NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Friends!

This cold air is sure making it feel more like Christmas every day! I hope everyone is staying warm. Am I the only parent that struggles with her kids, especially the boys wanting to wear shorts to school?! It drives me crazy! Why in the world do they want to wear shorts and a hoodie? Sorry but I just had to get that off my chest. How is your Christmas shopping going? Do not let this wonderful time of remembering baby Jesus turn into stress about money and shopping. When you are ready to shop I would highly suggest you shop local as much as possible. Whatever you are doing this week I pray you are warm, safe and happy!

Have a great week!

Celebrate a Historical Christmas at Rocky Mount: Where Tennessee’s Story Began Embark on a unique and enchanting journey this holiday season at the Rocky Mount State Historic Site in Piney Flats, Tennessee. Our Candlelight Christmas Tours offer a rare opportunity to step back into the world of 1791, a year that marked a defining moment in Tennessee’s history. As the evening descends, the historic Cobb House, adorned in traditional 18th-century holiday decor, becomes a portal to the past, illuminated by the soft, warm glow of candlelight. Delve into the Heart of Tennessee’s Heritage Historical Immersion: The tours are designed to fully immerse you in the lifestyle and traditions of Tennessee’s first frontier families. As you wander through the candlelit rooms of the Cobb

House, you’ll be transported to a time when Tennessee was on the cusp of statehood, and the Southwest Territory was abuzz with political and social activity. Authentic Celebrations: Experience firsthand how Christmas was celebrated over two centuries ago. The decorations, the ambiance, and even the scents of the era are recreated to offer a truly authentic experience. Discover the Christmas traditions that Governor William Blount, his family, and the residents of Rocky Mount cherished during this festive season. A Night of Historical Significance: Each room in the Cobb House tells a different story, reflecting the customs and daily life of the late 18th century. From the grandeur of the main hall, set for a festive feast, to the more intimate family quarters, every aspect of the tour is carefully

curated to provide a deep understanding of the era. Continue the Celebration in Our Christmas Village After the tour, extend your historical adventure in our Christmas Village, located within our auditorium. This festive gathering spot offers a blend of modern holiday cheer and historical charm, where you can enjoy local crafts, tasty snacks, and memorable moments with Santa Claus. Tickets must be purchased in advance on our website or by phone in order to attend. Our Candlelight Christmas tours will take place on the 8th, and 9th of December. 5 Tips for Getting Kids Involved in Holiday Traditions The holiday season is a magical time of year filled with cherished traditions that bring families together. And while gift-giving is one of the most beloved customs (especially for children), it can sometimes overshadow the true spirit of the season. Here are a few festive winter activities that focus on quality time together and spreading joy. 1. Spread Joy with Kid-Created Cards. According to a recent survey from AmericanGreetings.com, nearly 90% of Americans say that season’s greetings bring them joy; and 92% say they specifically enjoy kids’ homemade cards. This year, eliminate the stress of planning holiday cards—and teach kids about spreading cheer—with the Creatacard app for iPad. The easy-to-use app from American Greetings allows kids to create, color and customize cards using virtual tools, including markers, photo frames, stamps and and stickers. Once complete, the greeting can be sent via email, text, or on social media. It’s a simple, cost-effective and personalized way to teach them about bringing joy to others. 2. Quality Time in the Kitchen. Kids love sweet treats, so start involving them with baking and decorating traditional holiday goodies. In addition to being an excellent way to spend time together as a family, the tradition teaches them cooking basics, like reading recipes and measuring ingredients. Be sure to make it fun with plenty of frosting and sprinkles, or even add some competition with a decorating contest. You can also pair this activity with a cozy movie night or deliver treats to neighbors and family members to teach the importance of kindness and giving.

3. Deck the Halls. A perfect holiday tradition for the whole family to get involved in is the Christmas tree. Whether it’s a trip to pick out a real tree, or setting up an artificial one, you can make it an adventure from set-up to decoration. Plus, crafting homemade ornaments each year is the perfect kid contribution. Not only will they take pride in their creations, but each year will spark a bit of holiday nostalgia.

4. Interactive Christmas Countdown. According to a recent survey, what do 94% of Americans say increases the excitement of the holiday season? Advent calendars. But this year, skip the paper versions and get the whole family engaged with the interactive Jacquie Lawson Advent Calendar. The unique virtual calendar offers breathtaking illustrations of a fictional English country estate with exciting features unlocked daily in December. From a scavenger hunt to music, daily gifts, animated stories, books, games, creative activities, puzzles, and so much more, there, there’ something for everyone to enjoy and look forward to each day of the season. 5. Teach the Spirit of Giving. While it can sometimes be easier to do the holiday shopping yourself, involving kids in gift-giving can teach them the thoughtfulness behind selecting meaningful gifts. If you have a large family, consider a Secret Santa where everyone shops for one specific family member. This is also a good opportunity to help kids make homemade gifts with more sentimental value. For an added lesson, explain how to follow a budget and count money when at the store. By incorporating these tips into your holiday traditions, you will create lasting memories, instill valuable lessons and celebrate the joy of giving with your family. (StatePoint)

With temperatures forecasted to fall into the teens this evening, many residents will crank up the heat. Half of home heating fires are reported during the months of December, January and February. The National Fire Protection Association reports that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths. The Johnson City Fire Department wants to ensure homes are warm and safe during the frigid winter months. “By following a few simple safety tips, you can prevent most home heating fires from happening,” said Chief David Bell. “Smart home heating procedures can save lives.” SAFETY TIPS · Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment. · Turn portable heaters off when leaving a room or going to bed. · Get a qualified professional to inspect heating equipment and clean chimneys every year.

· Always use the fuel specified by the manufacturer for fuel-burning space heaters. · Never use the oven to heat your home. · Make sure fireplaces have a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. · Install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Chief Bell advises the community to be prepared in case a fire breaks out at their home, “Make sure you have a home fire escape plan and practice it. Once you are outside, never go back into a burning home.” The JCFD is dedicated to helping ensure your safety. If you cannot afford smoke alarms for your home or need help installing them, contact us at 423-975-2840 or: jcfd.wufoo.com/forms/smokedetector-request-form/.

fun, and conviviality without no problem. I suggest you consult your friends or other motorcyclists to know which motorcycle can fit your level and age. In addition, what I love most about motorcycles is that it is not a sport that requires too much effort from the body, and this is the main reason why adults that There is no specific age at which you are too old to ride a have relatively bad physical abilities motorcycle. The most common you will have had daily pain and mistake I personally see among difficulties over the years as the adults who want to start riding a years weaken the body. So, the motorcycle is that they do not get a only thing I can say for an aged model that suits their level. Adults is just getting the motorcycle that suits your level. I personally need to understand that they do not need a very fast motorcycle, know people who are 70 plus especially when they are over 70 and are still riding and even a 90-year-old who still manages to years because, at this age, it is more ride, but their purpose of riding difficult to operate a motorcycle due to more physical disabilities is not for competitions, just for and the loss of understanding that is impaired at this ages. However, if you are certain you are very healthy and your level of understanding and functioning is excellent, yes, of course, you can. It is also important to note that being able to ride a motorcycle doesn’t mean riding the motorcycle at a very crazy speed. So, I personally recommend for any adult over 70 years to get a motorcycle that doesn’t crazy speeds, especially if Beanz Biker Corner reach you have physical disabilities. Tis the season for all things sparkling! Whether you’re hosting a holiday soiree for friends, family, employees, or simply ringing in the new year as a party of 1, sparkling wine is the perfect accompaniment. And you don’t have to break the bank on pricey Champagne or – worse – settle for mass produced $4.99 bubbles from the local grocery store. Cava is the underdog you might not have heard of, but for the sake of your budget and your taste buds, its time to get acquainted.

amounts of time to develop texture and flavor, and as the bottles are aging, a riddler is assigned to rotate the bottles by hand in the racks every single day, until eventually they’re completely upside down and the lees have fallen to the neck. At that point, the bottles are placed neckdown into a freezing liquid which causes the lees to freeze into a solid mass, the metal cap is removed and the pressure from the CO2 shoots the solid lees out of the bottle in a process known as “disgorgement.” Finally, to refill what was lost during disgorgement, a mix of wine and sugar is added back to the bottle and the bottles are corked, wired and labeled.

average bottle of good quality cava will run you $15-$25. But please, don’t reach for the first label you spot on your big box store shelf. Sadly, the Cava region has been overpowered by a handful of large, powerful brands (like Freixenet) who mass produce low quality juices and distribute around the world. This would not be an exemplary bottle of fine Cava. Visit your closest specialty wine store and seek out bottles from low yield productions and small, family owned wineries. These people typically employee all organic farming practices and create outstanding wines made from love and tradition.

Contrary to champagne who uses Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, the native grapes primarily grown in this region that are authorized for use in Cava wines are Macabeo, Xarel.lo and Parellada. Additionally, in 1986, the use of Chardonnay was permitted due to its easy growing capacity, intense aroma and versatility. There are also some red grapes authorized for use in Cava wines; Red Garnacha (grenache), Trepat, Monastrell, and Pinot Noir can all be added to create beautiful rose bubbles.

"Oppenheimer" is one of those films that makes you realize how little you actually know about physics unless you study or have studied in that field. So director Christopher Nolan presented us with "physics 101" in the biographical thriller. Of course we all know how this film dominated the summer box office with the "Barbie" film, with the two making unusual cinema pals. The film first introduces us to J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) as a 22-year-old doctoral student under the instruction of experimental physicist Patrick Blackett (James D'Arcy) at the University of Cambridge in England. While at Cambridge,. Oppenheimer becomes homesick and suffers anxiety while dealing with his required lab work, leading him to almost carry out an unfortunate action against his professor. Despite his unhappiness, Oppenheimer is recommended to study theoretical physics in Germany, where he finally completes his PhD. After completing his studies in Germany, Oppenheimer returns to the U.S. and begins teaching at the University of California in Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology. While teaching, he meets his future wife Katherine "Kitty"

Puening (Emily Blunt), a biologist and ex-communist, and later has an affair with a member of the Communist Party USA Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). Thus, Oppenheimer is intelligent in the world of physics, but lacks such in his personal life. In 1938 when they discovered Nazi Germany had made tremendous progress in nuclear fission, Oppenheimer and his colleagues strive to replicate their results. Then we jump to 1942, when Oppenheimer is recruited by U.S. Army General Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) to lead the Manhattan Project in order to develop an atomic bomb before the Nazis, but not before he declares he has no communist connections or sympathies. Being Jewish, Oppenheimer is especially anxious to develop the bomb before the Nazis and recruits a top notch scientific team to help in the endeavor. Eventually the scientists are successful in their creation of the bomb, but after Germany surrenders many question the need for the weapon, but Oppenheimer believes use of the bomb will quickly end the ongoing war in the Pacific. Oppenheimer and Alfert Einstein (Tom Conti) had discussions about the destruction of the entire Earth if the bomb is used. Despite their concern, the bomb passes the Trinity test (the first detonation of a nuclear weapon), and President Harry S. Truman (Gary Oldman) orders the bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The resulting devastation leads Japan to surrender, and forces Oppenheimer in the public eye, where he is dubbed "father of the atomic bomb". However, he is haunted by the immense destruction and mass fatalities, and recommends Truman restrict further nuclear weapon development, but is dismissed by Truman. Oppenheimer's stance against further nuclear weapon

development is not popular in Washington, and he comes under attack by AEC Chairman Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey, Jr.), as tensions rise in the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Strauss is part of a hearing which is intended to eliminate Oppenheimer's political influence, and it does not end well for one of the gentlemen. The film is fascinating and tense, even though at times you feel as if you are taking a course in physics. All the actors are superb, and expect Oscar to come calling during

awards season. Downey, Jr. was especially effective as the slimy and underhanded Strauss, and made you almost jeer him. Murphy was perfectly cast in the lead role, and dominated the screen in his scenes. Director Nolan has created another masterpiece to go along with his excellent filmography. "Oppenheimer" is a perfect film for history buffs and those who love quality cinema. (Rated R)

Over the years there have been many studio executives who have managed to fail upward and mismanage things. But over this year the CEO of Warner Brothers Discovery, David Zaslav, has managed to develop a reputation as maybe the worst person to ever run a major motion picture studio. If you follow film chatter online then you’re no doubt aware that earlier this month Warner Brothers announced a completed movie starring Jon Cena called “Coyote vs. Acme” was to be shelved for tax break purposes. Almost immediately, people who worked on the film shared their heartbreak on Twitter by also sharing pictures and behind-the-scenes footage of what we were going to be missing out on. The film was to be a live-action movie featuring the characters who have been the crown jewels of the Warner Brothers lexicon, the Looney Tunes. “Coyote vs. Acme” is premised around our old friend Wile E. Coyote finally suing the Acme corporation after decades of their products constantly backfiring on him in his endless pursuit of the Roadrunner. Among the highlights shared was a reel of impressive practical effects, stunt work, and a very fun clip from the film’s composer who showed an

entire choir singing classical music but all in “meep meeps.” It sounded like it was going to be a fun movie and potentially a big box-office hit. Yet, Warner Brothers shelved it for a 30 million dollar tax break. It’s not the first time they’ve done this under the Zaslav reign. Notably, a film based on “Batgirl” that was close to completion was shelved, and a new movie with the characters from “Scooby Doo.” I can not think of a time this has ever happened, it’s downright like the plot out of Mel Brooks’ comedy classic “The Producers” where an unscrupulous Broadway producer purposely tries to make a stage show that will flop so he and his partner can keep all the money they over raised for it. It’s also heartbreaking to me to think of all the people who worked hard on these films, only to have their work placed on a shelf to rot. Perhaps the most famous example of this strange management is how Zaslav earlier this year made an appearance at the Turner Classic Movies film festival and talked of his love at being the head of Warner Brothers, and his love for movies. Turner Classic Movies is the fiercely beloved cable channel owned by Warner Brothers which has been the north star for years in celebrating the rich heritage of movies and, to a larger scope, film literacy and preservation. This is why it was very odd after reissuing the protective fan base of TCM how much he cares, he then promptly began to gut the staff, including Charles Tabish, the longtime programming director who shaped the network into what is today. The backlash to this was fierce and vocal. David Zaslav was requested to speak on the phone by Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, who feared what it meant for the network. Can you imagine failing so badly at your job that two of America’s greatest filmmakers sent you a note that said “See me?” Though much of the TCM staff didn’t return, Tabish was rehired. Fans still fear for the

future of TCM, but as of now, it appears to be holding on. So what of the reaction to the shelving of “Coyote vs. Acme?” For one thing, several filmmakers contacted their representatives and told them to cancel planned meetings with the studio, as why work hard on a movie just to have some suits in a stuffy office and stick it on a shelf forever? However, WB has reversed its position on “Coyote vs. Acme” and is allowing the filmmakers to shop the movie around to another distributor. This is, frankly, a massive embarrassment. Warner Brothers is going to allow another studio to release a movie starring their most iconic characters, the Looney Tunes. When you think of Bugs Bunny you think of Warner Brothers. Art and commerce have always clashed, but I’ve never seen, or read, of a studio being run like this before. We live in a weird time when it comes to American movies. That’s one reason why I advocate so

passionately for education, physical media, and igniting a love of movies early. The tapestry that is movies is wide and varied. You can love “Casablanca,” “Halloween,” and “Plan 9 from Outer Space” equally. You can be OK with one of them being an Oscar-winning defining classic, and the others being cult movies. There is room for it all and one does not cancel out the other. I’ve talked of how the mainstream’s “abandonment” of physical media means that the nerds are taking over and we are having a blast with it. This is true, but I do fear the day when we just are OK with movies being on some nameless streaming service for maybe a week if we are lucky. I love movies, and I want to see them thrive, I don’t like it when a studio celebrating it’s 100th anniversary looks like it’s being gutted for a quick buck by someone who previously ran HGTV. It’s a sad state of affairs, and I hope it changes soon. See you next week
