Hello Loafer Readers! How is January going for everyone? Are you working on your resolutions? I normally don’t have a list but this year I did write some things down to remind myself what I need to be doing every day. I have yet to get through the whole list in a day but I am a work in progress. What is on your list? Diet, exercise, praying or financial issues. I hope you excel in whatever you do in 2022. Let’s remember the retailers are probably struggling a bit now that the holidays have passed. Try to support your local businesses when you do need something instead of buying everything online. Shopping local is good for everyone. Thank you for your continued support of The Loafer. Feel free to call or message us if we can do anything to help you promote your business, music or event or anything you think we should know. Have a great week!

Love, Lisa Durbin Publisher

The McGlothlin Exhibition Series at William King Museum of Art presents “Lift Your Spirits: Nurturing the Human Spirit Through Creativity,” on display at William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, VA, February 3, 2022 - May 29, 2022. Learn more about the exhibit at williamkingmuseum. org. This group exhibition celebrates the cathartic effect and the power that creativity can have on us when we engage in it and allow our selves to be creative. It has been proven that engaging in creative activities nourishes the human spirit; this varies from artist to artist and is also applied to collectors. This exhibition investigates several questions. Why do we create? Why are we drawn to art enough to construct it and collect it? In what ways does art aid us in our own catharsis? Surrounded by thousands of hand cut butterflies, visitors will experi ence the fully immersive and calming installation

of Christina Laurel’s work Refugium. A refugium is a specific environment in which a spe cies can survive, whereas outside this environment it cannot. Laurel notes, “Key to our survival is refuge within an oasis of calm, a counter balance to the sensory bombardment of our daily lives.” Refugium is intended to be such an oasis. Charles Clary also uses hand cut paper to explore emotion by chan neling grief into conceptual, and meticulous, works of art. His elegant ly framed works entice the viewer with childhood memories of walls adorned with family photos, and yet the sculptural worlds that emerge and recede in each frame, tell a different story. One collector’s acquisition of Haitian Drapo Art Flags honors the spir its and beliefs of the individual artists themselves, all the while instill ing a sense of hope, protection, and esoteric divinity. The narratives within each beaded flag offer a coalescence of religious tradition

and contemporary art practice. Deeply inspired by the masters, Demond Melacon works solely with needle and thread to sew glass beads onto canvas. He has developed a contemporary art practice using the same beading techniques he’s applied over the past 28 years as a Black Masker. Melancon’s work is used as a tool to mine topics such as stereotypical representations of Black identity. His work reflects his interest in storytelling and redefin ing the notions of portraiture. Art has the power to connect us, inspire us, and heal us, whether you make it, enjoy it, or collect

it. Art can offer moments of respite, aid us in confronting trauma, give us a sense of hope, and provide us an avenue for catharsis. Experience “Lift Your Spirits: Nurturing the Human Spirit Through Creativity” February 3 - May 29, 2022. Want a closer look at the exhi bition? Join us for Tours at Two, a FREE curator led tour of the exhi bition, on Sunday March 20, at 2:00PM. Call Anna Buchanan at (276) 628-5005 ext.106 to reserve your spot. Entries Sought for Lonesome Pine Short-Story and Poetry Contests The MECC Foundation is pleased to announce the 46th annual John Fox, Jr. Literary Festival, a free virtual event featuring Beth Macy, renowned New York Times bestselling author, and executive producer of Hulu’s Dopesick, on Wednesday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. In coordination with the festival event, the MECC Foundation will host the 35th Annual Lonesome Pine Short Story Contest and the 18th Annual Lonesome Pine Poetry Contest. The deadline for submitting entries is Wednesday, February 16 at 4:30 p.m. Entry categories include adult, high school (grades 9 through 12), and middle school (grades 5 through 8) categories. Contest rules are available on the MECC Foundation website at www.mecc.edu/jffestival/ rules. Winners of the contest will be announced during the Literary Festival Event. All winners will receive a cash prize. The virtual festival will feature a discussion with Virginia author Beth Macy. Macy is the author of the critically

acclaimed and New York Timesbestselling books, Factory Man, Truevine, and Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America (2018). Macy serves as an Executive Producer and writer on the acclaimed Hulu limited television series Dopesick, which is based on her book. All local middle and high schools are invited to participate in this virtual event at no cost. Students and community members are invited to submit questions for Macy at www.mecc.edu/jffestival22. Growing out of three decades of reporting from the same Virginia communities, as her prior books did, Dopesick unpacks the most intractable social problems of our time: the opioid crisis, set against a landscape of job loss, corporate greed and stigma, along with the families and first responders who are heroically fighting back. Overdose deaths are now the equivalent of a jetliner crashing in our country every day, and yet the government response to the epidemic remains, in a word, impotent. Dopesick is, in many ways, the sequel to Macy’s first book, FACTORY MAN. It lays out exactly how the jobless “other America” ended up couch-surfing with

the likes of surgeon’s daughters and civic leaders’ kids who fall prey to prostitution, jail, and even death. Tom Hanks describes Dopesick as “a deep — and deeply needed — look into the troubled soul of America.” Stanford addiction medicine specialist and author Dr. Anna Lembke calls it the first book to capture the entirety of the epidemic, “with a fast-paced narrative, colorful and inspiring characters, vivid historical detail, and a profound sense of place.”

Her book, Raising Lazarus, Hope, Justice, and the Future of America’s Drug Crisis (August 2022), focuses on solutions to the opioid crisis and the heroic efforts of frontline workers applying harm reduction practices on the streets of America. It also will document the efforts of the Sackler family to avoid responsibility for the crisis they helped create. For more information on the MECC Foundation, please visit our website at www.meccfoundation.org.

A longtime reporter who specializes in outsiders and underdogs, Macy has won more than a dozen national journalism awards, including a Lukas Prize for Factory Man, multiple shortlist and best-book-ofthe-year honors for Truevine, and a Nieman Fellowship for Journalism at Harvard for her newspaper writing. A frequent speaker, teacher and essayist, Macy has been published in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Oprah magazine, and Parade. Her approach to storytelling: Report from the ground up, establish trust, be patient, find stories that tap into universal truths. Get out of your ZIP code. To do good journalism, be a human first.

ETSU to Host Miranda Lambert in Upcoming SGA Spring Concert East Tennessee State University will host Miranda Lambert during the Student Government Association’s (SGA) Spring 2022 Concert on Friday, April 29, at the William B. Greene Jr. Stadium. The award-winning performer is one of the most well-known country music artists of the 21st century. She received the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her 2010 song titled, “The House That Built Me.” Lambert received a second Grammy Award for Best Country Album thanks to her 2014 album titled “Platinum,” and a third for her 2020 album, “Wildcard.” This will be the first concert held at the William B. Greene Jr. Stadium, and it is anticipated to be the largest attended concert event in the history of ETSU’s campus. “Words cannot describe my excitement about the first-ever SGA concert in the football stadium and with a legend like Miranda Lambert to top it off,” said SGA President Mason Mosier. “This administration

promised to usher in a ‘Golden Era’ at ETSU, and I can say with confidence that this yet again proves the Bucs are back and better than ever.” Lambert’s team comes to Johnson City as one of its three April concerts before finally reuniting with country music group Little Big Town for the Bandwagon Tour in May. American southern rock band The Cadillac Three will be the opener at the ETSU campus event. Gates to the event will open at 6:30 p.m. with the event beginning at 7:30 p.m. Students will receive one free ticket with proof of student identification. Tickets will go on sale in February, and ticket prices are to be determined. More information will be posted to etsu.edu/concerts as it becomes available. For more immediate information, contact Carter Warden at wardence1@etsu.edu or call 423-439-8474.

We install within 7-10 business days after template. Family owned and operated. 100’s of colors available.

I have worked hard for those 51 years. I have had a wonderful life and accomplishments that I am proud of. But why, in the past, did I dread my birthday? I guess no one wants to think of themselves as getting older. Maybe because I felt like I should have accomplished more by that age than I did. Maybe because life seems so short. I really don’t have a reason for the dread because my birthdays have always been wonderful. My family and friends constantly made sure my birthdays were special. Ponderings to Ponder

timsimpson2008 @gmail.com

When I was turning 9, we had several feet of snow. We lived in the county and back then they didn’t treat the back country

roads with scraping and salt. My mom couldn’t “get to town” as she would call it to buy me a present. So instead, she wrote in a birthday card and put money in it. She said as soon as the roads were clear, we would go to town and let me pick out a Barbie doll for my birthday and we would “have a big time”. My mom always knew how to make me feel better. One birthday (I wish I could remember what age it was) my daddy made me a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. He made both the cake and icing from scratch. That was the best birthday cake I ever tasted or will ever taste. I also remember when I was a little girl, my sister took a poster board and folded it in half to make the world’s biggest birthday card ever. On it, she drew pictures for

me to color and created games on it for me to figure out. I was so thrilled with it. So, ladies, if you are half a century old like me, don’t dread the next birthday. God still has a purpose for me and for you while we are here. Again, I am embracing 51. I am very thankful and grateful to be turning another year older. And I can’t wait to see what this year holds. The world has been an interesting place lately. Between politics and a pandemic, news feeds have been filled with negativity. It seems hard to find a positive mentality in all the madness.

Is there anything more wonderful than the carefree, blissful ignorance of childhood? I can hardly fathom a greater existence at the moment than being completely untethered from financial woes, jobs and basically any and all responsibility. It truly saddens me that I spent the majority of those gifted years wishing I was a grown-up. The older I get, the more I’m realizing youth truly is wasted on the young.

spending down the rabbit hole.

So my first step in reverse aging is pretty drastic-this week I’m installing a landline phone. I’ve leaned on the “I need to always be available in case of parental emergency” excuse for always having a phone in hand for far too long and it’s ridiculous. If I’m not home, the majority of time I’m at work. If there is an emergency, contact me there. Of course I’m not totally doing away with my iPhone; that seems a bit ludicrous and unrealistic in current times. Lucky for me, one of the perceived benefits of adulthood is But I’m setting up screentime freedom of choice; I can actively limits (intended probably for children) to a fraction of the time choose to reverse the course of I’m currently spending on social my life and begin simplifying media and keeping my phone set my existence to resemble those to airplane mode so I can only use days of yesteryear as closely as possible. Which is precisely what it for the camera, podcasts and music the majority of my time I’m doing. unless I’m in travel. After turning on the screentime Let’s face it- the constant 2 monitoring function on my iPhone a few weeks ago I received sentence texts, back and forth of memes, and ‘liking’ posts gives a huge wakeup call as to just how over-connected, dependent us a sense of connection but it’s and addicted I’ve become to this not! I want real relationships. I want conversations and sharing rectangle in my pocket. What of ideas and debate; that’s what started out innocently enough is lacking in my life and a lot of as a tool of convenience and the reason I feel sort of empty. older who didn’t grow up with the trappings of the internet, our lives were driven by exploration and curiosity. As an adult and falling into the mundane minutiae of work, bills and responsibility, that wonder and drive to experience the unexplored fades away. I want out of the “grind”; I no longer want to be a slave to email and text and unfulfilling jobs. I want my short time on this planet to be spent with the excitement that everything held for me as a kid. As much as I love my Botox and Juvederm, I think THAT is the true fountain of youth. It might not be realistic for everyone, but I hope you’ll all join me in some While the phone is a major part capacity in realizing there’s more of this age regression focus, I also to life than tethering ourselves to want to encompass a lot of the stress and take some backward simple joys of childhood. As an adult, I would like to translate that into throwing myself into things I’m so passionate about that everything else that everything falls to the wayside, even forgetting to eat! When I was young I never had to monitor my calories and weight because I just listened to my body and ate when I was hungry, which is the total opposite of my adult habits of grazing out of boredom or organizing my social life around food and alcohol. The new film "Red Notice" contains the star power of Dwayne Johnson ("Black Adam"), Ryan Reynolds ("Deadpool") and Gal Gadot ("Wonder Woman"), and their combined wattage practically melts the screen. The film was supposed to be released by Universal, but was purchased by Netflix, and began streaming on November 12th to a tremendous response from viewers. The story reveals how two thousand years ago Cleopatra was gifted with three jeweled eggs as a wedding gift. The eggs were lost over time, but two of them were found in 1907, however the third remains missing. Enter Special Agent John Hartley (Johnson) who is sent to a museum in Rome to investigate the theft of the egg that has been on display at the museum. While at the museum, Harley reveals the egg on display is a forgery and discovers the thief, international art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) is standing nearby and attempts to flee. Booth is captured by Hartley and is taken into custody. While the real egg is being transported, another international art thief, Sarah Black AKA "The Bishop", steals the egg during the

transport. Meanwhile, Hartley discovers he has been blackmailed and is arrested for being part of the theft of the egg. Thus, Hartley and Booth find themselves incarcerated at the same remote prison in Russia. While at the prison, the two are confronted by Black who suggests they all work together to find the third egg. The duo decline her offer, but eventually manage an exciting escape from the prison involving explosives and a helicopter. The two men have made the decision to work together and head to Valencia, Spain to get the second egg before Black. While attending a masquerade ball at a mansion in Valencia the duo once again encounter Black who is also in the mansion to collect the egg. The trio have a knock down drag out fight in the mansion, which eventually ends with a surprising twist. At this point, Black has the upper hand, and tourtes Hartley in an attempt to get Booth to reveal the location of the third egg, of which only he knows the location. After tricking Black, the duo find themselves in Argentina where the third egg is located. While the duo find a massive treasure trove of artifacts, they are convinced they have eluded Black, but like any good international thief, she shows up. At this point in the story, the trio decide to team up in order to elude the authorities, who have also tracked the location of the missing egg. When the trio escape the underground bunker containing the treasures and the pursuing authorities, the story features yet another surprising twist I certainly didn't see coming. Eventually the film ends with the trio making a surprising decision, which could certainly lead to a sequel. I was impressed with how the actors interacted, and they have wonderful onscreen

chemistry. I love how Johnson plays the fall guy to Reynolds wise cracking smart aleck. Meanwhile, Gadot again displays why she makes such an amazing Wonder Woman, showing her skills with a spear (yes she uses one during a fight), and elegant outfits. There are also many great lines of dialogue in the film, one of which has Reynolds describing Johnson as a "wall". The film is fast moving and wastes no time in getting into

action mode, which is great for this genre of film. I really hope there is a sequel to this film, as a film series could be spawned. "Red Notice" is a breezy and fun action/comedy which is a delight for fans of the actors involved, and became the most watched movie on Netflix. (Rated PG-13)
