FROM THE
PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! This will be our last issue for 2021 as we will be celebrating with our families for the holidays. This year has been challenging to say the least! I will never understand why we have to deal with such a nasty virus. So many people have lost their lives this year and it breaks my heart. Just this morning I read about another local young husband and father that lost his battle with covid. Vaccination is an area where I will not voice a public opinion and I will not judge anyone for their decision. I just pray this gets better in 2022. This year with the Loafer has been different. I worked for Kimberly for about 2 years and I took ownership this fall and it is very challenging for me to learn what needs to be done. I could never put this paper out to you weekly without JB Forrester. He does an amazing job making everything look so wonderful. Our advertisers are top notch and I love working with all of them. We are going to spend the next few weeks working on our website and some new ideas for 2022. We appreciate the support from everyone and look forward to new and exciting things next year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
Love, Lisa Durbin Publisher

By [https://EzineArticles.com/ expert/Gordon_North/145625] Gordon North We all know that New Year is a time of celebration, a time to join with family and friends to say goodbye to the problems of the past and welcome the fortunes that the future holds. But have you ever wondered why January 1 marks the beginning of the year? Have you ever thought about why we celebrate in the way that we do? New Years Traditions and Superstitions There are a number of superstitious traditions that began many years ago that have lost their meaning in present day. Typically these traditions were enacted to influence the luck one would have in the coming year. For example, the New Years Eve parties that we all know and love began due to the belief that what one did on the first day of the year could affect their luck. This is why parties go past midnight and into the new year and it also explains why they involve lots of family and friends.
When the clock strikes midnight it’s common for us to kiss our loved ones and make lots of noise to celebrate the beginning of a new year. While most of us just do this without really thinking about it, there is a superstitious reason behind this. Traditionally, people kissed each other to ensure that the relationship lasted for the rest of the year and they made a lot of noise as they believed it would scare the evil spirits away. History of New Years Day The origins of New Years celebrations date back thousands of years. In around 2000BC the Babylonians celebrated the new year over an 11day period. This period did not begin on January 1 as we would expect, it actually started with the first new moon after the first day of spring (also known as the Vernal Equinox). It was not until 153BC that January was declared as the beginning of the year by the Romans. The month was named after Janus the mythical god of beginnings. The calendar year became much more like that used in present day in 46BC when Julius Caesar established the Julian
Calendar. After consultation with an astronomer he matched the calendar year with the movement of the sun and marked January 1 as the start of the new year. New Years Resolutions The popular tradition of making new years resolutions also has origins in Ancient Babylon and Rome. The Babylonians would typically return farm equipment that they had borrowed during the year, while in Caesar’s time Janus became the symbol for resolutions because he had two faces that could look to the past and into the future. Today we make New Years Resolutions to try to improve some aspect of ourselves in the coming year. Popular resolutions include quitting smoking, losing weight and getting out of debt. This sounds good but the sad truth is that most of us break them well before the year is out. In fact, a recent study found that 22% of people give up on their resolution in the first week and by the end of March more than half of New Years resolvers have fallen of the bandwagon. Happy New Year! So what can we do to make sure we achieve our new years resolutions? To be honest I really don’t know,
but I can give you a great head start. Five New Years Eve Ideas For An Enjoying And Relaxing Evening 7
After the hectic Christmas period, full of food, booze and Christmas parties, all you may really feel like doing is sleeping on your sofa snoring away as 12 midnight passes you by on New Year’s Eve. But you can celebrate the New Year, without too much effort, with just you and a few others. So get yourself off that sofa and celebrate the New Year... New Years Idea 1: New Year is the time to clean out the ‘mental’ closet, let go of the past and move on, as well time to make your resolutions for the next year. Get together with a group of friends, colleagues or family members and over a bottle of wine, decide what you need to let go of in the last year and declare the achievements you are proud of. Then as the bottle gets significantly emptier begin to create your list of resolutions for the next year, whether they are career related achievements or a simple declaration of ‘I will not eat an obscene amount of chocolate’. New Years Idea 2: If you prefer to party at New Year, rather than Christmas, why
not ask the boss to schedule the party for New Years rather than Christmas. After all, it’s likely to be more cost effective and you can have much more variation in theme for a New Year’s party. Great themes for New Year’s parties include, going back in time or into the future. Why not celebrate the years that have passed by using a 60’s, 70’s or 80’s party theme? New Years Idea 3: If you don’t want to be the party host this year, attend a New Year’s celebration. New Year’s celebrations are run up and down the UK, but the current most popular event is the Edinburgh Hogmanay festival which runs over 4 days. Fireworks, torchlight processions, famous musicians and the latest up and coming talent from art and literature, will all be there to entertain you.

with your nearest and dearest can often be far more valuable than spending you New Years alone or in a crowd full of people you don’t really know. New Years Idea 5: If intent on spending New Year’s alone at home or with your partner, grab a film, and huddle up on the sofa with a bar of chocolate (or whatever your weakness is). New Year’s need not be a big event for all, as celebrating it in the comfort of your own home can be far more enjoyable for some. Whatever you decide to do, make your New Year an enjoyable and relaxing one. Happy New Year to you all!

I was sitting and talking with my beautiful girlfriend Lorie the other day and it was about the strangest thing, history, that’s right History! I finally found a woman that enjoys history as much as I do. I would not go as far to say as much but a lot. So, on this particular day I was talking about James Monroe. The reason? Well years ago, I took my son to the James Monroe Museum in Fredericksburg VA, a wonderful place for adults and children to experience the life of James Monroe, but I digress. I was going through the trunk of my car, and I found the quill pen I love to write and draw with just lying there. Ready to be found and used to create. This excited me as I have been looking for this for months. And there it was like an old friend waiting to be dipped in the inkwell and put to paper. I love how smooth those pens write. How just the right twist of the wrist can bring a whole new line or dimension to whatever it is I am working on. The rich dark lines, the smooth curves, and the feel of the ink sliding across the paper, it is an experience all its own.
They defended their homes, their lands and of course their country without hesitation, fear, or thought. I am not overly thrilled to say that if the same thing were to take place in our world today the men and women of these powerful descendants would most likely run and hide rather than stand and fight, and I am speaking from politicians all the way down the line. Back then, men and women knew what parts they needed to play to help build and sustain our great country. There was no confusion, no questioning. Everyone did their part, and a country was created. I am sad to say if the same circumstance were to happen in our time, we would probably be speaking another language in a matter of a couple of years.
and comfortable seating. As I was watching others file in and take their seats, I was wondering if they were as thrilled as I was. As we were waiting for the performance to begin, I could barely contain the joy I felt. I am sure I was smiling from ear to ear. Finally, the lights dropped, the curtain opened, and we were taken on a beautiful journey back to Germany in the late 1800’s to the home of Dr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum. Their daughter Clara was presented with a Christmas gift from her godfather, a beautiful but unusual nutcracker doll. Through the lovely art of ballet, the story began to unfold.
The backdrops were amazing. The costumes were beautiful. And the way they interpreted the story was If you have not done it yet I would love breathtaking. Last month my sweetheart, Tim, surprised me with tickets to see The Nutcracker in December, performed by the Kingsport Ballet. What a great Christmas present! I could hardly contain my excitement as the date of the performance approached. Finally, the night had arrived. We put on our best attire and drove to the Wellmont Performing Arts Center. I could feel the excitement building inside me as we were walking to our seats. I felt like a small child giddy with anticipation of what the night would bring. I love seeing the Nutcracker performed. I love everything about it. The theater was very nice with spacious
Wonderful Counselor, Might God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 Not only is Jesus a wonderful gift but He also brought an equally amazing gift with Him: the gift of salvation. “And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 Jesus did not come to earth as the King He is, but as a tiny helpless baby that stayed in the same place where the animals lived. “She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.” Luke 2:7 So, as you celebrate this wonderful time of the year, remember to make room in your heart for the real reason we celebrate at this time. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 All of us here at the paper would like to wish you and your family a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. Is there any sound more festive than the POP! FIZZ! opening of a bottle of sparkling wine? We all know New Year’s Eve wouldn’t be complete without a “champagne” toast at midnight. But just how much of what you’re drinking can really be considered Champagne? If you’re like the vast majority of most Americans, you probably lump all sparkling wines under the category of Champagne for ease of use, but the truth is there are TONS of bubbled beverages out there and only certain ones can actually be labeled with the term Champagne. Allow me to be your spirits guide for this holiday season and give you a small introduction to the world of fizz.

Because of this process, a traditional champagne is going to have creamy notes of biscuits and butter in addition to the crisp flinty fruit that comes from the chalky soils of the region. ETSU Health’s Family Medicine Bristol clinic is providing even more health care to low-income and uninsured individuals through a partnership with Healing Hands Health Center. Healing Hands, located at 245 Midway Medical Park, is a charitable medical and dental clinic that provides care to adults in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. East Tennessee State University has partnered with the clinic for 17 years during Free Medical Health Fairs and for nearly two decades through dental hygiene clinic rotations. In August, ETSU Health’s Family Medicine Bristol clinic expanded the partnership, sending providers to Healing Hands each Wednesday. Healing Hands Executive Director Helen Scott said the partnership allows them to serve more individuals in need. “Our partnership with ETSU Health Family Medicine is such a blessing,” said Helen Scott, executive director
for Healing Hands. “Most of our medical patients come to us with many chronic conditions, including diabetes and hypertension. ETSU providers educate the patients and help get the chronic conditions under control, which keeps our patients out of the ER, allows them to keep working and helps them live healthier lives.” Family Medicine’s Director of Rural and Community Programs, Dr. Amanda Stoltz, was instrumental in building the partnership. She described it as a natural fit to ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine’s mission to provide community-focused medical education and to improve the health in rural southern Appalachia.
the partnership benefits providers as well. “It provides fantastic learning for our residents to know how to care for people without having to navigate the frustrations of insurance, and to be able to provide quality care for folks that need it,” Helmly said. “Healing Hands does amazing work for our community. We continue to expand
“It is my goal that this partnership will encourage our family medicine residents to include charitable care as a part of their future practices,” Stoltz said. Family Medicine Bristol’s Program Director, Dr. Laura Helmly, said that

The new film "Red Notice" contains the star power of Dwayne Johnson ("Black Adam"), Ryan Reynolds ("Deadpool") and Gal Gadot ("Wonder Woman"), and their combined wattage practically melts the screen. The film was supposed to be released by Universal, but was purchased by Netflix, and began streaming on November 12th to a tremendous response from viewers. The story reveals how two thousand years ago Cleopatra was gifted with three jeweled eggs as a wedding gift. The eggs were lost over time, but two of them were found in 1907, however the third remains missing. Enter Special Agent John Hartley (Johnson) who is sent to a museum in Rome to investigate the theft of the egg that has been on display at the museum. While at the museum, Harley reveals the egg on display is a forgery and discovers the thief, international art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) is standing nearby and attempts to flee. Booth is captured by Hartley and is taken into custody. While the real egg is being transported, another international art thief, Sarah Black AKA "The Bishop", steals

the egg during the transport. Meanwhile, Hartley discovers he has been blackmailed and is arrested for being part of the theft of the egg. Thus, Hartley and Booth find themselves incarcerated at the same remote prison in Russia. While at the prison, the two are confronted by Black who suggests they all work together to find the third egg. The duo decline her offer, but eventually manage an exciting escape from the prison involving explosives and a helicopter. The two men have made the decision to work together and head to Valencia, Spain to get the second egg before Black. While attending a masquerade ball at a mansion in Valencia the duo once again encounter Black who is also in the mansion to collect the egg. The trio have a knock down drag out fight in the mansion, which eventually ends with a surprising twist. At this point, Black has the upper hand, and tourtes Hartley in an attempt to get Booth to reveal the location of the third egg, of which only he knows the location. After tricking Black, the duo find themselves in Argentina where the third egg is located. While the duo find a massive treasure trove of artifacts, they are convinced they have eluded Black, but like any good international thief, she shows up. At this point in the story, the trio decide to team up in order to elude the authorities, who have also tracked the location of the missing egg. When the trio escape the underground bunker containing the treasures and the pursuing authorities, the story features yet another surprising twist I certainly didn't see coming. Eventually the film ends with the trio making a surprising decision, which could certainly lead to a sequel. I was impressed with
how the actors interacted, and they have wonderful onscreen chemistry. I love how Johnson plays the fall guy to Reynolds wise cracking smart aleck. Meanwhile, Gadot again displays why she makes such an amazing Wonder Woman, showing her skills with a spear (yes she uses one during a fight), and elegant outfits. There are also many great lines of dialogue in the film, one of which has Reynolds describing Johnson as a "wall". The film is fast moving and wastes no time in
getting into action mode, which is great for this genre of film. I really hope there is a sequel to this film, as a film series could be spawned. "Red Notice" is a breezy and fun action/comedy which is a delight for fans of the actors involved, and became the most watched movie on Netflix. (Rated PG-13)

When The Criterion Collection, those crafters some of the finest home video editions of the best movies ever made—going on for almost 40 years now--announced a few months back they would debut their first-ever titles on 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray by year’s end, there was much celebration. Most of the titles Criterion would debut in 4K were titles they had previously released on blu-ray over the last few years.

In 4K the breathtaking Technicolor of “The Red Shoes” is one of the most visually stunning experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure to have. Screenshots alone will not do this one justice, it must be experienced. It is, to use a metaphor as if Technicolor seen in an MGM musical chugged a Mountain Dew then did an extreme ski slope. The blues are staggering rich and saturated, as are the darker parts of the frame. When the film ended I sat there, stunned, and delighted by what I had just watched.
Criterion’s 4K UHD release of “The Red Shoes” is a combo edition packed with the 4K disc and their regular Blu-Ray edition of the film. The UHD disc is devoted to having only the film and its audio supplements alongside. This includes Criterion’s original commentary track prepared for that 1995 laserdisc release—which features Martin Scorsese, film scholar Ian Christie, and actors Maris Goring and Mora Shearer. Actor Jeromy Irons appears in the second track reading excerpts from Powell and Pressburger’s 1978 novelization of the film and excerpts from the original Andersen tale. The blu-ray disc is the standard edition that Criterion has had out before this release, the full film is on that disc is in 1080p and it’s where the bulk of the extra features are. These included a 2000 documentary on the making of the
film, an interview with Powell’s widow, Thelma Schoonmaker Powell, from the 2009 Cannes film festival. Publicity stills, behind-thescenes photos, and a tour of Martin Scorsese’s collection of memorabilia from the film. There’s also “The Red Shoes Sketches” a 1948 animated film of painted storyboards made for the film. This 4K UHD edition of “The Red Shoes” is an improvement over Criterion’s original blu-ray disc. The colors are stunning, and fans of this film who have the equipment to view it in 4K must pick up this disc. I can’t recall the last time I felt so “knocked to the ground” after watching a movie. This was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to see what else Criterion brings to 4K in the new year. Until next time, see you next week.
