Planning for the sixth annual Tennessee Pirate Fest is underway. This family-friendly event will spring to life the last two weekends in May, including Memorial Day. The rustic outdoor event site is located in Harriman, about 30 miles west of Turkey Creek. All are invited to escape to the pirate haven of Barataria, south of New Orleans, circa 1814. “Our storyline is based on The Buccaneer, a 1958 movie starring Yul Brynner,” said Barrie Paulson, VP/Director. “Pirate Captain Jean Lafitte, King of Barataria, is showing his French hospitality by hosting a grand festival, as he devises a plan to survive the War of 1812. Come see British red coats, New Orleans socialites, and ‘good’ and bad pirates all in one place. Enjoy hours of family fun and Get Yer Pirate On!” Eight acres of interactive entertainment will include comedy and musical stage shows; costumed street characters; craft, food, and beverage vendors; and a variety of games. Activities will include mermaid photo opportunities, patron costume contests, pirate recruiting gong shows, pirate
school, pirate Olympics, and the Trail of Doom. Auditions for local street characters will be held by scheduled video appointment on Saturday, February 12, from 2-5pm ET; or by special arrangement. Friendly adults with theatrical and hospitality experience are encouraged to audition. Mature and talented teens will be considered if they have transportation or will be accompanied by a participating adult. The audition consists of speaking in a British, French, and/ or pirate accent; singing a short song; and reading from scripts posted on the website. Wearing a costume to audition is optional. First call backs are scheduled by video appointment on February 19. Final call backs are planned to be in-person on February 26. Weekly Saturday rehearsals will be held from March 5 to May 14 in Kingston and Harriman. Being cast as a street character is primarily a learning and performance opportunity, but some other consideration might be available. To apply, please visit the website : tmfaire.com/auditions/.
Photos by Rob Welton Most of the professional stage acts have been cast. But for future consideration, acts are encouraged to email their show details with a video link to DarkhorseLLC@comcast.net. Festival organizers are also seeking quality craft and food vendors to create the merchant village of Barataria. Vendor information, application, and guidelines are available on the website https://tmfaire.com/ vendors/. The application deadline is April 2. There is no application fee, but all work is juried to ensure quality and fit. Payment of $40/day for crafts and $80/day for food vendors if paying by check for 12’ selling frontage would be due after approval by April 22. If
paying by credit, there is a small convenience fee. Food trucks with rustic or pirate themed décor are welcome to apply. The Tennessee Pirate Fest is planned for May 21-22, 28-2930, 2022, from 11a-6p ET, at 550 Fiske Road, Harriman, TN. Festival organizers are staying abreast of health regulations regarding Covid-19, and safety protocols will be in place as needed. Johnson City Jazz Festival Coming Up March 11-12 The 4th annual Johnson City Jazz Festival, a 2 day celebration of live jazz music with 4 stellar bands from throughout the Southeast playing a variety of jazz styles, is scheduled for March 11-12, 2022 at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City. Steve Scheu, one of the organizers of the Festival, noted. “After taking 2 years off, we are very excited to bring this great music genre back to the Carnegie and the region. We have heard from many fans that they have very much missed this event. We can’t wait for the Festival to get back on track!” Bill Perkins, a local jazz guitarist and the person responsible for organizing the performing musicians, noted the he is very excited to be back at the Carnegie. “This down time has been a very difficult time for musicians who want to perform together and for fans who want to experience great live music. We are thrilled all involved in the Festival are gearing up for a great event in early March and hope everyone comes out to hear and support these very talented musicians.”
Performers include trombonist Rick Simerly, jazz vocalist Lenora Helm Hammonds, saxophonist Zoh Amba, and drummer Kenneth Brown. Organizers have worked to make the festival very affordable. The cost for Friday and Saturday is $20 for each night, or $30 for both nights. Carnegie Hotel, a major sponsor, is the location for all shows, which run 8:00 pm –11:00 pm each night. There is a special room rate for staying at the Carnegie during the event. To reserve, call the hotel directly at 423-979-6400 and say that you are attending the Johnson City Jazz Festival. For more details about the festival and to buy tickets, visit www.johnsoncityjazzfestival.com and follow the festival on Facebook (Johnson City Jazz Festival) and Instagram. First Thursday, February 3rd Sweetheart Shop & Hop It’s the first, First Thursday of 2022! Grab your sweetie and join us on February 3rd, from 5pm to 8pm for the opening reception for our February exhibiting Artist Renee Pitts! Renee Pitts Artist Statement The lines of the landscape, convening, and converging, the light falling across an object at just the right angle, or color shouting in a place passed by and forgotten… all these observations create a reason for me to paint. But the thing that pulls me further into a scene or an image is more than I can see with my eye. That observation is observed from a deeper place in my heart and my feelings, an intense reaction that pushes me to pick up a brush and paint…To create a moment in time that connects the viewer to the emotion, the feeling, and in the most wonderful way the viewer is there, and the experience becomes their own.

So, now I am a homeowner all on my own. I still have the love and support from my family and friends. But I also have the love and support of a wonderful guy, Tim. During the process of refinancing, Tim told me how proud he was of me. He listened to my worries and insecurities when I would tell him how overwhelmed I felt. If it’s true that those who can’t do, teach, then welcome to this week’s episode of “Do as I Say and Not as I Do,” otherwise known as “A Beginner’s Guide to Weight Loss.” In all seriousness, it feels like January was a bit of a free trial month for me, and if it feels the same way to you, there’s no shame in getting back on track for Fresh Start February! And just because I rode the gravy covered carb train straight past the gym the entirety of the first month of 2022 doesn’t automatically mean you shouldn’t listen to me when it comes to healthy eating.
weight. While I’m grossly dumbing that down, it’s not all that much more complicated, but allow me to go into a bit more detail.
Beginning with the most important factor for dropping pounds is what you’re putting in your mouth; you must be burning more calories than you’re taking in to lose weight. Before you do anything else, you must do 3 things: buy a food scale, get in the habit of tracking and measuring everything you eat, and calculate your calorie deficit. An easy mathematical equation is to multiply your current weight by 10-12 and aim to eat that I tend to forget that not everyone amount in total calories, adjusting the was raised in a household where numbers as you start to lose weight. their first toy of memory was a deck However, for a far more accurate and of Richard Simmons ‘Deal a Meal’ personalized solution, you can also go cards and didn’t spend an hour to www.fatcalc.com and plug in your every Monday night until they were info for a full breakdown. Sometimes it slips my mind so it’s also of the utmost importance that I’m in a pretty small minority you get in the habit of measuring your who has lived with an NPC fitness food and educate yourself on proper competitor and not many people serving sizes. This is the only way you actually committed to the Atkins Diet will ever lose fat. for 3 months prior to their senior prom like me. What I’m trying to say Second to a calorie deficit in importance is a fun one- getting is that, because of my particular life quality sleep and adequate rest! Lack circumstances, I happen to know a of sleep can put stress on the body, great deal more than the average person when it comes to trying to get releasing the hormone cortisol, which increases appetite and unhealthy fit. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with feeling a little lost about food cravings. Staying up longer also leaves more time for unhealthy where to start if you weren’t raised grazing and more opportunity to in an environment that prioritized healthy food choices; the majority of fall off the wagon. A good night’s sleep is also necessary for physical people weren’t! activity and optimal brain function, The greatest misconception and increasing your productivity. Aim for deterrent about weight loss is that getting in the habit of 7-9 hours of it’s extremely complicated, strenuous solid sleep per night. Regardless of and boring when in fact it’s quite what your personal scheduling may simple – eat less + move more = lose be, adjust so you have that much time at once to dedicate to recharging your body and mind. Next on the list is to put an emphasis on lean, quality sources of protein.
Protein is not only what helps you build muscle, but it also keeps you feeling full when you’re in a calorie deficit. It will fluctuate based on your personal goals, but the average person should aim for about 1g of protein per pound of their goal weight. So if your goal weight is 150lbs, you should be trying to eat 150g of protein daily. When you begin trying to make that amount of protein fit with your daily caloric goals, you will quickly realize why it’s so important to choose lean cuts of meat; the fattier stuff just won’t fit your daily budget. Things like boneless, skinless chicken breast, flaky white fishes and shellfish, 93% ground beef and turkey, egg whites and lowfat cottage cheese should all be staples on your weekly grocery list. Add lots of vitamin packed produce and moderate amounts of complex carb sources and you should be maxing out your calorie allotment. A good rule of thumb is to only shop the outer perimeters of the grocery store (fresh meats, dairy, produce) and avoid the inside aisles (pre-packaged garbage) as much as possible. At the very bottom of the list of key weight loss factors is the gym. There’s a wild misconception that you need to be in the gym 2 hours a day, killing yourself on the treadmill and lifting barbells like a pro to lose pounds. But the reality is, you could literally not step foot in a fitness center and still hit your goal weight. While there are definite health benefits to exercise, it is not necessary. You could do crunches ‘til the cows come home, but you’ll never have ab definition until you’re under a certain body fat percentage, period. And that can only be achieved by burning actual fat through consistent, mindful diet choices. 90% of weight loss success comes strictly from what you’re fueling your body with, and the dreaded cardio is the least important
thing to consider when it comes to getting healthy. Instead, focus on 30 minutes of moderate strength training 4x a week and getting in 10,000 steps every day. Most phones now come standard with a built in pedometer, but if yours doesn’t you can find them for cheap online. That’s it! Eat less, move more, lose weight. It really is that simple for us beginners. And even though I’ve been at this for most of my life, my track record of constant ‘3 steps forward and 2 steps back’ keeps me a beginner just like most everyone else. Don’t be too intimidated to start because you’re inundated with perfect bodies performing feats of strength on Instagram. Most of it is fake and the real ones are fitness professionals who dedicate their entire lives to that lifestyle. Once you begin to see results, healthy choices get easier to make and begin to snowball without even a second thought. Stay out of your own head and the sky is your limit! Happy Fresh Start February!

When"The Matrix" was released in 1999 (!) the movie could best be described as trippy cool. The film featured a special effect movie fans had never seen before and star Keanu Reeves in awesome sunglasses and a long black coat. The film proved to be such a success two sequels followed in 2003. Why it has taken Warner Brothers so long to bring a fourth film to the series is anyone's guess, but we now have "The Matrix Resurrections" for fans of the film series to enjoy. For those who have no clue about this series of films, it follows the story of the technological fall of humanity. As in a lot of stories in science fiction, artificial intelligence created by mankind has become self-aware and led to a race of machines that imprisoned mankind in a virtual reality system, called the Matrix, to be farmed as a power source. On occasion some of the human prisoners break free from the system, and because they are considered a threat, are pursued by artificial intelligence inside and outside of the Matrix. Keanu portrays Neo, who along with other humans, including Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss), have been trying to free humanity from the system in all the films while being chased by the guardians of the Matrix. The latest film
Pop Life

occurs sixty years after the events of "The Matrix Revolutions" and follows Neo who has been living an ordinary life under his original identity of Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco where he is a video game developer basing games on his faint memory of being Neo. However his life is about to change when a new version of Morpheus (a character who tries to help save humanity played in this film by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) offers him the infamous red pill which will reopen his mind to the world of the Matrix, which has become an even more dangerous place since the previous films. Once he is open to the Matrix, Neo joins a group of rebels to fight a new enemy. His actions set the stage for another amazing adventure within the Matrix and some trippy (that word again) segments during the course of the story. Neo is reunited with his friend Trinity, who when he initially meets her, is a married mother named Tiffany. The two eventually are fighting the evil machines and team with a group of rebels which include a character named Bugs (Jessica Jenwick), a glue-haired gunslinger with a White Rabbit ala "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" tatoo. As in the other films, this new effort goes in and out of reality so many times it makes your head spin, and you never know from moment to moment what is the real world or the Matrix world, but that's the fun of these movies. This is really the type of film you really need to pay close attention to, less you become even further confused than you might already be. While I have never been a huge fan of these films, I have enjoyed watching them, and I even dressed as Neo one Halloween. As most people who know me are well aware I am not a huge fan of the acting "talents" of Reeves, but he is perfect in this role as he is in his "John Wick" series. To me Reeves
is an actor who needs to carefully choose his roles (check his "acting" in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" where he nearly derails the film). Reeves aside, the latest film in the Matrix series takes full advantage of the update in special effects since 2003 and is full of eye candy. The film features several actors of note including Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff, both of which appear to be having a blast in their respective roles as villains. As I mentioned earlier the story
being set 60 years after the last film is well explained. "The Matrix Resurrections" is yet another tale of artificial intelligence attempting to take over or eradicate mankind. In closing I encourage you to always be polite to Alexa. Now playing in theaters and for a limited time on HBO Max. (Rated R)

Tri-Cities Faces and Places Celebrating the people and places of our community!
In the summer of 2019, Warner Archive, those denizens of the vault, released 1934’s “The Thin Man” on blu-ray for the first time. The film, which introduced the world to William Powell and Myrna Loy as everyone’s favorite married sleuths, Nick and Nora Charles, was a surprise hit and spawned a six-film franchise. With their first releases for 2022 now out, Warner Archive has finally completed the entire “Thin Man” series with the final film, 1947’s “Song of the Thin Man.” It, along with Alfred Hitchcock’s 1950 film “Stage Fright” is their inaugural discs for the new year. As soon as that 2019 release of “The Thin Man” was announced, collectors and film fans were abuzz with the hopes it wouldn’t be a one-off release, and we’d get the entire franchise out in HD. On VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD, all six films were released together. Here, it’s taken almost two and a half years, but Nick and Nora Charles are finally complete in stunning-looking editions on blu-ray. In “Song of the Thin Man” the Charles find themselves involved with a murder of a bandleader that

took place onboard a yacht during a charity casino night. The, wrongfully accused, suspect and his girlfriend seek out Nick to help with the situation, and soon Nick and Nora, and their faithful canine companion Asta, are off and running. This particular entry in the series, with its jazz playing suspects, is filled with some now delightfully dated slang that plays well as Nick and Nora are as confused by it as a modern audience would be. It’s fair to say the latter “Thin Man” movies aren’t quite as good as the earlier ones, and indeed “Song of The Thin Man” is my least favorite entry in the series. However, these are not bad films by any means and we’re lucky that the franchise never overstayed its welcome. For the last hurrah, “Song” is a fun and enjoyable film highlighted by a good supporting cast including Keenan Wynn as a very lively musician. Warner Archive brings “Song” to blu-ray from a brand new 4K scan of the best surviving elements. It looks fantastic, with sharpness and detail that was missing from previous home video releases of the film. I’d dare say it looks better than new prints did when it played in first run. Extras from the 2005 DVD have been ported over, and that’s a welcomed addition of a period-correct short subject, cartoon, and the original trailer. These films are well-beloved by film buffs, to finally have them all out on blu-ray is a treat, it comes highly recommended. It’s been a good 15 years since I last watched Alfred Hitchcock’s 1950 film “Stage Fright” starring Jane Wyman and Marlene Dietrich. My memory was that it was good, with the last half hour or so the best part of the film. When I began the new blu-ray yesterday, I wondered to myself why it’s been so long since I last watched the film. The answer, I hate to say, is that’s merely an OK Hitchcock film. Wyman plays a drama student who helps clear a friend being framed
for murder by a stage star played by Detrich. There’s a lot about “Stage Fright” that I like, but the film feels like it takes a little too long to really get going. It feels weird to say that about The Master of Suspense, but later in the decade, he would begin the greatest run of films of his entire career. Still, OK Hitchcock is better than most other’s films. “Stage Fright” is a good film, but not up there with his best work. Luckily, the original nitrate camera negative still exists and that was the basis for a new 4K scan that this blu-ray is sourced from. I was a little worried as the film began as the first ten minutes or so looked a bit soft, then it jumped into the kind of clarity and sharpness I was hoping for. One can’t help but wonder if
that’s an issue with how the first reel of the film was developed, or if that part of the negative is in rough shape? Outside of that, the rest of the film looks fantastic. Extras have also been ported over from the DVD release, they include a trailer and a very good makingof documentary on the film. For Hitchcock fans, it’s worth owning to complete your collection, but for the curious, I’d give it a rental before buying. Either way, it’s nice to have these films out on blu-ray, and it’s a good harbinger of what will come this year from Warner Archive. I’m excited to see where they’ll take us by year’s end. See you next week.
