NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Friends!

This cold air is sure making it feel more like Christmas every day! I hope everyone is staying warm. Am I the only parent that struggles with her kids, especially the boys wanting to wear shorts to school?! It drives me crazy! Why in the world do they want to wear shorts and a hoodie? Sorry but I just had to get that off my chest. How is your Christmas shopping going? Do not let this wonderful time of remembering baby Jesus turn into stress about money and shopping. When you are ready to shop I would highly suggest you shop local as much as possible. Whatever you are doing this week I pray you are warm, safe and happy!

Have a great week!

Love, Lisa Durbin Publisher

Searching for the perfect holiday gifts for little ones? Think about their daily activities and consider how you can make those moments more special. From playtime to bedtime, here are five holiday gift ideas that infuse fun and wonder into kids’ routines: Bath Time Comfort If bath time could use a little revamp, consider a set of bath toys. While rubber ducks are a classic option, today’s bath toys don’t just float, they also spray water, spin, make music and light up, keeping babies and toddlers occupied and engaged while getting clean. Pair this gift with an animal bath wrap, so that getting out of the tub is just as fun. Ducks, bears and dinosaurs are some of the cutest and coziest options, and are great for the pool and beach, too. Time to Build Kids can get started on their very first DIY projects with the

Drill & Learn Workbench from VTech. With nine included project ideas, young builders can learn to use its drill, drill press, sander, circular saw, screwdriver, vise and hammer. Three modes allow young builders to listen to music while they work, explore sounds and facts about each tool, and show off their discoveries in quiz mode. Storage and trays help kids keep a tidy workspace so they’ll be ready for their next project. Glamour and Magic Bring magic into playtime with the Style & Glam On Unicorn. Kids can choose from six glamorous accessories to decorate the unicorn’s horn and tail, then hear the unicorn describe each accessory, helping kids explore colors, counting, feelings and more. Kids can coordinate the color of the unicorn’s star by pressing the gem on her necklace, or place an accessory on her horn to see her star change color to match. Music adds to the dress-up party fun, and her horn and star will flash to the beat. Creative Mealtimes Make meals more creative with BPA-free, silicone placemats that can be doodled on again and again, and a set of colorful dry erase markers. Easy to clean and featuring designs meant to educate and entertain, they offer parents convenience and little ones endless fun. Bedtime Stories Storytime With Sunny is not just a bedside lamp, but also an animated and entertaining friend and storyteller that invites

participation in more than 300 activities. Sunny shares fairy tales, classic songs, guessing games, silly jokes and tongue twisters, and also encourages good manners, leads little ones in mindfulness exercises, and teaches healthy habits, such as brushing teeth. When the day is done, set the gentle alarm, and let kids take a quiet moment with Sunny as she leads them in a bedtime routine. They will fall asleep to her softly glowing light. From sunrise to sunset, great holiday gifts can help you bring magic, fun and creativity into every part of the day. (StatePoint)

n ic k er s This distinguished gentleman is Snickers. He hasn’t been too lucky with finding his furever family - he has been returned several times. He is pretty shy (but not aggressive) and gets stressed around multiple cats. He is a gentle soul in a big boy body.

He likes to play but doesn’t have the crazy kitten energy. Snickers is 7 years old, neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped. All our “vintage” cats have up to $35 reduction of their adoption fee.

St. Nicholas Day: A popular December holiday in many European countries, St. Nicholas Day, celebrates St. Nicholas of Myra, the man whose life inspired

the tradition of Santa Claus and Father Christmas. He gave all of his money to the needy and was known for his compassion for children and all those in need. The holiday honors the man on the anniversary of his death, December 6, 343 A.D. Many celebrate with parades, feasts, gift giving, and festivals. Christmas: People celebrate this Christian holiday by going to church, giving gifts, and sharing the day with their families. In some parts of Europe, “star singers” go caroling—singing special Christmas songs—as they walk behind a huge star on a pole. The Christmas festivities in Ireland tend to be more religious in nature rather than being about gifts. Christmas celebrations last from Christmas Eve until January 6 (Epiphany). On December 26, known as St. Stephen’s Day, an Irish tradition that is known as the Wren Boys Procession takes place. Children go from door to door singing, holding a stick that is topped by a holly bush and a wren. They ask for money for the “starving wren,” which goes into their pockets. In ancient times, a real wren was killed and fastened to the stick, but today fake wrens are used. The Christmas Eve festivities in the Ukraine are known as Sviata Vechera, which means “Holy Supper.” The celebration begins when the first evening star is sighted in the night sky.

In farming communities, the household head brings in a sheaf of wheat, which symbolizes the wheat crops of Ukraine. It is called “didukh,” which translates to “grandfather spirit.” In homes within the city, a few stalks of wheat may be used to decorate the table. New Year: In Ecuador, families dress a straw man in old clothes on December 31. The straw man represents the old year. The family members make a will for the straw man that lists all of their faults. At midnight, they burn the straw man, in hopes that their faults will disappear with him. Mardi Gras: The time of Lent is a solemn one of reflection for Christians, so the Tuesday before Lent begins is a time of merry-making for many people around the world. In New Orleans, people wear costumes and attend huge parades for the festival of Mardi Gras. Brazil’s Carnival also features parades, costumes, and music. This day is also known as Shrove Tuesday. In England, some towns have pancake contests in which women run a race while flipping a pancake at least three times. Mardi Gras usually occurs in February or March, 47 days prior to Easter.

Tis the season for all things sparkling! Whether you’re hosting a holiday soiree for friends, family, employees, or simply ringing in the new year as a party of 1, sparkling wine is the perfect accompaniment. And you don’t have to break the bank on pricey Champagne or – worse – settle for mass produced $4.99 bubbles from the local grocery store. Cava is the underdog you might not have heard of, but for the sake of your budget and your taste buds, its time to get acquainted.

amounts of time to develop texture and flavor, and as the bottles are aging, a riddler is assigned to rotate the bottles by hand in the racks every single day, until eventually they’re completely upside down and the lees have fallen to the neck. At that point, the bottles are placed neckdown into a freezing liquid which causes the lees to freeze into a solid mass, the metal cap is removed and the pressure from the CO2 shoots the solid lees out of the bottle in a process known as “disgorgement.” Finally, to refill what was lost during disgorgement, a mix of wine and sugar is added back to the bottle and the bottles are corked, wired and labeled.

average bottle of good quality cava will run you $15-$25. But please, don’t reach for the first label you spot on your big box store shelf. Sadly, the Cava region has been overpowered by a handful of large, powerful brands (like Freixenet) who mass produce low quality juices and distribute around the world. This would not be an exemplary bottle of fine Cava. Visit your closest specialty wine store and seek out bottles from low yield productions and small, family owned wineries. Contrary to champagne who uses Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, the native grapes primarily grown in this region that are authorized for use in Cava wines are Macabeo, Xarel.lo and Parellada. Additionally, in 1986, the use of Chardonnay was permitted due to its easy growing capacity, intense aroma and versatility. There are also some red grapes authorized for use in Cava wines; Red Garnacha (grenache), Trepat, Monastrell, and Pinot Noir can all be added to create beautiful rose bubbles.

The DC character of Blue Beetle is certainly not that familiar to non-comic book fans. The current version of Blue Beetle, aka Jaime Reyes, a Mexican-America, made his first appearance in the comic book world in Infinite Crisis #3 in 2006. Reyes is the third character to assume the Blue Beetle mantle, with the original being introduced back in 1939 in Fox Comics. The original Beetle was followed by two more characters in the role in 1964 and 1966 respectively. The new incarnation of Blue Beetle came about as a result of Reyes having an alien scarab bond with him, giving him a suit with extraterrestrial power. The movie "Blue Beetle" begins just before Jaime (Xolo Mariduena) becomes in contact with the scarab. Reyes has returned to Palmera City after graduating from Gotham Law University ready to celebrate with his family. However, Reyes is met with the distressing news his family is facing eviction from their home due to financial struggles. Despite the families money struggles, Reyes sister Milagro (Belissa Escobedo) lands a job at the home of

Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), the CEO of Kord Industries, who have located an ancient alien artifact know as the Scarab. Jaime is also working at Victoris's home, but both are fried after Jaime attempts to stop a confrontation between Victoria and her niece Jenny (Bruna Marquezine). Despite the setback, Jenny thanks him for his effort, and tells him to stop by Kord Tower the next day for a job opportunity. The following day, Jenny discovers Victoria is using the found Scarab for her OMAC (One Man Army Corps) projects, and realizes her aunt is up to no good. Jenny then steals the Scarab and while fleeing the Kord Tower hands the hidden Scarab to Jaime and tells him to keep the box she handed him safe and not to look inside. Once at home with his family, Jaime is convinced to open the hamburger box the device is hidden in. Once Jaime touches the Scarab, it activates and fuses with him, encasing him in an armored exoskeleton which causes panic with him and his family members. After the shock of what has happened subsides, Jaime confronts Jenny after rescuing her from Victoria' forces. Jenny reveals the Scarab has willingly chosen Jaime to be its host, and he has no choice in the matter. Now that he has discovered he must deal with his new situation, Jaime accepts his destiny and, along with his family, which includes his eccentric Uncle Rudy (George Lopez), take-no-prisoners grandmother Nana (Adriana Barraza), his mom Rocio (Elpidia Carrillo), and sister Milagro, team with Jenny to battle Victoria and her formattable OMAC forces led by bodyguard Igancio

Carapax (Raoul Max Trujillo). Carapax is a formattable foe as he has been injected with a prototype of the Scarab, so his battle with Jaime is intense. During the story Jaime discovers via Jenny about the original Blue Beetle, who happed to be Jenny's father. Jaime accepts the mantle of Blue Beetle and discovers a Bugship used by his predecessor. The film concludes with an epic showdown on an island near Cuba, leaving our hero and his family triumph. The film is pure fun, with Mariduean being perfectly cast as BB. It's disappointing the movie didn't fare better at the box office, as the Blue Beetle" is not only

action packed, but introduces a live action version of a cool but often overlooked DC character. It has been announced that Mariduena will continue in the role of Blue Beetle in the new DC cinematic universe, of which I am happy to hear. The film does feature a mid-credits scene and one animated scene post credits. I recommend "Blue Beetle" for comic book fans and anyone who wants to kick back and enjoy an action-packed film origin story for a superhero who deserves the live-action treatment. (Rated PG-13)

A game plan had been made before Thanksgiving. The idea was to get most of the non-tree-related Christmas decorations up before the day of the feast. Storage tubs of decorations were brought forth and then placed in a holding pattern in the guest room since we had no one coming to stay with us. But, as well know, make a plan, and sometimes life will find a way of throwing everything into chaos. The tree was to go up the Friday after Thanksgiving with trimming in the evening. The tree went up just fine, only it was leaning to one side a little. It’s a pre-lit tree, which is what is in vogue these days. However, if you don’t line up the center rod that connects the three sections the lightning won’t work properly. Even when it does, the lights that the tree came with felt a little lacking last year, so we got additional strands of lights to augment those.

the rest of them were off. At least we had bought new lights last year, so I got all those on the tree, then added another tangled, mangled, knotted strand from the deep back of a storage box to make up for what wasn’t working. I do not know how, but I do know that one of the hard truths of life is that no matter how hard you try how much you neatly and carefully put away the Christmas tree lights, they will become a tangled mess by next December. I don’t know if it’s the Summer heat that penetrates the garage during their long rest that makes the wires co-mingle, but something makes them ball up to where you spend a lot of time swearing and trying to work them out into a cohesive line again.

Lights de-tangled, frustrations growing, I wrapped the lights around the tree and plugged them into the outlet. They glowed beautifully, the tree was lovely, and ornaments began to hang. After getting the tree lined up When we finished I stood back to correctly, and double-checking all the contact points for power inside admire the tree. It looked perfect. I was exhausted at that point as I the tree were set right, I plugged the tree in and turned it on. It was a had spent three days in my kitchen whole lot of nothing. Just the lights cooking and trying to decorate this and that and the other. I turned off on the bottom third came on and the tree, brushed my teeth, and went to bed.

Batteries Not Included

By Andy Ross theloaferonlineprint @gmail.com

The following morning, after a very deep sleep, I woke up and left my bed to get a cup of coffee. Coffee in hand I went over to the tree and turned it on. It was a grey, overcast morning, so the tree looked beautiful against the darker skies outside. I was happy that I was going to be able to enjoy a quiet, restful Saturday. No decorating to do, no baking or cooking to worry about, just rest. That is when the lights on the top two-thirds of the tree went out. My jaw dropped, literally dropped, like a moment in a movie. I was annoyed and confused. I set my coffee down and began to fiddle with the tree. I looked for where the strands were connected and

reset the connections. Nothing. I turned the tree off and checked the fuse at the plug, it was fine. I was confused as to why lights that were brand new last season had just given up the ghost. This led to one conclusion which really set my teeth on edge. I would have to go get new lights, then remove all the ornaments on the upper two-thirds of the tree and start all over again. Gone was my restful Saturday. Gone was my day of finally having a break from the madness of Turkey Day. Off I went to shower and get ready, then off I went to the store. The store was almost out of Christmas lights as of course they were. They had the multi-color ones, but I needed warm white to match the rest of my tree. I was

impatient and didn’t want to wait for an online order, I needed them now so I could be done with the tree and maybe rest before I had to start shopping for all my family and friends. I got lights, I got them on the tree, they worked, and then I spent another hour getting all those ornaments back on the tree. I was tired, I was almost 4:30 by the time I had finished with everything. I ordered a pizza and collapsed into a recliner. I was grumpy, over Christmas decor, and hoping it’s not a prescient of how the holiday season is going to go. So far we are holding but with some trepidation as the big day approaches. See you next week.
