FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! It’s Halloween week! I hope everyone enjoys themselves. Be careful with those kids out walking around and don’t forget to check that candy before they eat it. There are plenty of fun adult activities too. Check out the LoL Comedy Corner Club which is featured on our cover this week. Great place to eat, drink and laugh until your ribs hurt! If you are the lucky winner of the Morgan Wallen tickets you will join a huge crowd for that concert. I will be there so if you see me please say hello. Thank you for the ones who hung in there with a contest that lasted almost a month. After the concert you will be able to get in free at the new Sidetracks club in Bristol if you show your ticket. They are having a huge costume party with cash prizes. Whatever you may be doing this week I hope you are happy and healthy. I appreciate every single reader, client and follower on social media. You are the reason we are able to keep The Loafer on the stands.

Take Care and Be Kind!

Opens October 30 at Birthplace of Country Music Museum

Work and the workplace have gone through enormous changes between the mid-19th century, when 60 percent of Americans made their living as farmers, and the early 21st century. The Smithsonian traveling exhibition, The Way We Worked, celebrates the history of work in America. It tells stories of how hard-working Americans of every ethnicity, class, gender and age power the nation. The exhibition will be on display at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Historic Downtown Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia October 30, 2021 through January 23, 2022. In addition, the museum has created a supplementary display that focuses on the history of work from across the region, and it will be offering a variety of public programs during the exhibit’s time here. The museum is also partnering with the Bristol Public Library to highlight books about work for adults, teens, and children – these will be on display and available to check out from the library. The Way We Worked, an exhibition created by the National Archives, is adapted for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and made possible by the generous support of the Unites States Congress. “The work that each of us does every day speaks volumes about who we are as individuals, as communities, and as a country,” said Myriam Springuel, director of SITES and Smithsonian Affiliations. “We all have our own journeys, and each of these jobs reflects the various kinds of work that has and continues to build

and strengthen the nation.” The Way We Worked brings to light the who, what, where, why, and how of Americans at work. It explores the places Americans worked, from farms and factories and mines to restaurants, as well as in homes. It examines not only the effects of technology and automation, but also how workers striving for better working conditions, wages and hours, and an end to racial and gender discrimination changed America’s work history. The exhibition illustrates how

America’s workforce is as diverse as the nation itself. Dreams of new jobs and opportunities led millions to America’s shores. The Way We Worked provides some answers to why people work – from simply paying the bills to pursuing a calling, serving the country and giving back to the community. It explores what work tells people about each other.

Whole communities may become known by the work that happens there, like Idaho’s Silver Valley with its strong mining heritage. “It’s important that we offer a local perspective to traveling exhibitions whenever possible, and we’ve sourced a lot of compelling regional content,” said Dr. René Rodgers, Head Curator at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. “From manufacturing and agriculture to retail and the resource extraction of timber or coal, a number of industries in our region have played important roles in the development

of our communities here at home.” The photos featured in the traveling exhibition come from the vast collection of the National Archives, which is home to thousands of photos of work and workplaces taken by government agencies. The images featured in The Way We Worked, though possibly taken merely for purposes of record keeping, often reveal much more

about how social forces such as immigration, gender, ethnicity, class and technology transformed the workforce. Local companies that are featured in the museum’s supplemental display to The Way We Worked special exhibit include several still in operation, including Eastman, Strongwell, L. C. King Manufacturing Co., Mapes Strings, Bristol Herald Courier, and Helms Candy Company. Historical images and stories from a number of other businesses, public services, essential work, and media include Dixie Tannery, Hecht’s Bakery, the Virginia Café, H. P. King, Monroe Calculating Company, King Rogers Grocery, Sullins College, and WOPI. The Way We Worked is accompanied by a cell-phone tour that allows visitors to access additional details provided by exhibition curator Bruce Bustard, former senior curator for the National Archives. Special thanks are also due to the Massengill-DeFriece Foundation for their support of the exhibition at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. For more information about the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, visit BirthplaceOfCountryMusic.org. Public programming related to the exhibit will be listed on the BCM website’s Events page.

The Jeff Little Trio is an award-winning piano driven trio from the mountains of North Carolina. Jeff Little continues an often hidden tradition of piano playing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Halloween Recipes Are Great For Creating Ghoulish Halloween Food And Candy Treats By [https://EzineArticles.com/expert/ Daryl_Plaza/22984]Daryl Plaza Halloween is meant to be the most frightening and scary night of the year. The guests at your Halloween themed party are certainly going to want to see you using some Halloween recipes to create fantastic Halloween treats for the table. Of course, the more ominous looking, and shockingly scrumptious the Halloween food is at your Halloween themed party, the more fun it will be. You can find a lot of different Halloween recipes that will bring out the devil in you, and provide you with inspiration to create ghoulish Halloween treats from almost any type of food that you can imagine. Frighteningly Fun Halloween Recipes One of the most well known and enjoyable types of Halloween decorations is a Jack O’Lantern, carved from a pumpkin. Of course, once you have carved a handful of pumpkins into scary masterpieces that you can display around your home, you are left with a lot of pumpkin flesh - this means it is time to get cooking some pumpkin Halloween

treats. Some of the best Halloween recipes that are a great way to use this leftover pumpkin are for pies, soups, cookies and muffins. Apples are another popular Halloween food item, because they are in season then too. Toffee apples are wonderful Halloween treats, and bobbing for apples makes a great game at your Halloween themed party that all the kids will love. Cookies are always a favorite treat, and you can create some creepy cookies for your Halloween party. The type of cookie mixture doesn’t need to be anything fancy, the fun comes from using Halloween themed cookie cutters, such as bats, ghosts or Jack O’Lanterns, or just letting your imagination run wild and creating your own free hand designs. Food coloring adds a truly frightening finishing touch to the icing on these Halloween treats.

out to the miniature monsters and small spooks that turn up at your door, there are a lot of fun Halloween recipes that you can wrap up and give away as Halloween party favors, or rewards for not having any tricks played on you. For example, a great idea for treats for your Halloween themed party is to make popcorn ghosts. Just use your favorite popcorn ball recipe, and shape them into ghostly shapes. Add a Popsicle stick for a handle, and jellybeans for eyes, and you have the perfect Halloween treat. You can adapt all of your kids’ favorite foods into terrifying treats. There is no need to spend a lot of money on Halloween treats, and it can be easy to create some monstrous munchies with a little imagination. You can add your own hint of Halloween to almost anything to create devilish drinks and gruesome goodies.

But once we hit the bridge going into DC I saw the Washington monument and the Lincoln memorial and I was suddenly overcome with emotion. I felt chills run up my arms, I did forget how tedious the drive through Washington can be but we made the best of it and Eli was overjoyed and amazed at how tall Upon reading the book my imagination the Washington monument actually is in went wild. It’s an exciting book filled with action, suspense, and of course mystery. The book is sure to please anyone of the genre.

to the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Old-style. He temporarily moved to England for the family business in 1815 where he achieved fame with the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Serialized from 1819–20. He continued to publish regularly throughout his life, and he completed a fivevolume biography of George Washington just eight months before his death at age 76 in Tarrytown, New York.

Our nest was also in Richmond. It’s a cemetery that holds the remains of James Monroe. He has fast become one of my favorite presidents, of course good old TR still holds the number one spot. The cemetery is magnificent. It looks like something straight out of a gothic horror movie. Crypts that are enormous. Statues, monuments, and marble decorate the entire grounds. But alas we could not locate dear old Monroe. We walked until we nearly collapsed for at least an hour and a half. The grounds have more hills than a golf course. However there is always next year. My new mission is to locate his grave. The next day we rose early and headed

interested, so much so they exhumed his body and moved it to the church where it now rests. Funny story, when they pulled the wooden coffin from the ground it was said to have opened and poe came out freaking all in attendance. Sounds like Poe. From there also in Baltimore but in a part of town that did not look as though the avengers had just saved the world from an alien enemy. It could have been the spray painting on the side of one of the walls that read “No shoot zone” ; it did have a cute blue heart painted above it. The Poe house is small but that is to be expected for the time in which it was built. However it was worth admission to roam the rooms in which Poe moved about and even worth admission. One thing about our trip through Baltimore is I sure appreciate living here in Tennessee. The next day was our last and on the way home we stopped off at Jamestown, Eli was excited that he got to stop in the oldest town in America. This is where we were born as a nation. We walked where the settlers walked, the foundations to the old buildings are still there. The church house and even a cannon are still pretty much intact. We had a wonderful time there walking with the ghost of these poor people that suffered so long, some to the point of starving and being forced to eat horses, dogs, and even each other. All in all we had a wonderful time. I would recommend any of these places to anyone with a love of Poe or just history in general. Once we returned we felt as though we needed a vacation from our vacation.

As of this week my parents have finally pulled the trigger and listed their property for sale, the home they’ve had for 30 years. As much as I’ve been urging them to make this move for the last 2 ½ years, now that the time has finally come, I have some seriously conflicting emotions about it. While my logical adult brain knows beyond the shadow of doubt this is the right decision, losing a space that played such a big part in my human development will obviously hold a great deal of sentimental attachment. My earliest childhood memories begin in the backseat of my parents’ car while they searched all over the Tri-Cities for property that would get us out of the trailer park and be a better place to raise a family. Back in those days we didn’t have the internet to browse listings from the comfort of home. Mom and Dad would scour the weekly publications for homes or land and day after day we would pile in the car to check them out. I can remember what must have been one particularly frustrating day for my Mom around Halloween when I was 4. The place we lived was definitely not a desired location and I’m sure that, coupled with being a first-time parent alone all day while my dad worked overtime at the plant, was finally enough to push her over the edge. After another unsuccessful road trip checking out properties we came home and she burst into tears, slapping this stupid motion activated spooky bat decoration and shouted “I hate this place!” The bat’s eyes lit up and started to shake making ghostly “Oooooooo…” noises as she retreated to her bedroom to cry. As adults we laugh about this ironic

moment now, but as a little kid not understanding my normally upbeat and happy mother’s outburst, it left a lasting mark.

here I am 35 years old, living 5 hours away with no intention of returning and definitely not the time or funds to build during this economy.

I don’t remember how we finally landed where we did, but when Dad eventually found the guy who sold us the plot in Gap Creek, it was a godsend. He initially only sold off 1 acre, but soon after sold the rest, totaling about 2 ½ acres of forest and meadows nestled into the mountains of Long Hollow. My parents bought a bigger home and we settled in right around the holidays of my first grade year. For the first time, I had not only my own bathroom, but my own bedroom to boot! I loved having my own quiet space to fill with my collection of books and toys, and especially having all that land to play on. Coming from a tiny lot in a trailer park, 2 ½ acres seemed like miles of space. I quickly made friends with the few kids from the neighboring subdivision and we spent hours exploring our imaginations in the thick woods surrounding my home. During winter months, the steep hills that were cleared of trees made a perfect location to zip through the snow on flying discs, while doubling as prime real estate in the summer for rolling and tumbling with dogs and friends. I had a great, happy childhood filled with warm memories in a loving home and where we lived had a great deal to do with that.

This sell also makes me a little sad because of what it represents for my parents. Buying and paying off this land was a huge accomplishment for my parents. It was something they worked their butts off for and could never be taken away once it was paid off. For people with pretty humble material belongings, owning a sizable plot of land is a big deal, and a card to always be able to play. It’s really the only thing of value they can pass along to me, and so I hesitate to part with it, as it could be an incredible investment for me in the future.

by Kathie Scalf there while pursuing my own dreams here in Nashville. And while it’s true land is something of value to hold on to, this pain train ends with me since I’m not having children, so it would just end up being auctioned or sold by god knows who if I held onto it until I kick the bucket. There’s no need to selfishly hold onto something when it could benefit everyone right now.

So here’s to another one of life’s bittersweet milestones. It’s tough to lose the physical location of so many happy memories and to battle the “what could have been’s.” But I’m focusing on the here and now and the incredible opportunities we have to create new moments in the home Unfortunately in life you have to think I was able to set up for them in their with your head and not your heart. retirement years. And to remember While all these memories are great, “home” is the people and events that they’re just that and no longer have mold you into a whole person, not a bearing. The reality is my parents are piece of property. As long as you keep getting older and that much land is those inside you, you’ll never lose it. a lot of upkeep. Their home is now Here’s to the next chapter! 30 years old and needing repairs that will not add monetary value, as it’s a mobile home. The market is up wildly and they stand to make a tremendous profit, enabling them to pay off the balance on my home that has sat fully furnished for 2 years and still pocket a nice nest egg. The move to my house would be a better investment; a nicer, larger and safer home with close neighbors and easy access to main roads in the event they While we were happy where we ended needed help, especially during winter up, there is an aspect of unfulfilled months. With me not being around, dreams that bothers me during this I like to know there are people close sell. Mom and Dad always aspired to by, and being on a normal sized lot, build this “dream home,” a cabin at I can pay for lawn care weekly so the top of the woods with the view they can spend their evenings on of a lifetime. Life got in the way, the porch relaxing in the summers. decisions were made, and ultimately While I would like to think I could that dream never came to fruition. have used their land as an amazing I’ve always wanted the opportunity to personal investment, the truth is make that dream a reality and bring I know nothing about real estate to life the A-Frame log home I used to development, have no desire to learn sketch in my childhood journals. But and don’t have the time to devote up

a witch named Natacha (Krysten Ritter). Natacha explains to Alex she lures children into the apartment, but only keeps those alive who are useful to her. She discovers Alex writes scary stories, and demands he write scary stories everyday and read them to her at night in order to stay alive. She introduces Alex to Yazmin (Lidya Jewett), a child she had lured into the apartment earlier and has kept her as a housekeeper. Alex learns from Yazmin the magical apartment moves around the world and the only exits are the front and back doors, but those doors can only be opened by Natacha's magical keys. Yazmin also reveals Natacha's vast library, which is filled with scary stories of which the witch has heard all of the thousands of volumes. Alex knows he must write a scary story everyday, but has writer's block, and if that isn't enough, the two kids are being watched by Natacha's magical cat Lenore, which has the ability to disappear, and spies on the duo for the witch. While Alex continues to struggle to write scary stories for the witch, he goes through many of the books in the library, only to discover a child previously held hostage, which he calls the "Unicorn girl", managed to escape, and has written how in many of the books. As they devise a plan to escape, thanks to the clues left in the books, they eventually win over the nasty Lenore, of which Alex saves after a run in with a nasty creature in Natacha's special room containing a vast collection of plants used for potions. Via the books, the duo discover a potion which will put Natacha to sleep, giving them the opportunity to steal the magical keys in order to escape. The plan to escape works perfectly and the duo soon find themselves in the woods fleeing a black Unicorn, and while fleeing the mystical creature, find a cottage made entirely of candy. At this point in the story, much is revealed about the origins of Natacha, and who has been residing in the candy cottage. As a

result of his experience, Alex is able to overcome his disappointment with his best friend, and having made two new friends, Yazmin and Lenore, he is happy he was able to survive his scary encounter with the witch, and be home once more, and with encouragement from Yazmin, will continue his writing. The story obviously pays homage to "Hansel and Gretel", and does a wonderful job of doing so. The actors in this film are all great, and young actor

Fegley is amazing and talented and is never overshadowed by the flashy performance of Ritter as the "diva-witch" with her spectacular costumes. This is a fun film for the Halloween season, and can be enjoyed by the entire family. Make "Nightbooks" a new part of your spooky season viewing. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated TV-PG)

Happy Halloween! I am celebrating the spooky season this week by discussing the current film "Nightbooks", based on the 2018 horror-fantasy children's book of the same name. The film follows the story of Alex Mosher (Winslow Fegley), a young boy who resides in Brooklyn and has a love for scary stories and movies, and has a notebook filled with scary stories he has written. Alex is often made fun of at school for his love of all things horror, save for his best friend. When his best friend turns his back on him to hang with the popular kids (which is revealed in the latter part of the film), Alex swears he will never write another scary story, and trashes his room. He then grabs his notebook of "nightbooks" he and sneaks out of his apartment and heads to the basement to burn them in the furnace room. However, as he is in the elevator on the way to the basement, the elevator stops and opens to a floor he has never been on. He walks down the hallway and sees an open apartment door and sees the television inside playing the movie "The Lost Boys", one of his favorite films. He enters the apartment and soon the door shuts behind him, and then disappears. He has fallen under a spell which puts him to sleep and later awakens to discover he is in the magical apartment of

By the mid-1950s most of Universal’s classic monsters had been retired. The Mummy was trotted out for a team-up with Abbott and Costello in 1955, and the Creature From The Black Lagoon was soon to debut as the last of the studio’s famed monsters. At a zippy 81 minutes, the film doesn’t linger too long and has a fantastic pace. What’s most impressive are the effects and oversized sets that are built with great detail. In some ways, this is a movie that is served better by the practical effects that were their toolbox at the time, making this in the “do anything” CGI era would add a layer of disbelief to things. We buy into Carey’s ordeal easily. “The Incredible Shrinking Man” makes its blu-ray debut in a fantastic new edition from The Criterion Collection. Sourced from a new 4K
