Welcome... With this summer predicted to be one of the hottest on record, you may wonder which part of the country will see the most sun and which exact location will actually be the hottest, well I can put your mind at rest - it must surely be my office. With no air conditioning, I could swear that something is actually pumping heat into it. As anyone will know though who knows me, I’m not one to moan!

ESSENTIAL GUIDE

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes The eagerly awaited Rise of the Planet of the Apes follow up is finally here. A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species. Let Me In’s Matt Reeves handles directing duties, with Gary Oldman, Jason Clark, and Kodi Smit-McPhee headlining the human cast. CITY LIFE

Jupiter Ascending

Hercules

Lucy

From the streets of Chicago to the far-flung galaxies whirling through space, Jupiter Ascending tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born under a night sky, with signs predicting she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labours. This story begins after the labours, and after the legend…

When drug mule Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) accidentally gets a good dose of what she is transporting into her system, she suddenly acquires superhuman strength, telekinetic powers and is able to absorb knowledge instantaneously.

Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules. Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ film Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson, bows on July 25th. Based on Radical Comics’ Hercules by Steve Moore, this ensembleaction film is a revisionist take on the classic myth, Hercules. The epic action film also stars Golden Globe Winner Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan and Academy Award®-nominee John Hurt.

Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) is writing and directing the sci-fi action flick. The filmmaker is responsible for some of the most iconic action heroines of screen history: the eponymous Nikita in the French assassin thriller (1990), Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) in The Fifth Element or Mathilde (Natalie Portman) in Léon. We’re sure Scarlett Johansson as Lucy will continue this trend! Morgan Freeman is circling the role of a professor well-versed in evolution and neurology who Lucy is on a mission to find before she dies.

The Maze Runner

Robert Rodriguez returns to direct this follow-up to Sin City with a script by Frank Miller and William Monahan and based on pre existing stories along with new ones written for the big screen. Josh Brolin stars in the adaptation of the comic mini-series (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), which tells the backstory of Clive Owen’s Dwight character as he is wrapped up in the thralls of femme fatale, Ava (Eva Green). Also new to the series is Joseph Gordon Levitt, who plays Johnny, a mysterious gambler set on taking down his sworn enemy in a high stakes game of life and death. Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, and Jaime King return for the Dimension Films release, with Jamie Chung and Dennis Haysbert stepping into roles left by Devin Aoki and the late Michael Duncan Clarke.

Thomas wakes up in a dark ascending elevator, he has no idea where he is, or even who he is, remembering nothing but his name. The roof of the elevator opens to reveal the staring faces of other young boys. Thomas has arrived at a place the boys called, The Glade, an expanse of field closed in by towering walls; no one knows who they are, why they’re there or the biggest question, who put them there. There are only a few things the boys have come to learn: Once a month a new boy is sent in the elevator. Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. At night, deadly, vicious creatures roam the maze. It’s the only way out and no one’s ever made it through alive. Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

Gone Girl

How To Train Your Dragon 2

Guardians of the Galaxy

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck)’s clever and beautiful wife (Rosamunde Pyke) disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick Dunne isn’t doing himself any favours with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but hearing from Amy through flashbacks in her diary reveal the perky perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

The thrilling second chapter of the epic How to Train your Dragon trilogy brings back the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless.

Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team--the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits--Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revengedriven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand--with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

It’s been five years since Hiccup & Toothless successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snotlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favourite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds.

Now, Hiccup and Toothless must unite to stand up for what they believe while recognizing that only together do they have the power to change the future of both men and dragons.

Amazing Spiderman 2

Under the Skin

Divergent

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of SpiderMan. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

In Under the Skin, Scarlett Johansson plays a mysterious extraterrestrial stalking prey along the West Coast of Scotland. After assuming the appearance of one particularly unfortunate Scottish dame, Johansson’s unnamed alien prowls the streets in a nondescript cargo van, pretending to need directions in an effort to seek out unsuspecting (and lustful) loners willing to throw caution to the wind and accept a ride from the black-haired beauty. Overseen by a male attendant, Johansson’s character is completely oblivious to the dangers and horrors of the world, a singularly focused siren, pursuing one male victim after the next, leading each to a horrifying end inside her slaughterhouse. Until an unusual encounter causes the uncaring predator to empathize with a quarry and question her own place in humanity.

In a futuristic dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions: Abnegation (selfless), Amity (peaceful), Candor (truthful), Erudite (intelligent) and Dauntless (brave), based on their personalities. Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) was born into Abnegation, the faction that looks after the poor and the factionless, as well as runs the government; though she has always been fascinated by Dauntless. At the age of 16, all must undergo an aptitude test to indicate which faction they would really fit. But when Beatrice takes her test, her results show a startling truth, containing different attributes of several factions (Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless), there is a name for this, Divergent. Since Divergent’s can think independently and government cannot conform their thinking, they are considered threats to the social orders. Beatrice must keep her results a secret, or be hunted by all.

Muppets Most Wanted Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine – the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit – and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

Iggy Azalea The New Classic

Ghost Stories is the sixth studio album by British alternative rock band Coldplay. Going into the creative process for their sixth studio album, the band wanted to return to the “stripped-down, more acoustic collection” they had stated their fifth album would be, returning to the original idea of an acoustic-oriented album. After frontman Chris Martin’s split with wife Gwyneth Paltrow, after 10 years of marriage, it has been said that many lyrics on this album are very revealing and really paint a picture of the couple’s’ tumultuous relationship. Released in May

After previously teasing fans with the news on Twitter, Example took to the socialnetworking site to reveal his new LP, the star also announced that the standard edition of the record will feature twelve new tracks, with a further four being added to the deluxe disc.

The long awaited and repeatedly delayed debut full length album from Australian artist Iggy Azalea is finally set to be released in April and features appearances from Rita Ora, Charli XCX and Mavado as well as Azalea’s label boss and rapper, T.I.

The album will feature latest single ‘Kids Again’ and is released on 23rd June.

The End of Dieting by Joel Fuhrman M.D. In The End of Dieting, Joel Fuhrman, M.D., a board-certified doctor and the New York Times bestselling author of Eat to Live and The End of Diabetes, shows us how to break free from this vicious cycle once and for all. Dr. Fuhrman lays out in full all the dietary and nutritional advice necessary to eat our way to a healthier and happier life. At the center of his revolutionary plan is his trademark health formula: Health = Nutrients/ Calories.

Books Mr Mercedes by Stephen King In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the perp; and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Foods high in nutrient density, according to Dr. Fuhrman, are more satisfying than foods high in calories. They eliminate our cravings for fat, sweets, and carbs. The more nutrient-dense food we consume, the more our bodies can function as the self-healing machines they’re designed to be. Weight drops, diseases reverse course and disappear, and our lives become longer and healthier.

The album is said to contain a great amount of “twerkable” summer anthems.

CELEBRITY PROFILE

Jennifer Lawrence

For some it happened overnight, for others it took time, but one way or another, Jennifer Lawrence has become a household name for all.

Oscars 2013

The 23 year old has already permanently made her mark on Hollywood over just a couple of years, making us all very excited to see what the future holds for this Actress. There are multiple reasons why Lawrence has become so widely loved, one being her raw acting abilities, another being her looks, but one of the biggest ones is her complete disregard for keeping up the starlet appearance. She’s foul mouthed, clumsy and a self confessed glutton, armies of young women find the star refreshingly relatable and unlike many role models, actually human. From a small suburb in Louisville, Kentucky, Lawrence was “discovered” at 14 whilst on a trip to New York with her Mother, by a man who asked to take a picture and some details. Looking back Jennifer jokes, “We probably should have realized how creepy that was.” But as luck would have it, this led to her getting a talent agent; and so her career began.

Oscars 2011 With boyfriend Nicholas Hoult

Jennifer’s stunning red Calvin Klein dress was all the fashion blogs could talk about and though it was Natalie Portman that went on to win the Oscar that night, Jennifer Lawrence was now a name that wouldn’t be forgotten. It’s believed that it was the figure hugging dress that got producers seeing Jennifer as a beautiful young woman, rather than the dirty and beaten looking Ree; she quickly attained the role as Mystique, the scantily-clad shape shifting mutant in X-Men: First Class.

All we can do is applaud Jennifer for staying grounded, as in 2011 she portrayed Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. Those who hadn’t heard of Lawrence up to this point, certainly had after this film. An adaptation of the Suzanne Collins Bestselling Trilogy, The Hunger Games was the first instalment of the highly anticipated film series. Some originally assumed these films to be another “Twilight” and questioned Lawrence’s participation, but once the film was released, all fears were put to rest. Once again Lawrence received praise from critics all over and the film was an absolutely roaring success, it raked in more than $251 million during its first 10 days at the box office, besting the competition two weeks in a row.

It was during screen tests for this film that she met her boyfriend, Brit star Nicholas Hoult (Skins, About a Boy). Jennifer and Nicholas began dating in 2011, before breaking up in January 2013 due to busy schedules. Though this broke the hearts of many fan girls, it was only a few months until the pair were thrown back together for the filming of X-Men: Days of Future Past. What could have been a horrendously awkward ordeal for the exes, ended up being what they needed to realise how much they’d missed one another and the couple officially announced their reformed relationship in July 2013.

Anyone who has read the books agrees that Jennifer perfectly captures and represents everything that is the dystopian teen, Katniss; but at first she was actually asked to lose weight for the role. But Jennifer took a stand and refused, she was fully on board to get fit for the action packed role and participate in a multitude of training such as stunt work, archery, rock climbing and combat, but when it came to becoming the virtually unachievable body that too many “role models” have, Jennifer said no. She told Entertainment Weekly, “I’m never going to starve myself for a part. I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner!’ I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong, not thin and underfed.”

There have been rumours and comments on Hoult being somewhat resentful towards Jennifer’s rising fame, but in an interview in March he said that this couldn’t be further from the truth. He stated that he is extremely proud of his girlfriend, not just her success, but also for how she has managed to stay completely down to earth and not let the fame get to her head; a feat not achieved by many.

The actress received a huge amount of respect from her fans for her honesty, being comfortable with your body became an easier thing to do for a lot of young girls after seeing their idol in interviews, talking about how she’d never starve herself and that she “eats like a caveman”. Videos and pictures of her talking about food, it really is her favourite subject in interviews, litter the internet. Jennifer went on to play Katniss with

As Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, 2012

the body she found acceptable, and Katniss Everdeen became the Highest Grossing Action Heroine of all time. Jennifer’s next film was another book adaptation of a completely different kind. In Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer played Tiffany Maxwell, a young widow with emotional and mental health problems, alongside Bradley Cooper, a man recently released from a mental health facility, who is desperately trying to get himself and his life in order. A truly uplifting and honest film by David O’Russell, which received 8 Oscar nominations, including Jennifer’s second, again for Best Actress. This time, Lawrence was successful and won the Academy Award. Though the perfect moment was temporarily sullied by another first, when walking up the steps to accept her award, Jennifer tripped and fell. I know, poor girl. But again, never failing to highlight the fact the she is indeed only human, she got up and played off the stumble with her trademark sense of humour. “Thank you!” she said. “You guys are just standing up ‘cause you feel bad that I fell and that’s really embarrassing, but thank you.” Always busy, by this time Jennifer was already filming the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, in which Katniss is back in the arena with Peeta (co-star Josh Hutcherson). Throughout Jennifer’s on/off relationship with Nicholas Hoult, fans have waited and begged for the on screen star crossed lovers, Katniss and Peeta, to become a reality. But time and time again both Jennifer and Josh have firmly agreed that they are just very close friends; sorry fans, it doesn’t seem that the odds are in your favour. The big budget sequel broke box office records with its release, grossing nearly $300 million in just 10 days. From one big release to another, Jennifer once again collaborated with David

Taking a tumble at the Oscars 2013 O’Russell and Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) to make American Hustle. The fictional story based on true events, stars Christian Bale as a con man forced to work with the FBI, the film received widespread praise along with an impressive 10 Oscar nominations, one being another for Jennifer for Best Supporting Actress. Unfortunately for Lawrence, it was Lupita Nyong’o that picked up the award for Best Supporting actress; though we do not expect it to be Jennifer’s last nomination, not by a long shot. In the few years that Jennifer Lawrence has been on our radar, she has not only won the Best Actress Oscar, but also a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for American Hustle and 2 Golden Globes (Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle). She was also named The Most Powerful Woman in Entertainment Business in 2013 by Elle and was one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the world. If this is what the 23 year old can do so early in her career, we can only imagine what she may go on to do.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

She soon landed a role on the sitcom The Bill Engvall Show and a starring role (alongside Charlize Theron) in The Burning Plain. After years of steady work, Jennifer snatched up the role of Ree in the independent film Winter’s Bone, though many will not be familiar with the film, it was without a doubt the film that got her noticed in Hollywood; but she was in fact very close to not getting the role at all. She was at first rejected for the role for being “too attractive”. But thankfully the Director, Debra Granik, saw past Jennifer’s beauty and found Ree, the daughter of a nomad meth addict living in the mountains. Yes, it is quite a bleak film, one that the producers obviously thought Jennifer wasn’t right for, but once she’d stepped in front of those cameras, not one person doubted this young actress’ abilities. The film was welcomed to the Sundance Film Festival with open arms, and it wasn’t long before Jennifer’s performance was being spoken of all over Hollywood.

Next came what must be one of the most amazing things any actor can hear, you’ve been nominated for an Oscar. At just 20 years old, Jennifer was one of the youngest people to be nominated for the Best Actress Award; and she didn’t fail to make an impression.

Jennifer went on to play Katniss with

the body she found acceptable, and Katniss Everdeen became the Highest Grossing Action Heroine of all time.

LA DOLCE VITA ARRIVES IN WEST BRIDGFORD

Carluccio's officially has opened in West Bridgford, welcoming local residents and visitors for a genuine Italian dining and shopping experience. Housed in the middle of Central Avenue – the area's premier destination for shopping and dining – Carluccio's will offer an all-day Italian restaurant, food shop and deli. Mixing contemporary design with charming nods to modern Italy, Carluccio's is the ideal destination for an Italian coffee and hearty breakfast, right through to three-course candlelit suppers, a family feast, a spot of foodie retail therapy, and even predinner drinks outside on the al fresco seating terrace. The restaurant has seating for 114 people and makes the perfect setting for special celebrations and events.

Interview with Antonio Carluccio Antonio Carluccio, now 77 years old has been cooking for over 50 years and is fondly known as the godfather of Italian cuisine. With 20 cookery books, 81 restaurants bearing his name plus the TV shows Two Greedy Italians, it will come as some surprise that he has never had any formal training to be a chef. In fact he doesn’t describe himself as a chef, but a cook, someone who is passionate about cooking. Q. You were born in Italy, and went to stay in Vienna for some time before coming to London; what is it about England that has kept you here? A. A Woman!, but then your liberty, democracy, you can do as you like here. It’s not like that in Italy. As a tourist yes, but as a citizen it is very different. You don’t have the same freedoms. Q. Who would you consider to be great chefs, and do you have any favourites? A. Raymond Blanc, Brian Turner, both excellent chefs and good friends. They can both cook anything. I don’t have much time for today’s celebrity chefs, particularly Gordon Ramsey. I don’t like the vulgar language he uses, it is not necessary. Q. I know you are not supposed to have favourites, but if you had to choose what would be your favourite dish on the Carluccio’s menu? A. Penne Giardiniera. Giant Puliese penne with courgettes, chilli and fried spinach balls, italian cheese and garlic. We have put it on the menu and donate 50p for each one we sell to Action Against Hunger. We have raised over £1.1 million so far Q. You have written 20 cookbooks, was one more enjoyable to write than the others – why? A. II enjoyed all of them at that time. There is one about Pasta and another about mushrooms and vegetables, there is so many things you can do with those few ingredients. I am working on a children’s cookbook. Q. The BBC Series Two Greedy Italians brought you and fellow chef Gennaro Contaldo back together, how was it reuniting with your old friend? A. We work well together, It’s not scripted, we just have to have more patience with each other.

Q. Finally, I've heard that you have love for telling jokes, would you care to share a good one with our readers? A. “The son of a Mafia boss would like a bicycle for Christmas. In Italy it is not Father Christmas bringing the presents but baby Jesus. The father said write to baby Jesus and promise to be a good boy. “The little boy writes 'Dear baby Jesus I promise to be a good boy for one week if you send me a bicycle.' He's not happy with that. He writes another letter 'Dear baby Jesus I promise to be a good boy for one month if you send me a bicycle.' He's not happy with that either. On the table is a statue of the Madonna, he takes the Madonna and puts it in the drawer and writes a new letter. 'Dear baby Jesus if you want to see your mother again bring me a bicycle.'”

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Q. You used to be a wine importer, do you have a favourite wine? A. I like to try all wines. Wines from Sicily are now very good, Italian also.

CELEBRITY CHEF Review Opened in the summer of 2012, the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill has now become a firm favourite on the Nottingham food scene. Under the attentive eye of arguably Britain's greatest ever chef, Marco Pierre White, the restaurant has built a reputation for serving unfussy, quality food. With steak, pies and 'real' chips on the menu, it's a place where customers can make their visit as formal or informal as they please because as Marco has said, the most straightforward and perhaps most important aspect of any restaurant is the environment in which customers sit. Looking at the menu, which is changed regularly based on seasonality, the objective to serve simple yet good quality food is plainly evident. Starters includes Chicken and Black Pudding Terrine; Crispy Fried Calamari, Eggs Benedict or Crispy Herb Gnocchi. Mains include a selection of fillet, sirloin, rib-eye or T-bone steak sourced from fine native breed beef; a variety of fish dishes such as Battered Haddock; Salmon Fishcakes and Grilled Tuna. There is also a selection of other grilled and roast meats with Roast Duck Breast, Belly Pork and Roast Rump of Lamb on offer. Puddings are just as tantalising with Cambridge Burnt Cream and Banana Eton Mess being two popular choices.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Although Marco isn't in the kitchen, he does make regular trips to the Wollaton Street-based eaterie which is run day-to-day by restaurant manager Mark Latimer and venue director Mark Hands.

24

The restaurant has Marco's personality stamped all over it, like the great man himself the decor is dark and sultry, alive with his unique brand of charisma and tinged with a hint of his devilish sense of humour.

Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill

There's sophistication aplenty – discreet lighting, leather table cloths, art-deco candle lamps and a simple bright red gerbera centrepiece that adds a much needed splash of colour to every table and if there's one thing this venue boasts it's ambiance, in abundance.

The popularity of the restaurant is underlined by the fact that the venue serves on average 500 covers per week with Marco's emphasis on serving simple yet quality classic British dishes clearly touching the taste buds of those wanting to enjoy a lunch or dinner of 'affordable glamour'.

There also the added attraction that the restaurant is located in the same building as the Alea Casino, which enhances the offering with a choice of bars for pre or post dinner drinks, or the choice of gaming entertainment if you wanted to partake, all adding to the experience.

Mark Hands said: “Nottingham city centre was in need of a restaurant of this quality and I'm delighted to say that the people of the city and East Midlands have voted with their feet and made this a real destination venue to be proud of.

This really is a venue that you can visit whatever the occasion. The menu choice lends itself to a light lunch, evening dinner or a sumptuous celebratory occasion. My experience was relaxed, the food was good, great service and a surprisingly value for money bill at the end. I’ve since been back a few times for different occasions and the experience has always been the same, which is a sign of a good restaurant. I can highly recommend that you visit soon.

Wollaton Street, Nottingham NG1 5FW Tel: 0115 872 0602 www.mpwnottingham.com

One reason for its success is the fact that it is not about fine dining. There are no preconceptions on what our customers can order. Whether it's an informal light bite for lunch or an evening celebration, all are welcome. A second reason has been the level of service given by the team. A lot of credit must go to the restaurant team who have been instrumental in holding true to Marco's vision to provide the best possible service”. “As Marco said the food obviously plays a very important role but it doesn't have to be the finest because a lot of his favourite restaurants don't serve the greatest food in Britain but they serve very good food at a very good price.”

RESTAURANTS Review Located in the heart of Nottingham, Jamie's Italian Restaurant is the perfect place for a midday lunch or an indulgent evening meal. One refreshing element of this Celebrity Chef restaurant, is the friendly and relaxed atmosphere, not even remotely intimidating which many people find off putting with prestigious restaurants. As soon as you enter and are greeted by the smiling staff, you're drawn to the wonderful old fashioned design of the restaurant, an array of rustic wooden furniture clash perfectly to produce a homely, almost bucolic feel. Our window table gave us a great view of the restaurant's garden, which looked very enticing; Note to self, must return for a drink and a nibble in the sun! After a quick glance at the drinks menu, our interest was captured by LibertĂ , the restaurants own craft-brewed lager, which was promptly ordered. It really is a great lager, with sweet notes of honey and properly matured for nearly a month providing a mellow, smooth drink. We recommend you try it! Next came our starter of Artisan Italian Breads, which included homemade rosemary focaccia, sourdough, herb grissini, olive oil with balsamic and a delicious sun dried tomato and black olive tapenade. This tantalizing little starter really got us hungry for our mains, fortunately we weren't waiting long before they were placed before us.

Jamie's Italian 24-26 Low Pavement, Nottingham NG1 5FW Tel: 0115 822 1421 www.jamieoliver.com Set in a Grade II listed townhouse, Jamie's Italian Nottingham has the unique charm of the old mixed with the new across its three floors. On the edge of the popular Lace Market area of Nottingham and amongst the hustle and bustle of the boutiques and designer shops, it's the ideal place for a spot of lunch or a special evening out. The beautiful garden, hidden away from the crowds, gets plenty of sunshine in the summer months so it's perfect for some downtime while shopping with a chilled glass of wine or a cocktail and a bite to eat.

With over 10 different rooms of varying sizes throughout the building, Jamie's Italian is a great place for events and special occasions. The menu can be tailored to suit any need, and large parties can even request a private bar. What more could you need?

After having somehow managing to leave room for dessert, we eagerly awaited the Amalfi Lemon Meringue Cheesecake and Macerated Strawberries & Frozen Yoghurt. Now, I must confess, I am something of a cheesecake junkie, so if it's on the menu, it's going to be on my plate; overtime I have had a spectrum of different quality cheesecakes, I can happily say that Jamie's cheesecake is one of the better cheesecakes I have tasted. The velvety lemon cheesecake itself was devilishly good but it was really the garnishes that made the dish, served with light and fluffy meringue, lemon curd and blackcurrants. If you love cheesecake, this is a must. And the Strawberries and frozen yoghurt was a lovely, light treat for those who don't want an overly indulgent and heavy dessert after having a big meal. The strawberries are soaked in elderflower and lemon juice then served with frozen yoghurt, baby basil and crunchy poppy seed filo crisps; this was a unique dessert that we thoroughly enjoyed. This really is a great, welcoming restaurant with delightful food; we will surely be going back for more.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Jamie's Italian showcases dishes that are all made with responsibly sourced, high welfare and sustainable ingredients. Tuck into food you'd find people eating all over Italy, including pasta that's hand made on site every morning, sumptuous antipasti planks loaded with delicious ingredients, and fresh meat and fish dishes.

After an internal battle as to whether I should order Jamie's Italian Flash Steak or the Polpette Reginette, slow braised pork and veal meatballs cooked with tomatoes, garlic and Passione Primitivo red wine, I finally chose the Polpette Reginette; now, having never tried the steak I cannot be sure, but I believe I made the right choice. The pork and veal meatballs were absolutely gorgeous, perfectly complimented by the sauce and that light dusting of parmesan which meant that all of my boxes were ticked.

RESTAURANT REVIEWS Amores in Gedling is just as impressive and welcoming as it's sister branch in Beeston. Perfectly capturing the best aspects of Italy, fantastic modern design accompanied by a wonderful taste of truly traditional Italian Cuisine. When it came to the food, we wondered whether Gedling could match up to the food at Beeston, you'll be happy to know disappointment was not in the cards. The food was gorgeous, we started with Bianchetti Fritti, Deep fried whitebait to you and I, and Funghi Al' Forno, oven baked garlic mushrooms; now I can honestly say, hand to heart, that this was the best whitebait I have ever tired, and absolute must if you visit Amores!

AMORES (Gedling) 65 Gedling Road Carlton Nottingham NG4 3FG Tel: 0115 987 8900 www.amores.co.uk

Now for the main, I had a craving for something spicey, a tomato based pasta with meat, but couldn't seem to find anything to meet such needs on the menu; this may leave some with disappointment, but all you have to do is ask. After speaking to the waiter about what I wanted, a special pasta dish was arranged and cooked just for me, a luxury you don't often come across! The dish was lovely and really ticked all of the boxes! Finally it was time for dessert, I didn't think I'd be able to make room! But the second I saw that Mango Cheesecake being brought to my table, any doubts were gone from my mind; I had to eat this cake! And it was absolutely beautiful. For a full marks Italian restaurant, visit Amores in Gedling.

After being greeted warmly at the front desk, we soon got a feel for the warm and welcoming atmosphere at Oscar's and as we were escorted to our table, we admired the stylish contemporary design of the restaurant; gorgeous and sleek with the odd splash of colour from the pink and silver velvet chairs.

OSCAR’S Main Street Calverton Nottingham NG14 6FN Tel: 0115 822 1201 www.oscarsloungeandrestaurant.co.uk

One refreshing element that should be noted is the space between tables, unlike some cosmopolitan restaurants, we weren't bumping elbows with fellow diners and hearing every word of their conversations; it gave a very relaxed and tranquil vibe that we really appreciated. The menu spoke of Modern British food with a twist, and though you may struggle to choose one meal, it all just sounds so good, you can't really go wrong. Lovely innovative meals that really hit the spot.

.................................................................................................................................................... My two favourite things combined, mouth watering food and genius cocktails; with The Rumhouse, it was love at first sight. Providing table service and a fresh taste of Motown when the sun goes down, the modest yet captivating Rumhouse and it's delightfully jaunty atmosphere has the vague feel of an old speak easy with a twist.

I was delighted to see not only old faithful veterans on the cocktail list but also an array of new and innovative drinks that I was desperate to try. When it came to the food, I momentarily wondered if I'd be over doing it by ordering everything‌ After finally settling on sliders, pulled pork, jerk chicken wings & sweet potato fries, it wasn't long until the dishes were brought out, greeted by the looks of sheer excitement on our faces; the presentation gets 10/10 here folks. The food was absolutely gorgeous, the sweet potato fries were insanely addictive and I may have eaten more than my fair share. And with a wonderful outdoor seating area, to enjoy these delights in the sun, The Rumhouse really has everything; the perfect new edition to the Hockley entertainment scene.

Looking for somewhere to eat out over the summer months? City Life Magazine has sent out it’s food sleuths to review some of the restaurants for you, and they have returned with the following 6 recommendations... From the contemporary, chic interior to the stunning meal presentation, Vivo in Stapleford earns top marks in every aspect. Vivo is brimming with memorable little quirks, such as the constant, tantalising aromas wafting from the open kitchen where you can actually watch your meal being prepared and transformed into the beautiful little pieces of art brought to your table; so stunning you hardly dare dig in! We started with some absolutely wonderful deep fried prawns, stood in a little tower and encased in noodles and tempura, it was a perfect example of some of the fantastically unique dishes available at Vivo.

VIVO 162-164 Derby Road Stapleford Nottingham NG9 7AY Tel: 0115 949 1000 www.vivorestaurant.co.uk

We were then brought our Mains, one of the largest portions of calzone I have ever set my eyes on and a beautiful fillet of salmon with pink peppercorn sauce, cooked to absolute perfection. Finally we finished the meal with tiramisù and mixed ice creams, the tiramisù was decadent without being too overpowering, an easy mistake I have found all too often in some restaurants. Everything at Vivo has clearly been designed and created with an expert touch, we will definitely be going back for more.

.................................................................................................................................................... When eating at The Oriental Pearl, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you were right at the heart of the busy City Centre, with a vibrant atmosphere and fantastic dishes, expertly made with great care and attention to detail, it's hard to believe that you're in the beautiful haven of suburban West Bridgford; The Oriental Pearl is a wonderful gem, a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the City Centre, with amazingly high standards at affordable prices. With smiling and courteous staff who are truly willing to go the extra mile for you, there is not a need left unmet at this restaurant and that's before we even got to the food.

Once the duck was brought to us, it was actually shredded at our table! A wonderful touch that really proved the freshness of the food prepared here, there is no risk of dry flakes of meat that has been sat under a heater for who knows how long! And it had to have been some of the most beautiful, succulent duck I have ever tried, definitely one to try. If you do pay a visit to this divine Chinese restaurant, do not forget to sample the cocktails, dare I say that they may be the best in West Bridgford?

.................................................................................................................................................... Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted not only be smiling staff, but also by the intoxicating aroma of Indian cuisine. After being walked immediately to our table, we sampled poppadoms with a variety of chutneys, each more addictive than the last. To start we tried the Tandoori Mixed Sizzler and trust me it is a must! A range of fantastic delicacies including Chicken Hariyali, Gilafi Seekh Kebab, Lasooni Chicken, Achaari Boti Tikka, Salmon Tikka and some of the biggest prawns we'd ever seen! This dish is perfect for sharing, make sure you get your share of the Salmon Tikka, perhaps the highlight of the dish.

4550 MILES FROM DELHI

Our Mains were just as delightful as our starter, various dishes to suit every taste, accompanied by some of the best Peshwari Naan bread we'd ever had the pleasure of sampling! After the wonderfully indulgent meal, I wanted a light dessert and was intrigued by the unfamiliar Mango “Kulfi”, a traditional Indian frozen dairy dessert; if you visit this brilliant restaurant, I would definitely recommend this delight!

Vintage in the

City

As I wander around Hockley on a surprisingly sunny afternoon, I marvel at how different this hidden gem of a high street looks in the daytime. I was here the night before celebrating a friend’s birthday when Hockely’s night life had emerged. I was perched opposite Oxfam checking out their window display thinking how fashionable it looked for a charity shop, waiting for the birthday girl to finish chatting up the doorman of the bar we had frequented. As I looked around, it suddenly struck me what a great area this was for shopping, an area I hadn’t visited often enough. CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING 60

The place seems just as eclectic during the day; the neon bar lights have been switched off and the doormen have all gone to bed. The little high street is suddenly alive with the possibility of a great bargain. Not just any old bargain though- a Vintage bargain.

Take a wander through the city, past all the global chains (I shan’t name names) where disposable fashion is encouraged. ‘Buy a cheap top or dress, wear it to death then throw it away after six months’ is the new attitude of the 21st century shopper. In an economy that has been struggling and with clothes available at such cheap prices this sort of attitude is understandable, but what if you could find an item of clothing that is steeped in history, made with care and attention and will have a place in your wardrobe for years to come, if not the rest of your life? If one could locate such a garment, would that not prompt better care

to be taken of it and more excitement to be gleaned from it knowing that no one else will be wearing the same as you? When my mum was younger, she had a pair of made to measure leopard print trousers that she adored (not a Bette Lynch sort of leopard print, this was the punk era). As she grew older, fashions changed and they were no longer suitable and she parted with them. Last year I bought myself some Karen Millen leopard print trousers and bought them home to show my mum. They were almost identical to hers from years ago. I wish Mum would have kept her trousers because, as we all know, fashion has a way of coming back to haunt us. That’s all fashion is really; a rejuvenation of styles and patterns gone by. This is why it is now possible to mix your favourite pieces from Zara, Whistles, Topshop, Ted Baker, the list goes on, with a hat from the 70’s or even some 20’s inspired jewellery. One of the most popular vintage stores in Nottingham is undoubtedly ‘Cow’ on Carlton Street. They have proved so popular in fact that last year they moved premises to a much larger store which has enabled them to stock more clothing and to improve their sign age and presence on the high

Flocking to Nottingham also are the vintage fairs. An award winning company called ‘Britain does Vintage’ are touring cities including Nottingham and Lincoln and they are bringing exciting events to our doorstep. This joyous enterprise offers vintage clothing, jewellery, accessories and home ware in amongst live music and dancing with an old English tea room. They offer workshops on all things vintage and they are going from strength to strength with the ever expanding popularity of shunning the minimalistic, generic ways we have come to know in the modern age and enjoying some time in an era gone by. It’s a great day for families and friends whether they be young or old, and it’s something we should start embracing more as a city.

If you go into any of the vintage stores around the city you will find a different attitude in the staff. They are all dressed head to toe in quirky outfits from the stores stock and will happily answer any question you have about the clothes they’re selling. These people care about their products because they are true fans of the fashion. It isn’t like going to any store in Nottingham where, let’s face it, you can sometimes be met with a vacant and sometimes even sullen expression when asking a simple question. Being in customer service myself, I think it is paramount that sales assistants should care and be knowledgeable about what they are selling, especially if the item in question may have a story or a different time period surrounding it. Being the very lucky girl that I am, purely because of my occupation, I have a veritable Narnia-esque wardrobe full of clothes from every shop known to man but one in particular: Karen Millen. However, there are many ways to mix both old and new together. I love my KM dresses and shoes but I often wear the beautiful 70’s faux fur coat that I received for my 19th birthday. I have even purchased some small gold gilt buttons to sew on to give it an even more expensive looking vintage touch. The beauty is, this coat goes with

anything! I also like to team my more mainstream outfits with some one off pieces of jewellery or even a pretty vintage brooch if the mood takes me. Any outfit is easily made unique by adding a touch of vintage glamour and makes you stand out from the crowd. This style of dressing is not only for the young; anyone of any age can get involved. It is only the same as choosing wisely with anything you buy, some things are more suitable for teenagers and some more for people in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s etc. The beauty of vintage is that it is a way to experiment with your style and explore new places and new era’s that you may not know a thing about. If you want to have a look in some of the second hand stores you will have to dedicate a bit of time to your shopping session. Anything worth finding is worth the time spent looking for it, and that goes for more than just fashion. Have a day out with a friend or your mum and have a good old root around! Very sadly, after nearly 34 years in business, ‘Celia’s Vintage’ on Derby Road is closing it’s doors. It is not the end however, founder Celia Radcliffe is exploring other ventures but keeping a very strong online presence for all her customers. In a recent interview, Celia shared with readers that Paul Smith used to wander into her store and take some of the men’s tailored pieces away to decipher how they were made. In a nut shell, I’m saying have some fun with fashion. If you’re bored of sticking to the same old shops in Nottingham then go for it, take a wander up Pelham street to ‘Braderie Vintage’ or into Hockley to see some stunning jewellery in ‘Collard Manson’ or even some second hand bits and pieces in ‘White Rose’ (who incidentally have one store for women and one for men). Fashion is only a cycle, but style is what you take from fashion and make your own. By Joanna Hoyes

You would be forgiven if the word ‘vintage’ brought to mind naff floral tea dresses and old fur coats that smell like your grandmother’s house. Vintage and second hand clothing has always had a stigma attached to it, but that needn’t be the case any more. If you were to take a look around Nottingham today you would notice the amount of unique vintage boutiques that have taken over. Vintage clothing and accessory stores are no longer seen as dark, dingy places to merely glance at in passing but they are an inviting, exciting way back into a time of glamour and heritage.

street. This is now a prominent place for the average shopper to go, some of their stock boasts vintage Levi’s, Ralph Lauren summer dresses and all sorts of other unique finds for a reasonable price. They also stock some beautiful jewellery and have an ingenious way of displaying their rings using folded up books. To discover good second hand fashion you would usually have had to go to the charity shops in London where all the celebrity cast off’s go to live. Unfortunately there is a shortage of celebrity in Nottingham but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t some great finds to be sought out in the humble streets of the East Midlands.

We see photos of celebrities mixing up old and new all the time. International celebrity stylist and writer Rachel Zoe was responsible for the explosion of ‘boho chic’ inspired by the 70’s back in the noughties and it is a style that has evolved and filtered into the high street stores. Radio 1 DJ and presenter Fearne Cotton is another pioneer of the vintage fashion revolution, along with presenter Alexa Chung and actress Sienna Miller. Singer Tinie Tempa is championing vintage style for the boys with his turned up suit trousers, patent brogues and fur collars. And we mustn’t forget about the always 40’s inspired Dita Von Teese who’s every inch the vintage queen from her clothes to her make up to her nails. I think if mixing your wardrobe up with a bit of yesteryear fashion is good enough for these people then it’s good enough for Nottingham and the great British public in general.

BERRY’S NOTTINGHAM NEW STORE LAUNCH Berry's Nottingham have officially opened the new store at 12 The Poultry, Nottingham, NG1 2HW. The previous store on Bridlesmith Gate was only 30 yards away, but the new site offered much greater versatility, in fact 3 floors of display space, much larger window display space and being on the corner, the new store can be seen from 4 directions, which is in no doubt partly responsible for the dramatic increase in footfall. Berry's Jeweller's was founded in 1897, with one of the first stores being located in Leeds. Five generations later the business is still in the family and still thriving, with branches scattered across the country, in Leeds, Nottingham, Newcastle, Windsor and more. Owners Jeffrey Walton and his son Simon are proud to be preserving a jewellers, which boasts an array of the finest diamonds, luxury jewels and leading watch brands in the world, the most exclusive of all being Swiss watch manufacturer Patek Philippe. The new Berry's Nottingham store is 3 floors and includes the largest Patek Philippe area outside London. The whole 1st floor is dedicated to Patek Philippe, as well as a prominent section on the ground floor.

The new Berry's Nottingham store is 3 floors and includes the largest Patek Philippe area outside London. The whole 1st floor is dedicated to Patek Philippe, as well as a prominent section on the ground floor.

Next year, Patek Philippe is delighted to present the Watch Art Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition London 2015 project, which will take place from May 27th to June 7th 2015 at the Saatchi Gallery in London. The exhibition will celebrate Patek Philippe's tradition of high-precision watch manufacturing, an insight into the company's 175 year history as well as its heritage in the domain of haute horlogerie. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the world of the last privately family owned Geneva watch company from the inside. Artisans working live and watchmaker demonstrations are some of the activities taking place during the event next year. There will be 12 rooms (including the Immersion room, the Film Theatre room, the Current Collection room, the Museum room, the Grand Complications Room, the 175th Collection Gallery room and the Rare Handcrafts Gallery room) throughout the entire Gallery and visitors will have access to over 400 exceptional pieces in a space of 2,200 sq. metres. The Exhibition will open to the public, free of charge, from 10:00 to 19:00 weekdays and Saturdays, and from 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays, with guided tours available on a daily basis and in different languages.

The unique Patek Philippe exhibition collection was at the event, including over 100 pieces of some of the rarest watches in the world- particularly the very rare split second complications Ref. 5959P and the latest Ref. 5950A. A few timepieces highlighted at the event were Ref. 5960/1A, 4968G, and 5940G. Patek Philippe's Brand Director, Adrian Lurshay was also at the Launch Event. This year marks the 175th anniversary of Patek Philippe. For 175 years, without interruption, Patek Philippe has been perpetuating the tradition of Genevan watchmaking. As the last family-owned independent watch manufacturer in Geneva, it enjoys total creative freedom to entirely design, produce and assemble what experts agree to be the finest timepieces in the world.

10 Top Tips: Sun and Skin care. Dr Sandeep Varma Consultant Dermatologist Dr Sandeep Varma is a consultant dermatologist and skin surgeon specialising in the early detection and treatment of skin cancer.

With long sunny days in short supply in the UK in recent years, a cold and wet winter will possibly make many people throw caution to the wind and expose themselves to as much sun as they can get should it peek from behind the clouds. Sensible sun exposure has beneficial effects on Vitamin D production and our psychological wellbeing, however sunburn or overexposure to the sun can lead to serious damage to the skin and even skin cancer.

So if the sun does come out what can you do to protect yourself? Doctor Sandeep Varma is a Consultant Dermatologist at BMI The Park Hospital in Nottingham. Here he provides some tips of how to keep safe in the sun. 1. It is important to enjoy the sun when it finally comes out, especially as this helps with wellbeing and Vitamin D production. The sun radiates UVA and UVB rays and these can be harmful when the skin gets excessive exposure. Sunburn should be avoided as much as you can. It is painful and can increase your risk of skin cancer. 2. Try to avoid direct midday summer sun or at least seek shade under canopies, trees or umbrellas. Slip on a T-shirt and use broad-spectrum sunscreens. Seek the shade from 11am-3pm when the sun's UV rays are at their strongest.

3. Wearing a broad brimmed hat or at least a cap will help reduce sun damage to the face. Wearing loose long sleeve cotton clothing will help prevent damage to the arms. Consider loose cotton trousers to protect your legs.

68

4. Getting a tan from a sunbed before going on holiday is a "double-whammy. Exposure on the sunbed has been shown to increase the risk of melanoma. The acquired tan usually means more sun exposure whilst on holiday and doesn't necessarily protect you from sunburn. It is against the law for sun tan salons to allow under 18s on their sunbeds. 5. Using a sunscreen with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a good idea. The SPF is a measure of how much ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is needed to produce sunburn on skin that is protected with sunscreen compared to sunburn on normal skin. The higher the SPF the greater the protection against UVB. My advice is to use at least an SPF of 25. Perhaps consider 30 or even 50. However, an SPF of 25 does not mean

that you can stay out in the sun for 25 times longer than normal. This is because sweat, water exposure and evaporation will reduce effectiveness. Also to get the correct thickness of sunscreen for an SPF of 25 means applying the sunscreen generously and thickly - something that few people do. 6. On the sunscreen bottle is a star rating for UVA rating. Get one with 4 or 5 stars as these give the greatest protection. Ensure the sunscreen is not past its expiry date. Use it regularly when exposed to the sun and remember to apply to the ears, nose tips and back of the hands. Use a lip block, especially on the lower lips. 7. Children and babies are especially vulnerable and likely to burn easily or get sundamage. Use hats that cover the neck, long sleeve clothing or swimwear that has a sun protection factor or close weave. Use sunscreens that are suited to babies or children. Encourage older children to apply sunscreen regularly themselves whilst on holiday and also whilst playing sports in the UK, for example cricket and golf. 8. Reapply waterproof or water-resistant sunscreens regularly if you are swimming. The cooling effect of the water may fool you into thinking that the sun's rays are not harmful until later that day. Ouch! 9. Avoid blistering sunburn as much as possible. 10. Take extra care if have a lot of moles or freckles or if there is a family history of skin cancer. Check your moles regularly for any change in size or shape or colour that is alarming. Consider taking digital photos of your moles to keep a check on them long-term. If you think a mole is changing or is worrisome - seek appropriate medical advice. Skin cancer is potentially curable if detected early and so much easier to treat.

WEDDING FEATURE

What's your gut feeling? With more of us living hectic lifestyles and burning the candle at both ends, our digestive systems can be under constant assault. We might not want to give up partying and living life to the full – but is there anything we can do to minimise the damage?

bacteria wastes no time in taking over - leading to bloating, wind, and fungal infections such as thrush. The latest research is showing that probiotics may play a role in treating allergies (people with allergies have been shown to have lower levels of healthy gut bacteria), and even colds and flu, by boosting a flagging immune system.

The hidden dangers of digestive ill-health

Sweet dreams

There's so much in the media these days about various cancers – but it might surprise you to know that bowel cancer kills many more people than breast cancer every year. Bowel health, in particular, has always been “taboo”, which is why it rarely gets a mention. If you notice a change in your bowel habits, blood when you go to the loo, pain or a lump in your tummy, unexplained tiredness, breathlessness or dizziness, or sudden weight loss, consult your doctor without delay.

Another useful supplement for night owls is an enzyme supplement such as Biocare's Polyzyme Forte. I recommend taking this daily, particularly if you have your evening meal after 8pm - this will help prevent fermentation and putrefaction in the intestines, which can lead to your dinner keeping you awake into the small hours. Prevention is better than cure

Aside from being an indicator of cancer, a stressed digestive system can lead to many other health issues. Alongside the classic digestive system disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), heartburn, bloating, non-specific abdominal pain and constipation, research over the past couple of decades has shown that poor gut health is linked to seemingly unrelated conditions such as depression, weakened immune system, acne, eczema and psoriasis. The gut is where 70% of our immune system cells are manufactured, and 90% of the feel good hormone, serotonin, so taking care of our intestinal health can have a profound effect on our overall wellbeing.

If you're going out and you know you're going to be eating a heavy meal, particularly rich food – or a kebab on the way home! - take a digestive enzyme supplement before eating, to stop you having that “heavy” feeling the morning after. If you're planning a night on the tiles, take Milk Thistle or Bionutri's Tarcyn to strengthen and detoxify your liver. It will thank you the morning after! Something to chew over

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

The root cause

76

Think of your intestines as being like the roots of a tree – they absorb nutrients and water from the soil. If the roots cease to function properly, the tree will eventually become diseased and die. It's so important to keep your small intestine in top condition so that you can absorb the nutrients from your food effectively, and your large intestine healthy so you can efficiently eliminate waste. I recommend that everyone take a highstrength, multi-strain probiotic daily, such as Bionutri's Ecodophilus. Most busy people need to supplement their “friendly gut bacteria” - our natural probiotic levels are easily damaged by poor diet, stress, alcohol, smoking, and drugs. Once the critical balance of good bacteria is compromised, bad

It's so important to treat your digestive system kindly to protect it from stress and overwork. Eat regular, light meals, chew your food well, and give your digestive system a rest by not snacking! Don't eat after 8pm if you can help it, and don't wait until you've got a problem – look after your digestive system while you're young to prevent serious health issues in the future! What can be done to improve digestive health – and should everyone be paying attention? Yes! I recommend that everyone take a high-strength, multistrain probiotic daily, such as Bionutri's Ecodophilus, alongside an enzyme supplement such as Biocare's Polyzyme Forte, particularly if you have your evening meal after 8pm. How do I know what supplements to take? Go to Nottingham Health Shop and complete my online digestive health questionnaire. I'll personally assess your responses and reply with tailored recommendations of which supplements will be most beneficial for you. What's different about Nottingham Health Shop? We're the only online supplements store to focus on digestive health under the direction of a specialist digestive health practitioner. Summer Smiles... New look for the summer, are you ready to dazzle with your smile? ...............................................................................................................................................

Are you going back to your dentist to have your crown/veneer/inlay fitted? Do you know what your crown is made from? At CARE Dental Drs Savan Zala and Mark Ricketts are committed to giving you the dentistry for you that dentists want in their own mouths.

Single visit Cerec dentistry. The best!..

...............................................................................................................................................

Advances in dental technology are making treatments simpler all the time, at C.A.R.E dental we invest in the latest technology, equipment and materials and therefore progress with this technology. For example, C.A.R.E dental uses CEREC 3D technology, the world’s only system for the fabrication of all ceramic dental restorations in one visit. This means that we are able to do single visit crowns and full mouth smile makeovers. We can make your crowns, veneers or inlays whilst you wait, you can even watch them being constructed! Empress Ceramic provides the same strength as unsightly metal restorations, with natural cosmetics. CEREC by Sirona Dental Systems is the world's only system for the fabrication of all ceramic dental restorations in one visit. With CEREC at our side, you can be in and out in a single visit with a permanent, all ceramic crown, onlay, veneer or full smile makeover! For you, the patient, this means fewer injections, less drilling, and less time out of your hectic schedule for dental care, and No Impressions Needed. Most similar dental restorative methods require several visits. This means that on the first visit, you get an injection of anaesthesia, your tooth prepared, an

impression taken, and a temporary restoration put on your tooth. You make a second appointment for a couple of weeks later, get another injection, have the temporary pried off (if it hasn't fallen off already), and have a permanent restoration put on. Why go to the dentist a second time when you don't have to? With CEREC, the procedure is done in a single appointment, start to finish so you can walk away with a complete new smile, all your treatment needs carried out in one appointment! This means we are capable of carrying out a whole smile make over in under 6 hours, with no need for endless appointments, temporaries which may come off- All done in one appointment! We are able to provide dental treatments such as porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, porcelain crowns, dental implants, bridges and replacements for missing teeth. In addition to specialist treatments we offer all ceramic fillings, root canal treatments. We also realise that not everyone relishes the prospect of a trip to the dentist! Nervous patients are provided with the support and understanding they need in a friendly, caring and sympathetic environment, if this is not enough then

“Where individual smiles matter”

Intravenous sedation is also an option at C.A.R.E Dental, we understand your needs & cater to them. A natural, confident smile is one of the most attractive features one can possess. Sadly, many people are inhibited by poor dental health and the appearance of their teeth. Poor teeth and gums can affect your quality of life, your self-confidence and the way others see you, as well as your health. As numerous patients tell us: “My teeth simply stopped me feeling good about myself”.

Many of us invest time, effort and money on our fitness and general appearance but all too often neglect our teeth, gums and dental health. Years of inadequate or infrequent dental care can

“Smiles all round” leave patients with complex dental problems - not to mention an unsightly appearance. And of course time, general wear and tear and old dental work can all age our smile. We love a challenge! Today’s makeover programmes have highlighted dental treatments such as veneers and tooth whitening that can be used to improve smiles. But sometimes these quick fixes are not the best solution. We will always ensure that your dental treatment achieves the aesthetic or cosmetic results you are looking for whilst at the same time enhancing and maintaining your dental health for the long-term. Straight Teeth. Less Time. Clear Braces for Adults. Are you one of the millions of adults in need of adult braces who are unhappy, selfconscious or even embarrassed of your smile? A fabulous new range of outdoor tiles creates a garden “wow” factor with elegant and luxurious good looks.

STEPPING OUT IN TILE! CERAMIC TILES BRING STYLE TO THE GARDEN TOO However closely you look – this ceramic tile decking is indistinguishable from real wood.

“This range of ceramic tile decking will look as good in ten years' time as it did on the day it was fitted. It will stand up to weather and heavy use as well as being the perfect, heat resistant platform for a barbeque.” “These outdoor tiles are made from porcelain, which is one of a hardest wearing materials known to interior and exterior designers.” Wood look alike interior flooring is already becoming well established for kitchens and living areas – and it is the ideal material for flooring the conservatory.

It's that time of year when thoughts begin to turn to new ways to bring an extra dash of style and luxury to the garden. Until very recently few people would have imagined that ceramic tiles would be challenging traditional building materials for a place in the sun.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

But it seems the march of the ceramic tile knows no boundaries and now there is a fabulous range of products ready to step into the great outdoors.

88

The astonishing ability of ceramic tiles to emulate other materials means there are finishes which look exactly like natural stone or even wood – but with a wonderfully tough exterior to banish all the hassles of maintenance which the real thing demands. One fantastic new range of specialist outdoor tiles is already making inroads into areas normally

occupied by traditional paving. Their extra thickness makes them tough and resilient but with the unrivalled style of finish, colour and non-slip properties only ceramic tiles can offer. Barry Slawson, managing director of East Midlands Ceramics says: “These fabulous new tiles bring a style all of their own to garden design. There has always been something of the rough and ready about traditional paving – but these outdoor tiles bring a new touch of finesse and luxury – normally associated with interior designs. It is almost like creating an extra room in the garden.

The ideal floor for the conservatory. This wood look-alike will stand up to the comings and goings from the garden.

It is perfect for standing up to heavy traffic coming in and out of the garden and the muddy feet of children and pets. It is easily cleaned with just a wipe. Barry Slawson says: “This is the perfect time to catch up with everything ceramic tiles have to offer for the home and garden, with a visit to our beautifully appointed showrooms.”

“They are the perfect way to freshen up any garden and they certainly add a glamorous “wow” factor. “There is also a new range of ceramic tile wood look-alike decking, which is delighting gardeners who admire the look and feel of the traditional deck but who may be put off by effort and expense which goes into their upkeep.

Looking for more space? Considering a conservatory? Let Trent Valley design a beautiful glazed extension for you. Trent Valley provide some pointers on what decisions you need to make.

was that they were only comfortable to use for ½ the year; on sunny days the room becomes far too hot and in the depths of winter it's far too cold.

There are a number of classic Conservatory options with traditional shapes like P shape, T shape, Victorian, Edwardian and Orangery. Most people opt for a simple rectangular Edwardian style which creates a very useable room space.

With design and technology improvements in recent years we can build a conservatory that is as thermally efficient as a traditional single storey extension.

All our conservatories are bespoke designed for you so you can pretty much have anything you want.

Things to consider: What do you want to use the conservatory for?  If it's a dining room, often you will be using it to dine in the evening so the conservatory will need to have adequate lighting.  If it's an additional sitting room are you planning on using existing furniture and do you want walls or window sills to dress?

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Remember it's probably more important to get the internal look & feel right as that's the part you're looking at when using your new conservatory. You very rarely spend time admiring your conservatory from the garden, although we guarantee a bespoke conservatory design by one of experts will look fabulous inside & out.

90

Your flooring & heating choices go hand in hand, if you're thinking about underfloor heating this works best with a tiled floor as they hold the heat better than a carpet or laminate. Other heating options include free standing or integrated heaters. Remember any extension to your central heating system will trigger building regulation requirements.

Making your conservatory a useable space year round. One of the most common complaints about old conservatories

Keeping the room warm:  Much of the heat loss from a conservatory comes from the roof ridge by adding a ridge surfboard it can help to reduce heat loss – ask your sales advisor about the Livin Light which also allows a new range of lighting designs for your extension.  Underfloor heating can provide cost efficient heating and can be climate controlled with touch screen heating thermostats.  At Trent Valley we use glass from the Pilkington Activ™ range, the range includes reflective and insulating glass. Which type of glass we use will be dependent on the aspect of your conservatory in relation to the sun.

Keeping the room cool:  Heat reflective glass. There is a brand new self cleaning glass available from Pilkington for your roof called Activ Sunshade™which reflects 80% of the suns' heat, keeping your room cool on hot sunny days. The double glazed unit outer pane reflects the solar heat and the inner KS pane insulates the room to stop heat escaping.  Ventilation. The type of ventilation needed is specific to each conservatory, based on many considerations such as size, shape and aspect. The Ultraframe roof system we use at Trent Valley offers eavesflow ventilation and trickle ventilation in the ridge.  A tiled floor can also help to keep your room nice and cool on a hot summer's day.

HOME & GARDEN

Added extra's that give your new conservatory the wow factor Add the Living Room pelmet, an insulated pelmet which transforms the inside of your conservatory into an orangery style extension. This real room feel means more styling and furnishing options and the perimeter ceiling is perfect for down lights. Carefully chosen colours can transform the look of your new conservatory, we offer a wide range of standard & bespoke colours, ask your sales advisor for details. Make the floor a feature with some stunning porcelain tiles. Now available in ceramic, mosaic, stone and wood effects many have matching outdoor tiles to run the floor seamlessly from a conservatory onto a patio. Corniche guttering will hide the external guttering giving the conservatory a better cosmetic finish. Create a beautiful panoramic effect with full width bi-folding patio doors to open up your new conservatory into the garden.

Matthews & Tannert Ltd //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

For all your Plumbing, Heating & Electrical Services

Founded as a plumbing and heating contractor, Matthews and Tannert have evolved into a multi – faceted company, extending to and including all trades associated with the delivery of modernisation and capital investment programmes. Through direct employment and training of local, multi – disciplinary labour we are able to direct deliver full programmes of bathroom, kitchen & heating modernisations, in-house, maintaining flexibility and providing value for money for our more discerning clients.

compliments our fundamental business, but has developed its own standing within the company, having secured several contracts for the electrical installation to new build sites in addition to the installation of lighting to communal area within flats of the Newark & Sherwood District. Our dedicated team of disabled adaptation specialists are able to offer the skill, knowledge & understanding of needs to deliver bathroom & kitchen adaptations internally within the home in addition to external aids, ramps, grab rails, etc.

The fundamental core of our business is based on the expertise, knowledge and employment of local labour we can offer in the social housing market, and the partnerships this allows us to build with local authorities and housing associations through the successful delivery of their refurbishment & modernisation programmes.

Whilst not exhaustive, listed below is a brief description of the works undertaken by Matthews and Tannert Ltd  Installation of plumbing, heating & electrical services to tenanted and new build properties

Evidence of this ability to build relationships based on the successful delivery of programmes to the highest expected quality and budgetary constraints can be demonstrated through our bathroom replacement programmes with Chesterfield Borough Council.

 Full 'in-house' replacement of bathrooms & kitchens incl. disabled adaptations

Initially awarded a 1 year, £1 Million contract in 2010 to deliver their bathroom modernisation programme, we have been able to secure extensions to the contract, and are now into our 3rd year, and are confident that the relationship will continue into the coming years. To date we have carried out complete replacement of 1,650 bathrooms across the borough, including, new sanitary-ware, electrical upgrades, plastering, tiling & decorations. In addition, we have also carried out numerous installations of level access showers & bathroom adaptations.

 Installation of renewable energies – air source, ground source & solar systems

Whilst the company's core is built around modernisation programmes, it does not limit itself to this sector. We have, and continue to serve the new build market, with the installation of heating systems and plumbing services. MCS accreditation and relationships with manufacturers affords us the rare opportunity to offer extended warranties for the installation of renewable energies, such as air source and ground source heating systems. Our recent registration to the NICEIC not only

 Annual gas safety check & landlords certificate

 Installation of Solid Fuel Heating systems  Refurbishment of void properties to re-let standards  Periodic electrical testing

 Electrical upgrades & rewires

Sales at Castle Point, one of Nottingham's landmark buildings have been brisk with almost all of phase one having sold and phase two has just two remaining from five. Phase one comprises 15 beautifully converted luxurious apartments in Castle Point, a landmark building that has served as a textile mill and more recently as a bank. Phase two which is on Peveril Drive just by the gates to The Park Estate is converted from its former use as insurance and accountants offices into two 2 bed apartments, two 3 bed duplex apartments and a 2 bed coach house.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

These first two of the three phases benefit from the spectacular location beneath The Castle at the junction of Castle Boulevard and Peveril Drive. The prestigious position is matched by the longstanding reputation and connection with the City of the developer Pickering Developments who built and ran the Savoy and Royal Hotels in Nottingham.

110

All of the properties within the development have been painstakingly designed to be as light as possible and benefit from the views so large glass expanses have been used wherever possible creating space and a modern feel. Both these first two phases benefit from designated parking spaces for each apartment as well as the option for residents to acquire permit parking in The Park. The ground floor 2 beds on Peveril Drive will also benefit from a landscaped and private outdoor space.

Apartments are contemporary in style and content. High speed internet access is readily available and HDMI cabling has been installed in the lounge and both bedrooms to provide multi-media and offer a choice between Virgin and Sky for its delivery. The new double glazing and acoustic separation of each apartment provides a home superbly insulated against noise and heat loss to the latest building standards. The additional benefit of gas fired under floor heating provides a clean, efficient and cost effective warmth! Kitchens are well equipped with Neff ceramic hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher and fridge freezer. There is also an Indesit washer/tumbler. Specification of each apartment is identical and the floor areas are similar at around 1,000 square feet although room shapes vary giving a personal feel. Each apartment also benefits from a lockable store of 100 square feet in the basement – the perfect storage solution for busy professionals who enjoy a range of sporting hobbies. Generous bespoke floor to ceiling soft glide wardrobes and fitted carpets have been installed in all bedrooms maximising storage without compromising space. Oak laminate floors grace the kitchen and lounge-dining room and the bathrooms are fully tiled and furnished with the latest in contemporary style sanitary ware. The car park area is to be landscaped to increase privacy with a designated parking space for each apartment. Additionally there will be a provision for visitor parking spaces. The superb location provides easy walking access to the designer shops, exclusive restaurants and bars of the Lacemarket and Castle Rock area's as well as the riverside retail and adjacent corporate offices of the canal side redevelopment. Apartments are being marketed by Sasha David Estates llp at 1 Hope Drive, The Park NG7 1DL 50 metres behind the development www.sashadavidestates.com or 01159 583 679.
