NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Friends!

We can’t let October get past us without talking about Breast Cancer Awareness Month! We all need to remember to get checked at least once a year and October is the perfect time to do that. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer and this is absolutely horrifying to think about. We need to do all we can to help support research and to encourage everyone to have their checkups every year. I hope everyone has a great week. Wear pink and schedule a mammogram!

Elizabeth Laprelle and The Family Band to Kick Off 52nd Home Craft Days The 52nd Home Craft Days festival kicks off with the annual Opening Night Concert at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 20th in the Goodloe Center at Mountain Empire Community College in partnership with Pro-Art. It’ll be an evening steeped in tradition with performances from Elizabeth LaPrelle and the Family Band, Martha Spencer and the Wonderland Band, and annual favorites Tommy Bledsoe, Rich Kirby, Todd Meade, and Tyler Hughes! This event is free and open to the public, everyone is welcome to attend. Elizabeth LaPrelle and the Family Band have been performing and recording music together for over 20 years, sharing the music they love to make in their living rooms and kitchens. It’s a real family affair consisting of Elizabeth herself as the frontwoman, sharing the stage with her mother, Sandy LaPrelle, uncle and aunt Jon Newlin and Amy Davis, and most recently her husband, Brian Dolphin. They let their eclectic tastes be their guide through a repertoire of ancient mountain ballads, old-time tunes, novelty songs, and gospel harmonies. Elizabeth LaPrelle is exceptional in her devotion to and mastery of the ancient and deep art of Appalachian unaccompanied singing. She performs with a sense of conviction, honesty, and emotional force that evokes the great Appalachian ballad-singers of generations past. She has developed her repertoire from neighbors like Jim Lloyd, under the tutelage of powerful female ballad singers Ginny Hawker and Sheila Kay Adams, and from a wealth of field recordings of legendary singers from the mountains. Martha Spencer is a singer-songwriter, mountain musician and dancer from the Blue Ridge

Mountains of Virginia. She grew up in the musical Spencer family and learned to play several instruments (guitar, fiddle, banjo, bass, dulcimer, mandolin) and flatfoot/clog at a young age. She performs and has recorded with various groups and has been involved with several roots music projects. She has played shows, festivals and led workshops across the US, Australia, UK, Canada, and Europe. Tommy Bledsoe, Rich Kirby, Todd Meade, and Tyler Hughes will open Friday night’s concert. Tommy Bledsoe and Rich Kirby have extensive roots in Southwest Virginia’s old-time music. The two have been instrumental in organizing music for Home Craft Days for over 40 years. Combined, the four represent over fifty years’ experience with the region’s music and its tradition bearers like Janette Carter, Uncle Charlie Osborne, and Ralph Stanley. The 52nd Home Craft Days celebration will be held October 20-22 on the campus of Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Saturday and Sunday will feature performances every hour on two stages. Enjoy the food, fun, and friendship of Southwest Virginia and come home to the Home Craft Days festival. Find more information and the schedule of events at homecraftdays.org. Pro-Art partners with a variety of venues, therefore individuals with mobility issues or general questions are encouraged to call (276) 376-4520 or email the Pro-Art office at: pro-art@uvawise.edu. Tennessee Folklore Society Annual Meeting in Etowah, Tennessee The Tennessee Folklore Society (TFS) annual meeting on Saturday, November 4 will feature traditional musicians Joseph Decosimo and Greg Brooks. The meeting, supported by funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission (TAC), will be held at The Gem Theater in Etowah. Members of Tellico Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) will play in the lobby during registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. The membership meeting follows at 10:00. The public is invited to attend any or all activities on the schedule. Fiddler Greg Brooks’ presentation, which begins at 1:15 p.m. is titled “Allen Sisson: Copper Basin Fiddler,” and focuses on the first fiddler with Tennessee connections to make commercial recordings. Although Sisson lived in Fanin County, Georgia, he worked as a section hand railroad foreman for DSC&I mines across the state line in Copperhill. After gaining fame as the Champion Fiddler of Tennessee in 1921, Sisson recorded

for the Edison Label in 1925. In recent years, Greg Brooks of Mineral Bluff, Georgia, has mastered Sisson’s unique tunes, as well as those of Tommy Magness. An active bluegrass fiddler, Brooks is keeping both historic hometown repertoires alive. Joseph Decosimo will present “Rare and Beautiful Fiddle and Banjo Repertoire from East Tennessee” at 2:45 p.m. Many fine fiddlers and banjo players have called East Tennessee home through the years. Performer, researcher, and native East Tennessean Joseph Decosimo will share rare and beautiful pieces from the region’s banjo and fiddler traditions, some dating to the 19th century. For the last 25 years, Decosimo has researched and interpreted the region’s older tunes, befriending older musicians while studying field and commercial recordings. A blue-ribbon winning fiddler and banjo player, he has shared the region’s music at festivals

around the world and holds a doctorate in American Studies. Other presenters at the TFS annual meeting include TAC Director of Folklife Bradley Hanson and TAC Traditional Arts Specialist Evangeline Mee at 10:45 a.m., followed by Caroline Mitchell Carrico at 11:15. Mitchell will present an audio story titled “Bocce & the Memphis Italian Festival.” Bocce is a traditional Italian game which is a core part of the Memphis Italian Festival. Mitchell’s project was created as part of the Tennessee Folklife Institute, a program of TAC in partnership with Humanities Tennessee. At 2 p.m., Dr. Mark Jackson of Middle Tennessee State University will present “Poke Sallet: A Delicious and Dangerous Foodways.” Visit www.tennesseefolklore.org for details.

The November 4 annual meeting of the Tennessee Folklore Society in Etowah will include a presentation of East Tennessee banjo and fiddle traditions by Joseph Decosimo.

Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with – a street parade to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.

FACTS ABOUT LABOR DAY: 1. The idea first became public in 1882. 2. The New York parade inspired other unions.

3. Grover Cleveland helped make Labor Day a national holiday. 4. Labor Day is the unofficial end of Hot Dog season. 5. THE BIG QUESTION> Can you wear white after Labor Day? This old tradition goes back to the late Victorian era, where it was a fashion faux pas to wear any white clothing after the summer officially ended on Labor Day. The tradition isn’t really followed anymore. Emily Post explained the logic behind the fashion trend – white indicated you were still in vacation mode at your summer cottage.

“I think that these cold temperatures are going to really start to speed things up,” said Travis Watson, the campus arborist at East Tennessee State University. “I would look for this weekend through October 22 to be the best times to travel to higher elevations.”

Weather conditions in recent weeks generated near perfect conditions for the annual parade of red, yellow and orange leaves.

Recent high winds did bring down some leaves throughout the Appalachian Highlands, though that mostly happened with poplar and “less showy hardwoods,” Watson said.

I got back into therapy this year and have found a counselor who I really respect and get a lot from. Through this journey with her, I’ve been working mostly on self-improvement and trying to let go of things that don’t serve me well. One of those exercises has been identifying patterns so I can stop destructive behavior, and during that exercise I realized what is probably my worst quality – my knee jerk reaction trigger. They say you cannot fix something if you don’t first acknowledge you have a problem, so here we go: My name is Kathie Scalf and I have a problem with immediately giving a reaction to everything. I’m also proud to say I’ve made a lot of strides in this department and have found what I’m calling, “the grace in the space.” It’s difficult for me not to immediately respond to a stimuli. This quality is wonderful for my work ethic; I immediately respond to emails, texts, and always answer or return phone calls, which is practically unheard of in the alcohol industry. However, that same anxiety I get from not addressing an email right away, even on the weekend, is the same feeling that overwhelms me when I get triggered by something hurtful… but on steroids. If I see something, or hear something that makes me uneasy, I want to confront it right away, and I’ve learned the hard way 9 times out of 10, that does not end well. I’m a big advocate for confrontation; when its executed correctly it can make you a highly efficient and accountable human. But its sometimes hard for me to remember that most people’s brains don’t operate in the same way as mine, and they perceive any type of confrontation as being aggression. I

also have a bad habit when I’m very all it was going to do was drag me hurt by someone I care about, to want back into a situation I have worked to immediately fire off a response to so hard to get out of. And it turns out what’s triggered me with the same, if I didn’t have to – I heard through the not an elevated energy, and one grapevine the whole situation was thing that never helps a fire is adding revealed on its own. Funny how that an accelerant. works out. People respond to energy, and if I’ve also found a lot of clarity about you want to improve a situation you who I am and the person I want to need to emit the energy you want to be by taking the space to remove receive. If someone hurts me and I myself from a trigger and really ask respond by yelling, saying something myself what it is that’s bothering me hurtful, or becoming frantic, that is about the situation. For example, what they’re going to return back, I recently saw a group picture of which is only going to make me some former friends of mine. These more anxious and upset. Instead, were very close friendships I held I’m learning not everything needs an for many years that have one by one immediate response; in fact, if I step ended without any closure, and one away and take a beat to calm down, of which is a wound that’s still pretty most of the time the things that raw. When I saw this photo it ran are upsetting me don’t require any all over me; for one thing, I was the response at all! person who even brought the group I have found so much grace and peace together initially, so I have no doubt in the space I put between myself and I was a topic of conversation. That immediately puts me in a mental a triggering situation. Sometimes it’s just a matter of putting down my disposition to defend myself. It also phone and taking a walk, sometimes was upsetting because I’ve never it takes a few days, but I have found gotten a reason why these people if I just give myself some time and no longer wanted to be my friend; space to sit with a situation, the eventually one day over the years trigger loses it’s effectiveness and I since I moved, our relationships came avoid wasting my valuable time and to a stop. And being so close to these energy on something that I could people, it also was triggering because have just walked away from. And I know the things they’ve all said one neat thing I’ve discovered is that about each other, and yet there they what’s done in the dark always comes sat thick as thieves while I’m the bad to light, and karma doesn’t need my guy – at least that’s what my brain help hurrying things along. was telling me. However, instead of blasting out a group message Several months ago I found out finally asking what their problem is, something about the person who or posting a vague Instagram story, hurt me most that would have been very destructive to their life if I made I sat back, took a breath and asked myself why was this really bothering it known. I immediately wanted to me? Truth be told, I’ve not noticed broadcast it, to tell on them to their loved ones, as if it would vindicate me their absence in my life at all; why in the wrongs they committed against would it bother me that I’m absent from that photo? These people are me so long ago. After days of being virtually strangers to me now; we’ve talked down from the ledge by my mother, I ultimately decided not to do all changed, or maybe just I have changed and that’s ok. If I met them it. I was given the gift of being able right now, we would have nothing in to release myself from this person years ago, and while this revelation common and would never be friends; might have felt good in the moment, our lifestyles are completely different

and incompatible. They don’t want the life I have and I don’t want theirs. Our goals and ambitions no longer align and for that reason alone, its ok to let it go in peace. That moment of breathwork and walking was a major opportunity instead of opening a can of bad energy to get clearer on my personal values and ambitions. Be a confrontational person; confront your own demons and don’t be afraid to confront an issue head on. Just don’t be a reactionary person! It’s very possible – and productive – to confront a situation from a level head after working it through in your own mind first. Take the time to ask yourself if your interference is even necessary and will this add value to your life or subtract from it? Does this even affect you? Normally by the time you get done answering all these questions, you won’t care as much about the initial hurt. There’s a lot of grace in the space between a trigger and a reaction, and the more space you put between it, the more grace you’ll find.

XO - Kathie

Death Comes to Sabine Hill Candlelight Tours Featuring Early American Death & Mourning Customs On October 20th and 21st Sabine Hill State Historic Site in Elizabethton, TN will present “Death Comes to Sabine Hill”, a unique event designed to resurrect many of the forgotten traditions associated with death and mourning in early Am erica. Visitors will experience these mysterious customs firsthand through special after-hours tours of the historic Taylor House. Two centuries ago, our ancestors perceived death and mourning quite differently than we do. Today, we push through the funeral process as quickly as possible. Those who came before us, however, took a much more intimate approach. Disease, war, infant mortality, and other causes meant that death was a persistent companion especially before the days of modern medical advancement. Prior to the advent of funeral homes,

the process of preparing a deceased family member for burial was carried out at home, and all manner of traditions, superstitions, and ceremonies that had been practiced in the old world continued here in the new. These ancient funeral customs and mourning rituals, many of which may seem bizarre and macabre today, have been all but forgotten. At “Death Comes to Sabine Hill” visitors can learn more about these traditions and see just how differently death was viewed and accepted in the past. These special candlelight tours will occur on Friday, October 20th and Saturday, October 21st, and offer guests a chance to experience the historic Taylor House after dark! Visitors will pay their respects to the deceased at the wake and meet historically dressed interpreters throughout the house who will talk about the funeral customs and mourning rituals of days gone by. As the tour progresses outdoors, guests will visit with the coffin maker, grave digger,

professional mourner, and resurrectionist as they share the professions associated with death & funerals in Early America. These tours deal with subject matter that may be too sensitive for younger visitors. Parental discretion is advised. Tour times are 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, & 8:30 pm each night. Admission is $14.00 per individual. Pre-registration is required. Tickets can be purchased at tnstateparks.com/ parks/events/sycamore-shoals. Please be advised that Sabine Hill State Historic Site only offers portable restroom facilities at this time. The historic house is only accessible by steps and an interior staircase. This event is subject to cancellation in the event of significantly inclement weather. Sabine Hill State Historic Site

is located at 2328 West G St. Elizabethton, TN 37643. Who among us could have imagined a movie based on a famous doll would have dominated the summer movie box office when facing off with fast cars, superheroes, Indian Jones, and Tom Cruise among others? I think we were all surprised. Nevertheless, the doll Barbie, full name Barbie Millicent Roberts, crushed the summer box office with the power of a pink Godzilla. The doll, created in 1959 was joined by Ken, full name Kenneth Sean Carson, himself created in 1961, made for a pink summer. When I went to the theater I saw women and girls, dressed in pink having a blast. So many fans had a blast ,"Barbie" the movie is the biggest box office hit directed by a woman in history. Barbie is played by Margot Robbie and her counterpart Ken is portrayed by Ryan Gosling, and the two actors prove to be perfectly cast. Robbie plays "Stereotypical" Barbie and Gosling is "Beach" Ken. The film opens in Barbieland where all types of Barbie and Ken's reside, along with only one Allan (Michael Cera), who was a discontinued friend of Ken. We see a typical day in Barbieland where all the Barbies hold important positions, including President, and are self-

sufficient. Meanwhile, the Kens only participate in recreational activities and are basically window dressing for the Barbies. Beach Ken is only happy when he has the full attention of Barbie and desires a closer relationship with her. However, Barbie is against the idea and rebuffs Ken's idea in favor of a more independent lifestyle. During one of her parties Barbie mentions if any of the Barbies and Kens ever think about death, stopping the party "dead", and leaving the others in shock. When she awakens the next day, Barbie is unable to complete her usual tasks, and her feet are now flat. When Barbie goes to Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon), a wise outcast, she is told she must go to the real world and find the child playing with her in order to be cured. Barbie reluctantly agrees and heads to the real world with surprise stowaway Ken in tow. When the two arrive in Venice Beach, CA, they get into antics that alert the CEO of Mattel (Will Farell) who orders the two to be captured and "reboxed". While Barbie finds her owner Sasha (Genvieve Toussaint) she discovers the tween no longer needs her. Meanwhile, Ken sees how men behave in the real world and realizes he has been conned by Barbie on how he should behave. Ken heads back to Barbieland to tell the other Kens how they can take control and be the real leaders of Barbieland. While she is still in the real world, Barbie is being chased by men of Mattel, but eludes them and heads back to Barbieland with Sasha and her mom Gloria (America Ferrera), When the trio arrive, they see how the Kens have taken over and Barbie becomes depressed. However, Gloria is able to save the day by encouraging Barbie, and let's just say Barbieland is soon back to normal, but will include better treatment for the Kens and the outcast dolls. The film does

a wonderful job of addressing inequality without pounding us over the head, and leaves most of us thinking about how we can positively address the issues dealt with in the film in our world. Yes, the film is still fun, has hilarious moments, and even resulted in Gosling hitting the music charts with his song "I'm Just Ken". The actors in the film are all perfectly cast, and frankly Gosling stole

the film with his on-the-spot performance. I really can't imagine anyone else as Barbie other than Robbie, other than maybe Reese Witherspoon. I am here to say "Barbie" is not just a film for women, but one to be enjoyed by all. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13
