Sirji to Bless Our Engineering Fraternity with Honesty and Integrity Dr. Ambedkar Veedhi: Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, the towering personality in the history of Indian engineering was born on Septermber 15th, 150 years ago. He was a gift to India when the West had Reason, discipline, science, capitalism, in short, modernity; and, India was home to ignorance, fatalism, low technology and feudalism. His vision has paved the way for today's development in our country. It is on his path of vision, the list of people like Dr. Varghese Kurian, Dr. K.L. Rao, APJ Abdul Kalam, Prof Satish Dhawan, Prof. Arcot Ramachandran, etc followed in an effort to build our nation. With the effort of eminent scientists and engineers, is our country heading towards in the right path as foreseen by Sir. Visvesvaraya? A firm 'Yes' may not stay as an answer. The reason being, Sir Visvesvaraya himself frequently regretted the lack of discipline, efficiency, and hygiene among Indians. His speeches usually included statistical comparisons to show the advanced state of the West and India's own backwardness. Japan was an inspiration since it had proved for him that an Asian country could also progress through a proper borrowing of Western methods. Padmashri Prof. R.M. Vasagam,

the outstanding scientist of ISRO, Former Vice Chancellor of Anna University made an rd inspiring speech on the occasion of 43 Engineers' Day under the topic “Impending Paradigm Shift in Engineering Sciences and Future Challenges”. The program was conducted at The Institution of Engineers,

Bangalore to honour Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Hon'ble Minister for Higher Education Sri Arvind Limbavali and Labout Minister Sri Bache Gowda were also present on the occasion. Prof. R.M. Vasagam was very st specific in his remarks about how a 21 Century Engineer should be. He cited the words of Dr. Joseph Bordogna of US st National Science Foundation: “A 21 Century Engineers will need to be astute

makers, trusted innovators, agents of change, master integrators, enterprise enablers, technology stewards and knowledge handlers. They should be able to handle Te r r a s c a l e , Nanoscale, Complexity, Cognition and Holism, aspects of emerging science and technology and pave way for as an integrated design field far beyond what is imaginable with today's technology.” Let us hope, late Sir Visvesvaraya bless our engineers to rededicate and make India an economic superpower by lasting engineering achievements.

Bharat Ek Khoj Bangalore: Many people know that Bangalore Palace exists. Many more have heard about it. But only a few have seen it. Why is it so important for anyone to see the inside of the palace? By seeing the palace, one gets to know our unique heritage. The recent inclusion of an audio guided tour around the palace adds to the knowledge of people who come with a quest for knowledge. This audio tour helps us to know the history in a better than what is used to be before. The entry fee of Rs. 175 for Indian nationals and Rs. 300 for foreign nations to enter Bangalore palace is too high. Though the foreigners can afford to pay Rs. 300, every Indian national may not be able to spend Rs. 175. In United States, many of the museums and memorials are funded by taxpayer dollars, so they do not charge admission or entrance fees. Especially visiting such museums in places like Washington DC there is no fee. The native

people as well as visitors get to know the history and refresh the memories. The war memorials are truly heart rendering and evoke a feeling of patriotism. The government spends on war memorials in a huge way in order to honor the war veterans. The ignorance and indifference of Indians about their own rich culture and heritage still prevail. Still many historical places in India are not categorised as World Heritage centres and given the right treatment. Our governments need to emphasize the importance of own culture and heritage by exposing the precious historical places and monuments to our own people. Every Indian citizen, whether rich or poor should get to know our country and its importance. It is a good idea to identify places of tourist interest to attract people but the entry fee collected should not prevent our people from understanding our own culture and heritage.

A disciple of the great Panchakshara Gavai who carried forward his legacy, Putturaj not only rendered soulful music in both Hindustani and Carnatic, but penned literary works in various languages and He mastered many instruments like tabla, staged plays under the 'Sri Guru (Cont. on Page 3)

Be Willing and Open to Learn Evolution of human society is taking p l a c e a t a f a s t e r p a c e n o w. Technological changes also take place at an alarming rate. Longevity of an average human being is on the rise. Hence it is inevitable for us to keep ourselves updated on the fast paced changes happening in the environment. How do we do it? For this purpose everyone needs to make it a habit to continue learning irrespective of his or her age or present living status. Such learning need not be restricted to the formal education path. It could be an informal and personalized learning. Many of us are reluctant to learn from the people closer to us – our authorities, colleagues, staff and friends. Rather than being open to learning we close ourselves off out of embarrassment, fear, stubbornness or pride. It's almost as if we say to ourselves, “I have already learnt all that I can from this person. There is nothing else I can learn.” It's sad, because often the people closest to us know us the best. They are sometimes able to see ways in which we are acting in a self-defeating manner and can offer very simple solutions. If we are very proud or stubborn to learn, we lose out on some wonderful, simple ways to improve our lives. Remain open to suggestions of your authorities or other colleagues. You may raise this question to them, “What are some of my blind spots?” By this simple process you end up getting some good advice. Its simple short cut for growth, yet almost no one uses it. All it takes is a little courage and humility, and the ability to let go of your ego. This is especially true if you are in the habit of ignoring suggestions, taking them as criticism. Suggestions are always to be taken as feedback for improvement. Pick something that you feel the person whom you are asking is qualified to answer. Sometimes the advice we get

usually prevents us from having to learn something the hard way. This column is contributed by U K Athikkal, Life Skill Coach and Certified N L P Trainer. He can be contacted at ukathikkal@yahoo.co.in
