NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! Happy New Year!!! 2022 is here. Another year around the Sun. I hope everyone is happy and healthy. I know this virus is taking a toll on so many people and I really hate to hear about the deaths in our community and around the world. I pray this gets better for everyone. We are going to do all we can to make the Loafer even better for you this year in print and online. I am so thankful we are able to keep bringing it to you each week and I really appreciate every single reader and advertiser. If there is anything we can do to help you build your business, please let us know. Social media has become a huge part of building any type of business but it does take time to maintain. That is a service we can offer you so please let us know if you would like to discuss a plan with us. We are featuring The Haven of Mercy on the banner of our cover. I met with Pastor Rockley and they really are doing a lot to help the homeless and the addicted in our community. I feel like so many of us judge the homeless because there are jobs available but during my visit there my eyes and mind were opened to see some of the reasons these folks are having a hard time. I personally and with our business here plan to do what I can to help out this year with the good work they are doing at the Haven of Mercy. Thank you again and Happy New Year to everyone!

Love, Lisa Durbin Publisher

Oh Hi!!! My name is Griffith. I love attention, being pampered and held, some toy mouse hunting every now and then. The family where I used to live had a human baby and it was all too much stress for me. I don’t blame them, they tried everything, but I was a bit too sensitive

about all the changes. I’m fine here now, with new people and the cats around at the rescue, but I’d love someone who could give me more attention and love. Will you take me home with you? I’ve been neutered and I’m up to date on my vaccinations.

R yd er Wow, what a handsome boy Ryder is !!! He is a pure bred German Shepherd and weighs 68 lbs. Ryder knows basic commands and is

house broken. He has been neutered and is up to date on vaccinations. A fenced in yard and an experienced breed adopter is required.

The McGlothlin Foundation’s Gift to William King Museum of Art

theloaferonline.com January 11, 2021

William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, VA, is pleased to announce a pledged gift of $500,000 from The McGlothlin Foundation, which will be paid over five years. James W. McGlothlin acknowledged “the museum’s tremendous growth and progress” in his intention that this gift be used to en sure the museum’s continuing commitment to top-quality exhibitions. Visit williamkingmuseum.org to learn more about the museum and its mission. The McGlothlin Foundation was funded by Woodrow W. McGlothlin in 1998. The Foundation offers its assistance to those who wish to maintain the beauty of their surroundings, improve the health of all peoples and prepare mankind to live in a more civil and peaceful environment, through aid to higher education, healthcare, and the arts. Betsy K. White, Director, expressed the museum’s appreciation for this important gift that recognizes the museum’s longstanding priority of

providing access to significant works of art. “Jim Mc Glothlin is a founding patron of our museum, providing gifts that established the museum’s first galleries during the 1990s and continuing his support over the years. We are deeply grateful for this new gift, the capstone of his generosity and endorsement of the museum’s role in the region. It will provide a sustaining foundation of support for our annual exhibition program.” William King Museum of Art presents 8-10 exhibitions annually. Through the generous support of The McGloth lin Foundation, WKMA can continue its mission to provide arts education to the public, exhibit fine art that is accessible for all, and preserve the region’s cultural heritage. William King Museum of Art is open seven days a week with free admission for all. Visit williamkingmuseum.org or call (276) 628-5005 to learn more about exhibitions and programming.

It’s a wild world out there for single people these days. The landscape of the dating scene for women in their 30s and beyond could most accurately be portrayed in the film Mad Max: Road Warrior- a lone warrior trekking across a desert wasteland, periodically fending off attacks from feral men with gas and an unhealthy leather fetish. Is there even any point in trying now?

Human connection leads to empathy and growth, and when you’re ruling people out because they don’t fit into whatever imaginary box of baselevel must-haves you’ve built in your mind, you could be missing out on a healthy relationship. You’re all batting WAY out of your league! You should have to lower your standards as much as I have! The fakeness of social media has afforded men a false sense of entitlement that they deserve to be

paired with a Megan Fox, when none of them are winning any beauty pageants or IQ awards from MIT. Instead of going through the trouble of working on themselves or searching for deep connection on a mental/spiritual/ physical level with a ‘real’ person, it’s easier to hide behind the phone and pay $9.99 a month for mindless conversation with their favorite InstaModel, plus the added bonus of a few strategically posed nudes to curb any physical cravings. If you’re dating past 30 in particular the pool gets increasingly more shallow. Gone is the wide-eyed naivety of our 20s; most of us now have the baggage of failed relationships, children and our own traumatic experiences to contend with in addition to just seeking another person who likes our favorite foods and Sunday marathons of ‘The Office.’ My personal dating age parameters are set from 38 to casket, but it doesn’t seem to matter what age a man is, as the immaturity has no limits in that regard. Also, I’ll never knock another female’s hustle, but now that being a ‘sugar baby’ or having an OnlyFans is so widely accepted, I have to compete with 21-year-olds who wouldn’t ordinarily give these old coots the time of day. Men have realized if they spend enough cash, they can surround themselves with plenty of hot young things that will keep them on their toes and they can brag about to their buddies on the golf course. I happen to think I’m fairly young and attractive but now even I feel compelled to lie about my age online because men in their 40s, 50s and 60s only want women 18-32. It’s infuriating. For all my griping, I’ve come to the sad realization that I might also have a little something to do with my dating woes. I’m wild, like a feral cat. I want attention only when and how I want it, and if you show me too much attention I’ll run away. I’ve got a really low tolerance for BS and small talk, and I am quick to just cut people off as soon as I see it’s not a match, which isn’t entirely fair to leave someone wondering what went wrong with zero explanation. I’m as

immature as the men I complain about, and while I crave intimacy, the thought of having someone in my personal space or disrupting my schedule makes my skin crawl. I’m extremely guarded and unaffectionate because I don’t want to get burned by caring too much and being hurt again, which is what pushes me toward people who don’t treat me well. If you already know up front you’re going to be used, ignored and cheated on, it doesn’t hurt when the inevitable comes to light. That isn’t a healthy mindset but it’s the one that has grown from my experiences and one that I’m working toward repairing. I feel as though I could really spiral on the subject of romance in the modern era but for today this is a good stopping point. If you’re single and putting yourself out there, godspeed. It’s brutal, and I’m right here fighting the good fight with you. All of us are doing our best, trying to survive the lonely nights and live as pessimistically optimistic as possible. For me, it’s an ongoing uphill battle that might never be won.

The current film "The Hand of God" is an Italian produced film and has subtitles, so if you have an issue with words on the screen, then I suggest you skip this drama. However, if you want to see a film set in the 1980's and featuring beautiful Naples, Italy, then take a chance on this one. I must confess subtitles can often be distracting, and unless you speak Italian you really can't look away from the screen for very long. Subtitles aside, the film is the story of a young man named Fabietto Schisa (Filippo Scotti, known as Italy's Timothee Chalamet), who lives with his parents and brother Marchino (Marlon Joubert) in beautiful Naples. Fabietto lives a rather quiet life and struggles at school due to having few friends, but follows his favorite soccer player Diego Maradona, and later plans to study philosophy in college. There is a bit of drama in the Schisa household, due to dealing with a couple of neighbors who are not the type one would want to live near, and marital issues between Fabietto's parents. Fabietto does get to

attend acting auditions with his brother Marchino, who hopes to become a famous actor. The brothers, especially Fabietto, have great affection for their emotionally troubled aunt Patrizia (Luisa Renieri). In fact, it appears Patrizia's favorite family member is Fabietto. The extended family squabbles often in the expected Italian way, but deep down you know they really care for one another. The fact the family really cares for each other really hits home when a tragedy hits the Schisa household, just after Fabietto's parents have made up and are finally at peace in their marriage. *Spoiler alert* After Fabietto's parents perish in a shocking accident, the two brothers are left orphans and need to determine what to do with their lives. Fabietto has always had the desire to be a filmmaker, as he has a deep love for cinema, while Marchino seems to want to party the summer away. During his time around Naples, Fabietto runs into one of his favorite filmmakers who at first treats the curious young man with disdain, but later encourages him to let nothing hold him back. Our new orphan also meets and begins to hang out with a guy who becomes his best friend, but is not good for our lad, as the new friend is a smuggler, but Fabietto is just happy to have a friend. Fabietto soon realizes in order to make his dreams come true, he must make plans to head to Rome. Prior to his departure for Rome, he has a heartwarming goodbye with his brother, who encourages his brother to pursue his dreams. The film

ends with Fabietto leaving for Rome on a train, and may leave you wondering what happens to him. I suppose we can just make up our own story from this point forward. This film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival, is not everyone's "cup of tea", and can be jarring at times, but kept my attention throughout. The actors are all effective, and I can see why

Scotti is compared to "Dune" star Chalamet, as he also has a broody tone to his looks and acting. If you can get past the subtitles, then I suggest viewing "The Hand of God", which is described as a "love letter to Naples". Now playing on Netflix. (Rated R)

My favorite is their “Cabinet of Curiosities” line. All of Numero’s titles have wonderful art direction, but the Cabinet of Curiosities titles take it to a higher degree than most labels. Around the start of the pandemic, I picked up “Whispers Lounge.” In the mid-90s there was a huge revival of mid-century American easy listening and adult pop music, call now called “Lounge.” But it didn’t go beyond the 1960s. “Whispers” looks at lounge music of the 1970s, performed by regional acts who mostly worked the cocktail rooms of chain hotels all across America. The LP itself is packaged in an oversized matchbook, not just something that looks like a matchbook, something that actually opens like a matchbook. Flap, Staple at the bottom, and striking strip on the back. The record itself is housed in an inner sleeve that looks like a row of matches waiting to be plucked, then it comes with a mini-poster that has hundreds of real, vintage matchbooks. The title I saw in Bristol that caught my eye is one of the latest releases in the Curiosities line. “NuLeaf” is packaged to look like a pack of cigarettes you might find someone smoking for pleasure in 1986. There’s a seal at the top of the package you have to break, and inside the inner sleeve looks like a row of cigarettes. To add to the retro vibe of the packaging, a onesheet flyer of items you can get with your “Leaf points” is included. This flyer also doubles as a scratch and sniff card. The scent? Menthol. The music itself is a collection of 1980s underground smooth jazz. 10 years ago I would have winced a

bit at the idea of listening to such a thing, and yet, with Numero’s ace curations and unique packing, it’s one of the most chill and relaxing records I’ve heard in a very long time. This is one of the secret bits of brilliance that Numero does with The Cabinet of Curiosities. They make records of music that’s worth listening to in genres you might not think to explore, yet they also double as sort of audible vacations.

record. It’s very clever. The most recent release takes things put to the 90s with “Numero ’95” which explores pioneers of computergenerated music. Appropriately, the packaging for that is like a giant floppy disc you’d find on your desk in 1995.

Since things every day feel increasingly disheartening, I take some comfort in knowing there are creative music lovers out there You listen to the music on “NuLeaf” making collections like this. I’ll keep buying them as long as they and you think “Yes, this should be packaged like a cigarette pack keep making them. Check out a Numero title and see if you don’t from 1986.” The whole thing promises a life of smooth relaxing find yourself enjoying an audible vacation in your own mind. It’s leisure that perhaps never really weird, it’s wonderful, and it makes existed except in the dreams of those who made the music on the me happy. See you next week. .
