NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! Can you believe it is already November? I am in shock to be honest! The weather is feeling more like December and I will be glad to see time change so it’s not dark when I drive the kids to school. This morning my 14-year-old asked me why school has to be so early. I really didn’t have a good reason. I would be ok with a 9am start time. Last weekend I had the privilege of covering the Country Thunder Concert in Bristol. It was an amazing show! Be sure to check out the coverage inside this week’s issue. Congrats to Ashley Jones our winner in the Morgan Wallen ticket contest. She did let us know that she and her husband Jacob had a great time. In my opinion we should always recognize veterans and active duty military but November is a time to make sure we make that public. This month you will find that in our issues. There is still time to send us your loved one. We just need a picture, full name, branch and if they are active, veteran or have passed away. Thank you to every single person who has served or supported a loved one so they could serve this great country. November is also the time to be thankful. I am thankful for my God, my country, my family and every single reader, advertiser and employee here at The Loafer. Thank you for your support!

Be Thankful!

Georgia native country music singer Jon Langston with his huge hit “Forever Girl” that had the whole audience singing and swaying to the music. Although it was obvious the crowd came out in the nasty weather to wait for the man of the hour, Morgan Wallen but the ones who had shown up early for a good spot seemed pleased they were able to see these upcoming stars in the country music world. These soaked and cold fans

Saturday, October 30th was a rainy (the kind that is so cold it soaks into your bones) and cold day but that didn’t stop the country music fans from pouring into the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway for the chance to see and hear their favorite singers. Ernest came on stage first and he was very entertaining. He has a huge personality and we found out later that he is best friends with Morgan Wallen and wrote his first Country Airplay No 1 “More Than My Hometown.” Larry Fleet came on stage next with his impressive beard and he gave me chills with his song “Where I Find God” and the crowd loved it! Next up was

their feet cheering, hands in the air, singing every word and loving every minute. It seems as if everyone forgot they were wet, cold and tired. Morgan expressed his delight at being close to his hometown and the crowd made sure to let him know that they felt the same. He continued to sing every single hit song and some new ones until the night ended with fireworks.

cheered as Granger Smith took the stage with his guitar and his huge southern boy smile lit up the night. Fans sang along for his entire collection of hits and a heartfelt acoustic version of “Amazing Grace” seemed to humble everyone in the crowd. The rain kept coming down but that wasn’t the only reason for wet faces. After hours in the rain and loving every minute of these artists the man himself finally showed his face behind a piano singing “Sand in My Boots.” What a way to start his show! The fans absolutely went wild with delight. For the rest of the evening everyone was on

All in all, a good time was had by every fan! Thank you Country Thunder and we will see you next year for 2 full days of fun!

UVA Wise Presents A Streetcar Named Desire as a Part of Pro-Art’s 45th Season The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Theater Department is at work on its fall production of the American stage classic A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. The production opens November 10 in the Gilliam Center for the Arts Black Box Theater on the UVA Wise campus. Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play holds a lens to institutional restrictions placed on women’s lives in postwar America and director Michael McNulty has worked tirelessly with the cast to bring the drama to life, believing that the play’s message endures nearly 75 years after its debut. In this production, Blanche du Bois (played by Kara Dotten) relocates to the New Orleans home of her younger sister and brother-in-law, Stella (Ashlyn Mullins), and Stanley Kowalski (Luke Sage), after losing her Mississippi home to creditors. Undermined by romantic illusions, Blanche is unable to cope with life’s harsh realities. Though she finds a glimmer of hope while connecting with Stanley’s gentlemanly

friend, Mitch (Blane Sage), Blanche cannot face the truth of her own troubled past and ultimately loses her grip on reality. Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) transformed American theater by breaking away from the conventional using his psychological insight and bold honesty. Other works by Williams include The Glass Menagerie, Vieux Carre, Sweet Bird of Youth, Orpheus Descending, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. A Streetcar Named Desire, first directed by Elia Kazan, premiered at the Barrymore Theatre on Broadway in December 1947.

Cool weather is finally here, and as the last of the leaves drop to the ground there’s no better way to embrace the season than with cozy comfort grub. If you’re anything like me, the days are already too short and with the sun setting earlier than ever I’m really pressed for time to get everything completed; the last thing I have time to do is slave over a stove. I’ve found that quick and easy one-dish comfort meals are the winning ticket for long cold nights. I’ve compiled a couple of recipes that have really hit the spot for me as of late and encourage you to add your own flair!

¼ C sour cream Shredded cheese, diced bacon, sour cream, chives garnish (optional) Directions:

Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add oil. Once oil is hot, add onions and carrots, stirring and cooking about 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add garlic cloves and sautee for about 1 minute until fragrant, then toss in potatoes and season with garlic salt and pepper. Cover vegetables with approximately 2/3 carton of broth, bring heat to high until soup begins to boil, reduce heat, add rosemary, cover and No cold weather menu would be simmer until potatoes are fork tender, complete without a soup so that’s approximately 10 minutes. Top by spreading dressing over entirety of dish, then bake for 30-40 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and no longer pink.

Caramel Apple Mimosas

Finally to satisfy your sweet tooth without requiring an insulin shot or an hour on the treadmill, you can throw together a low calorie cobbler with just a few ingredients. It’s so yummy you won’t even know it’s not full of butter like the real thing.

Rim a champagne flute or wine glass by dipping in caramel sauce then rolling in brown sugar. Fill glass almost to top with bubbles, leaving about an inch to the rim. Top with apple cider, then garnish to taste with a few fresh or frozen cranberries and a cinnamon stick.

If you are like me you have been waiting for a big sci-fi flick to be released. The wait is finally over with the release of "Dune", based on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert. The first big screen effort was released in 1984 and was directed by David Lynch. The film was a box office disappointment and received less-than-favorable reviews, and made many "worst films of the year" lists. Flash forward to 2000, as the SyFy Channel broadcast the better received "Frank Herbert's Dune", a three-part miniseries. This production was wonderful and I became an immediate fan of this version. The miniseries was such a hit it garnered two Emmy Awards and was one of the highest rated programs ever to run on the SyFy Channel. For whatever reason the 1984 flop attracts more attention than the far superior miniseries. There was even a 2003 sequel "Frank Herbert's Children of Dune", which was successful as well. In 2021 we have a new big screen version of "Dune", this effort directed by Denis Villeneuve ("Enemy'), and starring Timothee Chalamet ("Call Me by Your Name") as hero Paul Atreides.

Pop Life

By Ken Silvers ksilvers@ theloaferonline.com

The story is set in the year 10191(!), and has various planets striving to control a precious source called spice, a drug that gives users a longer life span, greater vitality, and heightened awareness. The spice can also aid in safe and accurate interstellar travel. The spice is also highly addictive, and withdrawal is fatal. Harvesting of the spice is also dangerous as the desired commodity is only found on the desert planet of Arrakis, where it's guarded by giant sandworms, as the giant creatures produce the spice. So, you can just imagine how valued the spice is for the various planets. The aforementioned Paul Atreides lives with his family, ruled by Duke Leto of House Atreides (Oscar Isaac) on the ocean planet Caladan, and is living an idyllic life until his family is called upon by the Emperor (ruler of the planets) to replace House Harkonnen (the bad guys of the film) to rule over planet Arrakis. As you might imagine, this does not bode well with House Harkonnen, led by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skaragard), who plans a coup to retake the home of the spice with the help of the Emperor's troops, after he convinces the Emperor House Atreides is a threat to his rule. With the coup pending, Duke Leto begins to see the native population of Arrakis, the Fremen, as potential allies. While a major battle is about to take place, we learn Paul has advanced physical and mental abilities thanks to inheriting these special abilities from his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), who is member of the Bene Gesserit, a group of women whose members train their bodies and minds through years of physical and mental conditioning

film is also entitled "Dune Part 1", so the film ends with fans eagerly awaiting part 2, set to be released in 2023. "Dune" is the big screen effort we have deserved since the novel first hit the shelves, and is a box office success. I also recommend checking out the 2000 miniseries for an even more expanded story. Now playing in theaters and for a limited time on HBO Max. (Rated PG-13)

to obtain superhuman powers. Thus, it comes as a shock a male is developing said abilities. I could go on and on about the storyline, but suffice to say the plot involves battles, sandworm attacks, betrayals, kidnapping, surprise alliances, and a sad and shocking death. The actors in the film are all wonderful, led by the never disappointing Chalamet. The film is epic in scope with stunning visuals, and even though I saw the film on HBO Max, I recommend seeing this film at theaters if you feel comfortable doing so. This

Last month, your favorite major studio boutique and mine, Warner Archive, released a large number of fantastic goodies on blu-ray for the first time. All of these October titles were, appropriately, seasonally themed to come out just before Halloween. Six movies in total, on five new blu-ray discs, one of which is a double feature. Because there are so many titles to look at, I’m going to split my coverage of these new titles up by talking about the six films over the next two columns. In the wake of Universal’s—pardon the pun—monster successes with 1931’s “Dracula” and “Frankenstein” other studios decided they wanted a slice of the spooky pie. MGM, the prestige studio, was trepidatious of getting into the Horror genre.
