoral setting combined with the classic game of golf, makes Rancho San Marcos the ideal location to forget the troubles of the world and reminisce on a quieter, simpler time. At 6,939 yards and a par 71, Rancho San Marcos provides golfers of all skill levels such an enjoyable and rewarding golf experience that Golf Magazine named this Ty Warner property one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses You Can Play”, and, Golf Digest awarded it 4 ½ stars among the top 201 golf courses in the United States. Rancho San Marcos and its stunning scenery have also been featured in national advertising campaigns for both print and television. Archeological evidence discovered at Rancho San Marcos indicates that Prehistoric hunters and gathers occupied this region for more then 9,000 years. Descendants of the Chumash Indian tribe, one of North America’s most complex hunting and gathering societies, were active participants in Rancho San Marcos archaeological investigations. For more information about this spectacular golf experience, call (805) 683.6334 or visit www.rsm1804.com.

S olvang S ojourn A Danish Delight in the Santa Ynez Valley

T

he Danish Capital of America, Solvang, is nestled in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley, surrounded by gentle hills, mountains, vineyards, farms, world class wineries and nationally known horse ranches just 45 miles north of Santa Barbara via US Hwy 101. To the small group of Danish refugees from midwestern winters who arrived in 1911, the 9,000 acres of former Spanish land grant near the Mission Santa Ines must have looked like heaven on earth with its warm sun, grassy knolls dotted with oak trees and sheltering mountains. Today, the local population remains over 60% of Danish descent and welcomes more than 3 million visitors annually to a shoppers paradise of factory outlets and over 350 shops filled with Old World arts and crafts, jewelry, fine leather goods, porcelain figurines, hand made lace, music boxes, collectibles, books, sweaters, candies, imported foods, kitchen utensils and apparel. Food lovers will appreciate Solvang’s famous bakeries and varied cuisines, yet it’s the Danish dishes and smorgasbords that give this charming community its unique culinary reputation. Fine art abounds 62

in the galleries. Painting is typically representational and California plein-air painters, impressionists, noted seascape artists, water colorists, wildlife, and western artists are all well represented. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum documents the life of the father of the modern fairy tale with books, sketches, silhouettes, collages and personal artifacts. The museum at Mission Santa Ines, the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museum and the Parks-Janeway Carriage House offer history and memorabilia from Chumash Indian implements to clothing and furnishings from the European settlers for hours of enjoyment. Solvang is surrounded by a playground of things to see and do. Dozens of vineyards and wineries, such as the popular Fess Parker Winery~ are just a short and scenic drive away; as are several exotic animal farms and “par excellent” golf courses like the River Course at Alisal and the Rancho San Marcos Golf Course. Rich in ethnic heritage, architecture and history, home to world class dining, shopping and accommodations, the Solvang sojourn is truly an unforgettable experience for the entire family.
