Hello Loafer Readers! October is here! Such a great month. The leaves will be beautiful, pumpkins will be everywhere and kids are buying or making their Halloween costume. You may leave in the morning wearing short sleeves but you will need a jacket by the end of the day. Spring and Summer will always be my favorite but I do love fall. Fall breaks are coming up for some of the schools so I hope you are able to do some fun things with your kiddos. We have so many exciting things happening here at The Loafer. I am sure you have noticed a few changes such as my name here on this page. Kimberly needed to retire due to some health issues and I pleased to be able to keep the Loafer alive. I will keep you updated on things coming but you will want to watch our social media for the many contests coming. Please shop local when you can and also advertise local. We would cherish your business with us!
Take care and Be Kind!

The Month Month of of October October The By [https://EzineArticles.com/ expert/Linda_Hancock/152728] Linda Hancock Have you ever wondered about the origin of certain words? This weekend I was thinking about the word “October” and decided to look it up.
changed. Because the original Roman calendar only had eight months, October was the eighth month of the year. The “Oct” prefix represented the number eight (like octopus).
At that time, the last four months of the year all ended in “ember” which doesn’t seem to have a significant meaning.
Then, in 46 BC Julius Caesar decided to change everything. With the assistance of Greek mathematicians and astronomers he introduced a new calendar beginning on January 1, 45 BC. It had 365 days for three years followed by 366 days in the fourth or “leap year”. He added January and February which meant that October became the tenth rather than the eighth month of the year but left the name the same.
The prefix for the last four months of September, October, November and December, however, were derived from the Old French words representing the numbers seven, eight, nine and ten. Old French was converted to Old English and that was why the spelling slightly
Change came again with Pope Gregory XIII who, in 1582, altered the calendar because of equinoxes and the lunar cycles that were being used by the church. October 4 of that year became October 15 to make up for the “drift” that had been occurring. The year was now
The Roman calendar only had ten months as January and February were not included at that time. Winter had cycles that were divided into eight-day weeks but not into months until later.
recognized as 0.0075 shorter than it had been in the past. Interesting! This whole story recognizes the fact that things change over time and likely will continue to change. Now let’s think about what October means at a personal level: Transition - Nature turns green to bright orange and yellow before leaves drop and trees are bare. This symbolizes the move from summer to winter and reminds us to think differently about our behaviours as we approach winter and temperatures drop. Preparation - We put the garden hoses away and bring out the snow shovels. Thoughts go to canning and freezing the produce from the garden that will be enjoyed in the winter months. Flip flops are replaced with warm boots and gloves become part of daily wearing apparel. Surprises - October always offers random challenges. One day might offer good weather
and fresh air while the following day may cover us in snow with freezing temperatures only to be followed by nice weather again! Traditions - October also brings thoughts of Thanksgiving Day, Hallowe’en and gift buying for Christmas. No matter where you live in the world, October brings special meaning for people. What does this month mean for you? How will you make it a lovely time for you and those around you this year? And now I would like to invite you to claim your Free Instant Access to a complimentary list of 10 Steps to Making Your Life an Adventure when you visit http:// lindahancock.com From Dr. Linda Hancock, Registered Psychologist and Registered Social Worker Article Source: [http:// EzineArticles.com/?The-Monthof-October&id=10202467] The Month of October

Come Experience Epic Entertainment at the newly renovated Cameo Theater!
The Cameo: A Rich Past. An Epic Future. The Cameo Theater, one of the 15 oldest theaters in Virginia, is a landmark icon of the Bristol, VA/TN community (since it began entertaining the region on March 30, 1925). At the time of its opening, The Cameo was the premier and most state of the art facility in the region. The Cameo provided family entertainment such as films, plays and live music until the 1970’s, when modern malls and cineplexes brought a swift and sad end to The Cameo (and many vintage theaters across the country). Three theaters were eventually torn down in the city and many felt The Cameo should experience the same fate. For over 40 years, The Cameo spent most of its time neglected. The building sat with a crumbling façade, “For Sale” sign in the window and no real plan from anyone on how this gem of downtown could be brought back to the people of the region…until now.
About the Owner, Brent Buchanan The Cameo found its hero in local Bristolian and music lover – Brent Buchanan. A lifelong resident of Bristol, Brent had never been inside the theater until the day a realtor agreed to meet him for a tour. Brent saw past the crumbling, yet surviving, ceilings and chipped paint. “It has a soul! I fell in love as soon as I walked through the doors. I began to see a future here.” Thus began a three-year process to purchase the building. There were many ups and downs along the way; however, Brent’s drive and determination to save the theater never wavered. On October 12, 2017, Brent proudly called himself the owner of The Cameo. A small first step, due to the extensive renovation, Brent’s passion to save and protect the theater has brought it to the cusp of recapturing its former greatness.

By [https://EzineArticles.com/expert/ Karan_Dubey/1999901]Karan Dubey Well, it’s a marvelous night for a Moon dance, With the stars up above in your eyes A fantabulous night to make romance, ‘Neath the cover of October skies And all the leaves on the trees are falling, To the sound of the breezes that blow And I’m trying to please to the calling, Of your heart-strings that play soft and low And all the night’s magic seems to whisper and hush, And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush. It has already been 4 days since October arrived. Yes I know this, but I don’t really realize it until tonight, when I take some time out of my tedious life, listening to some Van Morrison while lying ALONE on the rooftop, eyes closed, underneath the clear naked October sky with the beautiful cover of the infinite stars
twinkling like little fireflies, while the cool wind blows past me carrying the slight chill of the coming winter, and that’s when I finally realize the arrival of my favorite month. Favorite why? I don’t know. But there is something in the air, in the atmosphere, at this time of year that makes it unique and special compared to other months. Maybe it is the arrival of the Autumn season, when the shredding of leaves from the trees makes it a sight to behold. The change of colors from green to all sorts of yellow, golden and red makes it the most beautiful season of the year.
child I have always ADMIRED this time of year. Running around and catching those colorful dried leaves when they got blown away by the gust of the wind was one of my favorite pass time. The streets and even our lawn used to be full of these dried, shredded leaves. I am sure my mom didn’t appreciate the season for this reason alone ;). I mean why would she? she would clean the whole lawn, and it was a really big one, and she would sweep it all by herself with her broom first thing in the morning but even before she was done, one gust of wind and it’s all back again! But that was a long time ago, I never asked her about her favorite time of the year, maybe I would ask her tomorrow.
But that was then, once you grow up you kind of drift away from yourself and forget about all those beautiful memories that Or maybe it is because of some relief, made your childhood special. With the finally, from the scorching red hot unwanted job of surviving and keeping up summer sun to a more merciful and with the society, we forget to appreciate the understanding October sun that makes it simple beauty of this nature, we ADMIRED the best part of the year especially here in so much as a child. This weekend was an extremely busy one for the restaurant where I work; probably the busiest I’ve experienced in my short time there. And like all establishments who pay the bills servicing the masses, that high volume didn’t come without its fair share of stress and drama. But I’ll get back to that in a minute. I’ve worked in the service industry in some capacity since I was 16 years old, minus the 2 years I spent in the office at a car dealership. During my almost 20 year tour of duty, I’ve grown to love that world, although some might call that Stockholm Syndrome. I love the contrast that exists between the front of house (the dining room) and the back of house (the kitchen); the way there can be pure pandemonium transpiring mere feet away from guests while they laugh and clink glasses over upbeat music and are never none the wiser. I thrive off the anxiety of being in the weeds (when you’re over-extended trying to service more people than you can handle.) There is a certain high that comes from doing absolutely nothing, then suddenly spinning in 15 different directions while the demands of 20 people run like a ticker tape through your head, then dropping back off to nothing again all in the span of 4 hours. I thrive off the adrenaline required to survive in these conditions, and the trauma bonds that are created from such conditions amongst the staff. There is no better group dynamic than the one that exists within the restaurant industry. In no other occupation will you find more heart-warming functioning dysfunction. The idea of HR is borderline laughable, with most of the staff sharing food, tears, living quarters, dirty jokes, drugs, alcohol, sexual relations or all of the above at once. At the best restaurants, management knows where their employees’ individual boundaries lie
and have their back when those lines are crossed. At the worst, nepotism, narcissism, greed and cowardice prevail, creating uncomfortable and unstable circumstances for everyone. I have worked in both, and thankfully my current establishment is of the former and not the latter persuasion…but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Which brings me back to this weekend.
While my male cohorts have never had the pleasure of being told to smile while 2 customers argued over what size their breasts are, they also have never had a man slip a $100 bill into their apron pocket every time they came to the table just to talk to them…6 times in a row. Learning how to survive and thrive in service requires a degree of hardening, boundaries and self-assurance that not a lot of We had a situation on Saturday night women can achieve, nor should they where a man in his 50s got aggressive be required to. It is her first job and she’s as intelligence, I know my dignity, I know quiet and timid as a field mouse, so how to tell someone their behavior is when I saw this grown man getting unacceptable in a professional way, I off on asserting his power over a child know my own shortcomings, I know in high school, it triggered a lot of when to walk away and when to let suppressed memories and emotions management take over, and I know how from over the years and something in far is too far for my level of comfort and me snapped. am able to communicate that clearly For all my warm feelings toward the and directly when that line is crossed. service and hospitality business, It’s taken decades of being groped, there is definitely a dark side. And being talked down to, being screamed while I don’t like to play the “woman at in my face by mentally ill business minority” card, women definitely are at owners, sobbing in walk-in coolers, a disadvantage in this male-dominated and countless night terrors from job industry. And even at my age now, asserting my dominance over a man I occasionally have to endure the wrath with an inferiority complex, reducing of a miserable person who is projecting him to stuttering until he shuts up their own inner demons as a way to feel completely; it’s a very therapeutic form of vindication for the jerks who have superior, because I’m a “lowly server” hurt me over the years. just like our young hostess. herself when she finds herself in the next situation. Because sadly, we all know there will be another. Whether she stays in this industry or not, women need to recognize and assert their voice in the workplace, or they will be mistreated. Use your womanly wiles to your advantage and don’t feel guilty; men do it all the time, but it’s with expense accounts and perks. Know your boundaries and be firm in them. And don’t react on your emotions, instead work from a headspace of logic. Most important, don’t let your trauma be your detriment. Use it as a learning opportunity and grow from it; it will only serve to make you unstoppable in all aspects of life. As for the idiot, he’s blacklisted from our hospitality group and good news travels fast in the small world of restaurants. And let’s just say I never forget a face and eagerly anticipate the day I’m off the clock, off company property and can pick up where we left off on our little conversation, in case he missed the memo on why gross old men shouldn’t be mean to little girls who just got their driver’s license.

Back in July I discussed "Batman: The Long Halloween Part 1", and now that part 2 of the animated film has been released it's time for a follow up. If you saw the ending of the first film you know the villainess Poison Ivy (voiced by Katee Scakhoff) took control of Bruce Wayne (voiced by Jensen Ackles) leaving fans anxious for the concluding chapter of the film. The fist film featured a battle between two Gotham City crime families, and one of the families, headed by Carmine Falcone, has Poison Ivy forcing Wayne to sign his wealth over the the Falcone dynasty. Before Bruce signs over his holdings to Falcone, Catwoman comes to the rescue and thwarts Ivy's efforts. While Bruce was out of commission, the Holiday killings of the first film have continued in the new film, this time happening on Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day and April Fool's Day, and have targeted both the Falcone and Maroins crime families. Once Bruce has been freed, he can once again investigate as Batman, and when the Dark Knight is back in action, a new murder occuring on Mother's Day. The same evening of the murder, the Scarecrow

(voiced by Robin Atkin Downes) escapes from Arkham Asylum, and has a fight with Batman. The fight does not end well for Batman who ends up being injected with a fear toxin courtesy of Scarecrow. Batman ends up in Crime Alley in a fear induced state, and is once again rescued by Catwoman (voiced by the late Naya Rivera). Thank goodness Catwoman has been around to rescue Bruce from two perilous situations. While the Holiday killings continue on Father's Day, the Fourth of July, and Labour Day, other characters show up, including Falcone's daughter Sofia, and the Mad Hatter, who teams up with Scarecrow. Meanwhile, the story line of Harvey Dent as his eventual change into the villain Two-Face is carried over from Part 1, and his relationship with Batman and Commissioner Gordon becomes strained. Dent's story, as Batman fans know, is tragic and is made even more so when we see his often strained marriage. The film also features Solomon Grundy (voiced by Fred Tatasciore), a zombie-like character who dwells in the sewers of Gotham City. Grundy has helped various inmates of Arkham escape, and they plan an attack on Falcone's building. Poison Ivy, Mad Hatter and Scarecrow attack part of the city to distract the police, in order to allow Grundy, the Joker (Troy Baker), and the Penguin (David Dastmalchian) to capture Falcone and supposedly kill his daughter Sofia. There is a lot of mystery and intrigue occurring in this film, with characters galore adding to the fun. Of course in the end the identity of the Holiday killer is revealed, and is a bit shocking. The film ends, as it began, on Halloween night, and this time the
ending is happy with Bruce and Selina watching Alfred hand out some candy to trick or treaters. Don't miss the post-credits scene, which sets up a follow-up film which I strongly feel will be a Justice League effort. I remember when I read the original 13-issue comic back in 1996(!), I felt the storyline would make a great live-action or animated film. Thankfully many years later we have an animated version of the popular and critically acclaimed story line. I do find it odd the first part of the film was rated PG-13,
but the second part is rated R. I supposed the heightened violence of the second part led to the rating. Nevertheless, when taken as a whole film, "Batman: The Long Halloween" Part 1 and 2 is one of the best efforts from the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series. On Blu-ray and streaming on various outlets including Apple TV. (Rated R)

I had a very good record-buying weekend. If you’re someone who collects records then you know that every now and then a particular unique cosmic event happens where you find several things that you’ve been wanting for a long time in short succession. The crown jewel of the weekend was finding an original 1989 pressing of The B-52’s album “Cosmic Thing.”
Stuff” which was only released on vinyl in a few small foreign territories so I don’t count it. As I excitedly drove home with the record I was feeling very elated. Not only for finally finding a copy of “Cosmic Thing,” but a large amount of delight over my love affair with music that’s been going on my entire life. Then, I chuckled to myself thinking about the few times in my life some normal/ boring people have said something related to my musical library. Something that is the fastest way to make sure you’re never invited into my home again.
And, to my ears, it sounds better! But the fastest way to get me to add you to a list of people who I’ll think less of and will quickly judge is to say one simple phrase when I show you my records.
“You’re never going to listen to all that, what’s the point?” This phrase, or an occasional variation thereof, has been said to me on at least three occasions. It’s always surprising to me after I’ve clearly That album is extremely rare in beamed about my collection that its original release, and only in someone says this to me. its place and I do use it—though I do want streaming to start paying artists more. But streaming feels like you’re renting the music. It’s not really yours. Vinyl? It’s mine. It’s mine so much it’s literally etched into the plastic. Besides my personal feelings about vinyl, there’s something else about saying that to me that’s annoying. It’s rude. I don’t go into your home and say your furniture and wallpaper look like garbage? Why come into my home and say that something which is clearly a source of pride and joy for me has no value in your eyes? It annoys me. It should annoy you if I would show up and insult your kitchen. Why people think they have a pass for making a comment about my records is beyond me. But I’ll tell you one thing. It’s the quickest way for me to know who to disassociate with. See you next week.
