Welcome... It’s nearly holiday season and many of you will be jetting off abroad to find somewhere hotter than here. Although, I generally do the same I have always thought it an odd concept. We moan but put up with the wet miserable days which make up most of our year, then when we are most likely to enjoy this country’s finer weather, we hop on a plane and go somewhere else where we can then moan about it being too hot, and even funnier whilst away is our obsession with what the weather is then like back at home. If you are going abroad and haven’t yet chosen what to wear around the pool or on the beach have a look at our swimwear feature on pages 58/59. Also in this issue...

We travel back to London to experience more of the best 5 star hotels in the city and bring you two more highly recommended venues, The Goring, which has recently undergone a major refurbishment and is most recently famous for being the hotel that Kate Middleton stayed at the night prior to the Royal Wedding. Also, Hotel Café Royal, a luxurious hotel with a glamorous history situated on Regent Street. In the celebrity profiles for this issue we have chosen the two people who won the major awards at this year’s Oscars. Best Actor Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of motor neurone disease sufferer Stephen Hawking and Best Actress winner Julianne Moore for her portrayal of an Alzheimer’s sufferer. A winning trend may be appearing, especially following last years Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey who portrayed an Aids patient and lost 3 stone for the part. In the motoring section we feature the new Ferrari 488 GTB, the replacement for the 458 italia, which will be roaring down a street near you soon. Unfortunately, unless I strike it lucky on the lottery, I won’t be driving it. We also feature the 2015 Range Rover Evoque which has undergone a facelift and been fitted with a new range of engines.

CELEBRITY

2015 Academy Award Best Actor Winner

Eddie Redmayne

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

2015 will be a year that Eddie Redmayne will never forget, the year he won his first Oscar; we simply assume that this talented actor has the potential to achieve one or two more!

16

Though to some, Eddie Redmayne is still a relatively new name, the actor has actually been working his way from theatre to the silver screen for over a decade.

we look at the histories of other actors, some who spent decades to achieve their big break; I suppose we could call Eddie Redmayne one of the exceptions.

Born in 1982 in London, Eddie studied at the prestigious Eton College; in the same year as Prince Wills, no less. It was during his early teens that Eddie made his stage debut in a production of ‘Oliver!’ directed by none other than Sam Mendes, though Eddie sadly never met the world famous director, telling the Telegraph “I was workhouse boy number 40. It was such a minor part that I didn’t meet Sam Mendes.”

He soon landed a role in ‘The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?’, a play by Edward Albee. Eddie’s performance won him his first set of accolades, including the Evening Standard Newcomer Award in 2004.

He eventually went on to attend Cambridge University where he studied Art History. After completing his degree, Eddie decided that he would give himself one year to become an actor, if he were to fail in this time then he would give up. Though this seems like an almost impossible feat when

In 2006, Eddie landed his first two film parts, a supporting role alongside Robert De Niro and Matt Damon in ‘The Good Shepherd’ and a starring role in psychological thriller ‘Like Minds’ in which he played a troubled young man who murders his schoolmate. The following year, Redmayne played alongside fellow Oscar Winner Julianne Moore in 2007’s ‘Savage Grace’ a dramatization of the shocking Barbara

Daly Baekeland murder case; Eddie and Julianne played the controversial, incestuous mother and son. In the same year Eddie played a supporting role as Thomas Babington in ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’. It was here that his talent for period drama’s was discovered. In 2008 he landed the role of Gordy, a southern teenager on an unusual road trip in ‘The Yellow Handkerchief’ alongside Kristen Stewart and William Hurt. In the same year Eddie made a return to period drama’s with ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’ in which he played the husband of Mary Boleyn, played by Scarlett Johansson, who is fighting for the affection of King Henry VIII with her sister. After minor success in the world of cinema, Eddie returned to the stage to perform in ‘Red’ opposite Alfred Molina; Molina

played artist Mark Rothko and Redmayne portrayed his assistant. Eddie’s performance in the play earned him two of the most highly sought after awards in theatre; an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a supporting role and a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a play. It was in 2011 that Eddie Redmayne played his first majorly recognised leading role, as Colin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier in ‘My Week with Marilyn’. Eddie stars opposite Michelle Williams, who plays Marilyn Monroe. The film, set in England in 1956, tells the story of Colin Clark, who lands a job as a production assistant on the set of “The Prince and the Showgirl”. In his time on set, Clark has a brief look into the real person behind the icon that is Marilyn Monroe. 2012 would bring a role that we imagine will always be considered as one of Eddie’s biggest. The film adaptation of Broadway musical ‘Les Misérables’ offered a small handful of some of the most longed for roles in musical theatre; the lucky few to play these roles on the big screen were Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Anne Hathaway as Fantine and of course Eddie Redmayne as Marius. As a child Eddie and his brother, James, would often sing songs from the musical, after being inspired at the young age of 7 when he first saw the show. It has always been a life-long dream for Eddie to perform in the musical, but to attain a starring role in the highly anticipated film adaptation was beyond his wildest dreams.

‘Les Misérables’ was a huge success at the Box Office and Redmayne’s performance was widely praised, leading to an enormous rise in his popularity. All of a sudden young girls, and women alike, were swooning over Mr Redmayne.

Eddie’s new stardom led to the role that would change his life forever, he was cast as the lead for 2014’s biographical film ‘The Theory of Everything’, in the hugely intimidating yet endlessly rewarding part of Stephen Hawking. Mostly based on the memoirs of Stephen’s first wife, Jane Hawking, the film tells the beautiful story behind the groundbreaking scientist and his devastating ALS diagnosis. Eddie’s performance was all but screamed about worldwide and even Hawking himself praised Eddie on his portrayal, telling the actor that he was proud of him. The film is as moving as it is brilliant and Redmayne’s perfectly executed performance had critics applauding all over. In preparation for the role, Eddie had visited a neurological clinic in London where he was educated on the disease and where he met dozens of sufferers, in order to correctly and respectfully portray the scientist. His efforts would prove worthwhile as Eddie went on to win a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his performance in the film. 2014 proved to be an amazing year for Eddie Redmayne, as not only did he play this all important role, but in December, he married his lifelong friend, Hannah Bagshawe. After such a sudden explosion of success, we are sure to see much more from Eddie Redmayne. Already announced is the upcoming biographical drama ‘The Danish Girl’ in which Redmayne will play painter Einar Wegener, the first recipient of successful gender reassignment surgery. The role is, once again, a brave one to take on and already people are predicting a second Academy Award nomination for Eddie Redmayne. It has recently been rumoured that Eddie is going to be joining the legendary world of Harry Potter, though the original series is of course completed, a spin off trilogy named ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ has been announced. Set in New York roughly 70 years before the days of Harry Potter, “Fantastic Beasts” is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same name and follows the adventures of its author, Newt Scamander. It is

being heavily suggested that the role of Scamander will be going to Eddie, though these reports are yet to be confirmed. We personally believe that Mr Redmayne would fit perfectly into the Wizarding World. At only 33, Eddie Redmayne has already tackled and perfected several difficult roles and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for this young talent.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

In an interview with People magazine, Eddie admitted that as a child he had “wanted to be Gavroche,” a young boy who supports the revolutionaries, when he first saw the musical many years ago. But as an adult, Redmayne earned the part of Marius, an idealistic revolutionary who falls wildly in love with Cosette.

Minions

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Inside Out

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. After accidentally killing off so many of them - from T. Rex to Napoleon - the Minions find themselves without a master to serve and fall into a deep depression. But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he - alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob - ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio embarks upon an adventure that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Superhero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure. In “Age of Ultron”, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) and Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver), and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

DVDs Big Eyes From the whimsical mind of director Tim Burton, “Big Eyes” tells the outrageous true story of one of the most epic art frauds in history. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, painter Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) had reached success beyond belief, revolutionizing the commercialization of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The bizarre and shocking truth would eventually be discovered though: Walter’s works were actually not created by him at all, but by his wife Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a colossal lie that had fooled the entire world. A tale too incredible to be fiction, “Big Eyes” centers on Margaret’s awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.

What We Do in the Shadows

A young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family, who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.

In this indie drama, the sarcastically witty Claire Simmons (Jennifer Aniston) is crippled under the weight of her personal problems, and copes in part by being a member of a chronic pain support group. When one of her fellow members in the group tragically commits suicide, Claire tries to find out why. She quickly becomes obsessed with the case, and as her investigation intensifies, her own problems begin to rear their ugly head.

This comedy mockumentary has been raking in rave reviews all over, marked as one of the funniest hidden gems of the year. Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane - like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

CDS

Muse - Drones Drones is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2012’s ‘The 2nd Law’, from one of the world’s biggest alternative rock bands. Speaking about their plans for the new album, front man Matt Bellamy hinted: “I have this strong feeling that the next album should be something that really does strip away the additional things that we’ve experimented with on the last two albums, which is electronics, symphonics and orchestral work.” This may mean we can expect a return to the older, rockier style that the band do best!

Florence & the Machine - How Big How Blue How Beautiful ‘How Big How Blue How Beautiful’ is the highly anticipated third album from Britain’s Florence + the Machine! Written and recorded over the course of 2014, the album was produced by Markus Dravs (Björk, Arcade Fire, Coldplay) with contributions from Paul Epworth, Kid Harpoon and John Hill. Live-sounding, tune-rich and unhinged in all the right places, ‘How Big How Blue How Beautiful’ is powerful in all the best ways. In voice and, ultimately, outlook Florence has never sounded better.

Bon Appetempt: A Coming-of-Age Story (with Recipes!) by Amelia Morris When Amelia Morris saw a towering, beautiful chocolate cake in Bon Appétit and took the recipe home to recreate it for a Christmas day brunch she was hosting, it resulted in a terrible (but tasty) mess that had to be served in an oversize bowl. It was also a revelation. Both delicious and damaged, it seemed a physical metaphor for the many curious and unexpected situations she’s found herself in throughout her life, from her brief career as a six-year-old wrestler to her Brady Bunch-style family (minus the housekeeper and the familial harmony) to her ill-fated twenty-something job at the School of Rock in Los Angeles.

Rebel Heart is the upcoming thirteenth studio album by pop superstar Madonna. After a flurry of unexpected album content leaks, including thirteen early demos in December 2014, the record’s release was locked in for March 2015, and six of its tracks were officially released onto iTunes on December 20, 2014. On the same day, “Living for Love” was released as the album’s lead single.

Books Descent by Tim Johnston The Rocky Mountains have cast their spell over the Courtlands, a young family from the plains taking a last summer vacation before their daughter begins college. For eighteen-year-old Caitlin, the mountains loom as the ultimate test of her runner’s heart, while her parents hope that so much beauty, so much grandeur, will somehow repair a damaged marriage. But when Caitlin and her younger brother, Sean, go out for an early morning run and only Sean returns, the mountains become as terrifying as they are majestic, as suddenly this family find themselves living the kind of nightmare they’ve only read about in headlines or seen on TV. Written with a precision that captures every emotion, every moment of fear, as each member of the family searches for answers, Descent is a perfectly crafted thriller that races like an avalanche toward its heart-pounding conclusion, and heralds the arrival of a master storyteller.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Full of hilarious observations about food, family, unemployment, romance, and the extremes of modern L.A., and featuring recipes as basic as Toasted Cheerios and as advanced as gâteau de crêpes, BON APPÉTEMPT is sure to resonate with anyone who has tried and failed, and been all the better for it.

CELEBRITY

2015 Academy Award Best Actress Winner

JULIANNE MOORE Academy Award winner Julianne Moore began her life in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1960 as Julie Anne Smith.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Daughter of Scottish-born psychiatric social worker Ann and US Army Judge Peter, Julianne labels herself as a “proud army brat”.

24

From early on in life, Julianne’s family travelled frequently for Peter’s work, living in army bases as far as Alabama, New Jersey, Nebraska, Alaska, Panama and Germany around two dozen locations, all in all. Though some would expect a child to resent this, Julianne has always spoken with nothing but kind words about her childhood, stating that the constant moving did not affect her negatively as some would claim. She went on to graduate from Frankfurt High School in Germany in 1979, it was here that she was initially encouraged to pursue acting by her English teacher. The seed was planted and Julianne had her heart set on the profession, though her parents weren’t so keen on the idea, wishing that their daughter would start a career in something more stable and sensible.

In the end they came to a compromise, Julianne attended the College of Fine Arts in Boston, where she majored in Drama; here she was able to develop her acting skills whilst also continuing her education. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, Julianne decided that moving to New York was the best next step towards becoming an actress. It was when she tried to register with the Screen Actor’s Guild and discovered that there was already an actress named Julie Smith, that she had to change her name from the homely Julie Anne Smith to the glamorous Julianne Moore. Julianne Moore began as many actresses do, working as a waitress while avidly working for her “Big Break”. To begin with she focused on stage acting, she quickly found work in off-Broadway productions, such as ‘Ice Cream with Hot Fudge’ and ‘Serious Man’. It didn’t take long for Julianne to move up to television acting, she gained roles in several popular soap opera’s, including ‘As

the World Turns’ a long running daytime show. Around this time Julianne met her first husband and fellow actor, John Gould Rubin, who she married in 1986. It was her role as Frannie in ‘As the World Turns’ that earned Julianne her first award, an Emmy for Outstanding Ingenue in a Drama Series in 1988. After achieving such success on the stage and small screen, Julianne decided it was time to set her aims higher and break into movie acting, at first she was only able to grab roles in small horrors and sci fi’s; it wasn’t until 1992’s ‘The Hand that Rocks the Cradle’ that Julianne was able to land a substantial role. It was after this that she began receiving more and more parts, including a small role alongside Harrison Ford in ‘The Fugitive’, which resulted in Julianne gaining the attention of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg was so impressed with Julianne’s performance in ‘The Fugitive’ that he went

Far From Heaven

on to cast her as Dr Sarah Harding, Jeff Goldblum’s paleontologist girlfriend in 1997’s ‘Jurassic Park 2’. It was in the same year that Julianne played Amber Waves, a porn star with a soft side, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Boogie Nights’. Her performance in the movie was rewarded by a great deal of praise from critics and earned her both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, though sadly, the awards went to other nominees. Following this, Julianne landed several high profile jobs, the first being Maude Lebowski, in the Coen Brothers cult classic ‘The Big Lebowski’. At this point, Julianne Moore was becoming a hugely recognised name in Hollywood and it would seem that her dreams were coming true, though as it turns out her personal life was crumbling. Her marriage to John Gould Rubin had collapsed and was closely followed by a long line of self destructive relationships. Eventually, Julianne was requested to read for the role of Mia in ‘Myth of Fingerprints’ by director Bart Freundlich, who immediately demanded that she take the role, even though she actually argued that she wasn’t the person for the job. Bart insisted that she was perfect for the role and though Julianne was initially reluctant, she soon accepted the offer. It didn’t take long for Julianne to realise that she was quickly falling for the director, and against the advice of her friends, she decided to make her feelings known. Soon after, the pair publicly announced their relationship. They proved to be a strong couple, when in 2003, after 6 long years, the couple finally tied the knot, Julianne and Bart went on to have two children, Caleb and Liv Helen.

The following year Julianne starred alongside Dennis Quaid in ‘Far from Heaven’ as Cathy Whitaker, a 1950’s suburban housewife, living the good life, at least that’s how it seems.

In the same year, Julianne once again played an oppressed 1950’s housewife in ‘The Hours’, she played Laura Brown, a suicidal, pregnant woman trapped in a loveless marriage. The role earned Julianne another Academy Award nomination, making Moore one of only 10 actors who have been nominated twice in one year. After various other successes including ‘Children of Men’ and ‘Savage Grace’, in 2006 Julianne made a return to stage acting; she made her long-awaited Broadway debut in a play called ‘The Vertical Hour’, directed by Sam Mendes and penned by David Hare. Julianne played a Yale professor whose life is changed forever when she meets a stranger - played by Bill Nighy. In 2009, Moore had great success in the psychological thriller ‘Chloe’, in which she starred as the jealous wife of Liam Neeson. 2010 brought along the film ‘The Kids are All Right’ in which Julianne and Annette Benning play a lesbian couple raising their teenage children, the film was nominated for four Academy Awards and Julianne herself, was awarded with a Comedy Film Award for Best Actress and nominated for a number of accolades, including a Bafta, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Satellite Award. The comedic roles continued as she took a starring part in 2011’s ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ in which she appeared alongside Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the film was a huge success and is considered to be a great example of a perfectly crafted Rom-Com. In 2013, Moore claimed a starring role in the film ‘Don Jon’ which was entirely written and directed by co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Julianne’s character was a sharp contrast to the shallow and emotionless image of society that is so heavily mocked in the film, her performance as a woman battling with

grief over the deaths of both her son and husband, yet somehow finding the strength to see beauty in life was enormously moving and widely praised. Last year we saw Julianne play two huge yet vastly different roles. We saw her take on the role of President Coin in the third installment of the Hunger Games series, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman. But it was her role in ‘Still Alice’ that proved to be one of the most important parts she would ever play. Julianne played Dr. Alice Howland, a renowned linguistics professor at Columbia University. But when words begin to escape her and she finds herself growing confused over simple tasks, the vibrant, intelligent woman must come to terms with an awful truth, she is developing early-onset Alzheimers disease. As Alice begins to lose every element of herself that she holds dear, her three grown children must sit and watch as they slowly lose their mother. The film is a devastating and honest look into the disease and Julianne portrayed the character with such raw emotion and understanding that she finally won the award that we all knew she deserved. Julianne received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her part in ‘Still Alice’. The year’s nominee’s made it tough to predict a winner, Julianne was up against some extremely powerful performances including Rosamund Pike in ‘Gone Girl’ and Felicity Jones in ‘The Theory of Everything’. Before the awards ceremony, Julianne herself actually told interviewers that it would be a travesty if Marion Cotillard didn’t win the award for her role in ‘Two Days, One Night’. Though we’re not complaining about the winner, Julianne was long overdue receiving this prestigious award, after decades of proving herself as one of the most versatile and gifted actresses around, she finally has the title that so many long for; ‘Academy Award Winner.’ With other works on the way, including the final installment of the Hunger Games series, we can expect to see a great deal more from Julianne and a little more of that well deserved recognition.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Thankfully, Julianne’s career remained strong throughout the years and in 2001 she landed the highly coveted role of Clarice Starling in ‘Silence of the Lambs’ sequel ‘Hannibal’.

Her husband (Quaid) turns out to be a closet homosexual and Cathy goes on to fall madly in love with their black gardener; the family’s reputation is destroyed when the taboo secrets become public knowledge. The role led to an Academy Award nomination for best actress for Julianne, but once again the award evaded her.

The launch of SHIMMER Saturdays at the Riverbank The musical concept of SHIMMER with resident DJ Damian Wells at the helm is to draw from iconic tracks across multiple genres that have kept the coolest dance floors bouncing for the past two decades and treat them to a relevant house music tone creating one cohesive past, present future sound. You won't miss a beat as Bruno Mars flows seamlessly with the likes of Arrested Development or Clean Bandit merges with Sister Sledge. Whether its a birthday celebration, girls night out or evening with friends, what ever age, this is music to suit all tastes. The best comment made on social media following last weeks private press launch was simply, 'apparently you can please everyone' It just works. In essence the Riverbank is the perfect night out!! Arrive for drinks on the terrace, dine in the restaurant and then from 10.30pm onward dance the night away in the bar. You will be amazed at the transformation once the venue gets its SHIMMER on! Part of Riverbanks recent refurbishment was in preparation for this club night and its continuing its live music on a Friday night. Expect state of the art sound and lighting and all of the attention to detail that the group who also have, Tom Browns and Farndon Boathouse, are synonymous with in Nottingham.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

To summarise it is safe to say we welcome SHIMMER as reason enough to take the 4minute journey from the city centre or the two minute journey from central avenue to dance the night away. But don't worry, If its a quite relaxed meal your after, the entertainment in the bar doesn't start until 10.30pm

In fact, they have already established themselves as a popular venue for a wide range of events, from birthdays and christenings, to office parties.

Split on two levels (the upstairs having a fantastic outside terraced area) the bar is able to show up to three different games or matches at the same time. Being an Irish bar, they naturally pride themselves on serving a wonderful pint of Guinness, as well as a great selection of real ales to compete with the surrounding pubs - either of which, you may be tempted to enjoy with a chaser from their extensive selection of whiskeys. It is a venue where the customer can enjoy a relaxing pint of Caffrey's with a homemade steak and ale pie, a cold pint of Peroni while watching the match, a refreshing gin and tonic over some bar snacks on the terrace after work, as well as those who enjoy a fruity cocktail, a 'great craic' and a good dance at the weekend. In essence, Raglan Road Irish Bar is everybody's friendly local, set in the historic caves of Nottingham's buzzing city centre. Make sure you don't miss out, and pay them a visit!

Charity Challenge To Reach The Summit Of Mount Kilimanjaro On 31st January, 18 friends, family and regulars of The Plough Inn, Normanton on the Wolds set off on an eight day challenge to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, the tallest freestanding mountain in the world at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), in aid of two local causes; Amy's Fund and Dove Cottage Day Hospice. In August 2013, Amy Duffield, a much loved member of The Plough's team passed away suddenly at the age of 23 from a viral infection in the heart. Since then her mother, Sharon has been devoted to raising money for The Nottingham University Hospital Critical Care Unit who took excellent care of Amy in the final days of her life. Dove Cottage is a small respite daycare and hospice facility based in the Vale of Belvoir. Although they receive some funding from the NHS, they have to self-fund two-thirds of their income. They support those with life limiting and terminal illnesses, and their families in the South Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Melton and Rutland areas. Not knowing quite what to expect the group arrived in 25-degree sunshine at Londorosi Gate to be met by their Sherpa's, guides and support team to begin the trek. Over the next six days the altitude and intensity of the daily routine increased as the temperature gradually decreased. The final days before the summit attempt involved 7-8 hours trekking per day at ever-thinning oxygen levels with a good few members of the group suffering from vomiting and headaches that are associated with altitude sickness. Food was plentiful (although flavoured heavily with garlic!) but forcing yourself to eat at altitude isn't easy. This combined with a required daily water intake of 4 litres per person was very tough going for everyone. In the afternoon of day six the group reached Kibo Hut (4,720 metres), their last camp prior to the summit attempt. After a short rest, a hearty meal and a couple of hours sleep (for those who managed any at all) the nervous group began their summit walk at midnight with head-torches lighting the way. Half way up the steep path of constant switch-backs one member of the team succumbed to mountain sickness and was forced to return to camp. The remaining 17 plodded on with frozen water packs, and after almost seven hours of trekking the sun began to rise and the end was in sight. After a quick cuppa in -15 degrees at Gilman's Point (5,685 metres), whilst taking in the breathtaking views, the group progressed slowly to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. With emotions running high everyone made the most of the photo opportunity whilst remembering why they were all really there. The seven hour trek back to base camp was something that none of the group had really prepared for but with exhaustion, aching limbs and numb feet everyone made it down safely.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Through sponsorship, fundraising and a charity ball that we featured in the last edition the group raised an amazing ÂŁ42,000 that will be split equally between their two chosen causes.

Dr Savan Zala BDS (Lond), MFGDP RCS Savan, graduated from Kings College London in 2004 and has since adopted a multi-disciplinary approach towards dentistry. He completed his Vocational Training in Leicester, after which he spent 2 years as a Senior House Officer within the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Department and Community Dental Care Services. In 2007 he left hospital dentistry to further his skills within a General Dental environment. Here he attained his Membership for the Faculty of General Practitioners (MFGDP) and focused his efforts towards the treatment of anxious and dental phobic patients. Being predominantly within a private dental environment allowed him to fully explore various advanced restorative principles, ranging from simple orthodontics to full mouth rehabilitation cases. Dr Savan's particular interests lies within the fields of oral surgery. Prior to starting in general dental practice, he spent a few years working in various oral surgery units around the UK. This experience provided him with the knowledge and skills to

undertake the more complex surgical procedures including dental implants. His experience in treating aesthetic cases ranges from single teeth to full mouth rehabilitation, with most of his knowledge and training arising from well know cosmetic centres within the UK and the USA. In the past he has taken part in various dental implant programmes, and the most influential of them, was run by the wellrespected Professor Cemal Ucer. As a committed individual to postgraduate education he is looking to complete his Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons (MFDS) and is currently within the end stages of completing a Masters Programme (MSc) in Dental Implantology at Warwick University. He routinely also practices general dentistry, and has under taken various courses within this field to further enhance the quality of his work. This can be seen by the attainment of the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Practitioners (MFGDP). To compliment his passion for surgery, he has attained various levels of training for the treatment of anxious and dental phobic patients. His training has ranged from conscious sedation techniques, to advanced NLP & hypnosis. Dr Savan says “ Over the years, my varied experience within the profession of dentistry, has led me to look past the “tooth” and focus more on the “patient”.

Meningitus B VaccineBEXSERO... Dr Bobby Ahmed is a medical doctor with a special interest and higher training in Travel Medicine. Dr Bobby Ahmed BMedSci BMBS MRCGP DOccMed FRSPH

A huge breakthrough in the fight against the most serious form of meningitis Why is it such a big deal? The charity Meningitis UK, estimates that there are around 3000 cases of meningitis B each year in the UK. Meningitis B is most common in children under five years old, and in particular in babies under the age of one. This disease kills around 1 in 10 of those affected and a significant proportion of survivors are left with life-affecting disabilities. What is this vaccine for? It has been developed to give protection against meningococcal group B disease, the most common type of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia in the UK. There are other types of meningitis that will not be prevented by this vaccine. It is vital that everyone knows the signs and symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia, and gets urgent medical help if they are concerned. Why do we need a vaccine, can't we protect against meningitis in any other way? Bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia are lifethreatening diseases. The only effective way to prevent these diseases is through vaccination. Is the vaccine safe? It was licensed by the European Medical Association in January 2013 and all vaccines are extensively tested for safety and effectiveness before being licensed. How many children were in the trials? Approximately 7,500 infants, children, adolescents and adults. How effective would this vaccine be and does it cover all strains? This vaccine is the first one to demonstrate potential coverage of (protection against) the majority of Meningitis B strains. However, the vaccine will not protect against all cases of Meningitis B, but coverage estimates show that 73% of Men B infection will be covered. Why doesn't it cover all strains? There are many different Meningitis B strains. This vaccine has been developed to offer protection against as many as possible. Once it has been in use for some time, it will be possible to calculate the coverage and continue with vaccine research to improve the protection it gives. Knowing the signs and symptoms and seeking early medical help remain vital in saving lives. Clinical trials have shown that this vaccine (as do all vaccines) stimulates the body's immune system to generate protective antibodies.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Does the vaccine have any known side-effects? In infants and children (less than 2 years of age) the most common adverse reactions observed in clinical trials were tenderness and swelling at the injection site, fever and irritability. Taking paracetamol or similar painkillers at the time of vaccination or shortly afterwards can help reduce the risk of such reactions. Remember painkillers should only be taken as instructed. Can the vaccine actually cause meningitis? Is it live? No, the vaccine cannot cause meningitis. It is inactivated. Why has it taken so long to develop a vaccine for Meningitis B? Most vaccines are made from part of the outer coating of a bacterial cell. The outer coating of the meningococcal B strain is very complex, so the usual methods of producing a vaccine have not been successful. Many years of research have been undertaken to develop new ways of producing a vaccine. Regent Street Clinic Tel: 0800 5833331 72

MOTORS

New Range Rover Evoque

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

The facelifted 2016 Range Rover Evoque was revealed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show – and while visual changes are modest, lots more has been done beneath the surface. The ground-breaking compact SUV gets new Brit-built Ingenium diesel engines, allnew InControl infotainment and a suite of advanced safety features. It is the first Land Rover to offer full LED adaptive headlights, complete with new LED daytime running light signature – which will be even more striking when the vehicle indicates, because the orange flasher now 'sweeps' across the full length of the LED pattern. There are new slimline LED foglamps within the revised front 102

bumper, and a choice of two grille designs. Five-door HSE Dynamic and Autobiography Evoques can also now be fitted with the bonnet vents formerly reserved for the three-door coupe Evoque. It's an intentionally subtle facelift. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director and chief creative officer said: “The Range Rover Evoque first established and then dominated the luxury compact SUV sector generating worldwide acclaim and sales success. “Our challenge has been to evolve the Evoque design without diluting its distinctive character.” Big news under the bonnet is the introduction of Jaguar Land Rover's all-new 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel, first seen in the new Jaguar XE. Offered in 150hp and 180hp guise, the new Ingenium Td4 is up to 30kg lighter than the outgoing 2.2-litre diesel and significantly more fuel efficient. The 150hp eD4 2WD now averages up to 68mpg and emits as little as 109g/km CO2: this version will be signified by 'ECapability' branding, complete with blue Evoque badge on the

rear (normally, it's red). There's also a sub-130g/km CO2 allwheel drive version for the first time. The 180hp version will do 59mpg and emit from 125g/km – making it 18 per cent greener than the outgoing high-power diesel Evoque. The new Ingenium engines have extended service intervals of up to 21,000 miles, which Land Rover says will help lower total cost of ownership by several thousand pounds. The performance 240hp 2.0-litre turbo petrol will also remain; Land Rover claims 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and economy of up to 36mpg. All versions' off-road capabilities are enhanced by the availability of Land Rover's new All-Terrain Progress Control; the 'off-road cruise control' system maintains a steady speed, allowing the driver to concentrate on tackling the terrain ahead. The current Evoque's dated infotainment system is replaced by the all-new InControl Touch system, complete with eight-inch high-res touchscreen. Standard on all Evoque variants, it has smartphone swipe functionality, full app integration and a much more logical menu system.

The interior is upgraded with more upmarket materials, new seats and door trims, an upgraded instrument pack and even the option of massaging front seats – no other premium

Up to 12 interior colour combinations are now offered and there's also fully configurable mutli-colour ambient lighting. A foot-operated automatic tailgate is available as well. A new front-mounted stereo digital camera means that extra safety features are available, including lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking and city-centre collision avoidance auto-braking. There's a driver drowsiness monitor too. The new 2016 Range Rover Evoque model range now mirrors the Range Rover Sport: SE, HSE Dynamic and Autobiography. Jeremy Hicks, Jaguar Land Rover UK managing director said: “The Evoque has proven to be an enormous success in the UK with sales of 62,000 since its launch back in 2011.” Over 400,000 Evoques have been built to date – and 2014 was its most successful year yet, with 125,364 sold in more than 170 countries around the world. “The 2016 model year Evoque builds on this achievement with a new engine line up delivering outstanding CO2 emissions down to 109g/km and for the first time; an all-wheel drive version under 130g/km. “This combined with intelligent and relevant technology will ensure that the Range Rover Evoque is an attractive proposition to both private and fleet & business customers.” The new 2016 Range Rover Evoque, will go on sale over the summer with first deliveries due in August 2015:.

The Game Changer

The New Ferrari 488 GTB

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Behold, the 660-hp turbo V8 replacement for the... Ferrari 458 Italia.

104

Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on the new Ferrari 488 GTB. Unveiled to line up with the 40th anniversary of Ferrari's first mid-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the latest Ferrari made its official debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March. A successor to the venerable 458 Italia, the 488 GTB was developed to provide even more precise and nimble handling, even at the hands of an amateur driver.

Ferrari hasn't forgotten about acceleration either, equipping the 488 GTB with a 3.9 litre, eight cylinder engine that makes 660 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, enough to launch the 488 GTB from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds. The zero-to-60 time isn't quite as indicative of just how fast this newest Ferrari is, however, as the manufacturer also claims that it can run from zero to 125 miles per hour in a mere 8.3 seconds. Compared to the Ferrari 458 Italia that it replaces, that's nearly a second faster. Keep the pedal to the metal though, and the 488 GTB will keep accelerating up to at least 205 miles per hour.If you're thinking that's fast, you're right. It's very, very fast. The 488 GTB also marks a major change for Ferrari in the engine department, as all that power is made with the help of a turbocharger. No, this isn't the first turbocharged engine that Ferrari has ever used in a production car, but in order to increase power and performance while improving emissions, the 458 Italia's naturally aspirated V8 engine had to go. While it's a little sad that Ferrari will probably no longer be making naturally aspirated V8s, it's hard to complain about a change that manages to extract more than 600 horsepower out of an engine with less than four litres of displacement.

When turbo power came to F1, suddenly the naturally-aspirated cars were fighting it out at the back of the grid. The new 3902cc V8 turbo in the 488 GTB looks like doing the same to the supercar class. Its 670 metric horsepower is around 70 more than that of the 458 Speciale, itself one of the most highly-rated sports cars of the 21st century. Harnessing that power, the gearbox features Variable Torque Management to distribute the torque smoothly and powerfully across the rev range, while the evolved version of the Side Slip Angle Control system, or Drift Control to you or I, is more precise, less invasive and provides greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. As well as integrating with the 488 GTB's F1-Trac and E-Diff, SSC2 now controls the active dampers to keep the car flatter and more stable in extremis. Put all that together and you get a mid-engined V8 Ferrari that can lap the Fiorano track in just 1.23. A game changer for Ferrari. Game over for its rivals?

In short, there's little danger of the 488 GTB being mistaken for its predecessor, even before you get the stopwatches out. Inside the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the feeling that the cockpit is

Barring a few examples here and there, Ferraris have always been fast and placed an emphasis on handling, but they have also been attractive. Whether you're looking at the Ferrari 250 GTO, 206 Dino, or even the 360 Modena, it's clear that Ferrari has a tradition of making cars that don't just focus on performance. In order to be a proper Ferrari, a new model should be beautiful to look at as well as great to drive. The Ferrari 488 GTB is a car that really looks like it was drawn with passion. It takes all the best design cues from the 458 Italia and improves on them. The headlights still aren't exactly beautiful, but the mustachioed front end is finally gone, replaced with an aggressive and more attractive grille. The rear end is smoothed out and is now beautiful, while the profile view is curvy and dramatic. The purchase price may be out of many of our pockets and even those deep enough will have to get in line as the waiting lists for any new Ferrari is notoriously long.

Luckily, the appearance of the 488 GTB has also been improved over the 458 Italia. The design isn't a complete change from the previous generation, and you can still see a strong resemblance between the two, but the 488 GTB's look is more refined and is much more attractive overall. Ferrari's commitment to aerodynamics is as strong as ever, but over the last few years, its designs have focused so much on extracting the absolute maximum performance out of each car, the aesthetics have suffered.

tailored around the driver. Settle into the driving seat and you'll find the multifunctional steering wheel with manettino driving mode selector, while the graphics and interface of the infotainment system have been completely redesigned.
