On Saturday, April 30th, 2022 the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society and Museum will sponsor a train excursion on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the beauty of spring while riding the rails in vintage passenger railroad cars. The one-day excursion will cover most of the operating trackage of the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. The track follows the route of the former Southern Railway’s Murphy Branch Line, established in 1891, with its five percent grade and many bridges. Our scenic rail excursion takes us from the historic depot in Bryson City, NC, through the beautiful countryside of Western North Carolina, into the breath-taking Nantahala Gorge surrounded by the

majestic Smoky Mountains, and back to Bryson City. Much of the route hugs the banks of the Little Tennessee and Nantahala Rivers. It crosses Fontana Lake on a trestle spanning 780 feet 100 feet above the lake. Video clip online at: wataugavalleynrhs.org Passengers ride in comfort in First Class, Crown Class, Tourist Coach, or Open-Air cars. All classes offer seating in classic antique restored passenger cars. There are restrooms throughout the train. First Class cars are climatecontrolled and feature large windows and loungecar seating. Crown Class cars offer large windows and climate control for passenger comfort.

Tourist Coach Class cars have ceiling fans and windows that open and close for freshair viewing.

Forces of Nature, starring Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock, were also filmed on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.

Open-Air Coach cars are great for picture-taking and “experiencing” the ride and scenery.

The excursion runs rain or shine. Every effort will be made to maintain an on-time schedule. The Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum assumes no liability due to passengers not arriving on time at the Bryson City Depot.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has become a favorite of film producers over the years. The train wreck scene in the 1993 movie, The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, was filmed along the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. The railroad was used in the filming of the 1996 comedy, My Fellow Americans, starring Jack Lemmon and James Gardner, when they stumble onto a charter train full of UNC-Chapel Hill fans headed for the NCAA Final Four. Train scenes in the 1998 movie,

The Spring Great Smoky Train Excursions sell out fast, please order your tickets so you will not be left out. If you like riding a train and the scenic mountains, this trip is for you. Questions about the trip? Go to: www.wataugavalleynrhs.org, or email: wataugavalley@gmail.com

Johnson City Jazz Festival Adds Additional Night on March 10

theloaferonline.com February 22, 2022

12

Due to popular demand, organizers of the 4th annual Johnson City Jazz Festival, announced today that they will add an additional day to the event on March 10, 2022. The original event was to consist of only 2 days, March 11 and 12 at the Carnegie Hotel. Bill Perkins, a local jazz guitarist and the person responsible for organizing the performing musicians, noted that the combination of local musicians asking to perform, the ETSU music dept. wanting to be involved, and public demand encouraged organizers to add the additional night. Performers will include the ETSU Jazz Band, The Peterson/ Perkins band, The Tri-Cities Jazz Orchestra, and The JC Jazz Collective. There is no charge for this additional day, but attendees are encouraged to “tip” the bands. Organizers noted that this additional free night fits right into

their attempts to make the festival very affordable while bringing great music to our area. The cost for Friday and Saturday is $20 for each night, or $30 for both nights. The music starts at 7:30 on Thursday and 8 pm on Friday and Saturday. Organizers appreciate all the support they have received from the community as they work to bring back live music including sponsors Bank of Tennessee, First Horizon Bank, Carnegie Hotel, Time & Pay, Christian Schmid Design, Alberts Pawn as well as other Friends of the Festival. For more details about the festival and to buy tickets, visit: www.johnsoncityjazzfestival.com and follow the festival on Facebook (Johnson City Jazz Festival) and Instagram. (johnsoncityjazzfestival). For more information, contact Steve Scheu at 423-854-8860 or email to info@johnsoncityjazzfestival.com.

CONCERT SCHEDULE

‘Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening’ to Rock ETSU Martin Center

theloaferonline.com February 22, 2022

14

As the son of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, Jason Bonham spent his childhood at the feet of rock ‘n’ roll royalty when he wasn’t at the drums himself. By his teens, he was in bands opening for Queen, Meatloaf and Ted Nugent and has played Led Zeppelin reunions, Woodstock 2, tributes to Muddy Waters, has numerous film credits and has toured and recorded extensively. The legacy drummer will bring his 2022 version of “Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening” to the East Tennessee State University Martin Center for the Arts on Monday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the center’s ETSU Foundation Grand Hall. Local tickets will go on sale on the ETSU Martin Center website at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18. “We are thrilled to announce an ETSU Martin Center Series event featuring yet another rock ‘n’ roll legend, actually a legend’s son, touring in his father’s memory,” said Jennifer Clements, executive director of the Martin Center and University Events. “Jason Bonham and his ‘Led Zeppelin Evening’ has an amazing 2022 tour scheduled, and we can’t wait to hear those timeless Led Zeppelin tunes and classic riffs

reverberating through our Grand Hall.” The JBLZE tour was born out of the one-show 2007 Led Zeppelin reunion in London, dubbed Celebration Day, which featured Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones with Jason Bonham on drums, in an homage to his father, considered by many to be the greatest drummer in rock ‘n’ roll history. “Since 2010, JBLZE has celebrated the music of Led Zeppelin, giving fans a rare look into the legendary group’s inner sanctum ...” said a Forbes magazine article. “On stage during each JBLZE performance, Jason Bonham goes to great lengths to expose a new generation of Led Zeppelin fans to the legacy of his father.”

The set list for the “truly magical evening,” according to a Sonic Perspectives review, includes classics such as “Stairway to Heaven,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Kashmir,” “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You,” “The Ocean” and “Celebration Day.” “This was a hugely enjoyable show, because of the familiarity of the tunes, the uproarious atmosphere with an enthusiastic crowd, and because of the concrete lineage of Bonham and his efforts Photo Credit - Mike Corrado

Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening has been lauded for its authentic Zeppelin sound, from vocals to instrumentals. “The son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, Jason, and his fellow musicians replicated the sound of the iconic rock band perfectly,” said Tahoe Onstage. “Bonham dominated the stage on a massive, elevated drum set, playing out his father’s staccato legacy beat for beat.”

Hello! Welcome to Beanz Biker Corner! Since this is my first article I will tell you a little about myself. My name is Ann Hartley but most folks know me as Beanz. My ole man is Brian McQueen aka “Pork”. So in short we are Pork and Beanz. We have been together for 15 years. We have 2 dogs Ozzy and Whiskey and live in beautiful Shady Valley, Tennessee otherwise known as the belly of the Snake US 421. This is also where we have been hosting the Snake Pit Bike Rally for the last 7 years and this year is our 8th. Enough about me. The reason for this column is to give you updated information about bike nights, bike shows, bike rallies, benefits, etc. To better inform you about what is happening in our area and across the country. Since there isn’t a lot going on yet in our area I thought I might share some useless facts with you. Since February is the month of love and friendship I have chosen these facts accordingly: 1. Gentoo penguins give carefully chosen pebbles to their love interest. It’s sort of like a wedding ritual. 2. Cows can develop friendships with each other and become stressed when separated. 3. Sea Otters hold hands while sleeping so they don’t drift away. 4. Studies show that men find the smell of a woman’s tears unattractive.

WKMA Asks Guest to “Humor Me” In the age of Covid, it seems that the world around us has become dull and gray. “Humor Me: The Art of Laughter,” on display at William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, VA, February 24 - July 3, 2022, aims to provide the audience with a bit of joy. More information can be found online at williamkingmuseum.org. There are many different types of humor, and often humorous art is not considered “Fine Art.” The group exhibition, “Humor Me,” aims to challenge such notions. Neon Artist Danielle James pairs neon shapes and text with unexpected imagery to create a work of art that takes on a whole new (and often funny) meaning. Tonight is a Thursday and I’ve been invited to attend a Nashville talent industry party with a friend who is a model and actress. The talent agent throwing the mixer is a friendly acquaintance I’ve known for a few years now, and I’m sure I’ll run into several people I know. But for whatever reason the thought of going to this party is bringing me a plethora of anxieties, of which I could not really pinpoint the source until I expressed them to my friend. She responded in passing “It doesn’t matter, you belong in that room,” and it finally hit me. Like many other things during the duration of my lifetime, I actually don’t feel like I belong. I suffer from what is known as ‘imposter syndrome.’

they are. In the game of life, the cheat code is this: Confidence Over Competence. It doesn’t matter so much what you know but more that you’re confident in your capacity to figure it out and succeed. Your attractiveness skyrockets when YOU love and own your looks, which will make you stand out over the Pam Anderson look alike with no selfesteem. If you’re putting in the hard work and are kind, believe it when good things come to you and ACCEPT THEM. I had heard the term “imposter syndrome” in the past but had no idea what it was or just how much it was affecting me. If you feel these things, know you’re not alone and unless you’re a serial killer or otherwise terrible human, you deserve better than the bad things you’ve previously experienced. Be open to receive them. That goes double for me.

One of the most fascinating and heartbreaking films I have seen in awhile is "My Best Friend Anne Frank", a fact based Dutch produced story about the enduring friendship between Anne Frank and Hanneli Gostar, two German-Dutch girls of Jewish heritage who were profoundly impacted by the Holocaust. The story is told from Golsar's point of view, and is based on the book "Memories of Anne Frank: Reflections of a Childhood Friend '' by American author Alison Leslie Gold. As we know, Anne is one of the most discussed victims of the Holocost due to the posthumous fame she achieved with the 1947 publication of "The Diary of a Young Girl'', which chronicles her time hiding in The Netherlands during German occupation from 1942 to 1944. Meanwhile, Anne's best friend was Hanneli, as the two became close while attending the same school in Amsterdam. The film chronicles the friendship between the two girls when they had to deal with the constant threat of German soldiers on every corner, and were confined to their area of their city in a "Jewish ghetto". Both of Hanneli's parents were observant Jews, and her father, who once was a

deputy minister of domestic affairs in Germany, was forced to resign his post when the Nazi Party came into power. After he was forced to resign, the family attempted to move to England, but ended up in Amsterdam, where Hanneli met Anne. The story reveals the home life of Hanneli and how they feel constant threat from the Germans who are constantly on patrol in the city, especially in their area. We also see Anne's home life as well, and the well know area behind her father's bookcase which contains hidden rooms in which she would later hide from the Nazi's. It was shocking to me to see how the people of Jewish heritage were not even allowed to attend movies in the city, and Anne and Hanneli did sneak into a theater one time with the help of a friend. Eventually both families were arrested by the Gestapo and taken to different concentration camps. Hanneli's experience in one of the camps, while horrific, was nothing compared to the experience Anne endured, even though the film only briefly shows Anne's existence on the other side of the camp. Hanneli, also referred to as Hannah, was in the privileged side of the camp (I certainly saw few privileges on her side of the camp), because her family had Palestinian passports with them. The scenes in the concentration camp are cringe inducing, as they should be, and really bring home the truth about this horrible moment in history. At one point Hanneli is able to communicate with Anne through the hay-filled barbed wire wall separating them, and she is able to throw a box of bread and socks over the wall to Anne. After pulling some of the hay out of the wall, Hanneli is finally able to see her best friend on the other side, and is heartbroken by her appearance. I really enjoyed how this conveyed this special friendship between

the girls and how their forced separation made Hanneli even more determined to help her friend. As most know, Anne sadly did not survive her time in the camp to see the liberation, but her friend Hanneli survived and later fulfilled her lifelong desire to become a nurse. Hanneli currently resides in Jerusalem. "My Best Friend Anne Frank" won a Golden Film award, and I can certainly see why. This film, despite being set in one of the most tragic times in

the history of the world, is about enduring friendship. I recommend this film for all, and especially for those of a younger generation who must be taught about the Holocaust, less this horrible moment in time be forgotten. We must never forget the Holocaust, less history repeat itself. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated TV-14)

Anyone who has had even a passing awareness of news during this pandemic has been well aware that the March 2020 launch of the video game “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” was a rocket that became one of the biggest-selling games in North America. The game is a fun, cute, relaxing “slice of life” game where you enjoy living on a tropical island with anthropomorphic animal friends. Fishing is a part of the game and has been since the launch of the first “Animal Crossing” game 20 years ago. Some fish are very common in the game, as anyone who has played New Horizons knows that you can catch a black bass as easily as anything. This is especially frustrating when you’re trying to catch a rare fish in the game. Since “Animal Crossing” works in realtime, certain fish only spawn during particular months and at specific times of the day. The hardest to find fish in the game is the Stringfish. It only appears from December to March, between the hours of 4:00 PM to 9:00 AM. That’s not all, the string fish will only appear at a river that’s directly on

the top of a cliff. I have been trying to catch this fish for over a year. You’re not just at the mercy of where the fish will spawn. You can help things along by using fish bait to spawn different fish in a particular spot. You can dig up clams on your beach and craft them into bait (this is starting to sound like a travel ad and not about a video game, isn’t it?). I spent a good week trying to catch the fish, crafting between 15 to 20 pieces of bait. It’s not as easy as it sounds, it can take maybe an hour to craft that much depending on how many clams you can find. After three nights in a row of trying, spending an hour to craft bait, and catching more black bass than I ever wanted to see again, I was ready to give up. Yet, last night I became determined, I felt a bit like Quint in “Jaws.” I was going to catch this fish and be done with it. The previous week had told me this was going to be a long-haul game. I put on my finest fisher’s hat—a 1999

“Star Wars: Episode 1” bucket hat. I spent almost two hours crafting fish bait, searching every beach on my island in a pattern. Halfway into this endeavor, I looked over at my cat, resting on the sofa, and said: “I'm not talkin' 'bout pleasure boatin' or day sailin'. I'm talkin' 'bout workin' for a livin'. I'm talkin' 'bout stringifishin’!” My cat looked at me for a moment then went back to cleaning themselves. When you use tools in the game they’ll break after a while, I ran to the store on my island and bought two extra fishing rods, then I went to the spot on my island best suited for the strongish to spawn. I was ready to spend the rest of my day, nay, my natural life in this spot to find this elusive fish. I would grow a beard, I would become encrusted in my own filth. I wasn’t going to move until I had a stringfish. I took a breath and scattered some bait, a small shadow appeared

in the water. Nah! I wasn’t after this silly “appetizer” I wanted the main course. I scattered again, a larger shadow appeared. It was, yet another, black bass. For the third time in a row, I scatted my bait, and a shadow about the size as the one before was there. I assume I’d be another black bass. I cast my line, the fish took the bait, and much to my shock it was a Stringfish! I was so happy I felt like I was about to fall off a boat into a river Bill Dance style. Sure, none of this applies in real life, but I may add it to my resume to impress any future employer. Who wouldn’t want to know that this go-getter they’re considering adding to their staff caught the mysterious Stringfish in “Animal Crossing: New Horizons?” It’ll be a story I’ll brag to my grandchildren about one day. The day that ole pappy had his finest sporting achievement. See you next week.
