David Fowkes Jewellery – The Creation of the Unique Fabulous, artisan cut, gemstones are the focal point of David Fowkes Jewellery. He has sourced a wonderful selection of stunning quality gems ready to become part of a unique collection of jewellery. Projects usually begin by exploring the clients' thoughts and ideas regarding the piece of jewellery they wish to commission – sometimes they just purely fall in love with a gemstone which will then be designed and made into their new object of adornment. True designer jewellery is about working with the client directly to understand their style and to create jewellery for their needs. The starting point for various projects which are undertaken in the workshop goes right to the beginning of this process. David sources gemstones which perfectly match his clients' desires – jewellery
is personal, full of emotion and sentiment and often signifies life events, hence it is so important to listen to the client and to ensure they are involved throughout the process, especially in choosing the centre piece gem. Lifestyle and budget are also contributory factors to each bespoke design. Client involvement is encouraged with input into the final design permitting the character and personality of the wearer to shine through the finished piece. On occasions, a hidden gem might be “rediscovered”, waiting to be given the Fowkes makeover, and transformed or re-invented. This might be an inheritance of a family heirloom where sentiment and provenance are of prime importance. Metals can be melted down and used again, stones can be re-set, or even new ones added, all depending on the clients' needs for the piece of jewellery they have in mind.

Where does the time go? The year is now well under way and seems to be passing by unbelievably quick. It always seems like life is so hectic with no time to sit, relax and take stock of what is really important. When I was younger, the school summer holidays seemed to last forever, now the summer months are no more than a couple of mortgage payments long. I'm quite sure the regularity of paying bills is one of the major factors in the ever increasing speed of life. No sooner has one been paid it is nearly due again.

Looking back in time though there are certain things that seem to have been around for ever and yet not as long as you would have thought. The world wide web as we know it has now been available for 26 years, founded in 1991, how did we do anything before then? The national lottery started 23 years ago in 1994 and it has taken me this long to resign myself to the fact that I will never win. Not for the lack of trying, I have bought tickets every week since it began, but no such luck. Only 13 years ago in 2004,Facebook was founded, now that is unbelievable, it seems to have been around for ever. Not so long ago in 2009, Whatapp was founded and is now a mere 8 years old. None of these were around when I was a child, neither was the mobile phone and I'm sure we are only in the very early stages of where future technology will take us. I n a national survey, people were asked what their most important purchase this year would be and the overwhelming choice was a holiday. I believe we should all have a break away, wherever that may be just to step off the conveyor belt of life for a short while. The choices are endless, whether you are looking to travel to the other side of the world or somewhere different in this country. In this issue we feature the Lake District, one of the most beautiful scenic places on earth and yet right on our doorstep. There are a great choice of places to stay to fit every budget and wherever you stay, the fresh air and the scenery is all free.

Sharon Duffield and Drew Hewitt have organised a fundraising charity ball at Colwick Hall in memory of their loved ones.
Arabian Nights’ Charity Ball in memory of a daughter and a father who lost their lives too early. Sharon Duffield and Drew Hewitt both had their loved ones taken too early. They have now worked together to organise an event in their memory. Sharon, of Mapperley Park, lost her daughter Amy, 23, in August 2013, after a virus attacked her heart. In 2005, Drew Hewitt, of Normanton, lost his father Christopher, 53, after he battled with motor neurone disease for five years. The sell-out event on the 1st April 2017 at Colwick Hall is set to be a resounding success after family and friends snapped up more than 450 tickets. Over the last three years, after Amy’s death, almost £120,000 has been raised for Nottingham University Hospitals' adult intensive care fund. All the proceeds from the charity ball will be split between the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Amy’s Fund. With the money they raise, they plan to spend half helping local families who are going through similar experiences and the other half will go towards research into curing and treating the diseases. Sharon said: "With the help of the Nottinghamshire Community Foundation we are now raising money so that disadvantaged children can enjoy the benefit of riding horses, which was one of Amy's main passions in life.”
Amy, 23, died suddenly in August 2013 after a mysterious virus attacked her heart.
Drew, who co-owns the Rum House in Hockley, and was also one of Amy's best friends, said: “My Dad was determined that this was not going to beat him and we believe it prolonged his life. When he turned 50 he thought it was going to be his last birthday so he wanted to go out with a bang and hired a circus big top for his back garden.
The father-of-three from Ruddington, travelled all over the world trying to find a cure for the disease, including testing a new experimental umbilical blood transfusion in Puerto Rico and a stem cell treatment in Ukraine. Unfortunately, when Drew was only 15, his father passed away.
Christopher Hewitt did everything he could to beat motor neurone disease but he sadly lost his life in 2005, aged 53.

In it’s 18th year Disney's The Lion King is as good as ever! Even Disney could not have predicted that all these years later the show would still be London's most popular musical, selling out performances eight times a week and continually playing to packed audiences. Comparing the show to some of the new crop shows in the West End, you would worry that some of the magic may have faded, and the show dated, but the staging and costume design remains some of the most innovative, impressive and breathtaking to ever be seen on stage - musical or otherwise. Disney Theatricals have grown in strength and statue since the production originally opened on Broadway in 1997, but The Lion King remains the jewel in the crown for theatrical integrity and pure spectacle. Based on the 1994 animated film, one of the last in the period of the 'Disney Renaissance', the heart-warming tale follows the lion cub Simba as he learns to take his place in the great "circle of life" following the murder of his father Mufassa by his evil uncle Scar. The show combines low comedy (side-kicks Timon and Pumba) with shades of 'Hamlet', resulting in a near perfect and original story that delights both children and adults. The level of detail in the costumes, make up and puppetry is utterly staggering and creates a visual feast for the eyes aided by authentic and energetic choreography
that makes you forget the cast are humans. This is blended with the subtlety of the direction that at its most powerful shows a waterhole drying up with just the simplest trick and binds together a fully immersive technical feat. There is simply nothing like this musical on a production level and the fact it stands the test of time and is yet to be bettered is proof alone of its success. The show has had some tightening up in recent years to keep the run time to a family friendly level. All of the set pieces are there - from the opening section where the animals come together to celebrate "The Circle of Life" to the Wildebeest stampede and the battle for Pride Rock. The ingenuity however comes from scenes such as "The Lioness Hunt" and "One By One" that bring a fresh authenticity to the score and showcase a universally talented, athletic and agile ensemble. The Lion King is an outstanding creative and emotional musical and will no doubt remain the King of the West End for many years to come. It appeals to adults and children of all ages and the London show not to be missed.
OUR REVIEW TRIP...
On the review trip we were provided accommodation in the One Aldwych hotel. Situated in Covent Garden in the heart of London's theatre land, the One Aldwych is a smart contemporary hotel with London's top sights on it's doorstep. Upon entering we were greeted by friendly door staff and we made our way through the stylish Lobby Bar to reception. The One Aldwych boasts a 3 Star Michelin Chef and we enjoyed flavoursome Basque Cuisine in the Eneko Bistro and also sampled the delights in the Indigo restaurant. Our room was spacious and well appointed, we were particularly impressed with the bathroom. The hotel facilities included a Health Club & swimming pool. We were very impressed with the friendliness and efficiency of the staff who were very attentive. Directly opposite the hotel is the 183year old Lyceum Theatre were we were going to see an evening performance of the Lion King which is now in its 17th year. We were met by several members of the Disney Marketing team who showed us up to the Ambassador Lounge were we were offered a pre-theatre drink and an informal chat. We were shown to our seats in the stalls. The theatre was packed to capacity with both young & old. Up went the curtain to show a spectacular African scenery. Then members of the cast came down the isles in a splendour of colourful costumes and in full dance & song, along with the amazing animals & birds, the children in the audience were absolutely captivated.
After almost 18 years the show has lost none of its vibrancy
After almost 18 years the show has lost none of its vibrancy. The cast of 50 held the audience in its spell as they wove the story with magical puppetry, colourful costumes and wonderful songs. They even managed to include some topical Brexit jokes! Special mention must go to the child actor Portraying the young Simba and to George Asprey who excelled as the dastardly Uncle Scar. This is a great family show and will continue to be loved by all. Definitely one which should not be missed!

CELEBRITY
Chris Pratt Having burst onto the big screen seemingly out of nowhere, Chris Pratt has quickly claimed the spot of Hollywood’s new leading man; what many people don’t realise is that Chris Jurassic World spent several years winning over TV audiences in multiple hit shows.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Chris was born on June 21st, 1979, in Virginia, Minnesota, but the Pratt family soon moved to Lake Stevens in Washington state, where Chris would go on to be raised. Early in life, Chris proved to be as friendly and likeable as many of his future characters, his fellow high school students have since described him as the type of guy who just fit in every social group; he was what some people would call a jock, a fullback for the football team, a track athlete and a state qualifying wrestler, but he didn’t let it go to his head and always had time and kindness for anyone he met.
24
After high school, Pratt went on to spend a little time at community college, before dropping out and moving to Hawaii with a few of his hometown friends. He began to work several small jobs, including selling coupons door to door, waiting tables and even a brief stint as a stripper; at the time Chris was living an unambitious life, spending his time drinking, fishing and living in the back of a van on the beach. He was pretty content with his lifestyle and never considered the possibility of becoming an actor, until one day, while working at Bubba Gump Shrimp as a waiter, he was discovered by actress/director Rae Dawn Chong, who was looking for a lead actor for her upcoming independent movie “Cursed Part 3.” Rae was immediately charmed by Pratt and decided to give him an audition later that week, Chris went on to nail the audition and was soon given his first ever role. The movie was extremely low budget and it seems that all copies may
have been lost, which might be a blessing seeing as it has since been described as “hilariously bad,” but that didn’t matter to Pratt, appearing in the movie had given him a taste for the acting life and from then on he began booking more auditions. In 2002, Chris landed his first recognisable role in the TV series “Everwood,” as sensitive jock Bright Abbott, who was goofy and lovable, but struggling with demons. Chris worked for four full years on the show, until its cancellation in 2006. Fortunately for the budding young actor, it wasn’t long until he was cast in the hit show “The O.C.” Pratt starred in a total of nine episodes of the California based drama series, as Che, a hippy, nature-loving activist who befriends lead character, Summer. Over the years, Chris appeared in several small movies, many of which were quickly forgotten, it wasn’t until 2008 that he performed in his first major movie, he landed a small role in the action movie “Wanted” starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie. Chris played McAvoy’s irritating co-worker Barry, who is eventually beaten with a computer keyboard. In 2009, Chris made an appearance in the new comedy series “Parks and Recreation,” his character, Andy Dwyer, was originally supposed to be a one off character, appearing in a maximum of 6 episodes at the beginning of the series, but Chris wowed the producers of the show so much that they decided to make Andy Dwyer a
series regular; the character went on to become one of the most loved of the show. Though “Parks and Recreation” would eventually go on to become one of the most popular comedy series’ on TV, it didn’t take off straight away, and Pratt continued to pop up with small roles in several movies over the coming years, including “Jennifer’s Body” and “Take Me Home Tonight.” It was on the set of the latter film where Chris met comedy actress Anna Faris, who was starring in the movie. The pair soon became friends after realising they shared a rather odd obsession, dead bugs. No, you didn’t read that wrong; both Chris Pratt and Anna Faris are long time bug collectors, which has to be one of the strangest ways for true love to begin, but it seems rather fitting for the hilarious Hollywood couple. Two years later and the pair were married, at a beautiful ceremony in Bali, Indonesia. In 2011, Pratt appeared in the Academy Award nominated Sports Drama “Moneyball” alongside Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, proving that he could comfortably step away from his usual comical roles. The following year, Chris and Anna became parents; their son, Jack Pratt, was born on August 25th 2012. Over the following years, Chris appeared in a variation of films, from comedies such as “The Five Year Engagement” and “Movie 43” to critically acclaimed dramas like “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Her.”

GULAB JAMUN INGREDIENTS
METHOD
For the dough balls: 225g Powdered Milk 110g Plain Flour 1¼ tsp Baking Powder ½ tsp Bicarbonate of Soda 350ml Milk 25g Butter, melted Vegetable Oil, for deep frying
For the dough balls, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, adding enough extra water to form a soft, sticky dough. Cover with cling film and set aside for 10 minutes. Shape the dough into small round balls.
For the sugar syrup: 200g Caster Sugar 100ml Water A few strands of Saffron
Heat the oil in a deep heavy-bottomed frying pan. It is ready when a breadcrumb dropped in will sizzle gently in it. (CAUTION: hot oil can be dangerous. Do not leave unattended.) Deep fry the balls until golden brown, then remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and set aside on kitchen paper to drain. Make a sugar syrup by heating the sugar and water together with the saffron until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is syrupy. When the dough balls are cool, add to the syrup and leave to soak for about 1 hour. The Gulab Jamun goes really well with Ice Cream! CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING 35

Follow all events you plan to attend on their social media platforms- most common tend to be Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and in some cases Instagram and you can then 'retweet', 'like' and comment in the lead up to include yourself in the mix and let others know you plan to attend, which may then strike up conversations beforehand, giving you more to talk about at the actual event. 3. Tweet at the event itself and tag in both the organisers and guests you're with and include a photograph/room shot as an added bonus! 4. Tweet and connect via social media after events you have attended to say it was great to meet that person - follow up with a question such as 'would you like to meet for a coffee etc..? "I'd really like to explore how I can help you further going forward" ... 5. Be efficient - we all know social media is often a job in itself and so make it easier for yourself by downloading the apps to your phone, so that you can connect and interact on the go. 6. Manage your social media for your business via platforms such as Hootsuite and Buffer, which are free to download and use for a certain amount of platforms and businesses- well worth exploring and what's more there are also apps for these too for on -the-go ease. 7. Connect via LinkedIn with those on your target list and don't 'cold connect', send a polite message /introduction/follow up message to those you invite to accept you and try to ensure you only connect with those you have had some form of contact with prior. 8. ALWAYS have a professional head-shot picture on your social media profiles and never use a selfie style shot or even worse no photo at all- people often think you are spam if they don't see a picture of someone human!

10. I'd like to finish with a quote from social media guru Gary Vaynerchuk, "When people are using their devises, its probable that almost half are networking on social media", therefore if you're not, you're likely to get left behind, so keep up with your competitors and ensure you are in the mix when it comes to networking via social media- Good luck! www.rsvipnetwork.couk

JOHN CLARKE Bodybuilder & Personal Trainer John 'The Fixer' Clarke In the next few issues of City Life Magazine, I will be working to help you reach your ultimate fitness goals and achieve long term results, with advice on personal training, nutrition plans and tips and tricks to get you in great shape! I started out playing football for a number of professional clubs including Derby County, Doncaster Rovers and Chesterfield, before I eventually worked my way up to Bodybuilding and of course, personal training. Since starting my personal training business 3 years ago, it has gone from strength to strength, I have worked with a wide range of people, both men and women at varying fitness levels from complete beginners to elite professional athletes. When working with a client, I make sure to cover their strengths and create the ideal conditioning programmes as well as diet and

supplement regimens in order to get them working to the best of their ability. I often have people coming to me who have been training for several years and are still unable to achieve the results they want, no matter how hard they work; fortunately I can help by creating specific plans for each individual, in order to help them reach their goals, this is where I was given the nickname “The Fixer”. Sometimes it just takes some very simple tweaks to radically improve and boost the results you get from your workout. A very common mistake I see time and time again is one that is easily fixed, not eating enough! When you skip meals or eat very little, your metabolism slows down to compensate for the lack of food, all this does is slow the rate at which your body burns fat and therefore cuts your chances of successful weight loss. I have some fantastic projects in the works for the future, I’m currently in negotiations to train
two well known British elite professional boxers, which will be a great privilege and an exciting challenge. Since setting up my personal training business, I put my Bodybuilding on hold, but now I am excited to announce that I am making a comeback and will be competing once again! I have also been offered a sponsorship by a fantastic clothing company www.beastmodenutrition.co.uk and I will be wearing and promoting their clothing line while competing. Finally, in the next edition of City Life Magazine, I will be showing you how I transformed two of my clients; look out for the next issue to read all about the training and diet plans I set out for them and how I earn the name “The Fixer”. I am now taking on new clients, email me at john@johnclarkepersonaltrainer.net to get started!

Almonds
56
These tasty little snacks have more benefits than many people realise, including improving your overall heart health, diabetes management and actually aiding in weight loss. Almonds are also a rich source of Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps to strengthen the immune system; it is also one of the most difficult nutrients to obtain in your diet.
To mix things up a little, try roasting almonds with a little olive oil and rosemary for an extra kick of flavour!
Avocados Though avocados may seem like nothing more than an Instagram trend, there's a reason this nutritious fruit is winning health experts over.
Avocado's are high in fibre, vitamins B, C, K and more of that elusive vitamin E, as well as folic acid, magnesium, copper and potassium! Not a fan of the texture? Try mashing avocado with salt, pepper and a little tabasco sauce and spread it on toast, trust us, it's delicious.
Cacao Powder Like chocolate, cacao powder contains flavonoids, which are known to help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. With fewer than 15 calories per tablespoon and containing almost no fat, cacao
FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
provides a strong chocolate flavor without the guilt.
Try transforming your dull, morning porridge by adding a couple of teaspoons of cacao powder and enjoy a sweet, chocolatey breakfast that's actually full of good carbs, natural sweeteners and antioxidants!
Quinoa Don't be deceived by these simple looking seeds, quinoa is actually extremely nutritious. Just 200g of cooked quinoa provides 5g of fibre, 8g of belly-slimming protein and over 10% of your daily vitamin B needs, as well as incredibly high levels of iron and zinc. Try adding quinoa to your salad, it's extremely versatile, pairs well with just about anything and is more nutritious than high-calorie croutons!
Kiwi This delicious little fruit is filled with essential vitamins, just one medium kiwi contains 117% of your daily vitamin C and 38% of your vitamin K. Kiwis also offer a variety of nutrients such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, copper, and manganese; in fact, one cup provides more potassium than the same amount of sliced bananas, with even less sugar and calories! Though they may taste sweet, there's no need to worry about cavities, there are just 7 grams of sugar in one kiwi, which is almost three times less than the amount in one apple.
Try spreading roasted garlic on a baked potato, instead of butter.
Spinach It looks like Popeye may have been onto something here, spinach is low in fat and even lower in cholesterol as well as high in zinc, protein, fiber, vitamins A, C, E and K, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese. In short, spinach is absolutely loaded with good things for every part of your body!
Kiwi's taste wonderful alone, but you can also try adding chopped kiwi to yoghurt!
Blueberries These wonderful little berries are low in calories and high in nutrients, at just 84 calories per cup, one serving of blueberries contains 14% of your suggested daily fiber and 24% of your vitamin C.
Kale Kale has a bad rep for being the most stereotypical health food out there, but don't you think there's a reason for that? Kale is so packed with nutrients, it's almost like a medication.
Studies have shown that garlic can boost the function of our immune systems and also have a significant impact on reducing blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.
Studies have also found that blueberries can lower blood pressure and speed up your metabolism, thanks to the high levels of antioxidant present.
Try adding spinach to soup, a simple tomato soup becomes Tomato Florentine when you add spinach!
Asparagus This herbaceous plant is a particularly rich source of glutathione, a detoxifying compound that helps break down carcinogens and other harmful compounds like free radicals, meaning eating asparagus may help protect against and fight certain forms of cancer, such as bone, breast, colon, larynx and lung cancers.
Try adding blueberries to cous cous for a delicious snack.
Try sauteing with some olive oil, garlic and maybe a little lemon juice or soy sauce to create a wonderful side dish!
Garlic Aside from the obvious benefits of deterring creatures of the night, garlic is actually a fantastic health food; low in calories and very rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Manganese.
Asparagus is also a great ally for weight loss, it's not only low in fat and calories, but it also contains lots of soluble and insoluble fiber and as a natural diuretic, asparagus helps flush excess liquid, combating belly bulge. Try roasting with a sprinkling of parmesan!
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
A hundred grams of uncooked kale contains just 33 calories, but it also contains a whopping 200% of your daily vitamin A requirements, 134% cent of vitamin C and an incredible 700% of vitamin K. In short, kale helps a great many things including bone health, blood clotting, and fighting infections.

WOODTHORPE HOSPITAL TO GET A FACELIFT
Woodthorpe Hospital, based on Mansfield Road, is starting works on a major refurbishment that stands to change the face of the outside and inside of the building. A big investment for both Woodthorpe Hospital and Ramsay Health Care, the refurbishment will take Woodthorpe's already well-equipped, modern building to the next level for patients and staff alike. The hospital begins the refurbishment imminently, and the works will be ongoing throughout the spring and summer. While there will be some short-term disruption, plans have been made to ensure that there is a minimal amount of disruption for patients throughout. The refurbishments will update all of the hospital's public areas – as well as upgrading all of the consulting and treatment rooms, it will rejuvenate corridors, create a new reception space, update all patient bedrooms, construction of a new private patient lounge, update waiting areas and provide an impressive new frontage for the building. It also stands to incorporate a larger gym and physiotherapy space, providing patients with an improved space to continue their road to recovery. The aim of the refurbishment is to significantly update and improve the facilities, offering enhanced services to patients. The refurbishment promises not to affect patient care, or impose on those heading to Woodthorpe Hospital for treatment over the coming months. Instead it promises to provide a new look and feel, refreshing surroundings for visitors, patients and staff. The site on which Woodthorpe Hospital now stands has provided healthcare to the people of Nottingham since 1877. Today, it is a wellequipped, forward-thinking hospital with 41 private bedrooms (39 with en-suite) two operating theatres, a day surgery unit with endoscopy facilities and a new Medical Admissions Unit.
Woodthorpe Hospital is a private hospital and is part of the Ramsay Health Care group, a leading independent provider of high-quality health care. Established in 1964, Ramsay has operations in the UK, France, Australia and Indonesia. In the UK Ramsay Health Care has a network of 36 private hospitals in the UK, spanning from Cornwall to Newcastle.
Woodthorpe is constantly developing its services and are proud of the comprehensive range of specialist departments and the high standard of care they provide to guests. Now the hospital stands to develop even further. Woodthorpe Hospital also hosts a number of free events throughout the year, inviting the public and local stakeholders into the hospital. These range from complimentary cosmetic surgery consultations, to GP education events, where local GPs join consultants at the Woodthorpe to find out more about the specialised treatments offered in the hospital. The refurbishment will mean these events can be hosted in a refreshed and new-look environment, The patient bedrooms are all being refreshed, and aim to provide a comfortable and pleasant environment for patients and will give visitors a fantastic chance to view to recuperate the new facilities. Mark Lacey, General Manager at Woodthorpe Hospital, is looking forward to the upcoming refurbishment.
General Manager of Woodthorpe Hospital, Mark Lacey
Mark says, “We are delighted that Ramsay Health Care UK, owners of Woodthorpe Hospital, continually invest in their hospitals. Over the next few months almost all areas of the Hospital will be completely refurbished, and will provide patients with an enhanced modern and relaxed environment in which to recuperate and recover. We are really excited about what's to come, and look forward to welcoming patients, old and new, to our new and improved surroundings.”
Ramsay Health Care UK invests in its Hospitals, and as a result attracts the very best health care practitioners. Although Ramsay Hospitals are privately run, the hospital welcomes patients that are medically insured, self-funded, or from the increasing number referred by the NHS. The future of the hospital shows further development to come, broadening Woodthorpe's space and environment even further. The Hospital also plans to incorporate a brand new theatre and the creation of a modern Day Surgery Unit. The addition of a new theatre will reduce waiting times, and ensure that patients are treated in a timely manner, while the new Day Case Unit will cater for patients who may not necessarily need to stay overnight – allowing them to return to the comfort of their own home on the same day of a procedure to recover in more relaxing and familiar surroundings. If you want to keep up with the changes and refurbishment project, keep an eye on the website where there will be news as it happens. Alternatively, if you want to find out about treatment at Woodthorpe Hospital, whether medically insured, self-funded or referred from the NHS please visit www.woodthorpehospital.co.uk.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Woodthorpe Hospital provides a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments across many speciality areas including hip and knee replacements, gynaecology, general surgery, ophthalmology, spine and back surgery, and cosmetic surgery. In addition to their expansive range of specialities, Woodthorpe set itself aside with treatments such as minimally invasive spinal surgery, and direct access endoscopy and MRI – this means patients can come straight in for
treatment following their GP referral, without the need for a pre-consultation. This allows patients to be seen with a quick turnaround, avoiding additional anxiety associated with waiting times - appointments are normally offered within 3-5 working days and reported back to the GP within 5 days.

The odds are high that most of the people reading this will develop a problem with their eyes at some stage! Often you also get glare with headlights coming towards you at night. Cataracts eventually worsen in severity and when they begin to interfere with your day-to-day life we intervene to fix them. Currently surgery to replace the affected lens is the only option. n the UK cataracts are thought to affect around half of those aged over 65 years to some degree, with this figure rising to 70% in those aged over 85. As a common illness in older individuals, the fact that people are living longer every decade means the prevalence of cataracts is on the rise and they are more common today than ever before.
Sight is precious and we need to preserve it. If you use a search engine and ask the question “what sense would you least like to lose”, eyesight comes top of the list. The windows are the eye to the soul and so we need to protect our vision.
How can we do that? See your optician regularly and they will check your eyes and refer you to the Hospital Eye Service if you need it. Be sensible and if something is wrong with your vision do not sit on it as if we can pick up problems early we can often treat them.
CATARACTS
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Cataract surgery is the most commonly carried out surgical procedure in the NHS. I personally do more than 1600 per year.
60
The lens is like a smartie inside the eye. It should be clear like a magnifying glass lens but instead it becomes cloudy resulting in blurred vision. The lens lies behind the pupil and it is usually transparent to focus the light onto the retina. On reaching the retina the light energy is transformed into nerve signals, which are then sent to the brain. As the cataract worsens less light reaches the back of the eye and the vision blurs.
If you are diabetic or have been on oral steroids the chances of you developing cataracts earlier is higher. When we take the cataract out we replace it with a new lens. If we did not replace the lens then you would require jam jar bottom glasses to see. Not a good look. We have the opportunity to take away your long or short sightedness by choosing the appropriate lens power to put into your eye. We effectively take the lens power from your spectacles and incorporate it into your intra-ocular lens. This can mean that people who have worn spectacles since they were a child will suddenly be able to walk around without glasses on. People who are “blind as a bat” first thing in the morning will no longer have to reach for their glasses before they can see the day. NHS cataract surgery is great. Patients are really happy and the results are excellent. However there are restrictions on what sort of lenses we can use. We are restricted to monofocal lenses. These lenses only set you for one distance. We take away your long or short sightedness we allow you to see reasonably clearly without spectacles in the distance but your intermediate and near vision is reliant upon spectacles. NHS cataract surgery is all about giving you good aided vision ie. vision with appropriate spectacles on. There is often residual
astigmastism (rugby ball shaped irregularity of the cornea) which makes your vision dependent on spectacle correction. With private care and premium lenses we can go beyond that and really look at giving you a bespoke treatment specifically tailored to your eye. If you have glaucoma we can place a clever stent/tube into the drainage network of the eye at the time of cataract surgery to bring the pressure inside the eye down and potentially get people off some of their drops. We can place incisions on the cornea to get rid of the corneal astigmatism meaning your vision without spectacles is optimal. Even better we can put lenses into the eye itself which are ordered specifically for you based on your eye measurements and correct your corneal astigmatism from within. If you want good distance, near and intermediate vision then there are premium lenses that can offer you the chance of it. Spectacle independence is within reach. We do not always achieve it and with every clever procedure there are compromises and not every lens is suitable for every patient. We now have clever computer assisted surgery which tracks the blood vessels of your eye in real time and projects an image into the microscope used for surgery to tell your surgeon exactly where to place the incisions and how to place the lens to deliver the best possible vision. This computer assisted cataract surgery is now available for both NHS and private patients at Circle Nottingham. The only place in the midlands to offer this. It is an exciting time for cataract surgery and we are pushing the boundaries of technology all the time. The Samling www.thesamlinghotel.co.uk Tucked away in a fold of the hillside above Windermere, is a small but exquisite hotel called The Samling. Hidden on its own private estate of beautiful, wooded hillside, it’s like no other place you have ever stayed. Wandering through its landscaped grounds and romantic gardens is enough to make anyone feel poetic. As soon as you enter The Samling you know you are in another world, a world of timeless tranquillity. There is no reception desk, because this is no normal hotel. Instead, it’s like coming to stay at a friend’s gorgeous country home, a friend with perfect taste, who happens also to be a fabulous chef and waits on you, hand and foot. Each room is tastefully designed, each with its own individual touches like a rain-shower, or a private conservatory with lake views. There is no best room here, each one is stunning. The award winning restaurant creates food made only from the very finest and freshest local ingredients, and the menu is innovative with a lightness of touch that is irresistible. The wine cellar can hold its own against some of the best restaurants in London. The restaurant is open to non-residents but you will have to book weeks if not months in advance, it really is that good. Unusually, but wonderfully, breakfast is always served in bed and a very lavish affair it is, too.
Hipping Hall www.hippinghall.com From the outside, Hipping Hall looks the quintessential country house hotel, but inside you’ll find something quite different and much more exciting. Your welcome here is warm and honest, and the atmosphere is relaxing but never stuffy or staid. Here you’ll find all the simple things are done perfectly. The rooms are stylish decorated with quirky themes mixing traditional glamour with a contemporary touch. The beds are sinfully comfortable and the furnishings are opulent with picture windows which flood the rooms with light. The bathrooms are dressed in natural stone with deep baths, steam showers and the toiletries are indulgent. For a private, romantic hideaway book Room 9, which is across the courtyard from the main hotel. The service here is flawless and discrete, and it’s tempting to think that the staff must be psychic because they are very, very good at what they do and clearly enjoy looking after you. Hipping Hall is renowned for its fine dining. Meals are served in the lofty, 15th century dining hall, but there is nothing old fashioned about this food. Dishes are exciting and contemporary, and are dreamt up by dynamic chef, Oli Martin. The restaurant is also justifiably proud of it impressive wine list.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Located in elegant, landscaped grounds The Gilpin Lodge Country House Hotel is the very last word in secluded luxury. Not content with being surrounded by beautiful national lakes, it has its very own private one. It has been family owned and run for over twenty years, and has recently been refurbished to a very high standard with absolutely no compromise. The public rooms are stylish, but inviting with velvet sofas, contemporary open fires and glossy magazines and books stacked on coffee tables. Never less than immaculate, each room or suite is spacious and airy, and many have stunning views. They’re all uniquely designed with chic soft furnishings and are a study of sophisticated comfort. Most rooms have French doors leading directly into the gardens, and some have their own exotic outdoor hot-tubs where you can look up at the stars and out over the private lake. The bathrooms are everything you ever dreamed of with hedonistic spa baths, drenching showers and designer fittings. If this doesn’t sound quite indulgent enough, Gilpin Lodge can offer you beauty treatments in the privacy of your own room, so you can enjoy an aromatherapy massage before breakfast. Dining here is pure pleasure, with a creative seasonal menu that sources its food from a selection of excellent local suppliers.

The Windermere Suites www.windermeresuites.co.uk The Windermere Suites is a unique bed & breakfast experience. Located in Windermere village, and originally built as a 19th century, genteel gentleman’s residence, the property has recently been brought bang-up-to-date by new owners Victoria & Colin Monk. In a previous existence Victoria was a designer and her flawless taste is evident in the eight stunning suites. Walking into the Hawkshead Suite is like walking into a futuristic jewellery box. The effect is dramatic and theatrical, with silver-gilt Louis XIV style furniture, indulgent metallic fabrics, lavish crystal-framed mirrors and cloud-soft, charcoal-grey, shag-pile carpet. Sink into its white leather sofa, scattered with silver velvet cushions and gaze out over the distant fells while sipping hot chocolate from a white porcelain Villeroy & Boch tea-cup. Its large ensuite bathroom is uber-sleek and state-of-the-art, with a square spa-bath big enough for two, a wall-mounted TV and a huge shower cubicle complete with a designer shower-head that changes colour in sequence with the ceiling spot-lights. Yes, really. Toiletries are courtesy of The White Company, because clearly only the very best will do. Breakfast is brought to your suite, and is elegantly served with luxury napery, heavy silver flatware and designer glasses. The Eggs Benedict, fresh ground coffee and home-made porridge drizzled with fresh almonds and syrup are not to be missed. Staff are welcoming and discrete, and literally nothing is too much trouble. They offer an excellent concierge service, and are happy to recommend restaurants and arrange taxis. Victoria and Colin are a charismatic and welcoming couple, who are dedicated to offering their guests pure hedonism and luxury escapism in a truly bespoke boutique B&B experience.
The Swan Hotel & Spa www.swanhotel.com With its scenic riverside setting and elegant Georgian looks, you could be forgiven for thinking The Swan Hotel & Spa was just another traditional Lakeland coaching inn, quiet and refined with probably too much chintz. You couldn’t be more wrong. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming with friendly staff who take care of you, effortlessly. The hotel interiors are decorated in a stunning fusion of heritage and contemporary styles, with rich jewel colours and touches of luxury wherever you look. There are myriad public rooms, but you can usually find a quiet corner, where you can sink into a deep velvet armchair and relax in front of a roaring fireplace. The bedrooms are stylish, with crisp cotton bedding and designer fabrics. The bathrooms are sleek, with natural stone, chrome and luxury Penhaligon toiletries. The hotel’s exclusive Vu Spa is light and airy, with views over the River Leven and a range of indulgent, ESPA treatments on offer. Or, if you want something more invigorating then head for a splash and a work-out in the smart pool & gym. The River Room restaurant is simply first class, with a diverse menu show-casing only the finest local, seasonal produce and an award winning wine list.
ESCAPE TO...
The Rothay Garden www.therothaygarden.com The M6 on a rainy Friday night is never a good place to be. But, pulling up outside The Rothay Garden you are greeted by the sound of silence, as the moon rises over the fells. Hidden away, on the fringe of the honey-pot village of Grasmere, from the outside the hotel is a period slate-built country house. But, stepping through its heavy glass doors you definitely won’t find the traditional chintzy interiors of most Lakeland hotels. The hotel has undergone a stunning three million pound refurbishment. It now offers guests jewel coloured velvet sofas, designer fabrics, stylish real fires and rich slate flooring. If possible, escape to the luxurious, loft-style Loughrigg Suite, which has a huge, sinfully comfortable bed, a smart lounge area with views over the distant fells and a boutique bathroom with a drenching shower and hand-made toiletries. Wrap yourself in a fluffy robe and slippers and wander down to the new Riverside Spa, and relax in the Herbal Pine Sauna, or the large Hydro-Spa as you look out over the hotel gardens. Dinner is served in the light and airy garden room, with tables stylishly dressed in heavy white linen, silver flatware and candlelight. The chefs at The Rothay Garden take their food very seriously, and the Roast Fillet of Cumbrian Beef, served with a red wine jus, celeriac puree and Kenya beans was simply superb. Their Sticky Toffee Pudding with cinder toffee ice-cream is probably illegal, it’s that good. Breakfast is equally indulgent with a choice of kedgeree, French toast & maple syrup or the legendary Fellwalker’s grill. Hotel owner Chris Carrs is passionate about high standards of presentation and customer satisfaction, and inspires his staff who are welcoming and attentive. Elliott Waugh, the hotel manager, is effortlessly charming, and ensures the service is faultlessly smooth. Serene, stylish and sophisticated, The Rothay Garden soothes your soul.

“What a night! RSViP went out of 2016 with a bang at one of the popular business networks favourites Chino Latino, who laid on a spectacular evening of wine, beer, glitter topped eggnog shots, canapés & sushi making... live music from the ever so talented Paul Martyn, live streaming from our social media partner Victoria Taylor of Blend Social and complimentary henna body art by Beaut-ology was on offer. Exhibitors included family run jewellers Temprell and guests left with luxury goodie bags courtesy of the venue, containing Elemis products and chocolate amongst other things. A lively atmosphere of business professionals from across the East Midlands filled the room and a fantastic time was had by all.” (Images courtesy of www.louisemillsphotography.co.uk
RSViP kicked off the year with a not unusually super busy evening at Lace market Hotel, filled with over one hundred business professionals who enjoyed signature cocktails, wine and canapés. Exhibitors included new Nottingham gym Kinetik and complimentary mini 1:1 consultations were offered by Wholefood Warrior during the evening.

Q5
Model : Audi Q5 2.0 TFSI Engine: 2.0 L 4-cylinder Power : 252bhp 0-62mph : 6.3 secs Top Speed: 147mph
Audi's newest Q5 has the makings to be the premium crossover that all others will be compared to. Crossovers have the unenviable position of being the car that everyone wants everything from. Consumers want utility, style, versatility during the winter, sportiness, and more — even if many of those things are mutually exclusive. None can do each thing perfectly, but some get closer to this lofty goal better than others. Fortunately, Audi has been fine-tuning its Q5 since 2008, and its second generation is about to hit the road. The 2017 Audi Q5 is all new, as nearly no parts carry over from its predecessor. It packs a 2.0-liter TFSI engine that generates 252 horsepower and sends it to all four wheels by way of a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
If the new Q5 lacks any familiarity with the old one, that's on purpose. The body has
92
been redesigned so that it looks different from every angle. The wheel arches are more emphasized and the whole package has a wider, more purposeful stance. From the grille to the tail, the Q5's new look puts it in line with the current Audi design language, bridging the gap between it and its big brother, the Q7. It's not all for looks, though. A lightweight, mixed-material construction — including high tensile strength steel as well as aluminium — has helped the Q5 shed around 200 pounds of weight compared to the previous model. Slim fit The Q5's cabin is comfortably spacious for four people, with decent enough room to spare for cargo. It isn't cavernous, but it's a decent fit for people travelling light. Seats in the rear can be adjusted and depending on where they're positioned, there's around 19.4 to 21.5 cubic feet of cargo volume to be had. If you're hauling
more stuff than people, the rear bench folds down to increase that volume to 54.7 cubic feet. Like the A4, the Q5 now has the Audi Virtual Cockpit available as an option. The 12.3-inch digital display cluster presents digital instruments as well as an information screen where the driver can access media, navigation, and other car systems. Tapping the “view” button on the steering wheel can even shrink the instruments down and pull up your menu of choice to prominence. A nice, 12.3-inch colour map right behind the wheel is as nice as it sounds, believe me. Audi's 8.3-inch MMI display comes along as well, so passengers can access functions while the driver focuses on the task at hand, or they can split the difference and have a multi-screen setup at their disposal.

The 2.0 TFSI engine pulls the Q5 decently along and can handle most demands competently.
Where it counts The 2.0 TFSI engine pulls the Q5 decently along and can handle most demands competently. On highways, the crossover is comfortable and quiet, but needs a bit of a kick for overtaking situations. Drive select allows the ride and engine responsiveness to favour comfort, efficiency, or dynamic driving. You can even leave it an auto and let the Q5 judge the best settings automatically or customize your preferences individually. Depending on your selection, the feeling is tangible and drivers can definitely feel the difference in settings through your hands, feet, and seat. Speaking of efficiency, the Q5 can be fitted with Quattro Ultra, an update to the all-wheel drive system that disconnects the rear axle to increase efficiency. The car senses when it's on a stretch of road that doesn't need all four wheels pulling it along, so it intuitively becomes front-wheel drive until you need all-wheel drive again. This is always on and doesn't pop-up on any displays. Like the old Apple adage “it just works.” Can't have Q5 without Quattro… Take the Q5 off road for some rural rambling, it indeed works as it should. Dirt paths aren't an incredible challenge, but
they are in parts muddy enough to be difficult. Throw in some elevation changes and deep ruts, and the road ahead would prove annoying to an ill-equipped ride. Thankfully, the Q5 makes it a drama-free experience and, even when things get choppy, there is enough poise to keep the erratic terrain from greatly disturbing the passengers. The 2.0 TFSI engine pulls the Q5 decently along and can handle most demands competently. However, much of this has to do with the air suspension the Q5 is fitted with. No one's going to mistake the Q5 for a sports car through sharp switchbacks, but it controls decently enough to stir in some fun without overwhelming fear. The car's lightweight build also comes into play as the Q5 brakes easily in the face of hairpins. For all the things you would ask of a crossover, the Q5 does its best to check each box – and succeeds remarkably well. It's a great, versatile jack-of-all trades in a premium package that's leaves little to be desired. The sharp looks and utility make it appropriate for a bevy of occasions and if you end up on a twisty road, you can still have fun, too.

Model: DB11 Engine: 5.2 Litre Twin Turbo V12 Power: 600bhp 0-62mph: 3.9secs Top Speed: 200mph
Aston Martin's DB11, the much-awaited successor to the DB9, is its first turbocharged model and an indulgent performance car. Under the skin, it's totally redesigned with a brand-new engine and feather-light, advanced materials. From the outside, it's a familiar update that's instantly recognizable as the most seductive and desirable British performance car.
CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING
Now, the only reason it seems odd that they've jumped from the DB9 straight to the DB11 is because they didn't. The DB10 does exist. For those who don't know, it was a concept specifically made to be used as James Bond's new car in the most recent film 'Spectre'. During the course of which, it ended up at the bottom of a river, and well, that was the end of that. It was no more than a movie-star concept with no intention of being produced for sale at all. It turns out, however, that it wasn't the end. Aston Martin liked the idea of a new DB
96
model, and so developed the new DB11. The car is intended to last for about six years and give Aston Martin four times the usual output at 14,000 examples a year. While being evidently different, the DB11 is still unmistakeably an Aston Martin. It's almost a cross between the DB9's angry appearance and that of the wildly futuristic DB10. From the front, it looks much like a DB9 with a facelift. Similar lights, with the only difference being the small indents on the inside of the headlights, a slightly reshaped chrome grille. The Ford-esque taillights have disappeared, and been replaced with the thin wiry LED braking lights, giving it a more modern look. They've also added more sharp edges on the back. More minor but noticeable details include silvery metal strips an either side of the roof, a lengthened bumper bar, even more sharp edges, and an overall fresher appearance.
The interior is lavishly wrapped in leather and carbon fibre, making it a truly British sports car. Leather seats, leather dashboard, leather stitching, leather glovebox, leather armrests, leather steering wheel, leather doors, you name it, everything is trimmed. Sporty and luxurious, just the way everyone likes a sporting GT. However, nowadays you'll be hard-pressed to find a brand-new sports car without a leather interior. The partially electronic display system is has now become fairly common in the sports cars of today. And the DB11 is no exception. Not to mention the fact that there are nine performance speakers as well. Plus an array of buttons that are probably best left alone, except for the air conditioning button, when it's summer. Mind you, in Britain you probably don't need to worry about that one too much.

The interior is lavishly wrapped in leather and carbon fibre, making it a truly British sports car.
Driving the DB11 is nothing short of driving something that can be described as absolutely impeccable. The DB11 is rearwheel drive, with soft and cushiony controlarm suspension both front and rear, powerful disc brakes both front and rear on the sporty aluminium rims, along with all the electronic safety systems you hope you never need. There's also a very nice 8speed automatic gearbox which makes for a nice and smooth transmission. All this, as you can most likely guess, adds up to a very comfortable ride . But not so comfortable that it's slow and sludgy. The DB11 goes from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 200 mph. For obvious reasons, that's not particularly comfy. It's safe to say the performance is unsurprising thanks to the engine behind it all. It's the classic, but improved, 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated twin-turbo V12. Quite a mouthful and quite a handful, and so it must be to drive also. Yet, if there's one brand who stick to the classics when it comes to power from the engine, it's definitely Aston Martin. It's one of those
few brands who continue to thumb its nose at the pressure to downsize. They've stuck to the roaring glory of the twin-turbo V12, and our shivering spines are glad for it. The ridiculous power this monstrous engine produces is not totally unbelievable considering its size. It's a very good 600 bhp at 6,500 rpm. So, why would you buy the Aston Martin DB11? Well, it's quite simple really. If you're looking for something worthy of the title 'supercar', not quite the price of a 'hypercar', something luxurious, but not quite Rolls-Royce or Bentley extravagance, something fast, but not quite Bugatti Chiron fast. If this best describes the car you're looking for, then what better car to buy than the Aston Martin Db11. After all, it's only ÂŁ155.000. Which isn't bad for the ultimate everyday supercar. Except when you start adding options. Which you will, because all Aston Martins must be equipped with ridiculous levels of ridiculous equipment. It's why James Bond drives one.
