The Sands hotel was the very height of Las Vegas sophistication. It was there in 1960, during the filming of "Ocean's Eleven", when for the first time Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr, Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford performed together on stage. From then on, they were forever known as the Rat Pack. Las Vegas was their playground and everywhere else was known, in Rat Pack vocabulary, as 'Dullsville, Ohio'. Frank, Sammy & Dean were a force to be reckoned
with, an inexhaustible energy that is as apparent in their music today as it ever was. This spectacular production celebrates the incredible singing talent of three world-famous entertainers and performers and some of the finest music and song that has ever been recorded. If you wish you'd swung with the hardest partying pack in town, now's your chance!
THE SOUND OF MUSIC 28 NOV - 17 JAN CURVE THEATRE LEICESTER This Christmas, Leicester will come alive with The Sound of Music as Paul Kerryson directs a brand new production of the much-loved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Originally a hit Broadway and West End musical, then followed by the beloved 1965 movie version, The Sound of Music remains one of the most popular musicals of all time. Set against the idyllic landscape of the Austrian Alps, this heart-warming tale based on a true story follows spirited young nun Maria and her relationship with the Von Trapp family. With a timeless score including Do-ReMi, My Favorite Things and Climb Ev’ry Mountain, this global phenomenon continues to enchant audiences across the world. Following last year’s five star Christmas production of Chicago, Paul Kerryson will reunite the exceptionally talented creative team, with Choreographer Drew McOnie and Musical Director Ben Atkinson returning to bring you this magical, musical treat for the whole family.
We look forward to welcoming back Laura Pitt-Pulford who will play the role of Maria and Michael French who takes the role of Captain Von Trapp. We also have Lucy Schaufer who will be returning to Curve to play the role of Mother Abbess
THE WHO 5 DECEMBER CAPITAL FM ARENA The Who hits 50 UK tour will see the band take their audience on an 'Amazing Journey' through their entire career from the days of The High Numbers to classic albums such as Who's Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia, My Generation and Live At Leeds, up to the present day. The Who hits 50 will not only celebrate the fantastic contribution The Who have made to our musical heritage but also their remarkable contribution to youth culture old and new.
The Who have sold over 100 million records since forming in 1964, they brought together four different personalities and in effect produced a musical hurricane. As they enter their 50th year, the band is still going strong winning rave reviews for their performances of Quadrophenia in 2013

Collabro progressed to the final of Britain's Got Talent and were cast the winners in front of 11 million viewers.
POSH - by Laura Wade 3 FEB - 28 FEB NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE An elite Oxford dining society has hired a gastro pub for their termly dinner with the sole aim of getting totally ‘chateaued’. As the evening progresses and the booze flows, tempers fray and things get disastrously out of hand. Darkly comic and disgracefully entertaining, Posh isn’t just one big party though: the boys are planning a revolution. Based on the real-life Bullingdon Club, which counts the Prime Minister, Chancellor and Mayor of London amongst its former members, Laura Wade’s critically acclaimed play is a razorsharp portrayal of what Boris Johnson himself described as superhuman arrogance, toffishness and twittishness. As we look ahead to the next General Election, we explore what our leaders were really up to before we handed them the keys to power.

After the golf, guests enjoyed a delicious three-course meal back at the Clubhouse. Entertainment was provided by comedian and entertainer Kev Orkin, as well as musical legend Merrill Osmond and Boyzone singer Keith Duffy who sung a duet of 'Love Me For A Reason' much to the delight of the audience! Organised by brand agency Champions (UK) plc, the event also presented a fantastic opportunity to raise significant funds for Midlands-based Children's Hospice, Rainbows, through a number of activities including a charity auction conducted by TV auctioneer, Charlie Ross. Prizes included a round of golf with Tony Jacklin CBE at Lytham St Annes and a one week stay at Royal Westmoreland Golf Resort in Barbados. Following the success of one of the UK's most recognisable female TV presenters and journalists in an international poker tournament, Nottingham's leading entertainment venue is launching a new poker room that will open up the game to those wanting to learn more about how to play. Victoria Coren Mitchell, who presents BBC 4's Only Connect quiz show and makes regular appearances on Have I Got News For You, scooped nearly £400,000 in a tournament held in Italy earlier in the year and has prompted a whole new raft of players to take up the game.

Mark Hands, venue director at Alea is looking forward to welcoming new players to the venue who will see why the venue is regarded as being one of the city's best night spots for entertainment, live music and dining out. Mark said: “We've already seen an increase in the number of people asking about learning to play poker following the win by Victoria Coren Mitchell earlier in the year. “Her victory has massively broken down the barriers and perception of what poker is all about which was wrongly associated with seedy clubs and crooks! “This couldn't be further from the truth and we couldn’t wait to get the new room open so that more people could enjoy this great game in a safe and friendly atmosphere.”
The new room is now running games and lessons for newcomers as well as tournaments for those with a little more experience. Mark added: “For most, playing poker is all about fun and you don't have to be a full-time professional or maths wizard to be in with a chance of winning. “The game is all about skill, patience and making decisions. It is also a very wideranging game, for men, women, young and old and anyone who wants to give it a go will be very welcome here. “We've already seen the evidence of poker becoming more popular following this big win by one of the country's best known female TV presenters and can see it enjoying a bit of an increase in popularity over the coming years.”

Horrible Bosses 2
The Interview
Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick, Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business in “Horrible Bosses 2.” But a slick investor (Christoph Waltz) soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son (Chris Pine) and ransom him to regain control of their company.
In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 The worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, which finds Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of Commander Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage.
Into the Woods
Ignatius Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) is a guy who always tried to do the right thing, only to see his whole life abruptly torn away from him. His girlfriend, the person he loves more than anyone in the world, is killed; and although he’s never charged with the murder, everyone, including his family and friends, believe Ig is responsible. Then one drunken night, Ig begins to rage and curse God, blame him for this Hell on Earth. When he wakes, he discovers what appears to be a pair of horns, slowly erupting through his head, and that people have a sudden compulsion to confess their darkest secrets and ugliest impulses to him. It isn’t long before Ig turns his terrible new powers to finding the man who killed his beloved, and taking his revenge.
Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy) - all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family, and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

DVDs The Purge: Anarchy One night every year, the government orders a 12 hour “Purge” where all crime is legal and no emergency services are given. The repressed, the vengeful and the downright insane literally paint the town red with every evil act they can conjure, whilst the rest of society desperately lock themselves inside, in shelters; away from the carnage. The rich turn on their expensive security systems for protection, but the poor can only lock their doors and hope to survive the night. But when one young couple’s car breaks down on their way home – their only hope for safety – they are forced to spend the night of the Purge fighting for their lives on the streets. They have no weapons, no protection, and no transportation. Will they be able to evade the ones who take full advantage of the yearly Purge? Or were their fates already decided when their car stopped? When everything is legal and no consequences are to be had, chaos and brutality will reign.

But when Sherman takes the WABAC out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidentally rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history.
How can a split-second decision change your life? While investigating noises in his house one balmy Texas night in 1989, Richard Dane puts a bullet in the brain of a low-life burglar, Freddy Russell. Although he’s hailed as a small-town hero, Dane soon finds himself fearing for his family’s safety when Freddy’s ex-con father, Ben, rolls into town; hell-bent on revenge. However, not all is as it seems. Shortly after Dane kills the home intruder, his life begins to unravel into a dark underworld corruption and violence. Michael C. Hall brings a shellshocked vulnerability to his portrayal of Dane that contrasts perfectly with the grizzled “badasses” portrayed by Sam Shepard and Don Johnson. Directed with an excellent eye for the visual poetry of noir, this pulpy, southern-fried mystery is a throwback to an older breed of action films; one where every punch and shotgun blast opens up both physical and spiritual wounds. Cold in July is hard to shake as an east Texas summer.

Then on one spectacularly ordinary day at a Cancer Support group, she meets Augustus Waters, the exuberant, witty, spark of life that Hazel hadn’t realised she was waiting for. An incredibly moving tale that is guaranteed to incite many laughs and even more tears, The Fault In Our Stars is based upon the numberone bestselling novel by John Green and explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love.
22 Jump Street After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Prince - Art Official Age
Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways
Jessie Ware - Tough Love
Art Official Age is being billed as “classic Prince,” since it was solely produced, arranged, composed and performed by the legendary musician.
The God’s of Modern Rock return with their eighth studio LP, recorded in eight different cities with a different ‘local legend’ featured on each song.
The follow-up to her 2012 debut album “Devotion”, Tough Love is expected to surpass expectations.
The album is said to be a mix of soul, R&B and funk, with a wild, rude, nasty twist; would we expect anything different from Prince?
Sonic Highways was conceived as “a love letter to the history of American music”, with sessions at iconic studios in Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle and Washington, DC.
Rumours also suggest that we may be treated to an “aggressive and menacing” rap song featuring Rita Ora. Prince featuring Rita Ora? The most unexpected yet oddly intriguing collaboration we can think of!
When an artist’s sound is already so mature with haunting classics such as “Wildest Moments” and “110%” in just her first album, the follow up is certainly something to look forward to, especially after a couple of years to develop and hone in her style. The mesmeric, sultry vocalist describes the making of “Tough Love” as “me experimenting with my voice and having fun with it.”
Books Save the Date - Jen Doll Weddings. They’re fun, festive, and joyful, and at a time when people marry later in life—and sometimes not at all—they offer endless opportunities to re-examine love and what we want for ourselves, regardless of whether or not our aim is a walk down the aisle.
LAPD Detective Harry Bosch seeks justice for the forgotten in this original short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly. An anonymous tip puts Bosch on a case that has remained unsolved for decades, the vicious stabbing of a teenage boy whose body was found in an abandoned Old Hollywood restaurant. Cold cases are often the toughest: With no body, no murder scene, and no fingerprints, Bosch nevertheless gets lucky when DNA evidence from the murder weapon points to a known killer. But the DA insists that science alone is not enough - he needs the case to be bulletproof before he’ll take it to court. Determined to speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves, Bosch has one chance to wrench a confession out of a cold-blooded killer, or risk letting him walk free for good.

The whole point behind a subwoofer is to provide deep and sustained bass. The Sonos SUB doesn’t disappoint. Using twin, force cancelling drivers with separate Class D amplifiers, the Sonos SUB provides a bass that is not only deep enough to rattle the china, but also punchy, agile and dynamic. In short, the bass sounds exactly as it should - fast and deep - not slow and woolly. A further benefit of the speaker configuration is zero cabinet buzz or rattle, giving a refreshing lack of distortion to even your bassiest of tracks.

CELEBRITY PROFILE
Marky Mark
Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg has really proven that a leopard actually can change his spots.
With Ted co star Mila Kunis
The Hollywood Star is very active in multiple charities and actually founded his own in 2001, The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation is a charity which sets out to improve the quality of life for inner city youth and provides financial and community support to assist in making the dreams and ultimate potential of inner city youth become a reality. The foundation has been going strong for over ten years and has helped countless kids growing up in similar cities and conditions as Mark did. But Mark didn’t begin as the charitable good guy, it was actually what transpired in his youth that inspired his charitable work. Wahlberg started his life in Boston, Massachusetts; the youngest of nine children living in a small 3 bedroom apartment. Mark, following the example of his older siblings, dropped out of High School at the young age of 14 and soon went on to join one of Boston’s gangs. During this time he had multiple run in’s with the law and even got pulled into the toxic world of drugs. Wahlberg eventually found himself in front of a judge, being sentenced to two years in a correctional facility for criminal contempt; of which he only served 45 days. He was where he had always
known he’d end up, but a part of him felt deeply wrong. His time in prison forced him to look at his life, leading to him deciding he couldn’t let himself continue like this. In an interview years later, he spoke of his realisation. “As soon as I began that life of crime, there was always a voice in my head telling me I was going to end up in jail. Three of my brothers had done time, my sister went to prison so many times I lost count. Finally I was there, locked up with the guys I’d always wanted to be like. Now I’d earned my stripes and I was just like them and I realised it wasn’t what I wanted at all. I’d ended up in the worst place I could possibly imagine and I never wanted to go back.” Upon his release, Mark turned away from the life of crime and towards his religion. Wahlberg sought guidance and support from his Parish Priest and is now a committed and devout Roman Catholic. After turning his back on the dark world of drugs and gangs, Mark had been working as a bricklayer when he got his big break. Mark’s big brother Donnie, who had risen to fame with the band New Kids on the Block while Mark was serving time, began to help Mark form his own band, Marky Mark and
Ted
The Fighter The Fighter the Funky Bunch. His brother helped him get a record contract and produce the first record the group made. The debut album Music for the People, which was released in 1991 when Mark Wahlberg was 19 years old, ended up going Platinum thanks to the hit single Good Vibrations and the follow up single Wildside. For a short period, Marky Mark posters were on the walls of all swooning teenage girls, he did a short stint of modelling, most famously the Calvin Klein underwear ad and Vanity Fair shoot. But sadly the fame from the band’s big hit lasted, as do most one hit wonders, briefly. But unlike many artists in this situation, Mark didn’t simply fade from the public eye. Leaving behind the Marky Mark name, Wahlberg set out to become an actor and though at first this was addressed with skepticism, he comfortably made his way into Hollywood. Wahlberg had a few lead roles in films during the 90’s, but many consider Boogie Nights to be his biggest early role and one of his best. Made in 1997, the film tells the story of a young nightclub dishwasher who finds himself in the Adult Film industry. Critics were “pleasantly surprised” by Wahlberg’s performance and it was perhaps here that people started to see him as an actor and not a has-been rapper.
Over the years Wahlberg has revealed that he had his heart very badly broken at a
The drastic change from drugs and gangs to Oscars and children is one that has kept Wahlberg eternally grateful for his good fortune, he soon took the next step to his perfect his life and married the mother of his children, Rhea, in 2009. Mark had once said that he would retire from acting at the age of 40, but after the great success of the 2010 film The Fighter, in which Wahlberg played the lead, he showed no signs of stopping. He later retracted the promise of retirement and joked that perhaps he would retire at 50, but with the films coming thick and fast for Mark, we’re sure that on his 50th birthday he’ll promise to retire at 60.
With Wife, Rhea Durham Youth Foundation
Since turning 40, Wahlberg has had a succession of lead roles in popular films including Pain and Gain, 2 Guns and Seth Macfarlane’s raunchy comedy Ted, which has been rated one of the most popular R-Rated comedies of all time, in which Wahlberg plays John Bennett alongside the perverted, foul mouthed teddy bear, Ted, voiced by Macfarlane. Wahlberg turns 43 this June and now lives happily with Rhea and their four children; with more films on the horizon such as Transformers: Age of Extinction and the eagerly awaited Ted 2, it’s fair to say we will be seeing much more from this reformed rebel turned Hollywood Superstar.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Throughout the 90’s Wahlberg landed roles in films such as Three Kings, The Perfect Storm and The Basketball Diaries, but it was 2001 that would see to be one of the most important years in Mark’s life. It was using the money he had earned playing the lead in the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes, that he established The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation. Mark had a great desire to prevent kids from going down the road that he had gone down and finally had the power and resources to do something about it. He would often say, “There isn’t anything that isn’t possible. If I can do it, so can you. But it comes from hard work, dedication and doing the right thing.” In the same year, Mark met the woman who would change his life.
young age and never believed he could ever get over it, that was until he met model Rhea Durham; the couple fell in love and in 2003 they had their first child, Ella Rae. Mark has explained that even with the changes he underwent early in his life, he had never felt such a change in his view of the world like the one he felt when his baby girl was born. With his life going from one high to the next, it was a few years later that he got a supporting role in the Critically Acclaimed Martin Scorsese film The Departed, for which he was later nominated an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Wahlberg has since said that it was undoubtedly his proudest role to date.

Haveli - Restaurant Review Indian Restaurant in Chilwell With the great abundance of restaurants around us and countless cuisines to sample, finding the right place for the perfect meal can be quite a difficult endeavour. Well you needn't worry, this one's on us.
very happy to say I was not wrong; the dish was delicious, each bite offered different flavours than the last and the aroma was wonderfully intoxicating.
Haveli, in Chilwell, is an Indian restaurant that really stands proudly above many. Boasting not only an expertly made menu, but beautiful presentation, a warm and inviting atmosphere and an attentive, welcoming staff which really cannot be spoken of highly enough.
After finishing our starters, a complimentary palette cleanser was served in the form of a delightful mango sorbet; really the perfect thing to prepare for the main course.
From the moment we pulled up to this contemporary restaurant, we knew it was going to be an Indian culinary experience with a difference. We were greeted at the door and regarded as though we were old friends, not a surly face in sight; which I think we can all agree can be seen too often in some establishments. Once seated we were treated to complimentary poppadoms and chutneys, which alone were wonderful, whilst we browsed the menu. The scent of food on neighbouring tables piqued our interest and it is easy to see that every course leaving the kitchen is carefully made with skill and a genuine creative flair. The menu offers traditional favourites, a wide range of vegetarian options and also many unique dishes which I had honestly never seen before in any restaurant. And if requested, dishes can be adjusted to taste and spice requirements; which is perfect for those who adore flavour but not so much heat!

I think one of my favourite things about this restaurant's cooking style would be the attention to flavour. Unlike many Indian restaurants, the meals emphasise flavour with a range of imaginative ingredients, rather than simply oils and butters, which meant we were saved the common heavy feeling often endured after an indulgent Indian meal. The restaurant really does give you the feeling of authentic Indian home cooking, each chef carries years of experience and it truly shows in the quality of the food. Haveli is esteemed for its great service, making guests feel remarkably special and of course the fantastic food; I'm pleased to tell you that the restaurant certainly lives up to its expectations. Iconic Nottinghamshire Venue The Walton Hotel....Reborn City Life Magazine catch up with the new owner of the Walton Hotel, Alice Tarry, to see what we can expect as she breathes life back into this prestigious Nottinghamshire venue. How have you been settling into this new role? It’s an exciting time! The Walton used to be such an iconic venue within Nottinghamshire. Many people will remember when it was in it’s heyday, whether as a popular meeting place for after work drinks or as the place most likely to bump into one of Nottingham’s famous theatrical visitors. Bringing the place back to life and restoring the building to its former glory is exciting but challenging at the same time. It’s always a thrill when we uncover some more of the original features that have been hidden by previous work that has been carried out here.
City Life Magazine’s Nick Smith talks to Walton Hotel proprietor Alice Tarry.
Situated in the historic Park area of the city of Nottingham, The Walton provides the perfect retreat. Built as a hunting lodge in the early 1800's, this unique residence has retained many of its original features whilst offering all of the conveniences of modern living. This prestigious and secluded location is amazingly just 10 minutes walk from the vibrant centre of Nottingham. Here you'll find a superb range of shops, bars, pubs, restaurants, theatres and the city's historic castle
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Is this your first large business venture of this kind? I have previously carried out a similar project with Shoby Priory in Leicestershire, which was a great learning experience and one which I gained a lot of knowledge that I can bring to this project, not least learning all the do’s and don't’s when restoring listed buildings. You have to source the right products and much of the work requires expert tradesmen who specialise in each particular field. What are your aspirations for The Walton Hotel. I have got lots of plans for the hotel. It’s a restoration project but I’m also keeping it in mind that this is a venue that has a place in the hearts of many people who have fond memories of past times here. I am hoping to make this a venue that those people would once again like to frequent whilst at the same time providing an exciting new venue that will attract new visitors. I want to create a place with a great atmosphere. Everyone that works here are genuinely nice people! We are like a family and we are working together in the hope that we can create a home from home feel, so that visitors can call in and treat it like they would their own home, eventually they will hopefully come to know each individual member of our team on first name terms. This is what we hope will set The Walton apart from the other hotels in the area...that personal touch. Are you happy with the work done so far and what do you envisage the whole project costing? When you are working on a restoration project like this it’s difficult to work to a set budget. You can’t be sure of anything until the work is in progress as you don’t know what you may uncover. We are using grade 2 listed tradesmen to ensure that every aspect is done correctly. It’s also important to us that where possible, those tradesmen are local and therefore on hand. The exterior wall for instance dates back to 1054 and has in previous years been clad and painted. Restoring this is a specialist job and we are working closely with the planners and specialists in this field. We have started on the bedrooms and are furnishing and decorating them in the style of a 19th century hunting lodge, which is the origins of the building. On completion the hotel will offer 15 individual rooms, each unique, all with brand new facilities and offering an outstanding level of comfort with private bathrooms, direct dial telephones, LCD television, free WIFI and tea and coffee making facilities. Regarding cost of the whole project, we honestly don’t know. On a project like this we won’t know until the work is complete, as you never know what you may find along the way that will add to the cost. It just needs to be done right.
FOOD & DRINK
The Walton Hotel Team
Are there any other key things you have in mind right now, to change or improve on in the future? We are going to work through the entire building. The restaurant is one of the main aspects and we have exciting plans for it. It will be renamed, The Pelham Restaurant in recognition of Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham Clinton, the 4th Duke of Newcastle and a colourful character in the history of Nottingham, who’s idea it was to change the park estate from a deer park into a residential estate.
The idea behind the restaurant is to provide a country feel but with an elegant twist. The menu is important and we are conscious that it needs to include the right food. Where possible we will also be making many elements fresh on site, such as the breads and ice cream etc. We will also be producing and selling our own jams and pickles. Our chef will regularly create fresh new menus that reflect the best seasonal and local produce available. The restaurant will be a centrepiece to the hotel and we are hoping that with the work we are doing, it will when complete, offer both a visual as well as a taste experience. Many people have asked us about the famous Monkey room and we would like to assure them that we will be preserving it’s famous artwork which it has been named after. We are furnishing this room with glamorous antiques, most of which, as a novelty twist, will also be available to purchase. Outside, we have the veranda, which will become a Winter garden during the colder months with heaters and a fire pit. With Christmas fast approaching, are you planning anything big for this years festivities? We have a busy schedule covering the festive period. Fleeces at Forty? Looking around yet another store full of uninspiring, synthetic looking clothes, I see my mum’s face fall.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
At 52, my mum is a beautiful woman who is still youthful and vibrant and has always loved fashion, a love she has passed down to her daughter. Obviously, if she had a magic wand or three wishes from the genie, she would wish to be a size 10. She is an average sized woman with a few cuddly areas just like most people. Diplomatically put, she isn’t a stick. In her words she is ‘built more for comfort than for speed’. So being a woman with a curvy frame, she struggles, like so many other men and women out there, to dress for her body shape.
68
There are so many different physiques out there; Trinny and Susannah cooked up some rather whimsical new shapes for us to digest several years ago... The ‘column’ shape for instance. And the ‘spoon’. No wonder men and women are confused! Whatever happened to the simple ‘boyish’ or ‘hourglass’ figures? Now we’ve got to factor in different types of fruit to describe ourselves; ‘pear’ shaped and ‘apple’ shaped. And what in God’s name is an ‘inverted triangle’? In trying to help people wade through the changes that occur during middle age (yes I used the forbidden word) everyone has actually become more
baffled than ever. There are websites out there now to help guide us through what specific shapes we are and how to dress accordingly which hopefully are of help to some people. However, I think rather than over complicating things, just take a look at yourself in your own mirror and pick out your best and worst features. Then you can look for items that cover up the less than desirable bits and draw attention to the attractive bits. Seemingly when you hit 40, the fashion fairy taps you on the shoulder and says, “You shouldn’t really be thinking about all this now should you? You should concentrate on being a parent and can wear comfy, undesirable clothing from now on”. It’s true, men and women of a certain age, especially those with children, shouldn’t be competing with their children. I have seen women walking around out there who still insist on wearing leopard print jeans and cowboy boots- a midlife crisis I believe. So where is the middle ground? Where is the acceptable point between the mutton and the lamb? Are women over 40 destined for a life of waterfall cardigans and gypsy tops and
men resigned to wearing fleeces and the cotton zipper jacket? Or are you to experiment by revisiting an earlier time of mini skirts and bondage trousers? ‘No’, is the answer to all of the above. When you do actually make the voyage into town and begin your mission of tracking down a new outfit, the choices men and women are met with when you are past a certain age is overwhelmingly brutal at times. Where I work, we set a great deal of store by the fit, fabric and quality of our products. The fashionable fit at the moment seems to be ‘body con’. We see girls strutting around town in short, clingy dresses which, if you possess the correct figure, can look fantastic. However this unforgiving style of dress and skirt will without a doubt cling to every available lump and bump you own. It is one thing trying to pull off this look when you have the advantage of youth on your side, but when you are a more mature woman and want to look sexy yet sophisticated, it isn’t usually the way forward. No one wants to showcase their wobbly bits, no one is to ever be ashamed of their body but there are ways to dress that don’t include squeezing yourself into a sausage skin.
Linking on delightfully from the body con style is the fabric of the moment: JERSEY. This fabric can be used for the greater good- Diane Von Furstenberg’s jersey wrap dress is synonymous with style and elegance. But without the eye watering budget to purchase these designer pieces, we are left with the cheaper imitations from the high street that cling and pull in all the wrong places and inevitably end up looking just that: cheap. This leads me nicely onto quality.
Men have a much more challenging time trying to find inexpensive clothing that still looks good. We ladies can get away with
wearing a cheaper pair of jeans as long as they fit well and we team them with a good leather handbag and timeless jewellery. For men there is a fine line between looking casual and looking like a sack of spuds. If I had my way, men would walk around in well cut suits and brogues all day- men always look a treat in a suit, no matter what age or size. Of course this is not a practical solution to man’s clothing issues. I am a big believer that men, especially as they’re getting older, should look fairly smart even on their off duty days. There are some great options out there for men without having to resort to Primark or having to break the bank in Paul Smith. All you need, fellas, is a great pair of fitted jeans (no drainpipes please, you’re not Russell Brand) a casual shirt and a pair of well worn boots or suede loafers and you’re good to go. When you hit a certain age, it’s time to put away the football shirts (apart from at a match, that is acceptable) and time to say goodbye to the baggy-at-the-crotch chinos. But never fear, it doesn’t mean it’s time for woolly tank tops and slacks. Just like there are for women, there are options for men out there that are affordable and sexy. I think the key to buying clothes is to buy classic pieces that will last and won’t date. Throwaway fashion is a such a huge part of the industry now that we get used to shopping for a quick bargain and forget to think about the future of our wardrobe. Rather than spending a rolling fortune on cheap but easy clothes that you won’t wear more than twice, spend your money wisely on well fitting, essential pieces that are versatile but still exciting. And who says that you can’t wear black? I know our wardrobes can become dismal and dark very easily but not if you buy great structured pieces
Cameron Diaz
Ryan Gosling that can easily be accentuated with a pop of colour. Black is an easy colour to wear for most people and it’s not a bad thing. It’s sleek, stylish and classic and ultimately very flattering. If however you fancy a bit more colour, there are some great websites that will help you match your hair and eye colour to the colours that are suitable. Most sales assistants will also be very helpful when it comes to choosing the right colour for you. Don’t be afraid of the attention that colour draws- embrace it! Sticking to bold block colours is the best bet, florals can sometimes look a little granny apples on an older woman but once again if you can pull it off and you like the way the pattern flatters you then more flower power to you! There’s no need to be afraid of getting older when it comes to fashion. This is easy to say as a twenty-one year old, I know, but having worked in the fashion industry for a while now and having always been a keen observer of what my parents and friends choose to wear, I have been given a clear insight into the ever changing world of style. We all get it wrong sometimes and this is down to several factors such as what is currently in fashion, what we think we should be wearing and what the lighting’s like in our bedrooms. There are no written rules to fashion but we all have a basic idea of what to and what not to wear. There’s one thing I know for sure; I certainly won’t be wearing a fleece at 40. By Joanna Hoyes.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Trying to find good quality clothing without the astronomical price tag is extremely tricky. There is a huge gap in the market for the store that sells clothes somewhere between designer and high street. The one place that have certainly upped their game this season is Marks and Spencer. For years they have had a stigma attached to them, showcasing only little cardigans and long gypsy skirts with a belt attached similar to the ones Deirdre Barlow likes to sport. However their A/W 14 collection has been inspired by the 60’s style that graced the catwalks at the start of the season. They have designed some beautiful tea dresses of appropriate lengths made of affordable but classic fabrics, stylish tailored coats and colourful fitted blazers. Zara has also come on leaps and bounds for all ages and both genders with their pared down minimalist style. They sell flattering tailored garments at a very reasonable price and have branched out into statement jewellery which contrary to popular opinion, women in their 50’s can still wear!

What's keeping you awake at night? Fed up of counting sheep? Local Nottingham entrepreneur Kathryn Pinkham is helping people across Nottingham to sleep more soundly after opening the Midlands first Insomnia Clinic. Kathryn says that the secret to a good night's sleep is all in the way you think about sleep. Sound simple? Well it can be, and Kathryn can show you how. “1 in 10 adults in the UK will experience insomnia at some point in their lives,” said Kathryn. “A lot of people might use sleeping pills, alcohol or other quick fixes to help, but unfortunately these are only short term solutions.
Kathryn said she set up her own insomnia therapy business after finding her passion for sleep therapy whilst working as a Psychological Practitioner for the NHS. “A good night's sleep is essential for good health and enjoying life. I recognised a gap in the market for sleep therapy in particular,” said Kathryn.
“I offer my clients personal face to face appointments with a tailored program at a reasonable cost, or I can offer a telephone or email service for those too busy to come and see me.This has worked really well for my long distance clients, I've treated people as far away as Australia, with great results.” Kathryn is a registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and also a member of the UK Health Centre Register. She uses CBT therapy as is recommended by the NHS as the most effective, non- medical treatment for long term insomnia. If you're tired of counting sheep then contact Kathryn at Kathryn.pinkham@sleep-therapy.co.uk or on 07970 539 107 for a free telephone consultation.

“I work with patients to identify the habits and thoughts that are preventing them from sleeping, and then tailor a sleep therapy solution just for them. Through identifying the thoughts and behaviours that are maintaining poor sleep we can create new habits that promote sound sleep. Unlike sleeping pills, this approach can give you the tools you need for life.”
“It was often offered as only part of perhaps a bigger psychological problem, and usually meant patients were waiting along time to receive the treatment “

A new generation of fabulous natural stone look alikes has captured the exclusive appearance of Carrara marble.
The classic simplicity of this elegant, bevelled edge tile has a universal appeal.
HOT FROM BOLOGNA SOME SIZZLING NEW TILE TREATS The International Ceramic Tile Fair in Bologna is the annual showcase for everything new in the world of tiles, brimming with tile ideas, as sizzling and appetizing as a freshly baked pizza.
The traditional hexagonal tile makes a welcome return in an updated guise.
“This beautiful wall tile, which combines a classic simplicity with a bold and exciting geometric design, will appeal to modernists and traditionalists alike. “It combines qualities, which will appeal to a very wide range of tile buyers. Its main attraction lies in its simplicity, which at first appears minimalist but with plenty of fine lines to excite the eye.” There's a new angle too on a traditional design, which is enjoying a revival in its popularity – the hexagon shaped tile. Ceramic tile look-alikes are the hot news in the industry – but this year, manufacturers have taken their techniques to new heights – to produce some of the most stunning and luxurious finishes ever.
It looks just as sumptuous as the real thing – but at a fraction of the price – making “marble” floors and walls available to every buyer.
Wood look-alikes are exceptionally popular with designers – for their attractive good looks and tough, hard wearing qualities.

This newly introduced product creates fantastic opportunities for a super-luxury look and feel to floors in all areas of the home. And it is also ideal for giving commercial designs an impressive “Wow” factor.
EMC Tiles managing director, Barry Slawson, said: “We have always been among the first to bring back inspirations from Bologna, to make sure our customers have all the latest choices. “Bologna is the Aladdin's Cave for the tile industry – with a wealth of tile treasures to pick from.
The fantastic effect of the new highly polished wood look gives a high lustre, super luxury feel.

“This year's offerings are as exciting as ever. “As well as the new look-alikes, there have also been some other significant developments in design.

The occasion proved to be extremely popular with in excess of 300 visitors turning up to celebrate the launch with the NK Motors' team. At the official opening ceremony guests were welcomed with a champagne breakfast hosted by the award-winning Haveli Indian Restaurant. Celebrities were in attendance while Managing Director Sanj Kumar made his opening speech at noon, with the ribbon in front of the showroom doors being cut by Kia representative Chris Hallam. A local jazz band provided the soundtrack to the occasion while younger visitors met their favourite Disney characters and a 10 foot tall clown! Light refreshments were served to all on Saturday afternoon while on Sunday morning, the Haveli Restaurant team were back again to bring guests their champagne breakfasts. NK Motors Managing Director, Sanj Kumar says: “Our official opening event at Chilwell proved to be hugely successful. We received a record-breaking number of orders for new Kia cars over the two main days, and sales of used Kia models also proved to be very brisk.” Sanj Kumar's father, Nindi, established NK Motors in 1981. He remains on the board today. This family-owned company has grown massively over the past 33 years to become the UK's largest Kia-franchised dealership, and the newly-opened Chilwell showroom is nearly as large as the Kia display area at NK Motors' headquarters on Pride Park, Derby. Sanj comments: “I'd like to thank our many loyal customers and those new to NK Motors and the Kia brand for attending our launch. Thanks too, to all those who contributed to our event. The All-New Volvo XC90 The all-new Volvo XC90 is a visually striking, premium quality seven seat SUV with world leading safety features, new powertrain technologies, an unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency and a superlative interior finish.
The new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo's history, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilising its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology. The First Edition of the all-new Volvo XC90, 1,927 individually numbered cars only available for sale via digital commerce, sold out in 47 hours after it was released in early September 2014. The XC90's larger bonnet with its new topography, the beltline and the sharpened shoulders connecting with the tattoo-like, new rear lights are other important design signatures that will be mirrored across the range. Volvo already enjoys a reputation for providing the most comfortable seats in the industry. The new XC90 enhances this reputation by offering innovatively designed seats that also free up interior space for passengers both in the second and third seat rows, helping to make the new XC90 a genuine 7-seater.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
The full seat core has an ergonomic shape that resembles the human spine. A multitude of adjustment possibilities makes it possible for the individual user to create an ideal seating position. The new seats are available with adjustable side bolsters, seat cushion extension and massage.
102
The second row features three individual seats with recline adjustment. The sliding function can be used to create more legroom for the passengers in the third row – or to increase loading space. An integrated child booster cushion in the centre seat is optional.
The new XC90 offers a range of two-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. The top of the range XC90 Twin Engine, which combines a supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offers an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation: around 400 horsepower with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of 64 g/km (NEDC driving cycle) Normal driving is conducted in the default hybrid mode. But at the push of a button the driver can switch to quiet and emission-free city driving on pure electric power where the range will be around 40 kilometres, and then, when needed, immediately revert back to the combined capacity of the petrol engine and electric motor. Combined maximum torque is over 600 Nm, making the XC90 accelerate from 0 to 100 in 6.4 seconds. Full range of other engine options The Volvo XC90 range also includes the D5 twin turbo diesel engine with 225 hp, 470 Nm, best in class fuel consumption of around 6l/100 km and the D4 turbo diesel engine with 190 hp, 400 Nm and a fuel consumption of around 5l/100 km. The range also offers two petrol engine options. The first is a T6 engine with supercharger and turbo with 320 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. The second is a T5 with 254 hp and 350 Nm. All engine versions come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
CHASSIS & POWER TRAINS
SENSUS - Most modern control system on the market
When it comes to driving dynamics, the XC90 gives the smooth, solid ride of a premium SUV combined with sharp handling and response. There is a completely new chassis, front and rear.
The new Sensus user interface is without doubt the most modern in-car control system on the market. It completely reinvents the way drivers operate their cars.
Unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency
The traditional selection of buttons and controls has been

replaced with a smooth, intuitive interaction between a large tablet-like touch screen, controls on the steering wheel and a capable voice-control system. The digital instrumentation and the head-up display in front of the driver make sure that the most relevant information is available when needed. Sensus gives comfortable access to a wide selection of cloudbased applications. The outstanding in-car possibilities includes Internet radio, connected navigation, finding and paying for parking, seamless music streaming, the ability to mirror and use Apple and Android devices in the touch screen display, a hot spot for using a tablet in the car – and much more. Also – the XC90 will not only tell the driver when it's time for service, but also suggest an appointment at a Volvo dealership. The all-new Volvo XC90 can be specified with a four-zone climate system with individual settings for the occupants in the front seats and in the second row. A separate air-conditioning unit for the third row is standard or optional depending on the market.
The all-new XC90 offers the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. It includes two world first safety technologies: a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability. In a run-off road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. To help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain. The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car. This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher. Automatic support in queues On the driver support side, the new Adaptive Cruise Control with Pilot Assist enables safe and comfortable semiautonomous driving by automatically following the vehicle ahead in stop-and-go traffic. Acceleration, braking and now also steering are controlled automatically. Making sure that the driver remains in full control also when manoeuvring and reversing in tight spaces, the all-new XC90 features a 360° Surround view. The Park Assist Pilot now also offers automatic reversing into a parking bay.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
One of the top audio systems in the world The XC90 features one of the top audio systems available in the automotive world. The top-of-the-line system in the XC90 features a 1,400 W Class D amplifier and 19 Bowers & Wilkins speakers. It also includes one of the first air-ventilated subwoofers in a car. Integrated into the car body, it turns the whole interior space into a giant subwoofer.

The Jaguar XE Redefining the concept of the sports saloon
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
As one of the most anticipated cars in 2015 and a key driver of future success for the Jaguar, so to say the new Jaguar XE saloon is important really is an understatement.
106
It's also why Jaguar has spent so much time and effort making sure the company delivers a car that is not only great to drive and delivers low running costs, but also has strong appeal for company car drivers. That's no easy challenge given it is going up against the BMW 3-Series saloon and the Audi A4 saloon. Lightweight for low running costs The all-new Jaguar is made from aluminium in an attempt to keep weight down; the less the saloon weighs than the better the fuel consumption. Jaguar reckons with its all-new diesel engine (there will be more new engines joining the XE range in
the future) the XE saloon is capable of emitting just 99g/km of CO2. That means it will currently qualify for zero road tax and company car drivers will be looking at a Benefit in Kind tax band of 14 percent for the 2015/16 tax year. Its Jaguar XE's design is very aerodynamic (it terms of drag coefficient it measures a low 0.26cd) with even the underfloor sculpting providing smooth airflow. Jaguar's designers have even designed the front bumper to provide smooth airflow over the front wheels and brakes. Reduced ownership costs Jaguar has focused heavily on reducing ownership costs too. The new diesel engine is predicted to have service intervals of up to 21,000 miles while engine service items should be easy to get to and replace. The front suspension is set up so that if the front wheels suffer a severe knock it is the 'slip arm' that bends, saving the suspension. The company reckons it is a simple dealer job to
EXPECTED RESULTS Model: 2.0 Diesel 163 Engine: 1,999cc Power: 163bhp @ 4000rpm 0-62mph: 7.9 secs Top Speed: 141mph Price: £27,000 (from)
re-set the slip arm and put the wheels back in correct alignment. This could save on expensive repairs to suspension. Safety kit and driver's aids Also fitted to all Jaguar XEs is a range of safety kit with the aim of securing the full five-star rating from independent crash experts Euro NCAP.
It enables the driver to access a range of functions and apps including ones for parking, traffic and news (though they have to be apps optimised for the XE to work on its screen). You can also use your smart phone to check on the XE's status such as fuel levels and whether the car is locked. You can also remotely lock or unlock. Driving appeal
Not only is the car's structure optimised for crash protection and will be fitted with the usual range of airbags but the car is fitted with a range of safety kit and driver's aids including autonomous braking. This stops the car automatically at speeds of up to 24mph, and will help mitigate a collision of speeds up to 50mph.
Jaguar is keen to emphasis the XE is a driver's car and is setting out to provide the best driving experience in class - not easy given how good the BMW 3 Series is. The Jaguar XE uses electric-powered steering but with variable, speed-sensitive assistance so at parking speeds a little turn of the wheel gets a bigger move of the front wheels, and at higher speeds it's less.
It will provide audible warning sounds and pre-arm the brakes ready to apply maximum braking pressure if the driver intervenes before the system automatically applies the brakes.
There are several electronic systems to aid the driver including Jaguar's Drive Control – also seen on the bigger XF and XJ saloons - which enables the driver to select different driving modes such as comfort and sport. You also get an All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) that maximises traction no matter what the conditions are, including dealing with snow or ice.
In-car tech and wi-fi
The range topping S model will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 supercharged engine that can sprint from 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds.
The Jaguar XE will come with a range of in-car tech including smart phone connectivity. A smart phone can be connected via a USB port and then the car's eight-inch touchscreen effectively works as an extension of the phone's.
Expected to go on sale starting from £27,000 in 2015
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Pedestrians benefit too though; Jaguar has fitted the XE with a pop-up bonnet that raises the bonnet up to create a larger deformable area to help protect anyone hitting it. The innovative aspect is that once deployed the bonnet can be pressed back down as it doesn't use an airbag to lift it.

City Life Touring the Costa Blanca ...Guadalest, ‘The Eagles Nest’
Guadalest, the 'Eagle's Nest', is located about 25 km inland from Benidorm along the CV-70 road, and over one hour from Alicante. It enjoys one of the most spectacular locations of any village in Spain, set high up on a pinnacle and carved out of a mountain top in the midst of truly stunning scenery. It has a population of only 200 but is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain. The drive inland from Altea is fascinating as you follow the winding road ever higher past the picturesque village of Polop, before emerging finally high up over Guadalest. Of Islamic origin, Guadalesta was a military stronghold of great strategic importance and is the site of several ancient castles, the remains of which can still be seen today - although earthquakes and battles during the War of Spanish Succession (early 18th Century) have reduced these castles to little more than shells. One of its most famous landmarks is the Peñon de La Alcalá tower rising high above the village to watch over the valley below. The castle village, which is reached through a tunnel, is a delight, with many little craft and souvenir shops, several cafés and museums.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
You can take a little tour around the inside of the castle and the ramparts. It only costs a few Euros and you will be rewarded with some simply breathtaking views of the surrounding valley and down to the Bay of Altea. There are many works of art on display, from the elaborate to the comical ('Man eating Hotdog').
