Hello Loafer Readers! I hope everyone is enjoying this fall weather. I do not care for the cold so I am happiest in the mild temperatures myself. I am so happy to present the LOL Comedy Corner Bar & Grill on our cover this week. They say laughter is the best medicine and honestly couldn’t we all use a little medicine for the soul right now?! My husband and I went to the LOL Comedy show with some family and friends and I laughed until my ribs hurt! Please check them out and do what you can to support our local businesses. I appreciate the support you give our Loafer very much! Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you with your print, online or social media advertising.

Take care and Be Kind!

East Tennessee State University welcomes All Time Low and Swae Lee for the Student Government Association Fall 2021 Outdoor Concert on Monday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. This concert will take place at the CPA “Back Yard” adjacent to the Wayne G. Basler Center for Physical Activity, with gates opening at 6 p.m. All Time Low started out as a high school cover band in 2003 in the suburbs of Baltimore before morphing into a melodic pop-punk act. Their albums include “So Wrong, It’s Right” and “Future Hearts,” a pop album titled “Last Young Renegade,” and their latest album in their signature style, “Wake Up Sunshine.” Members include singer/guitarist Alex Gaskarth, guitarist Jack Barakat, bassist Zack Merrick and drummer Rian Dawson. American rapper and singer/ songwriter Swae Lee first found success as part of the Southern sibling hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd. At the height of the pair’s mainstream success with the 2016 chart-topper “Black Beatles,” he branched out as a solo artist, maintaining a strong chart presence with collaborations with French Montana, Travis Scott, Post Malone, and Kane Brown and Khalid.

Lee’s latest single as a solo artist is “Dance Like No One is Watching,” and he is featured on Alicia Keys’ single, “La La.” ETSU students receive one free ticket and may purchase up to four guest tickets for $10 each with valid ID. ETSU staff and faculty may purchase up to five tickets for $10 each with valid ID. Tickets must be purchased using ID Bucs at the Carrier Center front desk on the second floor of the D.P. Culp Student Center. Public tickets are available in advance through Sunday, Oct. 24, for $18 each at etsu.edu/concerts. Public tickets will be available the day of show at the gate for $25 each. A Brief History of Standup Comedy in the United States By [https://EzineArticles.com/ expert/Jeff_McKinstry/561511] Jeff McKinstry There has been humor in the United States for as long as it has been a country. After all, life was tough and laughing was one important way to cope and survive. However, standup comedy as an art form took a while to evolve and catch on. The history is rich and whole books have been written on the subject. This article will serve as a very annotated version so that the reader can use it for a “jumping off place” to study more deeply those parts that are of interest. One of the first types of organized standup comedy in the United States was the minstrel show that came on the scene in the early 1800s. It was sometimes referred to as “black face comedy”. Although appalling by 21st century standards, this brand of comedy was widely popular when it started. The all white casts would paint their faces black and begin using the the stereotypical mannerisms of the blacks for their material. It has always been said that comedy reflects the times. And like it or not, this was the state of the country in the 1800s. The minstrel show remained popular through to the mid 19th century and began to loose favor as the United States views on racism and slavery began to change. As the minstrel show’s popularity waned, vaudeville began to be a popular form or standup or prestandup comedy. In addition to comedy, vaudeville acts included dancers, magicians and actors. Some shows even included clownlike acts. Just a few of the main comedians of this brand of comedy are - Fred DuPres, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Groucho Marx and the Marx Brothers and Ezera kendall. Vaudeville comedians relied less on the spoken word for laughs and instead used, props and physical comedy. This is because they did not have microphones and instead had to rely on the physical type of comedy.

Vaudeville although popular for a long time gave way to comedic performances on the newly invented radio. This was the beginning of “comedy for the masses”. But while this was very good news for the general public, it came with a price for the performers. They could no longer rely on the physical aspect of their comedy, they now only had their material and timing to get their audiences to laugh. Some comedians were able to make the transition from Vaudeville to more of a spoken word type of comedy. Some of the notable comedians that made this transition are: Jack Benney, Bob Hope, Milton Berle and

And comedians began to make audiences of course the topics covered were laugh. They were Dick Gregory, Bill constantly pushing the boundaries Cosby and Redd Foxx. As the racial bounds were being pushed, the bounds of what society would accept. As the sexual revolution and anything of acceptable humor began to test the goes mentality became prevalent in limits. Most notably, the comedy of society, the comedic topics did also. Lenny Bruce set off what some say is The 1980s, 1990s and 2000s mainly the beginning of an anything subject followed the patterns in the previous decades, more exposure and pushing the envelops. There were however a few notable developments from these decades. MTV and Comedy Central made comedy more accessible to more people. Not only were the public getting to see the big name comics, they were being exposed to up and coming comics via the new television networks. A recent phenomenon is a comedy based reality show called “Last Comic Standing”. This show gives the television viewers exposure to more inexperienced comics that could one day make it to the big leagues. There is no telling where standup comedy will take us in the future. If the past is any indication, there will be more access by the public to standup comedians and they will always be looking for a way to make them squirm by pushing the limits of what is acceptable in society.

The Birthplace of Country Music (BCM) is among the recipients of the Tennessee Governor’s Arts Leadership Award in part for the organization’s role in preserving the Bristol region’s rich music culture and the legacy of the historic 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings. “We sincerely thank Governor and First Lady Lee and the Tennessee Arts Commission for recognizing BCM’s hard work and contributions to the arts,” said BCM Executive Director Leah Ross. “This is a great achievement for our organization and we are honored to have been chosen.” Located in Historic Downtown Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia, BCM is the parent nonprofit of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the annual Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival, and WBCM Radio Bristol. BCM has emerged as one of the most distinguished cultural institutions in the Northeast Tennessee/Southwest Virginia region, having earned national recognition for its innovative museum model and multifaceted programming. For more than two decades, BCM has remained devoted to preserving and telling the story of Bristol’s critical role in the history and

development of country music, while also creating new opportunities and exposure for contemporary artists and audiences to explore the evolving sounds of the region. BCM continues to celebrate the extraordinary musical legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions, where the

Lee in a previously released statement. “Maria and I congratulate each of them, and we are proud of their accomplishments.” The Governor’s Arts Awards are presented in three different categories - Arts Leadership, Distinguished Artist, and Folklife Heritage. The recipients come from all walks of life and symbolize the tremendous variety of the arts and culture of Tennessee. “The awards are a testimony to the value that the arts bring to our communities, our schools, and our lives,” said Jan McNally, Chair of the Tennessee Arts Commission.

served soup as the first course at 6:15 p.m. The main course will be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by dessert. The menu will include pork loin stuffed with apples, cranberries and nuts; pork belly Brussel sprouts; curried pumpkin soup; red corn pudding; carrots; asparagus; and potatoes. Dessert will consist of pumpkin sorbet. The peppers, made into jam, will be served with the hors d’oeuvres at the meet-and-greet. Honey from the beehives on the Doak House grounds will be spread over the pork loin and will be used as sweetener in the unsweet tea at the meal.

In a joint venture with Rural Resources, Tennessee’s first higher education institution will host the Farm to Table dinner Thursday Oct. 21, at the Doak House Museum. The main feature is a splendid meal that will include items grown at the Doak House and Rural Resources, such as corn, pumpkins, chestnuts and peppers. “This event is tremendous opportunity to spend a relaxing evening outdoors enjoying a delicious meal cooked in a different manner,” said Dr. Peter Noll, associate professor of public history and museum studies. “We are excited to partner with Rural Resources and use home-grown ingredients as part of the menu and know the community will enjoy the ambiance.”

Meal preparers will accommodate special dietary requests. “We are confident our guests will relish the change of pace offered by this uniquely constructed meal in a beautiful setting,” said Rush Bakshi, Rural Resources’ chef. “We are pleased to work closely with Tusculum on this event and anticipate this meal will create further interest among our guests in using homegrown ingredients in food prepared for their families and friends. As we get closer to Halloween I thought it might be a good idea to write about people, places and things that possibly pertain to the day or for most people like me the entire month. Ever since childhood I have been drawn to artists with a little darker nature. Not demonic satanic nature, just circumstances that made their lives a little darker than everyone else’s. To name just a few, my favorite writers are Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. My favorite painter has always Been Van Gough, and my favorite composer is Beethoven. If you compare them all you can easily see that each one faced severe adversities. Some overcame and some were overcome. However it is the writers I wish to speak of in this week’s column.

grave but once the obit from Griswold was published he was given a proper headstone. Of course today nearly everyone one on earth recognizes Poe as the father of the modern crime story. Not to mention his science fiction writing and of course horror contributions. I might add as of this writing My son and I will be visiting Poe’s grave in Baltimore Maryland, also the museum in Richmond.

On the other hand for some reason very few people today know of H.P Lovecraft. I remember as a child watching a movie called “the unnamable.” It was back in the 1980s and of course it was a little cheesy but in all its cheesiness it was eerie. The story centered on a haunted house where a menacing looking creature roamed. It fascinated me to no end Poe of course has always been a and I watched the movie every time favorite of mine. He was never truly it was aired. As I got older I realized recognized for his contributions until the movie was loosely based on an he died. And then what made him H.P Lovecraft story. This intrigued famous? His worst critic. That’s right, me enough to seek out Lovecraft. Of the critic Rufus Wilmot Griswold wrote course there was no internet back some scathing remarks about Poe in then so I used the only Google I had hopes of discrediting Poe upon the available and that was the local late author's demise. However the library. I checked out any and all the decided effect was reversed and Poe books Lovecraft had written and I was became a hotly sought after writer. amazed at the man's imagination and Besides Has anyone ever heard of RUFUS? Exactly! Up until this Poe’s remains were left in an unmarked

the depths he went when it came to the genre of horror and science fiction. Especially in the time in which he had lived. He no doubt like many others was influenced by Poe but he created some very memorable characters like Chthulu for instance. And like Poe, Lovecraft suffered from immense hardships. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft spent most of his life in New England. After his father was institutionalized for general paresis in 1893, he lived affluently, but his family's wealth dissipated soon after the death of his grandfather. After this point, he was living with his mother in reduced financial conditions, until she was institutionalized in 1919. He became involved in the United Amateur Press Association and wrote essays for them. In 1913, he wrote a critical letter to a pulp magazine that ultimately led to his involvement in pulp fiction. He became active in the speculative fiction community and was published in several pulp magazines. Lovecraft moved to New York when he married Sonia Greene in 1924. He then joined the small "Kalem Club", and would later become the center of a wider body of authors known as the "Lovecraft

Circle". They introduced him to Weird Tales, which would become his most prominent publisher. Despite this, his time in New York took a toll on his mental state, which coincided with increased financial pressures. Finding social and financial conditions there intolerable, he returned to Providence in 1926. After returning to Providence, he became increasingly active in his literary output, producing some of his most prominent works, including "The Call of Cthulhu", At the Mountains of Madness, The Shadow over Innsmouth, and The Shadow Out of Time. He would remain active as a writer until his death from intestinal cancer at the age of 46. Most anything you want to know about Lovecraft and his works are easily found now with the use of the internet. I recommend you seek him out. He is a very interesting character. While speaking with a co-worker during opening yesterday, he said something that very accurately summed up the current state of my life. “I feel like even on my days off, I don’t get days off.” I’m fairly certain I’m not the only person out here who empathizes with his sentiment. If there is one environmental factor that is a fail-proof way to stress me out, it’s lack of time for myself. Call it selfish, call it only child syndrome, but in order to function at my best for myself and others, I need a certain amount of quality “me time.” It is in this area as of late where I am in a severe deficit and it’s really making me come unhinged. Beginning this week I’ve started working a lot more and with the holidays approaching it’s going to be even busier for everyone. While work itself doesn’t bother me, it’s just losing that time and being forced to crunch all my other “necessaries” into the hours that should be reserved for much needed leisure and relaxation that is the issue. I believe it is healthy and essential for people to make time for things that bring them joy; burnout and depression are bore from having nothing to look forward to. Now that I’m back in service my schedule has completely flipflopped and my work day begins at 4pm and ends around 10pm. This means I must accomplish all my chores like cleaning house, laundry, gym, running errands, and groceries early in the day. While that schedule certainly has

its perks, i.e. less people in the gym and store, banks are open, etc, it already feels like I’ve put in a full day’s work before I’ve even clocked in to do a full day’s work which is a little exhausting. And in order to fulfill all those duties prior to 2pm when I have to start getting ready for my shift, I have to begin around 8am, which means I have to come straight home, walk my dogs and go immediately to sleep. Because of my late hours and busy days, I get no socialization time for friends or dating. So on my much needed 2 day breaks, I’ve found myself overscheduling with others I want to see and leaving no time for myself. This is where I’ve got to make time management a priority or I’m going to snap. Trying to schedule lunch dates, while inconvenient for my schedule, works ok for initial meetings with guys. But of course a second date is preferred in the evening or a weekend when they have more time and I cannot accommodate. So I try to schedule them on my days off, which means I’m sacrificing much needed time with my close friends who actually know me and aren’t just trying to get in my pants. Not to mention the time I’m sacrificing that belongs to me; I’ve lost every bit of that. I’m a pretty social creature, but that becomes very draining. One of the things that keeps me sane is staying home and cooking a meal for myself, or creating a charcuterie smorgasbord on my coffee table while watching my favorite classic horror or comedy movies. I derive a great deal of mental relief from an evening at home in my most comfy sweats, letting my bare face marinate

in moisturizer with a glass of wine and not feeling the burden of entertaining someone else. Especially now that I work at an expensive “occasion” restaurant where my sole purpose is to ensure my guests are having a memorable experience and are the star of the show over and over again. So now that I’ve identified the problem, how am I going to solve it? I know I’m not alone in this frustration- honestly I don’t know how you people with children do it. I’ve found that making lists streamlines a lot of productivity, freeing up hours that might otherwise be wasted. When I come home at night is the perfect opportunity to manage my time. As I lay down to unwind in bed, instead of scrolling aimlessly on social media, I can examine and delegate my tasks- what didn’t get done today, what needs to be done tomorrow, and even what I can do to meet goals for the week, month or year. That way I wake up with a sense of purpose and a game plan, alleviating a lot of stress. I also really need to prioritize who I’m allocating energy to. I’m clearly craving some sort of connection and companionship, but the reality is, most of these people aren’t compatible with me in the present moment, thus becoming just a succubus on my valuable time. I need to get to the bottom of who is actually aligned with my needs and is adding VALUE to my life and not STRESS. This assessment isn’t with the intention of being hurtful, it’s just at this time and age, I don’t have time to waste anymore. Once I clear up that space, I now have room for spending time with

friends and family. As for those precious days off alone, sometimes you just have to say no. You can’t be everything to everyone, especially when you’re the one in need of healing. It’s ok to politely decline invitations or bail on a nonpressing commitment in favor of prioritizing your own needs. That old saying about saving yourself first on the airplane or else you can’t save others still rings true for a reason; you can’t function at your best for those closest to you if you’re secretly drowning. This plague of being overworked and stressed isn’t unique to me; I know to a degree most of us feel this way. With the holidays approaching at lightning speed, it might be a good idea for everyone to get a handle on inefficient hours and manage their time accordingly. For me at least, it’s a must at the top of my lengthy to-do list.

James Bond is finally back on the big screen and it has been quite a wait. The pandemic caused the 25th film in the franchise "No Time to Die" to be postponed numerous times, but 007 is now fighting the bad guys at a theater near you. There is nothing in filmdom like the opening sequence of a Bond film, and the title track is performed by pop star Billie Eilish. For fans of Daniel Craig's Bond, of which I am one, this is sadly his last outing as the superspy. When Craig first burst onto the screen in 2006 (!) as Bond in "Casino Royale", he quickly became my favorite Bond. Craig brought a much needed roughness to the character, who in my opinion had become a bit of a caricature. One could even tell the successful "Jason Bourne" film series had an impact on the take on the character. Craig immediately eased into the role and made it his own, despite the one time outrage of a "blonde James Bond." His Bond film "Skyfall" from 2012 became the top moneymaker in the franchise, and the new film is on track to be uber successful. The film begins five years after

the last outing, "Spectre", and finds a retired Bond living a nice life in Jamaica, until his CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) convinces 007 to join him in the search for a missing MI6 scientist, who has a deadly virus in his possession of which is coveted by the criminal organization Spectre. The film also flashes back to the childhood of Bond's latest love Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux) and her witness of a family tragedy at the hands of the villain of the film Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek). Safin later devises a plan to take down Spectre, but eventually has a conflict with Bond over Swann and her daughter Mathilde (Lisa-Dorah Sonnet). The film introduces a new 007, Nomi (Lashana Lynch), who has taken over the 007 title after Bond's retirement, which doesn't exactly please our hero. The two 007's eventually team up after an initial conflict of interest, and prove to be a formidable duo. Speaking of conflicts, Bond initially falls out with M (Ralph Fiennes), but eventually M realizes it's better to be on the side of Bond. When all the good guys finally realize they need to work together to defeat Safin, you know all will not end well for the evil doers. In addition to the aforementioned characters, all of the Craig series favorites are back, including Ben Whishaw as equipment master Q, and Naomie Harris as M's secretary Moneypenny. All the characters have the opportunity to interact with Bond, and there is a great fight sequence with fellow agent Paloma (Ana de Armas), whose appearance enlists the look of walking the red carpet instead of battling villains, but after all this is a Bond film. The film features a heartfelt moment when Bond visits the grave of former love

Vesper Lynd, who died in the "Casino Royale" film. Speaking of heartfelt, despite all the thrilling action and witty dialogue, there are many moments in this film where you may shed a tear or two. You have been warned. The storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat, and is available in the 3D format if you desire to don those glasses. I cannot say enough about Craig's run as Bond, and he will always be my

favorite among the previous Bond actors. The film has shocking moments throughout, but none as shocking as the ending, which left me floored. "No Time to Die" is a fun, amazing, and emotional ending for Craig's Bond, and I plan on seeing this film many times. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-

Songstress Susan Werner Brings Americana, Country Tunes from Hit New Album to The Wortham Center, Oct. 27 With a well-earned reputation as a fixture on the folk scene, singersongwriter Susan Werner brings her insightful, thought-provoking lyrics, genre-blending rhythms and sassy wit to the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts for a live, in-person performance at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27. A live, online streaming option is also available for the performance. Dubbed by National Public Radio as the “empress of the unexpected,” Werner continues to confirm her reputation as an artist who is as changeable as the weather, with a familiar Midwestern charm as well as a sharp wit. At age five, Werner made her debut, playing guitar and singing at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa; she learned both piano and guitar by ear. After earning a degree in voice from the University of Iowa, she attended Temple University in Philadelphia, performing in numerous recitals and operas while completing her graduate studies. Ultimately, she opted to forgo a career as an opera singer, dedicating herself instead to songwriting, building a reputation at jazz clubs, coffeehouses, and folk festivals along the Eastern Seaboard. After launching her career with the self-released “Midwestern Saturday Night” in 1993, her second recording, “Live at Tin Angel,” impressed

executives at Private Music/ BMG, which released her critically acclaimed major label debut, “Last of the Good Straight Girls,” in 1995. She also received critical accolades for her subsequent recordings, “Time Between Trains” (1998) and “New Non-Fiction” (2001). She has toured the nation with acts such as Richard Thompson, Keb Mo, and Joan Armatrading, and was featured in a 1998 Peter, Paul, and Mary PBS special as one of the best of the next generation of folk songwriters. Now a celebrated performing songwriter, Werner has made a name for herself coast to coast, singing anything from her American folk classics to her Havana-inspired tunes. This touring season, Werner brings a fresh set of songs to the stage, including releases from her latest Americana and country-inspired album, “Flyover Country,” released in September. Werner has been praised by critics across the globe, from the Direct Current’s take of “This woman is great. Period.” to the Chicago Tribune’s “[Werner is] a songwriter and musician who is in such complete command of her gifts that it’s almost scary.” Werner brings with her a wealth of musical inspiration, producing a collection of music that feels both familiar and wholly original, a fusion of insightful lyrics and the rustic roots of American

folk, blues and country rhythms. I was out puttering around my garden the other day, mostly yelling obscenities at squirrels, when my non-existent wife, Sheila, came out to speak with me. I had promised our fake son, Lemuel, that if he was good in the first quarter of school, we would take him out and let him pick out a honey-baked ham for his pet crocodile Eustace. Sheila showed me his report card and I was as proud as anyone who had just told one of God’s creatures of the forest what they can go do with themselves could be.

Through the patio door, I walked up the stairs to our guest bedroom.

I went over to the side of the mattress and put my hands under the middle of it, on the left side. Again, I took a breath and began to lift the mattress, this time I was having more success. I found as I

lifted the mattress if I could slowly tug it towards me, I could get it to raise more, slowly, gently.
