Amythyst Kiah to Play UVA Wise

Amythyst Kiah’s debut album, Wary + Strange, marks the glorious collision of two vastly different worlds: the iconoclastic alt-rock that first sparked her musical passion, and the roots/old-time-music scene where she’s found breakout success in recent years, including recognition from Rolling Stone as “one of Americana’s great up-and-coming secrets.” Tapping into the musicality she further developed through her studies in East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass, Old Time, Country Music program, Kiah continues the uncompromising artistry she’s displayed as a member of Our Native Daughters—an allwomen-of-color supergroup. Kiah gained national attention in 2019 when “Black Myself” earned a Grammy nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song

of the Year at the Folk Alliance International Awards.

Covid-19, Pro-Art requests patrons to wear a mask for the duration of the performance.

Produced by Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, Amos Lee, Andrew Bird) and made with esteemed musicians like Blake Mills, Wary + Strange arrives as a deeply immersive body of work, endlessly redefining the limits of roots music in its inventive rhythms and textures. With an unforgettable voice that’s both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, Kiah gracefully interlaces political commentary and personal revelation, ultimately offering a raw yet nuanced examination of grief, alienation, and the hard-won triumph of total self-acceptance.

Pro-Art partners with a variety of venues, therefore individuals with mobility issues are encouraged to call or email the Pro-Art office to make arrangements for parking. For evolving conditions related to the global pandemic, inclement weather, or similar unforeseen circumstances, patrons are encouraged to visit proartva.org or call 276-376-4520 for up-to-date information.

ETSU to Celebrate a Return to Fall Homecoming for 2021 After the COVID-19 pandemic forced organizers to push the 2020-21 academic year Homecoming to spring 2021, East Tennessee State University students and alumni alike are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate Homecoming in the fall semester once again. “I think this Homecoming, coming back from a COVID spring Homecoming, is so exciting for everyone! Students are more eager to get involved and have a sense of normalcy since we have missed out on so many other opportunities,” said Sadie King, Student Government Association secretary of state. “I am so happy that everyone is going to get to come together and participate this fall, and I hope everyone has so much fun with all the events we have planned.”

Cave, Buctainment will be hosting “Silent Disco.” There, partygoers will be requested to present their ETSU I.D. to rent out required Bluetooth headphones. In accordance with university policy, masks will be required. Nov. 3 has an early start with “Homecoming Canned Food Creations,” which will be held outside of the William B. Greene Stadium from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The “Marsh Regional Blood Drive” event will return a second

(FMM) and the Collegiate Merchandising Association (CMA) will jointly offer a fashion show for all in attendance to raise awareness of fashion sustainability. The show will be held in the D.P. Culp Cave starting at 5:30 p.m. Afterwards, the ETSU community will have the opportunity to enjoy “Glow Night with Light Up Guy,” where attendees can expect to find a glow party featuring a live DJ performance and local campus icon Brendon Tiggs, better known on campus as Light Up Guy. The glow party will begin at 7:30 p.m. at University Commons.

Unlike the Homecoming event that took place last spring, this Homecoming will be graced with the traditional orange and yellow hues of Appalachian fall. Activities begin next week, and will take place from Nov. 1-7. Events kick off Monday, Nov. 1 with the “Marsh Regional Blood Drive,” in which Leadership and Civic Engagement, Volunteer ETSU and Marsh Regional Blood center will join forces to help save lives. Participants can expect to find the Blood Drive on the Pride Walk from 2-6 p.m. Halfway through the blood drive, attendees may find the “Bucky’s Big Top Carnival” event, where various student organizations will have booths set up that include activities and games set up based on this year’s Homecoming theme, “Bucky’s Big Top Carnival.” This event begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be located in the Quad. The conclusion to the first day’s Homecoming celebrations will be with “Bucky’s Big Top Pep Rally” at 6 p.m., on the Quad. On Nov. 2, the second day of Homecoming activities, participants may join ETSU Campus Recreation for a Homecoming “Cornhole Tournament” from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. at University Commons. Then, starting at 7 p.m. in the D.P. Culp

time from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., but will be located in the D.P. Culp Center third floor Ballroom. As a part of the blood drive event, a photobooth will be set up nearby and will operate from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The fourth day of Homecoming, Nov. 4, features a “Fashion Marketing & Merchandising Major & CMA Fashion Show” event, in which the Fashion Marketing and Merchandising program

Nov. 5 features the first day of “Bucky’s Big Top Carnival Ferris Wheel.” Starting at 2 p.m. on ETSU’s main campus in Parking Lot 21, students, faculty and staff alike will be invited to ride the 90foot tall Ferris Wheel. The ride will be operational until 10 p.m. Friday night, but will also be running Saturday. As an ETSU Homecoming tradition, “Homecoming Skit Night” will take place in the D.P. Culp Auditorium starting at 7 p.m. There, various student groups will be showcasing

their skills and performing skits based on this year’s Homecoming theme. In accordance with university policy, masks will be required. The Saturday celebration of Homecoming week, Nov. 6, winds up with the celebration of the legacy of Dr. Sally S. Lee. The “Dedication of the Dr. Sally S. Lee Suite for the Student Government Association at ETSU” event will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the D.P. Culp Center Room 249. There, alumni and current members of Fraternity and Sorority Organizations, Preview and Orientation Leaders Organization (POLO) and the Student Government Association (SGA) will host a dedication and naming of the SGA Suite, followed by a reception celebrating Lee in the D.P. Culp Center third floor Ballroom. Then, starting at 10:30 a.m. at ETSU Parking Lot 21, Buctainment will present local band Fritz & Co. live for their Homecoming tailgate event “Tailgate Band: Fritz & Co.” Shortly afterwards, beginning at 1 p.m. at William B. Greene Jr. Football Stadium, the ETSU community is strongly encouraged to support the ETSU Bucs Football team in their Homecoming game against Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Finally, Saturday night will end with “Affion Crockett Homecoming Stand-Up Comedy Show.” Starting at 8 p.m. in the D.P. Culp Center Auditorium 101, attendees will be treated to a Homecoming comedy show sponsored by the Black Affairs Association and the ETSU SGA. Featuring headliner Affion Crockett and special guest Brandon Lewis, the event is free to all. “Bucky’s Big Top Carnival” will conclude Sunday, Nov. 7 with the “ETSU Homecoming Gospel Concert.” The ETSU gospel choir invites all to join them in worship from 4-6 p.m. in D.P. Culp Center Auditorium 101. For the complete Homecoming schedule, visit etsu.edu/ homecoming/. Oil Change on Your Car: Objective Your engines oil lubricates all the moving parts of your car’s engine. This allows your engine to run at its maximum capacity and help extend the life of the engine. Over time, oil breaks down and loses viscosity. It can get thick and gummy which does not allow it to move as freely through the engine to keep all parts running effectively. The engine produces little shavings of metal and debris that can clog up the oil filter and enter the oil, these fragments then get passed through the engine and can cause malfunction of the engine. Keeping clean, fresh oil in your car along with a fresh oil filter is imperative to keep the engine running as it is designed to

As the nation continues to grapple with complex social and political issues, the ninth annual “FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social and Politically Engaged Art” is dedicated to the protection of voting rights. The exhibition is on display at East Tennessee State University’s Reece Museum through Dec. 10. The “FL3TCH3R Exhibit” was established in 2013 in memory of Fletcher H. Dyer. Fletcher, 22, was an ETSU Bachelor of Fine Arts senior concentrating in graphic design when he was lost too soon in a motorcycle accident in 2009. His parents, emeritus ETSU Department of Art and Design professor M. Wayne Dyer and attorney Barbara H. Dyer, and sister, graphic designer Carrie A. Dyer, serve as co-directors. The family said the exhibition appropriately honors Fletcher’s legacy. “The ‘FL3TCH3R Exhibit’ stands behind diverse communities and their voting rights,” they wrote. “We are concerned that all people do not have equal access to contribute their voice. Why not make voting more accessible to all?” This year’s exhibition presents the largest number of works in “FL3TCH3R” history, according to the museum. “While every year presents new

work by different artists, this year’s exhibition is unique, as it features the most work ever in a single ‘FL3TCH3R’ exhibition, with 109 artworks,” said Spenser Brenner, the museum’s exhibition coordinator. The exhibition, which contains a variety of art forms from paintings to sculpture, includes artists from Iran, Ireland, Poland, Turkey and 21 U.S. states. The exhibition is co-sponsored by the Mary B. Martin School of the Arts at ETSU. “The ‘FL3TCH3R Exhibit’ never fails to showcase the thoughts, ideas and issues on artists’ minds,” said Rebecca Proffitt, interim director of the museum. “This year is no different, and the passion of these artists is evident in the work.” Playing an important role in this year’s exhibition is Michael Ray Charles, an internationally acclaimed artist and professor at the University of Houston’s School of Art. Serving as the exhibition’s juror, Charles reviewed all entries, selecting the 109 works for the 2021 “FL3TCH3R Exhibit.” “The exhibition consists of a range of styles and incorporates traditional and non-traditional materials and disciplines,” said Charles. “This group of artists has developed striking combinations of realism and abstraction that produce thought-provoking visual sensations of everyday life in viewers’ minds.” The Dyer family was thrilled that Charles accepted their invitation. “Michael Ray Charles is a fierce artist,” said M. Wayne Dyer. “His work grapples with the most important issues of our time

where histories of our country collide with consequence. He illuminates the importance of diversity, perspective, social practice and forming important perspectives through his work.” Carrie A. Dyer, associate professor of graphic design at High Point University, added: “Fletcher believed in breaking down racist structures in our culture. We are honored that Michael Ray Charles is collaborating with us as this year’s juror. Fletcher would be so proud.” At 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4, at the museum, Charles will present a juror talk. An awards ceremony begins at 6 p.m., followed by a reception. The public is invited to the in-person event, and staff will provide a Zoom link on the museum website for anyone attending virtually. Masks will be required at the indoor event. “National and global social landscapes continue to be endless sources of inspiration for artists,” Charles said. “As you know, the moment any object begins to function as art, it can potentially change society for better or worse.”

Every year, the “FL3TCH3R Exhibit” draws interest from artists around the globe. “In the beginning, we envisioned the exhibit as a national show of visual arts,” said Barbara H. Dyer. “However, in the first year’s submissions, we received entries from Canada, so we called the exhibit a multinational exhibition. By the second year, we were getting submissions from multiple countries across the world and it became known as an international exhibit which continues today.” According to Brenner, the exhibition gives back to politically and socially engaged artists with $2,500 in awards. In addition, an ETSU Art and Design student receives the Fletcher H. Dyer Scholarship every year. For more information about Fletcher Dyer, visit fletcherdyer.com/about.html. For more information about the exhibition, visit: www.FL3TCH3Rexhibit.com. Call the museum, located at 363 Stout Drive, at 423-439-4392 or visit www.etsu.edu/reece for additional information. I was never interested in the “slasher” movies that in my opinion hit their respective marks in the late 1980s and have since become more of a parody than anything else. I never thought there was anything scary about someone

in a mask that never speaks chasing teenagers with a butcher's knife. However there is the exception of the nightmare on elm street movies. That to me was creepy, a man haunting dreams and killing people, but what made these different was the protagonist actually spoke and was funny. So the creepiness and the humor made for a rollercoaster of a movie. I tried watching the current Halloween movie, “Halloween Kills” But could not really get into it. It felt like something that had been done to death and it’s actually time to lay Michael to rest in my opinion. Those movies have had their day.

and see for yourself. Movies today throw everything at you right out of the shoot and by the end I lose interest in a lot of them. Take one of my favorite old horror movies and as a child it scared me to death. It came out in 1981 and I must have seen it around 85, since I was only six in 81. The movie is called "the Howling" and it stars some great old time actors. Dee Wallace who was a famous scream queen in her day, John Carradine the father of David Carradine, Patrick Macnee (one of my all-time favorites he starred in one of my favorite British TV shows, The avengers.) and many others. The movie is about werewolves, I know I know, but anyway the movie opens with what we suspect The movies I do like and I believe have is something creepy in a movie theater staying power. Movies with atmosphere. where a reporter (Dee Wallace) has The old black and white movies had dark decided to meet a source. We hear his heavy shadows. The seventy movies voice change, we see a silhouette but had the grainy film that just screamed we never really know what is in there. something bad was going to happen, And then it is killed. The movie never truly shows the wolves until near the watch Amityville Horror or the exorcist

end it just takes its time and builds and build and then they change and wow are they creepy if I am not mistake this was the first actual on screen change of a werewolves, the old way was stop motion where makeup was applied the cameras stopped and then more was applied the cameras rolled and so, but this one wow when I saw the dog like face stretch from underneath the human one it was freaky. I even have a small statue of one of the wolves on a shelf in my living room. The movie to this day is a favorite of mine. I highly recommend it. All of the sequel that follows is junk in comparison they reduced a wonderful scare into a low budget schlock fest. Well that is it Halloween is upon us and I hope everyone has fun and stays safe and all of us here at your local paper wish you a happy and safe Halloween!

theloaferonline.com | November 2, 2021

I first tossed around the idea of explaining what Halloween is and how it came to be. However, that has been done to death. I know it started it as most holidays do as a pagan holiday filled with scary images all of which have some sort of mischievous underlying meaning. But I will not get into all of that. I am a Christian and I see why some would not want to celebrate or participate in it but for some it has been in our heritage so long that the only meaning is to go out with the kiddies and have fun and get a little bit of candy. However for me it was about all of the movies, the great movies, the old horror movies. Movies that one has to search for every other month except for Halloween when they show up everywhere. I was speaking with my friend Donna the other day. We were talking about the great old Actors that appeared in some of the best horror movies we will ever know and honestly everything till now has been done so there are very few original ideas. For instance every movie that has Dracula in the title goes back to 1931 the early days of the “Talkies” With Bela Lugosi and his ominous stare and sinister smile. Many have played the part but he will always be Dracula to me.

It’s Here!

With love and money being not only the top 2 reasons for murder, but also my personal “trouble areas,” I decided this week to educate myself on at least the financial aspect and it turns out you can apply many of the same lessons to both. One of the top results from my online search was Warren Buffett’s Top 10 Pieces of Investment Advice. He seems like a guy who might know a bit more about love and money than myself, considering he’s worth $105.2 billion dollars and has been married since 1952, so I made that my point of reference, and wouldn’t you know those tips and tricks were pretty sound whether it came to my money or my heart. Only listen to those you know and trust. The number of people you take advice from should be extremely small and start with the most important person- you. Trust your gut first, then get a second opinion from someone with knowledge and an unbiased interest in your wellbeing. There are very few people who want to see you succeed. Play it close to the chest and trust only those who have proven they’re worthy. I wondered for a while if love was even real, but I’ve come to the conclusion it definitely is-sometimes it’s just not a smart investment. When you sink your emotions into a poor relationship venture you’re going to risk losing capital, same as making a bad business decision. Proceed with equal caution in both scenarios. Always lead with your head and not your heart, keeping in mind higher risk doesn’t always equal higher reward. Falling in love is one of the greatest feelings in the world, but don’t allow yourself to fall all the way to rock bottom.

Farm and Fun Time 75th Anniversary Special Nov. 11 Radio Bristol’s Live Variety Show at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum

WBCM Radio Bristol’s Farm and Fun Time live variety show, presented by the Birthplace of Country Music, celebrates 75 years with a special edition of the program on Thursday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Farm and Fun Time first aired on WCYB radio back in November of 1946 from the former General Shelby Hotel in Downtown Bristol. WCYB was considered a hot spot for the contemporary hillbilly sound that would later become known as bluegrass. Farm and Fun Time helped launch the careers of bluegrass artists like The Stanley Brothers, Jim & Jesse McReynolds, Mac Wiseman, and Curly King & The Tennessee Hilltoppers. It was also an important outlet for Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, who moved to Bristol for a time after leaving Bill Monroe’s band. “This month’s show will not only stand out with the usual array of diverse talent, but is also significant to Farm and Fun Time history,” said WBCM Radio Bristol producer and program host Kris Truelsen. “The original Farm and Fun Time began airing on WCYB radio in Downtown Bristol 75 years ago this month. We have some special things planned to help commemorate the 75th anniversary of Farm and Fun Time and we hope everyone will join us!”

Based in Johnson City, Tennessee, Bill and the Belles is known for combining a stringband format with their signature harmonies, candid songwriting, and pop sensibilities. Composed of Truelsen on guitar, fiddler Kalia Yeagle, banjo/banjo-uke player Aidan Van Suetendael, and bassist Andrew Small, the group has a knack for saying sad things with a bit of an ironic smirk and revels in the in-between. Deeply engaged with the stringband tradition and eager to stretch those influences to a contemporary setting, the band’s latest album Happy Again is full of life, humor, and tongue-in-cheek explorations of love and loss.

The new DC animated film "Injustice" is sure to stir up some controversy for fans of Superman who know nothing about the comic book series or video games the movie is based on. The film is set in an alternative reality, and features the story of how Superman (voiced by Justin Hartley) becomes a harsh dictator after he experiences the ultimate tragedy in his life. If you aren't familiar with the story of the video game or comic book storyline, there will be a few spoilers in this review so be forewarned. The plot involves the Joker and Harley Quinn kidnapping Lois Lane, which ultimately results in her death and the destruction of Superman's home city Metropolis. The death of Lois sends Superman into such a rage he locates the Joker and kills him in front of Batman, who was questioning the Clown Prince of Crime. The actions of Superman lead to a rift between Superman and Batman (Anson Mount), as Superman has decided all war and violence on Earth must be stopped and he will do whatever it takes to make sure the leaders of Earth follow his direction.

Pop Life

Superman's actions lead to a divide in the Justice League, with some members refusing to help his efforts and others, most notably Wonder Woman (Janet Varney), siding with the Man of Steel. The division between the two friends also leads to trouble within the Batman family, as Robin (Damien Wayne, son of Batman) betrays his father and sides with Superman. The Bat family split is further intensified when Superman invades Arkham Asylum in order to send all the villains housed there to a more secure location, but is met with resistance by Batman and Nightwing. Robin is with Superman and his crew, and the temperamental Boy Wonder accidentally kills NIghtwing in a fit of rage. This results in Batman later totally breaking down in the Batcave where he is comforted by Catwoman. However, the death of Nightwing proves to be a pivotal moment in more ways than one, as the character plays a major role in the conflict. The battle lines have been drawn, and the opposing sides fight until the very end of the film, while Superman sinks further into madness in his determination to save the world. There are many shocking moments in the film, most of which involve the deaths of major heroes, and Superman disposing of those who oppose him. The film, while borrowing heavily from the comic book series, changes a lot of the storyline and many of the characters in the film are used differently. For example, the character of Hawkgirl is a major character in the comics, but is replaced here by Hawkman. Other missing characters which appeared in the comics include Batwoman, Rene Montoya, Dr. Fate, Swamp Thing, and The

conveying how quickly a beloved hero can turn from light to dark due to a tragedy without the proper guidance and support. Plus a film that features a mega fight between Supermen from two Earths is worth the watch alone. "Injustice" manages to take a massive storyline and condense it into yet another entertaining film from the DC Animated Universe. Now playing on video-on-demand and Blu-ray and DVD.

Spectre among others. The character of Shazam also played a larger role in the comics, and only appears briefly in the film. However, this storyline is so large in scope, it would have taken a mini-series to follow the comic book storyline more closely. I will say director Matt Peters and writer Ernie Altbacker did a wonderful job in condensing this massive story into an entertaining 78 minute film. While I would have prefered at least a 2 hour film, the result is still enjoyable. The movie does an excellent job of

King Commons Honored by Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association The Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA) awarded the City of Johnson City with a Four Star Award at the association’s 2021 annual conference held in Clarksville, Tenn., Oct. 18-20. The City was recognized in the category of Renovated Facility for King Commons. King Commons is the City’s second stormwater system project designed to alleviate downtown flooding while serving as useful greenspaces that draw people to the central business district. The project included the daylighting of 800 feet of an encapsulated culvert at the convergence of King and Brush creeks. The 3-acre site has since been developed into greenspace featuring public art, an amphitheater, a Natural Adventure Area playground, Johnson City’s landmark sign, and a monument featuring significant events in the City’s first 150 years. “King Commons has become a focal point of the community,” said Parks and Recreation Director James Ellis.

“This area was underutilized and inhibited by flooding. The conversion of the property to its current design and use has helped to transform downtown and created a beautiful, multiuse outdoor space that draws people to the area.” King Commons offers a park setting in the heart of downtown, where a growing number of people prefer to spend leisure time and host events. It complements the overall park system by providing a play area specifically targeted for older children. The natural elements are unique and speak to the outdoor recreation offerings of the area. With the Johnson City Public Library overlooking the park, there is a great deal of collaboration on educational programming. The library sponsors a storybook walk throughout the playground and utilizes King Commons for large events and programs. It is a game-changing facility that is not only a success in its own right but has spurred success for numerous businesses in the vicinity.

Sometimes it’s tasking being known as the number one outdoors expert in the Tri-Cities. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for it. Lord knows I never would have thought my book “Hiking the Trails of Erwin” would become a number one bestseller on the Bristol Herald booklist. The follow-up, “Campings spots of Elizabethton” did just as well. It seemed that virtually overnight I became a known person for all the advice when it comes to enjoying the outdoors in our beautiful region. But when I’m doing my daily errands it can get in the way at times. I’m always glad to answer questions, but when I’m doing my best to get in and out of the “embarrassing personal hygiene” aisle at the Wal-drug, it can be a bit much to have a line form with everyone asking me which weatherproofing wax I like. One time I made the mistake of going to Mahoney’s, the popular outdoors store in Johnson City. You would have thought it was The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I was there for three hours, shaking hands, taking pictures, and signing

packets of Beef Jerky. If I smell cured meats I still get a bit faint now. It was overwhelming, but the next day my agent called to tell me how many copies of my book had sold because of it. “You can finally buy that banjo-shaped pool, kid,” Sid told me. That’s one plus that my fame as an outdoorsman has brought me. Vanity projects! At long last, my dream of a bluegrass career much like Steve Martin’s was in my reach. Could I play the banjo? Not at all! But I learned enough to fake it till I make it. Thanks to the modern inventions of computer recording I could make myself sound much better than I actually am. I still think my idea to record an all-mountain music-inspired tribute to TV game show themes was inspired. It didn't sell though, so I followed that up with a more traditional record of country standards, “Hollarin’ in the Holler.”

That record was a hit, so much so that my publishers got jealous and now I had to come up with some book tie-in for them to go along with my newfound musical career. We settled on a book about the making of the album, along with lyrics and whatnot. We called it “The Andy Ross Songbook.” What’s odd is that it didn’t sell too well domesticity, but the Australians ate it up. I’m going on tour there as soon as it’s safe. Yes, the fame I’ve found as our region’s foremost frontiersman has taken me to some unusual places. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. I always try to be in a good mood in public too, as you never know. Recently at the UT football game, some people noticed me and began to ask me for advice. I said, “Please read my book, I’m just here to watch the ball be tossed around.” This didn’t go over well. It began

with grumbling, which then became angry chatter, which then turned into trash being thrown at me. I tried to settle the crowd by giving them a coupon for a camping tent, but it was too late. Then came the golf balls. Where the heck did they get the golf balls from? You can imagine my embarrassment that this spilled out onto the playfield as the crowd also began to attack one of the coaches with garbage and golf. UT got fined for the incident, and so far they’ve not asked me to pay any part of the $250,000. That could change I suppose, but I’m going to make a donation to their “Let’s find new shades of Orange” fund. Yes, being known for all I’m known for makes for an interesting life, challenging at times, but also you learn new things. For example, did you know it’s hard to get mustard stains out of orange clothing? See you next week.
