NOTE
FROM THE
PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! I hope you are enjoying this BEAUTIFUL weather! The smell of Spring is so strong and I am loving it! Winter can be pretty with the snow but I do not enjoy the cold. Take your family and pets outside and enjoy this gorgeous sunshine God has given us. This week we are featuring some local entertainment. We have so many talented musicians in the area and we thought they deserved some recognition. I grew up listening to bands like 38 special, Loverboy and REO Speedwagon and I still love to listen to them occasionally. Most of the time my car radio is consumed with today’s pop for the kids or I am fighting to hear a few minutes of country. I hope you will take some time to listen to some of these bands. You can always find their schedules in our Spotlight section. Thank you so much for continuing to support us! There are several places that we just can’t keep stocked with Loafers and that is wonderful. Let us know if we can do anything for you.
Love, Lisa Durbin Publisher

TikTok Famous Country Singer Cooper Alan Comes to Cameo Theater Saturday March 12 at The Cameo Rising country star Cooper Alan’s latest single, “New Normal,” shot straight to the top the moment it was released, hitting #1 on the iTunes country chart and #6 on the all genres chart. The song also was streamed over 114,000 times on Spotify the first day of release. The song has clearly struck a nerve with many fans on the TikTok platform using the song as background to their own videos, sharing their ‘new normal’ with their family and friends. “I’m still in shock,” Alan says. “The connection that I’ve been able to make with my fans on TikTok over the past couple of months is so special to me. They brought this song to life and blew it up before it was even out; it absolutely blows my mind. I honestly don’t think I’ve stopped smiling for 24 hours. So thankful! It really feels like the beginning of a new chapter in my career as an artist.” With his “covid-caroling,” imitations of popular singers singing “Savage,” and
all-around fun content, the 24-yearold has gone viral on TikTok – hitting 3.1 MILLION likes with over 417,000 followers. Alan’s voice, down-home personality, humor, and authenticity have resonated with fans on the platform. “New Normal” was written by Cooper Alan, Seth Mosley and Victoria Shaw with Shaw and Mosley producing. The song came out of a zoom conversation between Cooper Alan and his cowriters. Cooper explains, “While the pandemic has caused a lot of struggle and hardship, we all found that we have experienced little blessings along the way. That’s what this song is about. It immediately struck a nerve with my friends on TikTok from the first day that I started posting little teasers of the song. My TikTok now has over 3 million likes so it was a no brainer to release it as soon as I could. As an independent artist it has been really amazing how people keep finding my music and joining me on this journey.” Cooper Alan was born and bred in the beautiful
state of North Carolina. In addition to 4 years at UNC Chapel Hill, he also played every bar, college campus, and Honky Tonk that would allow him and his band to play. Cooper and friends soon became the “go to” band for great music and high energy, all-night throw-down performances. After graduation, he packed up his guitar and moved to Nashville as fast as he could, where he had the incredible luck of meeting hit songwriter/producer Victoria Shaw who signed him to a publishing deal immediately upon meeting the talented singer/songwriter. Most nights you can find him playing in and around Nashville writing songs with incredible co-writers like Rivers Rutherford, Gary Burr, Seth Mosley, Leslie Satcher, Will Robinson, Kent Blazy, James Dean Hicks, Lee Thomas Miller, and of course, Victoria Shaw. His hit singles include “Climate Change” and “15 to 12”, available on all streaming platforms. Catch up with Cooper Alan online at www.CooperAlan.com.

Pro-Art Presents After Jack
theloaferonline.com March 08, 2022
14
After Jack is a musical celebration of togetherness. Named 2014 Americana Vocal Group of the Year by the Appalachian Cultural Music Association, the trio couples modern sensibility with distinctly old-time energy to seamlessly blend bluegrass, gospel and folk elements. Combine your most cherished musical memories with a footstomping string band, and top it off with harmonies that spring straight from the soul of the mountains, and you’ve got After Jack. The Pro-Art Association welcomes the trio on Saturday, March 12th at 7:30 PM at Park Avenue Theater in Norton, VA in conjunction with the W. Campbell Edmonds Concert Series. After Jack hails from Ferrum, VA, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The all-female trio performs music from, and inspired by, the rich musical traditions of the region. Founding members Rachel and Emily Blankenship-Tucker met in 2010, while working as professional actors in a regional theatre company, The Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre, and its touring production, the Jack Tale Players. During their tenure with the company, they created original theatrical productions that highlighted a variety of traditional musical styles, produced contemporary plays, and carried on the oral traditions of the Blue Ridge region through dramatizations of folklore and songs. This experience served as a catalyst for the group’s creation, and a foundation for their current work. Songwriter Catherine Backus joined the group in 2019, rounding out the trio and bringing sparkling instrumentals and her own
powerhouse vocals to the mix. General admission tickets are $10 at the door, and all children and students are free to attend. Pro-Art season tickets will be honored for this performance. Season tickets can be purchased at proartva.org, in person at any show, or by calling 276-3764520. For the safety of everyone attending, Pro-Art requests patrons to wear a mask for the duration of the performance. Check the weather conditions 3. Inspect your bike 4. Be visible 5. Be observant and watch for road hazards 6. Carry a first aid kit 7. Stay at a safe distance 8. Use your signals and always blow your horn when a car gets too close There is a good chance that if someone ask you why you ride a motorcycle, they will never understand. Motorcycles imply adventure. Cross country drives, battling against a light wind with breath taking sights on every side and nothing between you and nature. Riding a motorcycle is not just a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. There are many reasons why people ride motorcycles. Riding gives us a 360 view of the world around us and
reminds us that life is not a video game. The wind in your face and the freedom of the open road. It helps lower your stress level. Sometimes motorcycle rides are romanticized; you see movies or pictures of couples riding a motorcycle and you can see how in love they are. Here’s the thing though. It’s all true. Motorcycles can be very romantic. If you’ve ridden motorcycles for a while, you’re already familiar with that sense of belonging to the motorcycle community. You ride down the road and see a fellow motorcyclist pass you riding the opposite direction and you give each other that common hand wave to acknowledge one another, even though you don’t know each other. You probably don’t do that with someone driving any other vehicle. Useless Facts: 1. St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish national holiday with banks, stores, and businesses closing for the day. 2. The first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the United States was held in Boston (1737). 3. The color of St. Patrick’s Day was originally blue. Wearing green has become a staple of St. Patrick’s Day, but the holiday was originally associated with the color blue. It’s thought that the shift to green happened because of Ireland’s nickname “The Emerald Isle,” the green in the Irish flag and the shamrock, or clover. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn as early as the 17th century. 4. Legend says that each leaf of the clover has a meaning: Hope, Faith, Love and Luck.

5. The real St. Patrick wasn’t Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an aristocratic Christian family. 6. Your odds of finding a four-leaf clover are about 1 in 10,000. 7. St. Patrick never got canonized by a pope, making his saintly status somewhat questionable.

Yesterday I acted as model for a new medi-spa spa opening in Brentwood and sat while the owner was trained on a new product by the company representative. I obviously documented the journey on social media to promote the new business, and I received dozens of messages from folks wanting to know about my experience, on every aspect from pain level to cost of the procedure. I know most women don’t like to admit to the things they’re doing in an attempt to retain their youth, and I totally understand and respect that. However, lucky for you all, I’m an open book when it comes to aesthetic and medical beauty treatments, my only hang-up being that I don’t have the financial resources to do it all! And while I’m aware some people want to age naturally so some of the more invasive procedures aren’t for them, I do think at the end of the day everyone wants to look and feel their best. There is a lot that goes into what makes ME feel I look my best, and I’m going to attempt to cover them here for curious parties. I’m by no means an expert, but my goal is to share my personal experiences, because it seems like there are a lot of people who are interested!
on the stage of their growth, it will cost between $45-$90 per appointment. I don’t lay in the tanning bed anymore, but I do subscribe to the belief “if ya can’t tone it, tan it” and prefer to keep a summer glow most of the year. An airbrush spray can cost from $20-$45 at the Sun Tan City booth, while a hand spray from a technician can cost $50 and up. I usually just use products at home, since it’s a little cheaper, but even a mitt and bottle of St. Tropez will run you around $45 and you have to use it daily. With makeup and facial beauty products, you definitely get what you pay for. While I can cut costs by shopping at discount stores like TJ Maxx, or spending less on items like lip liners and mascaras at drugstores, there are certain skin products where I have to invest. Let’s just say every time I fly I pack my makeup and beauty products in my carry-on, because it would cost far more to replace those than any amount of clothing in my checked bags in the event of lost luggage.
cheekbones, I would also like to keep them that way. Unfortunately the icy grip of Father Time is slowly strangling the collagen out of my face, so now I have to lean on science with the assist to maintain the features I like best about my face. This involves the use of fillers like Juvederm and Restyline once or twice a year, and these can get pricey. A single syringe runs about $450-$700, so when you consider it takes 2 ½-3 full syringes to achieve the look I want, it’s a definite hit to the wallet. Thankfully these treatments last much longer than neurotoxins, but it’s still something that is a nonpriority. The procedure I did yesterday was a PDO brow lift, where the injector literally inserts small threads of barbed wire under your skin to create an eye lift. I volunteered to model for this so it was deeply discounted, but a quick google search returned a cost of $800-$1000.
1-2 times a year, and between the paperwork, wait times and length of procedure, that can take hours for completion. It’s honestly exhausting and the bane of my existence, but if I’m going to succumb to old age, I’m going down swinging.
This insight might seem self-indulgent and ridiculous to some people, and that’s totally okay. For others, it might seem like nothing at all. I have 2 friends, one of whom has never done a single thing besides take care of her skin and rarely wears makeup, and another who spent at least $35,000 on treatments over the course of a year; they’re both absolutely stunning. For myself, I don’t have kids or a spouse, I no longer own a house that requires money, so I consider this my hobby and the best investment on myself with I should also mention these treatments a high return. It makes me feel good are no walk in the park. I am completely needle-phobic, so my odds and I have no regrets! Do what makes YOU happy and what fits YOUR budget Moving on to the “non-essential” of passing out are extremely high. extras, there are more invasive splurges Depending on your pain threshold, and you can’t go wrong. I make throughout the year when I it could either be no big deal, or one can afford it. My big one is paralyzing of the most horrifying experiences of toxins like Dysport and Botox. I your life. I will say even with numbing, personally prefer Dysport because there is nothing comfortable about my body metabolizes Botox way too having an 18 gauge needle threading First and foremost, let’s just get down fast and it doesn’t work as well or last barbed wire through your face or a 2 to brass tacks. Botox and Dysport “It costs me a lot of money to look this it’s a small injection of botulism used across the forehead and around the are the least invasive, with just a tiny cheap.” Just the bare necessities for eyes that paralyzes the muscles, which prick and it’s over very quickly. And with the production of more due to the fact experience, definitely start there. inflation making the cost of products that you cannot move your face at skyrocket, these treatments are also Financial cost is always of the main going up. At my salon it costs around the injection sites. Year after year I attempt to see most of the movies nominated for Oscars Best Picture, but I never see all of them. My track record for the films nominated this year is a bit better. One of the films nominated is "The Power of the Dog". This film is described as a "western psychological drama", so if you expect this film to be the typical shoot-em-up western then you are in for a let down. To me this is a family drama that happens to be set on a ranch in 1920's Montana, with New Zealand standing in for that western state. The film is based on the Thomas Savage 1967 novel of the same name, and I'm surprised it has taken Hollywood this long to adapt the novel to film. The film stars the always dependable Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil Burbank, who runs a ranch with his brother George (Jesse Plemons of "Friday Night Lights" fame). When the brothers are on a cattle drive they stop at an Inn where Geroge meets and falls in love with widower Rose (Kristen Dunst), the owner of the Inn who lives there with her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The two brothers are very different in temperament, with the highly educated Phil often berating his brother and others with his volatile temper. Meanwhile the less-educated and

quiet George shows kindness to others and is often at odds with his brother. To say Phil is a lessthan-savory character is putting it lightly. When George and Rose are married, he brings his new bride back to the ranch where she is met with a steely coldness by Phil, who feels she has taken advantage of the family's wealth. With her new wealth Rose is able to send Peter to college to study medicine and surgery. Phil, along with the other ranch hands, constantly belittle Peter, and their actions toward her son and herself have driven Rose to drink heavily. George does everything he can to help Rose, even bringing in a grand piano so she can play like she did at a movie theater. After the piano arrives, Phil taunts her with his expert banjo playing while she struggles to retain her piano playing skills. In fact, one evening when the governor arrives with his wife for a dinner party, Rose freezes at the piano and is unable to play, further fueling the tension between her and Phil. When Peter returns home from college for summer break, he is taunted, but eventually Phil warms up to him and takes him under his wing in order to teach him horseback riding. With Phil and Peter becoming closer, Rose worries that he will be a bad influence on her son. Her worries do not deter George, as he feels Phil can help Peter better become the man he needs to be in order to eventually help on the ranch. Despite Peter and Phil's budding friendship, Rose remains at odds with her brother-in-law for the entire film. The film has a shocking ending, but at least three of the characters are left happy as the story closes. The film contains breathtaking cinematography, and director Jane Campion ("The Portrait of a Lady") takes full advantage of the beauty of New Zealand, with breathtaking vistas at every turn. This film is up for
Best Cinematography and in my opinion will battle "Dune" for the Oscar. As for the actors, the tension in the film between the actors cuts like a knife, and three of the actors, Cumberbatch, McPhee and Dunst are nominated. Campion is up for Best Director, and she may just take Oscar home. The film brings home the fact that bullying never ends well and often leads
to psychological damage for all involved. "The Power of the Dog" is a haunting film that proves Westerns need not all be about gun fights at high noon. Now playing on Netflix and in some theaters. (Rated R)

It’s a trivial thing. Something that has no real consequence on world events. Yet, this is still for the person going through it frustrating as hell. I have misplaced a remote control. It’s a remote to one of the many pieces of equipment in my home theater. There’s a drawer in which I keep all the remotes in that room, and I nearly always put them back in there when not in use. So, imagine my shock when a remote I was using just two days ago, that I could swear you to in a court of a law I had returned to the drawer, wasn’t there. Seven remotes work all the equipment in my home theater. I have at times thought about getting one of those programable universal remotes with a touch screen to handle all the various stuff I have, but they always seemed to be too much money when the remote drawer worked just fine. What makes this funny to me, is that the remote that is temporarily missing is one that I promise you makes for a problem that I am the only person in this entire state, maybe the country, is having. I am, in the year of our Lord TwoThousand-And-Twenty-Two—missing the remote to my LaserDisc player.

“Your what?” Some of you might be saying. This is very fair game as LaserDisc, the grandfather of DVD and blu-ray, is a format that is dead and hasn’t had a new release in 20 years. LaserDisc is a large CD, the size of a record, double-sided, and they hold video in—for the time—high quality with digital sound. It was the film nerd’s format of choice in the 1990s and the idea of packaging bonus features with movies, such as documentaries and director’s commentary tracks, was something that was pioneered on the format.
going to be used again soon. So this has become especially baffling as to where the hell I put it. I have a clear memory of tidying up on Saturday morning and moving the remote from my desk. I thought I put it in the drawer, but it seems I have not.
fresh brain in the morning would help things, as would a pot of good strong coffee. I even grabbed a step ladder so I could get a higher view of everything to see if it would help. Over two hours the next day I turned my office upside-down. I put every remote I came across on the coffee table. Nothing. It was nowhere and I was truly baffled and feeling my brain being broken over this. Accepting defeat, I was putting the ladder up when I walked by my cat’s condo that sits next to my desk. I glanced at it in passing and something caught my eye, a shine of black plastic in the top.
Like any sane person an hour before bedtime last night, I was searching around my home theater/office like a crazed contestant on “Finder’s Keepers” (there’s a reference for all my fellow elder Millennials). My cat even joined in on the search, following me around as I crawled on “OK, but why do you even have a my hands and knees to see if maybe LaserDisc player in 2022, Andy?” For I put it somewhere and it slid down Sure enough, there was the remote, a few reasons. My home theater is also where my home office is—it’s a room that does a lot of things—and often during the day when I’m working, I’ve been using the LaserDisc player as a CD player for background music when I don’t feel like playing a record. OK, calm down! Everyone relax. Yes, Andy “I Love Records” Ross sometimes listens to things in other formats. It’s OK. We’ll get through this. This is the catalyst for the remote having become misplaced. Friday, I was working on a project and decided to listen to some Martin Denny—the king of a very delightful mid-century modern music format known as Exotica—imagine music you’d hear at a tiki bar visiting Disney World and you’re in the ballpark. As such, the remote to the LaserDisc player was on my desk, to the right of my computer. As I said, nine times out of ten, the remote goes right back to the drawer when I’m done. Maybe it’ll hang out on the coffee table because I know it’s
