NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! I am so happy to show you one of my most favorite issues each year……The Wedding Issue! I love seeing all of the wedding pictures and hearing the stories about their big day. If you have never planned a wedding for yourself or your daughter, you may not understand the true stress of it all. I have experienced this first hand and you can read about the craziness we had during one of my daughter’s wedding. I hope you will take a few minutes to look over the folks who have advertised in this issue. They would love to help you plan or host your big day. If you have looked for us online, you have noticed that our website is not currently available. This is one of those unfortunate times where we were hacked and our site was stolen. We are working hard to get a new site up and running as soon as possible. Until then you can always find us here in print or on social media. We appreciate your patience and understanding along with your continued support. Have a great week!

Love, Lisa Durbin Publisher

The Loafer’s Wedding Issue

On the Cover: Veronica and Dustin Craig We originally got married at the Foundation on March 31st, which was the first day we went to dinner 3 years before our wedding and is also the day he proposed the year before our wedding. We actually went to highschool together and we were really good friends but never dated and lost touch 9 years after highschool and reconnect and picked up like there was never anytime lost! We are truly soulmates, he is my best friend and my rock.

We both motivate each other to be the best we can be for our 2 girls. We decided to do more intimate wedding pictures together instead of rushing the day of while all of our guest were waiting so to shorten the wait we scheduled this a few weeks after our wedding on Roan mountain the beauty spot with Brittany Carrier.. moments captured by Brittany. She does all of our photos and is amazing!

This fundraiser will benefit Kathy Seymore “Halfpint” in having a liver transplant. She has been diagnosed with Cirrhosis (said to be caused by medicine for diabetes) and also has Hepatopulmonary Syndrome - an uncommon condition that affects the lungs of people with advanced liver diesease. This is caused by blood vessels in the lungs expanding and increasing in number, making it hard for red blood cells to properly absorb oxygen. Kathy is currently on 5 liters of oxygen. Without this transplant she has been given 6 mo. -1 year to live. She has to have her deductable of $5200 just to be put on the transplant list and she has to live in Durham, NC close to Duke Hospital for up to 2 months. She is drawing a small disability check, but has rent and utilities here and will have them in Durham as well. She is 58 years of age and drove a truck nearly 30 years until she started driving the Marsh Blood Mobile and doing phlebotomy work for them. Marsh Blood Mobile will be giving back to Kathy with every pint donated. For more info or anyone willing to sponser please contact:

The Missing Groom

theloaferonline.com March 22, 2022

By: Lisa Durbin Most every little girl dreams of her wedding day. The gorgeous puffy dress, the bridesmaids, cake and all the other fun stuff. Every bride goes through some stress before and on her big day. Here is a story about my daughter’s wedding. Kylea and Justin planned their wedding date around his basic training with the Air Force even taking into consideration his training for his job in Special Forces. Kylea was in nursing school at ETSU and planned to finish before following along on his military journey. After speaking with the recruiter to be sure of the important dates the big day was set for Sept 23, 2013. As the mother of the bride I started the tasks of planning everything with minimal input from my child as she was busy in school and writing letters to her Airman while in training. Justin’s arrival back to the Tri Cities was set for about 2-3 weeks before the wedding day. Plenty of time to visit with family, have final fittings for his tux and enjoy some down time. Somewhere along this process we learned his first assignment would be Korea and he would be going alone. They had so much to prepare!

Our first hint of trouble was when his original date of arrival passed with word things were delayed. I believe it had to do with a government shutdown or something going on with the military. Justin had finished his training and was just waiting on his final paper orders to his post and his plane ticket home to his now anxious bride to be. Days began to pass and tension began to rise and there was still no paperwork and permission to come home. I spent my days finalizing plans and my nights trying to ease Kylea’s

guest coming from out of town.

mind that her groom would be home in time. As the days turned into weeks and the big day was very close I started to make some phone calls to anyone that would listen to help us bring him home. Keep in mind he wasn’t deployed or even in active duty. Her was literally sitting in his dorm room waiting for paperwork. As the week of the wedding approached Kylea became frantic and I started to make calls about postponing. Can you imagine asking Venues, photographers, florists and caterers to change a date but you aren’t sure when yet?! Not to mention we have

get to spend the last 6 mos. with him there) and being deployed, living in Charleston and Idaho the Colmer family now reside in San Antonio, Texas. Staff Sergeant Justin Colmer is a military basic training instructor at Lackland Air Force Base and Kylea is a Registered Nurse at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital. Their family now includes 6-year-old Kason and 2-year-old Jayden along with their dogs Jax and Jessie.

The day before the wedding dawned with tears and dread of how we were going to have a wedding with no groom. I called my now son in law first thing and I told him to walk the halls of the offices and try to find an officer to help him. He said most have left for the weekend but he was going to try anything. Luckily he found a female officer (I think this mattered) We are all glad the groom showed up to and she gave Justin a weekend pass for his wedding. That is all she the wedding! could authorize and he had to fly home and back on his own dime but he could make the wedding! His mother and best friends/ groomsmen took our 12 passenger van to get him in Knoxville around 1:00am while the rest of us tried to carry on with a makeshift rehearsal mostly answering questions about the groom’s absence. I am happy to say on their Wedding day my son is law was indeed waiting with my son (the officiant) at the alter and when he first saw Kylea walked down the aisle after months apart he was all tears! It was a stressful few weeks but that moment made is all worth it. After his service in Korea (Kylea did

New Wedding Special Announced At Historic General Morgan Inn Who doesn’t love a classic summer wedding? Beautiful weather, stunning scenery, limitless dress options for guests…the list goes on and on as to why this season is often the most popular time to get hitched. The right venue is the cornerstone to enjoying the perfect summer ceremony and reception, according to Patricia Bohon, director of sales at the historic General Morgan Inn. “Selecting a venue is one of the first things couples do,” she said. “They want a venue that aligns with their vision for the wedding.” She added that the General Morgan Inn is a popular choice for summer weddings because the upscale hotel features both an indoor Grand Ballroom and a rooftop Garden Terrace. “Our terrace is especially favored for outdoor weddings

because it is covered with a gorgeous canopy,” she said. “This really ensures the best of both worlds – guests can enjoy spectacular views of historic downtown Greeneville, yet no one has to worry about alternative sites due to inclement weather.” Adding to the venue’s sophisticated charm, the Garden Terrace features three stunning chandeliers. “Our additional bistro lighting only enhances the ambiance, turning the ceiling into a romantic starry night,” Bohon said. “It’s absolutely breath-taking.” As an added incentive for couples to plan a summer wedding, the General Morgan Inn is offering a special to those who book during the months of June, July or August this year, said Bohon, who has been bringing storybook weddings to life at the hotel for more than 25 years.

“They can choose $500 off their wedding package or a complementary twonights’ stay in our luxurious honeymoon suite,” she said. The three-room honeymoon suite features an ornate fireplace in the combined living-dining area, a comfortable king-size bed, and a bathroom with a jacuzzi bathtub and walk-in steambath shower with heated tile flooring and towels. To receive the special pricing, couples must call Bohon at the hotel at 423.787.7510 and ask for the summer discount mentioned in “The Loafer” magazine. Elegant and timeless, the historic General Morgan Inn is located at 111 N. Main St. in downtown Greeneville. The stylish boutique hotel boosts 50 well-appointed guest

rooms and can accommodate 40 to 300 guests for the most intimate to extravagant weddings. The Grand Ballroom is perfect for a classic indoor wedding with fairy-tale whimsy, and the secondfloor Garden Terrace is ideal for outdoor weddings with a touch of tradition. The hotel’s wedding packages include a reception coordinator, linens, a wooden dance floor, tables and chairs, setup/cleanup/breakdown, floor plans, guestroom discounts, welcome bag delivery, complimentary parking on-site and catering by the renowned Brumley’s Restaurant. Alcohol is also available with professional bartenders. For more information or to schedule a tour of the venue, please call Bohon at 423.787.7510.

Hello! Riding season is finally here, everybody please watch for motorcycles, always look twice and listen. For those of us that ride please remember a few safety tips: 1. Wear motorcycle gear 2. Check the weather conditions 3. Inspect your bike 4. Be visible 5. Be observant and watch for road hazards 6. Carry a first aid kit 7. Stay at a safe distance 8. Use your signals and always blow your horn when a car gets too close There is a good chance that if someone ask you why you ride a motorcycle, they will never understand. Motorcycles imply adventure. Cross country drives, battling against a light wind with breath taking sights on every side and nothing between you and nature. Riding a motorcycle is not just a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. There are many reasons why people ride motorcycles. Riding gives us a 360 view of the world around us and

reminds us that life is not a video game. The wind in your face and the freedom of the open road. It helps lower your stress level. Sometimes motorcycle rides are romanticized; you see movies or pictures of couples riding a motorcycle and you can see how in love they are. Here’s the thing though. It’s all true. Motorcycles can be very romantic. If you’ve ridden motorcycles for a while, you’re already familiar with that sense of belonging to the motorcycle community. You ride down the road and see a fellow motorcyclist pass you riding the opposite direction and you give each other that common hand wave to acknowledge one another, even though you don’t know each other. You probably don’t do that with someone driving any other vehicle. Useless Facts: 1. St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish national holiday with banks, stores, and businesses closing for the day. 2. The first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the United States was held in Boston (1737). 3. The color of St. Patrick’s Day was originally blue. Wearing green has become a staple of St. Patrick’s Day, but the holiday was originally associated with the color blue. It’s thought that the shift to green happened because of Ireland’s nickname “The Emerald Isle,” the green in the Irish flag and the shamrock, or clover. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn as early as the 17th century. 4. Legend says that each leaf of the clover has a meaning: Hope, Faith, Love and Luck.

Beanz Biker Corner By Anne Hartley 423-297-5675

5. The real St. Patrick wasn’t Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an aristocratic Christian family. 6. Your odds of finding a four-leaf clover are about 1 in 10,000. 7. St. Patrick never got canonized by a pope, making his saintly status somewhat questionable.

Pro-Art Presents Germán López and Antonio Toledo

theloaferonline.com March 22, 2022

Germán López shines on the world stage as a brilliant and prolific timple player. He touches audiences with original, instrumental music that honors Canary folk music traditions, while embracing Spanish Flamenco, West African rhythms, jazz, and an innovative approach to performing traditional “island music.” You’ll recognize the brilliance of Germán López at first note, with his spectacular musicianship and vibrant, exciting sound. López will come together with Andalusian guitarist Antonio Toledo to present Canela y Limón on Monday, March 28th at 7:30 PM in Cantrell Hall on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. López is originally from the Canary Islands in Spain, where folks enjoy their cup of coffee with a touch of cinnamon (“canela”) and lemon (“limón”). Canela y Limón is also the name of López’s arrestingly beautiful album, played in duet with maestro Antonio Toledo. You’ll find the hallmarks of cinnamon and lemon in López’s music as you listen: spicy and sweet, robust and sharp. It’s a recipe for music that transports you to a simpler, kinder, more joyful world.

This performance is underwritten by The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and is part of the W. Campbell Edmonds Concert Series. The concert is free and open to the public. For the safety of everyone attending, Pro-Art requests patrons to wear a mask for the duration of the performance. Germán López was born in Gran Canaria in 1982. His career started when he was accepted at the early age of seven to study piano, jazz and music theory at the Conservatory of Music in Las Palmas, Spain. By the time he was ten, López began regular public performance, notably collaborating with legendary timple virtuoso José Antonio Ramos, who focused Germán’s interest in the timple and other traditional Canary Island instruments. As of today, López is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest living players of the timple. A five-string, long-necked instrument originating from the Spanish archipelago, the timple is recognizable in performance as a cross between a classical guitar and the ukulele. López’s masterful method of playing the instrument heightens its resonance and precision for a magical and immediately accessible sound.

Cindy Saadeh Fine Art Gallery: “Photos That Tell a Story” by Mark Mahoney April Exhibition at Cindy Saadeh Fine Art Gallery: “Photos That Tell a Story” by Mark Mahoney Friday, April 1st thru Saturday, April 30th, 2022 Opening Reception on Thursday, April 7th 5pm to 8pm. LIVE music from The BOSSES and there will be a Food Truck beside the Gallery on Commerce Street. Mark Mahoney Bio Mark Mahoney, a Massachusetts native now residing in Kingsport, Tennessee, caught the photography bug in his early teens. He graduated from Boston University with a degree in photojournalism. His first full time

job as a photojournalist was at the Kingsport Times-News in the late 1970s where he not only shot photos but wrote news stories and features as well. From there he worked at the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer in Kentucky as their chief photographer. After working in Kentucky, Mahoney worked at a series of newspapers in the Gannett chain: Jackson, Mississippi; Rockford, Illinois; Westchester County, New York. His positions in Gannett were that of a photographer, editor, director of photography, and assistant managing editor of photography.

I was thirteen-years-old when my mother thrust a Kodak Instamatic 104 into my hands and proclaimed me the official photographer of our upcoming family vacation in Florida. Did she forget I was in middle school? I was already well versed in playful sarcasm, the official language of my age group, and handing me a camera, a marvelous and persuasive tool of communication, was a gutsy move by my mother, who herself was a painter and a lover of life and all things beautiful.

Lately I’ve been questioning my future a great deal, in all aspects of my life. Who am I now, am I on the right track, have I been on the wrong path this whole time, what do I really want out of life to feel fulfillment…and this applies to everything from my career, my love life, my friendships and even my spirituality. One thing that remains unwavering is my firm belief you need only pay attention to what’s happening right in front of your eyes to find answers, but that in turn muddies a whole lot of water for me. Are there such things as cues or signs from the universe, or am I putting too much meaning into coincidence?

After successfully completing my internship, my college graduation was celebrated with an economic recession, which meant several more years of tending bar until I got my desired position as a sales rep with a distributor. Having been a Batman fan since childhood, I have made it a point to attend an opening day screening for every film featuring the Dark Knight, and 2022 was no exception with the opening of "The Batman", starring Robert Pattinson. Speaking of Pattinson, as with past actors who have been cast as the Caped Crusader, Warner Brothers took flack for casting the former "glittery vampire" in the role of the beloved character. Many thought Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck would all fail in the role, but they all succeeded. Notice I didn't mention George Clooney. I'm sure he would have survived in a better Batman film than what he had to deal with. Myself, like most sensible Batman fans, wanted to give each of the aforementioned actors a chance to prove they could handle donning the cape and cowl. Thus, Pattinson had large shoes to fill, and did he ever. More on Pattinson in a bit. The plot of the film is considered a reboot of the Batman film franchise and is set two years into Batman's crime fighting career, and he is still a bit "green" while taking down bad guys. In the story Batman deals with the corruption of Gotham City and the newly emerged Riddler (Paul Dano), who in this interpretation

is presented as a serial killer who targets Gotham's elite. The film takes inspiration from the year on comic books from 1987, "The Long Halloween" series (1996-97 and a new excellent animated feature) and "Ego". I am happy to say the film follows the detective side of Batman, which has been sadly overlooked in previous efforts. The film begins on Halloween and we see the Riddler strike his first victim in creepy and horror film style. He also leaves a message for Batman, which is the first of many messages he leaves at crime scenes. During his first years of crime fighting, Batman has become fast friends with Lieutenant James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and is reluctantly accepted by the Gotham City Police Department, but their relationship with him is shaky at best. While Batman and Gordon are investigation the Riddler's first high profile murder, Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) unexpectedly runs into Batman while trying to steal evidence that would implicate a friend of hers. The two eventually develop the relationship comic book fans have known for years, and it's interesting to see how the two bond in this film. The story involves famous characters from Batman lore, including Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis) and Oswald Cobblepot/ Penguin (Colin Ferrell). I don't want to give away much of the plot details, as the film is filled with shocks and surprises, other than to say all the aforementioned characters play important roles in the storyline of city corruption that involves nearly all of the Gotham City leaders. The film is as much horror/detective/film noir as superhero film, making the film refreshing. The actors are all at their best, with Dano terrifying as The Riddler, Kravitz perfect as a very sensual and tough Catwoman, and Wright is effective as the

trusting Gordon. Of course, the real revelation is Pattinson absolutely owning the role of Batman, who at times seems like a goth Batman. When Pattinson's Batman is on screen, he dominates every scene, and I love how director Matt Reeves ("Planet of the Apes") has Batman coming out of the shadows to terrify those he is approaching. Footsteps in the dark have never sounded so creepy. Of course you can't talk about a Batman film without mentioning the Batmobile. In this film the introduction is a "movie moment" and the bad guys know they are in trouble when the car starts rumbling. The chase scene with the Batmobile pursuing the Penguin is one for the ages and ends with what will be considered an iconic moment. There are so many great things to say about this film, but I don't have the space. The cinematography is amazing, the soundtrack is perfect for the mood of the film, and the storyline

is enthralling. The film is nearly three hours long, but it never felt that way to me and I wanted more. In spite of the darkness of the film, the conclusion is one of hope for Batman and his city. Ladies and gentlemen we have a new Batman for long time fans and new fans as Pattinson absolutely nails the role. The film is rated a strong PG-13, and this is not a Batman film for younger kids, so be wary. If you are a Batman fan or a fan of quality cinema, make time to see "The Batman" at the theater for one of the best ever big screen presentations of one of the most iconic characters of all time. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13)

Next week a pair of new releases come to blu-ray from Warner Archive, both titles are extensive restorations of two very different kinds of films, and in the packages put together by those mavens of the vaults, they’re two of the most impressive titles yet from the “boutique within a studio” that is Warner Archive. The biggest surprise of the two titles I have for this week is 1937’s “A Star is Born” starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, but more on that one later. First up, let’s take a look at George Pal’s fantasy epic “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” shot in Cinerama and restored from the original three-panel Cinerama negatives. In the early 1950s, Cinerama was the first major widescreen movie process. These weren’t just simple movie presentations at your neighborhood theater, they required special Cinerama venues and were treated as an event. You paid a premium ticket price, you dressed up, and you were given a souvenir program. The movies were presented in “roadshow” form, somewhere between a film and a Broadway show. There as overture, intermission, entr’acte, and exit music. The first film, “This is Cinerama”

was a travelogue that premiered in September of 1952. I want to you keep that in mind as I tell you what made Cinerama so special. Cinerama was shot with three cameras each using a 27mm lens. The idea is that it would approximate the full range of human vision. Three separate pieces of film, which shot more frame height than a standard 35mm camera, would be projected back to make the full image. Five technicians were required. One for each of three synchronized projectors, each one with a “panel” of the image, a fourth one just to run the seven-channel surround soundtrack, then a fourth to make sure the sound was being mixed well around the auditorium. All this went out onto a massive, curved screen that was on average some 30 feet high by 90 feet long. This was all the more impressive when you realize that surround sound like this type didn’t become widespread in the average theater till the release of “Jurassic Park” some 40 years later. After a few wildly successful travelogs, Cinerama partnered with MGM to make their first narrative films with big Hollywood stars. 1962’s “How The West Was Won” and “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.” In 2008 “West” was restored and released on blu-ray, fans hoped “Brothers Grimm” may see the same restoration, and now, that has come to pass. Much like “West,” “Brothers Grimm” was another packed with stars, lavish presentation which MGM assigned to their main fantasy filmmaker, producer/director George Pal. Based on a book about The Brothers Grimm, “Wonderful World” is a semibiographical film that tells the story of the brothers trying to make their first book of fairy tales, mixed in with three sequences telling one of their stories. It’s a fun, light enjoyable fantasy yarn of the early 1960s, but watching a Cinerama film at home you must keep your expectations a curve because you can’t fully translate that massive screen experience to the home theater. You can get close, and Warner Brothers, parenting with Cinerama,

That’s all for this week, don’t be surprised if both these titles make best of year lists come December. Just when you think Warner Achieve can’t top themselves, they do, these are two of the best titles yet from them. “A Star is Born” has been filmed many Pick each one up for your collection as times over the year, four times in total, soon as possible.
