Scary Stories at Fort Watauga Thursday, October 26 at 7:30 pm

Strange things happen around All Hallows Eve, especially at an old fort by the river. But don’t be afraid, Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals isn’t haunted… or is it? Bring a chair, sit a spell, and join us for an evening of stories, songs, and tales that are sure to send a shiver down your spine and tickle your funny bone. On Thursday, October 26th at 7:30 pm, the park will be alive with tales of haints and happenings of days gone by. An annual event not to be missed, Scary Stories will be presented inside the looming palisade walls of Fort Watauga providing a unique atmosphere for an evening of spooky tales geared toward the entire family.

Festival, and many, many more. He is a favorite among programs that enjoy energetic, rib-tickling, family-friendly songs and tales. Catherine Yael Serota is SouthernAppalachian born, from Asheville NC. Her career in human services lasted 42 years and took her from Greensboro NC across the state to Johnson City TN. She developed an interest in storytelling five years ago

as a result of a lifetime of reading, a love of articulation and history, and now time to pursue these in retirement. Catherine is a board member of the Asheville Storytelling Circle, the North Carolina Storytelling Guild, and an alumna member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild. Wallace Shealy, from Flag Pond, TN has the distinction of being named the 2010 Bold Faced Liar Champion

We are excited to welcome five exceptional storytellers to the stage this year: Dr. C. Keith Young, Catherine Yael Serota, Wallace Shealy, and the Front Porch Storytellers - Mary Jane Kennedy, and Chad Bogart. Each of these talented tellers is sure to raise goosebumps on your skin and bring a smile to your face! Dr. C. Keith Young, Raconteur, is delighted to have the opportunity to return to the Scary Stories at Fort Watauga. Having charmed audiences of all ages for more than three decades (since graduating from the ETSU Reading and Story Arts program), Dr. Young has been a featured storyteller/emcee at festival events such as Jonesborough Days, the Virginia Highlands Festival, the Erwin Strawberry Festival, the Stone Soup Festival in Woodruff, South Carolina, Roan Mountain State Park/Miller Homestead Days, Elizabethton’s Covered Bridge

by the Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast. Wallace is active with the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild and has been involved with the National Storytelling Festival for more than 30 years. Whether he’s recalling a tale from his childhood, telling a story based on the Good Book or spinning a yarn you will be delighted listening

to him stretch the truth all out of proportion. Mary Jane Kennedy spent 30 years teaching in Orlando. She has a background in music, voice-over, historical research, and storytelling. She is the co-founder of The Homespun Storytellers and The Overmountain Singers. Also, as a

co-founder of The Front Porch Storytellers, she has presented storytelling and music programs at many schools, civic functions, senior homes, and organizations throughout the Appalachian Highlands for nearly twenty years along with the popular Historic Ghost Walks of Elizabethton. Chad Bogart descends from a long line of Appalachian storytellers. His telling is enhanced by a background in music and historical interpretation. He has been featured as a historic interpreter and character demonstrator at over fifty historic sites across the eastern US. Locally, Chad has been a featured storyteller at the Mountain Makins Festival in Morristown, TN, the Bonnie Kate Theater in Elizabethton, and the campfire series at both Roan Mountain State Park and Rock Creek Park in Erwin. He is also a co-founder of the Front Porch Storytellers. His interest in scary stories stemmed from ghost tales told by his grandmother and are a favorite among his listeners. The program will be presented inside Fort Watauga so be sure to bring your own seat. Also, make sure to dress warmly as the nighttime air along the Watauga River can be chilly and damp. This event is free of charge and is sure to be an exciting evening with family and friends! In the event of extremely inclement winter weather, contact the park about program cancelations and park office closings.

From Apple Devils to Smoke Wolves, ETSU Explores Spooky Appalachian Tales Perhaps you’ve heard of the Apple Devil, a smaller version of Bigfoot purported to roam Central Appalachia, with a special love of apple orchards. Maybe you know someone who reports to have heard the shrieks of the Tennessee Wildman, a towering ape-like creature said to possess piercing red eyes. Many in the area are familiar with the Mothman, made famous by both a book by John Keel and movie starring Richard Gere. Such stories have been part of Appalachian folklore for generations. Elusive creatures, producing eerie sounds that seemed to genuinely frighten those who claim to have seen them. And as Halloween approaches, ETSU explores some of these mountain-based legends – and why they persist. “Central and Southern Appalachia is home to many mysterious and unexplained creatures, many of which are regional versions of widely known

cryptids,” said Dr. Rebecca Adkins Fletcher, assistant director of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services. Fletcher is an anthropologist who teaches a popular course at ETSU called “Paranormal Appalachia.” “While many of the stories are likely told to scare children into staying away from dangerous environments and places, the stories also hold special allure for many adults,” she said. Monsters and cryptids, she said, “can serve many cultural purposes beyond entertainment.”

Monsters and cryptids help us do just that.” For fun, how many of these Appalachian monsters are you familiar with? Useless Facts Autumn & Halloween: 1. Autumn is “aurora season” because geomagnetic storms are about twice as frequent as the annual average during the fall. This increases the chances of observing the stunning Aurora Borealis in the northern regions. 2. A “Harvest Moon” is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. Before artificial lighting, such moonlight was essential to a farmer’s successful harvest. 3. Autumn infants, those born between September and November, have a higher chance of living to be 100 than

those born at other seasons of the year. 4. In the fall, both men’s and women’s testosterone levels are at their peak. Scientists believe the increase is the consequence of old mating impulses (e.g., the fall “rutting season”) or that it is triggered by diminishing daylight. 5. Halloween means saint’s evening. 6. Blue moons on Halloween are rare. 7. Owls are associated with witches. 8. The first Jack O Lanterns were actually made from turnips.

ETSU Unveils New ‘Running Bucky’ Logo Bucky, East Tennessee State University’s energetic mascot, has taken on different looks through the years.

The new logo is a more modern rendition of Bucky that honors the spirit and legacy of the vintage “running Bucky.”

None have been as popular, though, as the “running Bucky,” a vault logo generally reserved for retail to maintain ETSU history but not generate confusion with the current university brand.

Logoed merchandise is available at the ETSU Bookstore; Bucky’s Treasure Chest, located inside William B. Greene Jr. Stadium; and Alumni Hall. Online purchases will be available in the days ahead.

But at Saturday’s Homecoming football game against Mercer, ETSU unveiled a new version of “running Bucky.” “From alumni to students, there has been so much demand for this Bucky,” said Barb Mason, director of Trademark Licensing at ETSU. “We are so excited to offer this exciting new design.”

“We hope this new logo will resonate with the entire ETSU community, connecting the past with the present as we continue to celebrate our ETSU pride,” said Mason. The running Bucky logo was the school’s official athletic logo until 2001.

I’m the type of person who gets stressed and starts cleaning. To rid the chaos in my brain, its soothing to organize my home and workspaces; when my life feels disorderly, I try to rid my physical spaces of clutter. I acquired this habit the good old-fashioned way- through generational trauma of course! In as much as I am a purger during times of duress, my mother is a hoarder (of non-perishable items like clothes and accessories-not food or anything toxic.) Due to being raised in an unstable environment of scarcity, her natural inclination is to hang on to things because one day you might need them. Because I was raised by her in that mentality, I am the complete opposite; where bags of unworn clothes and pantries full of canned goods give her a sense of abundance and peace of mind, it is my greatest source of anxiety. If I start to feel like I’m spiraling, the first way I take back control of my life is by ridding myself of things that do not serve me and are getting in my way. I don’t know if it’s due to the changing of seasons or coming off the most stressful month I’ve had in recent years, but I’m currently deep in the throes of my purger mentality. It always starts out innocently; for example, I noticed the other day I had calendars hanging on my refrigerator that ended in June, and a birthday card from someone I haven’t spoken to in months (my birthday was in December.) Cards and letters are something I do tend to hoard, so instead of tossing it in the trash alongside the outdated calendar and takeout menus, I opened my dedicated “junk drawer” which was overflowing with crap I’m not using. So that opened Pandora’s Box; next thing I knew it was hours later, one small drawer organization had led to a pantry purge and a full trash bag of stuff I hadn’t looked at in months or even

years. I pulled out a check I’d written in and if any of them are low, flat or I’m July 2019- the month I moved into this out of alignment, my car is all over apartment! the road and I’m fighting the wheel. Everything in life can fall under these I’m not saying my coping mechanism 4 categories of health, relationships, is good or even healthy, but I will say financials, and spirituality. in my experience, you cannot make space for new when you’re holding onto the old, and that goes for both the mental and physical realm. When you’re constantly side-stepping around unnecessary clutter it slows down the task at hand, whether that’s searching through bottles of expired spices while cooking or being dragged down by the people around you and their drama. As you continue to surround yourself with things that have reached their expiration date or no longer fit you begin to unintentionally bury yourself alive, and the longer you let that go on, the harder it becomes to dig yourself out. Food, clothing, accessories, ideas and people can all become clutter. And while I’m not suggesting you become Mommy Dearest every time you’re stressed like I do, I think a thorough life audit and purge 2-4 times a year is necessary – healthy even.

Start by evaluating yourself realistically; how healthy are you, physically? Mentally? What is your diet looking like? Have you gained or lost weight? Are you happy more than you’re sad? What are the stimuli creating those emotions? After creating a thorough list and developing a full picture of your current state of health, move on to relationships. And this doesn’t have to mean strictly romance; analyze your friendships and familial relations just as harshly. You are the sum total of the people surrounding you, and the energies you allow most certainly will influence you. While it’s difficult to do, be prepared to remove people from your life. This doesn’t have to involve a big show and dramatic exit; you’d be surprised how many people will naturally slip away when you stop reaching out to them. Remember, there is nothing toxic or hostile about removing people who no longer serve your highest good.

Within your living spaces, tackle those unsavory tasks that don’t fall into the daily cleaning ritual. Go through your closet and donate anything that you’ve Continue through the “wheels” of not worn in 6 months (seasonal attire finances and spirituality. Break down notwithstanding.) Move be tough for some; for me, this is the your heavy furniture and clean the hardest category. I am not, nor have floors underneath, and give the I ever been a particularly ‘religious’ bathroom a deep clean which includes person, so this tire tends to run a little throwing out all those old, crumbling low or flat. If it’s your health, start getting back on track by changing your diet, moving more or contacting a therapist. So on, and so on. Start purging the things you’re holding onto that are weighing you down, whether its unhealthy relationships, negative self-talk or a Starbucks habit that could be putting money in your pocket for something more fulfilling. You will be shocked by how much lighter you feel once you start climbing your way out of the mountain of mental clutter you’ve been unintentionally burying yourself in. I know it can be difficult to release things from your life, but may we all take a lesson from the autumn leaves and be reminded of the beauty and necessity of letting dead things go.

In 1996 Hollywood released a remake of the 1960's television series "Mission Impossible" starring Tom Cruise, and here we are in 2023 with the latest film in the successful franchise "Mission Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One". Cruise continues in the role of IMF agent Ethan Hunt, along with fellow agents Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg). The trio is also assisted by IIsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a disavowed MI6 agent who allied with Hunt's team in the 2015 MI film "Rogue Nation". The film follows the 2018 release "Fallout" and is the seventh installment in the series. The latest film features Hunt on a mission to retrieve a key from the aforementioned IIsa, on whom IMF has placed a bounty. Hunt manages to find IIsa in the Arabian Desert, and advises her to lay low due to the bounty on her, but not before a fight with the bounty hunters. When he travels back to the U.S., Hunt sneaks into a meeting of the various intelligence agencies where he learns about an experimental Artificial Intelligence called the Entity that has managed to go rogue. The Entity has infiltrated intelligence networks and military systems causing panic among those in charge. Ethan decides he must

find a way to destroy the AI, so he and his teammates head to the airport in Abu Dhabi where they plan to intercept the holder of half a key, of which if united its other half, could lead to world domination for the holder of said key. The intelligence community has sent operatives to catch Ethan, so not only is he after the holder of part of the key, he must outwit and outrun the agents after him. While at the airport he encounters the mysterious Grace (Hayley Atwell), who is a professional thief. Ethan and Grace soon find themselves a target at the airport and devise a way to escape. While at the airport, a man from Ethan's past makes an unexpected appearance, but will play a huge role in the film's plot. Grace, being the expert thief, escapes Ethan and takes a flight to Rome, where she is arrested and rescued by Ethan who manages to track her down. The excitement in Rome is action packed with a car chase for the ages that even manages some humorous moments despite all that's at stake. After the whirlwind chase, Grace again escapes from Ethan, but the two eventually cross paths again in Venice where arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kriby) shows up and is directly involved in the search for the keys. The mystery man I mentioned earlier is Gabriel (Easi Morales), a powerful terrorist and a major adversary of Ethan, who is also coveting the keys so he can control the Entity to control the world, but then what good villain wouldn't? The action then moves from Italy to the Alps, where the mission involves the Innsbruck bound Orient Express. The train is where Alanna will meet the buyer of the keys, but her efforts are thwarted by the IMF team, involving plenty of action and thrills. The film ends with a tease for Part 2 of the film, which will hit theaters in June 2024. I can't say enough about the

action and intrigue in this film, as I expect such from MI films, and they never disappoint. Cruise had stated these two films would end the series, but later decided to continue in his role as Ethan Hunt. The stunts in the film are thrilling, as each film attempts to top its predecessor. The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed two previous MI films, and his familiarity with the series serves the film well. The movie is one of the most expensive ever made, and you can clearly understand why after viewing

the film. If you are a fan of the MI films, this latest in the series will definitely please you. If you have never seen any of the previous films, start them now and let them lead up the action-packed "Mission Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part 1". I encourage you to run to the theater like Cruise does in all these films. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13)

I can’t recall exactly when I first saw Nicholas Roeg’s 1971 thriller “Don’t Look Now.” It’s been recent, I think, might even have been last October as I know when I did see it was during a broadcast on TCM or I recorded it off TCM to watch later. The film, particularly the ending, made a hell of an impact on me when I saw it. It was just as incredible as all I had heard about it leading up to seeing it. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie are a married couple who go on an extended trip to Venice following the death of their daughter. John (Sutherland) is there on a job to help with the restoration of a church, during lunch one afternoon the two meet a pair of sisters, one of whom is blind but has psychic gifts. The clairvoyant sister tells the wife, Laura (Christie), that she’s seen their daughter sitting at the table with them and that she is OK, but is trying to warn them of danger. John dismisses this immediately as hogwash, though his wife finds comfort in it, but soon John begins to have mysterious sightings himself that lead him to wonder what is going on. To go any further

with details of the plot would be to give away the cake, and I don’t want to do that, especially if you’ve never seen “Don’t Look Now.” What I will say is as fascinating as “Don’t Look Now” was the first time I saw it, watching it again on the new 4K UHD blu-ray edition from The Criterion Collection, knowing darn well how it ends, adds an entirely new layer to the film. I think knowing what lay ahead for me as the film built towards its climax made the creepiness I find in the film’s ending all the more intense, to the point my fear that I could remember feeling watching it for the first time felt doubled. I was feeling so nervous as those final moments crept closer and closer I took my glasses off to blur the screen so I couldn’t see it crystal clear. “Don’t Look Now” is a hell of a movie, a masterpiece of supernatural suspense and, as they state on the back of the packaging, “one of the great endings in horror history.” Despite my desire to not see the ending crystal clear, this new 4K edition of “Don’t Look Now” from Criterion is just that (how’s that for a transition?). Criterion had issued the film on blu-ray a few years back, but that edition went out of print somewhat quickly. Now, Criterion’s edition is back in print and upgraded as a 4K UHD combo pack, this follows a 4K release overseas from a year or two ago if I’m not mistaken. I didn’t own the previous blu-ray from Criterion, so I can’t compare it against this new one, but I imagine the bonus material is identical. Let’s start by talking about how it looks. This is sourced from a 4K restoration made by Studiocanal, approved by the film’s director of photography, and sourced from the 35mm original camera negative. This 4K restoration is presented in Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range on the Criterion disc. The film looks incredible. The colors are

solid, even though this is more of a muted movie with some of the color palettes, but it’s clear and bright, with a fine layer of grain. The movie looks much better than the time I saw it on TCM when it seemed a little dull and muted. Bonus materials include a conversation between editor Graeme Clifford and film writer and historian Bobbie O’Steen, a short documentary from 2002, a 2006 interview with composer Pino Donaggio, a program on the writing and making of the film, featuring interviews with Richmond, actors Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, and co-screenwriter Allan Scott, interviews with filmmakers Danny

Boyle and Steven Soderbergh, and a Q&A with Roeg from 2003 at London’s Ciné Lumière. All in all, this is a great package and a must-own for the fans of the film, it’s well-timed too for the Halloween season as few films give me the creeps like “Don’t Look Now” does. As nice as it would have been for just the Criterion edition to come back in print, it’s great they not only did so but also took the chance to upgrade the release to a 4K disc as well. “Don’t Look Now” is a truly chilling film and one that rewards the more you watch it. This one is well worth picking up and adding to your collection. See you next week.
