How do we Justify our Prayers on Lord Shiva? Ambedkar Veedi: Invariably, Maha Shivarathri comes and goes every year. New temples are on the raise. More than before, poojas and agamas are performed in grandeur. There is no paucity of money for the festival as donations pour in. Pundits and devotees are involved with dedication. Most importantly Rudram and Chamakam are recited with religious fervour and in complete resonance. The wonder of Chamakam is that it praises the natural resources in bounteous ways.

People Count on Roads and Traffic Police on Discipline K.G. Road: Bangalore is currently believed to have more than 35 lakh vehicles on its roads. As large number of vehicles is registered every day, this figure is expected to rise. However, the road infrastructure of Bangalore has not been planned and constructed to accommodate these vehicles and their parking. Hence, the traffic congestion in the city, has indeed assumed alarming proportions. The travel time from one part of the city to another part is taking a long time. It also leads to traffic snarls. We realise that it is not the responsibility of

just the Traffic Police to tackle this serious issue of Bangalore, but the citizens of the city also have got to contribute in their own way, by observing traffic rules and lane discipline and make way for the relief vehicle / team. It is sad to note that the figures of traffic violations, even by educated persons, are very high and there is scant respect for the law. The Traffic Police Department is handicapped with the shortage of trained Police to control and regulate the flow of heavy vehicular traffic in a smooth manner. (Cont. on Page 2)

Dr. D. K. Subramanian, professor (retd.), Indian Institute of Science while speaking on “Ecological aspects of irrigation and power projects at Institution of Engineers, Bangalore alludes to the above fact to infer that our forefathers had concern for environment. What is being done to the environment today? Year after year, the environment is getting degraded, more cultivable lands are becoming noncultivable, progress is happening at a slower pace where destruction overrides progress. Mr. Subramaniam shares his 50 years of experience in Bangalore citing that the quality of life has certainly gone down. He rightly points out that the inhabitants of earth somehow have the attitude that they have inherited it. We only borrowed the earth and possess the highest responsibility of returning it

safely to our future generation. According to the policy document of Indian Government on water resources, we need to meet the needs of present generation without compromising the ability of future generation. But it remains only on papers and implementation is only in our dreams. Today, India has the highest percentage (about 36%) of unusable irrigated land due to various reasons like salinity and poor agricultural practices. People of India used to consume nearly 20 different variety of millets in the past but today we hardly know the names of a few. River Cauvery is no longer perennial as it goes dry for several months. Cherrapunji's name is so famous that any school going lad would surely know about it. It is recognized as the town with highest rainfall in the world. There is no water reservoir or any water storage tanks in this town. In the winter months, enough water is not (Cont. on Page 2)
