31 Ponderings to Ponder A Christmas in the Past 33 Social Sentiments: You're Doing Social Media All Wrong

Happy Holidays! Christmas time gives me such a warm and fuzzy feeling. We are making plans to do all the fun things packed into the week of Christmas. 9 of our children and all but 2 of our grandkids live here in Johnson City and the 2 that are in Texas will be home soon along with our son in law and grandbabies! We are going to do all of our usual traditions such as seeing all of the Christmas lights, Spiderman and the new Sing 2 movie, Waffle House on Christmas eve and lots of family time. This is what I live for during the holidays and every day. Just having all of my family around makes my heart so full. I hope that all of you will get to spend time with your family and friends. Please notice the information we are showing this week about the toy donation for the children being helped by the Haven of Mercy this year. There is nothing like putting a smile on the face of a child! Whatever you are doing this month I hope that you are happy and healthy and enjoying what you love. I love all of you and I appreciate your loyal support of The Loafer. Please remember to shop local as much as you can to support our local business families.

10 Great Christmas Movies to Watch This Season By [https://EzineArticles.com/expert/Jay_ Sandy_Ross/1202604]Jay Sandy Ross Christmas time is coming up fast! And, Christmas time is about family and togetherness. We have put together some really cool recommendations for great movies to watch for the Christmas season that the whole family will enjoy. These are all brilliant movies to rent or buy to watch all year long! Watching these movies will be great for the whole family to watch, while remembering Christmas’s past. 10. The Polar Express Staring an animated Tom Hanks. On The night before Christmas, a doubtful boy boards a magical train that’s headed to the North Pole and Santa Claus’s home town. 9. The Muppet Christmas Carol Starting in this Christmas classic, Michael Caine and The Muppet characters tell their side of the movie classic tale of an mature and bitter miser’s recovery on The night before Christmas. 8. The Santa Clause Tim Allen stars in this witty tale of when

a man not meaning to, kills Santa on The night before Christmas, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place. 7. The Nightmare Before Christmas In this early 90’s classic Jack Skellington, king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town, but doesn’t quite understand the concept. 6. A Christmas Carol (1951) This is a classic telling of Charles Dickens, An old hateful miser is given a chance for recovery when he is preoccupied by ghosts on The night before Christmas. 5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation The generally memorable Christmas Movie. The Griswold family’s is getting ready for a good family Christmas unsurprisingly it turn into a huge failure. 4. Home Alone A true Christmas classic of an eight year-old, who is unintentionally left behind while his folks flies to France for Christmas, he must defend his household against two dumb burglars.

3. Elf By far the newest movie on our Christmas movie list, but it quickly becoming a classic tale of inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf village due to his clumsy size, a guy raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in seek out of his true character. 2. Scrooged Bill Murray stars as a sarcastically selfish TV executive who is haunted by three ghosts that educate some lessons on The night before Christmas. 1. A Christmas Story No Christmas Movie List would be full without Ralphie trying to satisfy his teachers, Santa and parents that a Red Ryder BB gun truly is the just right gift for the 1940’s. These are just small sample of movies that are great to watch, however you can find more at our website, Christmas Movies List - [http://www.christmas-movies-list.info/] Article Source: [http://EzineArticles. com/?10-Great-Christmas-Movies-toWatch-This-Season&id=6617144] 10 Great Christmas Movies to Watch This Season

Ah, Christmas time is upon on us once again. Ponderings to Ponder

By Tim Simpson timsimpson2008 @gmail.com

Christmas was always such a special time in my family. When I was a little girl, our Christmas tree would have those huge light up bulbs on it and the silver icicles that you just would throw on the tree. Those icicles were not my mom’s favorite decoration because of the mess they would make when they dropped to the floor. But my dad and I sure did enjoy throwing them on the tree. I remember how excited I was during the weeks leading

up to Christmas. At the time, I never realized that some Christmases, my parents struggled to buy us gifts. So, sometimes there were not many gifts, but they always made sure we knew we were loved. My mom would spend hours in the kitchen cooking because all my family would come to our house to eat Christmas dinner. I loved the excitement in the air. The anticipation as the stack of presents grew under the tree as my family would add to it. But I guess my all-time favorite memory is my dad’s fruitcake he would make from scratch. He would spend days looking for just the right ingredients. Then we would spend hours shelling walnuts and pecans. Actually, I hated cracking all those nuts. I had to be very careful because he needed whole pecans to decorate the outside of the cake. However, even though I hated shelling the nuts, I adored those moments with my dad. Those precious moments of just me and him preparing his fruitcake. I still have pictures of the infamous Worley fruitcake. When I was blessed with a child of my own, I wanted to make sure he had special Christmas memories like I did. When he was a little boy, we would set out cookies and milk for Santa. He would be so surprised Christmas morning when the cookies would be

NOIR

eaten, and the milk would be gone. And then he would see his special gift from Santa. Now that he is grown, the surprises have changed, but I still hope they make special memories for him. This Christmas will be very special for me. I am blessed with a new love in my life, Tim. He has awakened those childlike hopes and promises in me that had been missing. The thrill of wonderful surprises. The joy of finding just the right gift for him. The anticipation of the look on his face when he opens that unique gift. God truly blessed me this year with the special gift of an extraordinary and charming gentleman that has captured my heart. If you have any special Christmas memories and would like to share them here, email me at timsimpson2008@gmail.com. Also, from now until Christmas, if you would like a free audio book by Tim Simpson, any book of your choosing, email him at: timsimpson2008@gmail.com.

Ah, the holidays. The season of giving and spreading cheer, opening your hearts and wallets to those less fortunate with the anticipation of nothing but a smile in return.

AKA that is the least amount of money you can leave and not be considered a jerk. Leave anything above that and you’re a hero. Leave 50% and above and you’re going to receive preferential, rockstar treatment. An easy way to Yeah right. calculate this amount in your head is For those in roles of service and to take 10% of the amount and double hospitality, this is probably the time of it. For example, if you buy a beer and year to experience the greatest extremes; it costs $7, a reasonable tip would be you see the best of the best as well as $1.40. If you take your family of 4 out the best of the worst. I don’t know if to a fancy steakhouse and the total is it’s the added stress of holiday chaos $350, then $70 is the absolute least you brought on by forced family fun and should leave. At the end of the day, tight finances, or the company funded these people are running their butts Christmas parties providing a free meal off to make your life a bit easier; tip to overworked staff who don’t typically accordingly and treat them with respect. dine out, but for every generous and kind-hearted customer, you get 2 Karens. On the subject of respect, there are certain things customers do that I’m not As someone who has spent over half certain they know are disrespectful to their life working within the world of the staff. One of the big ones is yelling service based sales, I thought most of their name. It’s wonderful if you find out these concepts were pretty common your bartenders name instead of just knowledge. But somehow there are calling them “hey you.” But honestly, people out there who have dodged a having someone yell your name across tour of duty in restaurant/retail holiday a crowded room repeatedly while you’re hell during their lifetime, so I will blame taking care of other guests is somehow their acts of terror on sheer ignorance worse, especially if the customer is a instead of jumping to the immediate stranger. If your bartender or server conclusion they’re just terrible humans. or hotel desk clerk is assisting another If you’ve committed one of these service person, politely wait your turn. Your industry sins, whether knowingly or side of ranch or just emptied glass isn’t unknowingly, never fear! I’m here to the most important world problem, and educate and forgive so you can move 95% of the time your server has already forward in the name of redemption. taken note of it and is working toward fixing it. If you do have an issue, wait a Let’s dive in at the most sensitive few moments and when they are within subject-tipping. For those who are unaware, the minimum wage for servers earshot, a polite “Excuse me ma’am/sir” usually does the trick. Try to remember and bartenders never increases and in there is 1 of them and 20 of you who all most parts of the country is still $2.13/ hour. (For the record, I don’t know how need things at once. Give a little grace this is legal but that is a conversation for and ask yourself if you would be capable of doing any better. a later date or something you can take up with members of congress.) With that Bearing that concept in mind, let’s being said, the people waiting on you discuss mistakes. No one, not one hand and foot while you sit on your rear person reading this, is perfect. In fact, end and put things in your mouth rely you probably make mistakes daily on the generosity of strangers to make regardless of whether they’re big or ends meet. The industry minimum small. When you’re trying to tend the standard for tipping is 20% of your total; needs of dozens of people at once, things are going to happen. A server might fat finger an order. The kitchen might forget to leave the onions off your salad. The credit card machine might go on the fritz. The point is, stuff

happens, and none of it is a malicious act against you personally. Does that mean you have to accept it and say nothing? Absolutely not! You are paying for this service and it should be what you wanted. If your order is incorrect, politely bring it to your server’s attention. They will typically prioritize rectifying the mistake immediately over their other responsibilities. If you don’t care for what you ordered after a couple of bites, stop eating and let them know! We want you to enjoy your experience, because that begets repeat customers and good word of mouth, which brings in more revenue. But we’re not mind readers, and also, if you complain about a meal and you ate all but 2 bites, we find it a little difficult to believe you didn’t enjoy it. Most places will comp the item that was not up to standard, but don’t pull this crap just to try and get free stuff. That is the worst kind of person. That leads me to my biggest soapboxthe internet complainer. Just like with everything else online, the internet has made it way too easy for people to passive aggressively hurt others with zero consequence. Before you take to Yelp or Google to hammer out an angry review of your experience, ask yourself a few questions. A.) was this incident really so terrible and lasting on my quality of life that it requires publicly dragging the restaurant or employee, affecting their source of future income? B.) Did you try to resolve the issues while you were there in person or did you say nothing? Did you try calling the restaurant and speaking to a manager first? C.) When was the last time you left a review of a good experience? Because if you’ve got the time to sit down and leave a negative review over an overcooked piece of fish, then you’ve got time to give praise every time you’ve left a business satisfied. Most of the time if someone takes to the internet to complain they’re simply wanting to feel heard or get something free out of it, which is fine. But understand that these things live online forever and your fleeting rant impacts future customers’ decision to visit or could even get someone fired. Try to handle your issues

in a private manner at a managerial level at all costs. This time of year is hard on people in hospitality. This is when we’re at our busiest and most of these positions have no benefits, so if we don’t work, we don’t get paid. Many places like hotels and restaurants are open on holidays, requiring employees to spend that time away from loved ones and miss out on cherished memories. You have no idea what your lazy, forgetful waitress might be going through- a sinus infection, a divorce, a death in the family. There is no paid bereavement, sick days or mental health days in this line of work. Give people the benefit of doubt and be grateful for their efforts to give you a break. It truly means a lot to leave good reviews and mention the people who served you by name; our superiors see that and it could even lead to promotions. Be kind and keep in mind before you visit an establishment that if you’ve got money to spend on the product, then you also need to budget tipping on the service. And bumping that 20% up to 25% is always appreciated!

This time of year there is an overwhelming choice of Christmas movies to watch, the classics and new efforts released yearly. This year sees the release of "8-Bit Christmas", based on the Kevin Jakubowski novel of the same name. The film stars Neil Patrick Harris in the role of Jake Doyle who is dealing with his young daughter's wish for a cell phone for Christmas. Jake keeps telling his daughter she is too young for the responsibility of a cell phone, and when the two arrive at his mother's house for the holidays, he takes his daughter up to his room and introduces her to the Nintendo Entertainment System he had as a kid in the 1980's. As the two begin to play a video game, Jake tells his daughter the story of how he came into possession of the once coveted game system. The film then flashes back to 1988 where young Jake is then played by Winslow Fegley, who along with his group of friends all desire to have a Ninento system for Christmas. The group of kids at the local school all want to play the expensive game system so badly they deal with a local rich kid who is the only one in the immediate area in

possession of the system. Each afternoon the kids gather in front of the rich kids house and wait for him to come out and pick several of them to come inside to play video games. However, once inside, most of the chosen few must just sit and watch him play while he teases them endlessly. Meanwhile, at the Doyle home, Jake is continually dropping hints to his parents, played by Steve Zhan and June Diane Raphael, that he wants the game system for Christmas. For the most part, Jake's wishes fall on deaf ears, but Jake is not one to give up so easily. Jake's sister is even willing to help him in his efforts to get the game system if he agrees to help convince their parents to get her a Cabbage Patch Doll, another hot Christmas toy in 1988, for Christmas. Even though his sister is now helping, all seems lost for Jake's Christmas wishes until his local Boy Scout troop announces the one scout who sells the most Christmas wreaths will win the first prize of...a Nintendo Game System! This announcement sets the scout troop into overdrive to see who can sell the most wreaths. While this is occuring, Jake is still attempting to secure a Cabbage Patch Doll for his sister, as his sister has devised a brilliant way to sell more wreaths. After the Boy Scout contest ends, all does not turn out well as the prize has been changed thanks to the efforts of the father of the rich kid who had the only Nintendo set. One afternoon the rich kid has a meltdown resulting in the destruction of a television and the near death of the family's pet dog. However, Jake is still undeterred and when his friends are together they discover the baseball cards one of their group received are worth quite a bit of money, and they sell the cards

and devise a plan to get a game system during a school trip to Chicago. I will not reveal anymore at this point, less to save all fun of what happens in Chicago during the school trip. The story does flash back and forth between the present day and 1988, and ends on a very surprising and satisfying note for those who have not read the novel. Harrris is perfect for this role, as is the young actor who plays the younger Jake. The supporting cast is great, and you get a

nostalgic feel for the holidays in the 1980's for those who were around then. "8-Bit Christmas" is a fun and heartwarming film of how Christmas is so much more than "things" or getting what we perceive as the desires of our heart. I recommend you add "8-Bit Christmas" to your list of holiday viewing. Now playing on HBO Max. (Rated PG)

I have a confession to make. I haven’t seen a lot of James Cagney movies. This may surprise you, considering what a buff I am of the classic Hollywood era. The truth is that I’m not a huge fan of gangster movies, so outside of some of his latter roles and “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” I’ve never gotten around to much of his catalog. I don’t dislike Cagney either, he was a great actor and one heck of a dancer. So I was most pleased and very impressed last night when I got to see one of his seminal films for the first time. Warner Archive has only two titles coming out this month, and one of them is the blu-ray debut of 1938’s “Angels with Dirty Faces.” Directed by the greatest “unknown” director of all time, Michael Curtiz (who also helmed “Casablanca”). Cagney leads a terrific cast alongside Pat O’Brien, Ann Sheridan, and Humphrey Bogart as a crooked lawyer. The “Dead End” Kids are also in the film, audiences would later come to love them as The Bowery Boys in a series of low-budget comedies made for Monogram pictures. In “Angels,” Cagney plays Rocky

By Andy Ross aross@ theloaferonline.com

Sullivan, a charming gangster who we see in his youth alongside his best friend, Jerry. The two are tough kids and try to heist a bunch of fountain pens from a parked fright train. The two get caught and in the escape, Jerry makes it out and Rocky is arrested and sent to reform school. As time goes on Rocky gets deeper and deeper into gangster life and Jerry takes a completely different path—he becomes a priest. As the youth in Jerry’s parish start to idolize Rocky, this worries the priest. Rocky’s old friend decides he’s going to end his influence on these kids who are so like he and Rocky once were—no matter what the cost. As I said, I’m not much of a gangster film fan, but I loved “Angels with Dirty Faces.” The film is great and holds more than I thought it was taking it strictly off of “poster value.” Cagney gives one of the best performances of his career—he was nominated for an Oscar for the role—one of three nominations the film would get. I’ve talked about Michael Curtiz before in this column, he was perhaps the greatest contract director Warner Brothers, or any other studio, ever had. He helmed many incredible films but it took years and years for him to be viewed as more than just “another contract player.” Warner Archive brings “Angels with Dirty Faces” out to blu-ray in 1080p HD sourced from a brand new 4K scan of the original nitrate negative. We’re lucky anytime a film of this vintage's original negative still exists, the results are truly stunning. The black and white image is clear and sharp, well defined with deep blacks. The shadows of this film are a standout. Arguably, the film looks even better than it did when it was first released. Warner Archive has ported over all the bonus material from the 2005 DVD release of the film. That’s a good thing, as it’s a great collection of features. In the mid-aughts, WB was packing some of their classic Hollywood titles with a feature called “Warner Night at the Movies.” This feature, hosted by the great Leonard Maltin, is designed to
