The Pro-Art Association in partnership with the Southwest Virginia Museum and the Appalachian African American Cultural Center present Let’s Give a Party, a musical and historical event celebrating the life and legacy of Piedmont Blues musician and Big Stone Gap native Carl Martin.
Martin made his earliest recordings as a member of several groups, including the Four Keys, the Tennessee Chocolate Drops, and the Wandering Troubadours. He also performed in the trio Martin, Bogan, and Armstrong, helping keep alive the AfricanAmerican old-time string band tradition in Appalachian music. In celebration and honor of Martin’s lasting legacy, Sparky & Rhonda Rucker will perform selections from the music of Carl Martin and others on Saturday, April 2nd at 6:00 PM in the Goodloe Center on the campus of Mountain Empire Community College. For over fifty years, Sparky and Rhonda Rucker have performed throughout the U.S. as well as overseas, singing songs and telling stories from the American folk tradition. They are internationally recognized as leading musicians, authors, and storytellers. The duo accompanies themselves with fingerstyle picking and bottleneck blues guitar, blues harmonica, old-time banjo, piano, spoons, and bones. Sparky and Rhonda have performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival as well as NPR’s All Things Considered, Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, and Morning Edition. Their recording, Treasures & Tears,
was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award, and their music is also included on the Grammynominated anthology, Singing Through the Hard Times.
patrons to wear a mask for the duration of the performance. Pro-Art partners with a variety of venues, therefore individuals with mobility issues are encouraged to call or email the Pro-Art office to make arrangements for parking. For evolving conditions related to the global pandemic, inclement weather, or similar unforeseen circumstances, patrons are encouraged to visit proartva.org or call 276-376-4520 for up-to-date information.
In conjunction with Saturday evening’s concert, the Southwest Virginia Museum and the Appalachian African-American Cultural Center will present an exhibit highlighting the musical contributions of Carl Martin alongside nearly a dozen other notable African-American musicians from Southwest Virginia, spanning the period from the 1920’s to present day. The exhibit will include photographs featuring pianists Richard Lomax of Osaka and Spike Carson of Lee County, and will also feature Earl Gilmore’s guitar on display. Gilmore was a blues and gospel singer, piano player, and lifelong resident of Clinchco in Dickenson County.
Pro-Art’s mission is to promote the arts and expand accessibility to cultural experiences for residents and students in Wise, Lee, and Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton. For more information about our planned performances, please visit proartva.org. You can find the Pro-Art Association on social media @ProArtVA.
This celebration is brought to you in partnership with the Southwest Virginia Museum and the Appalachian AfricanAmerican Cultural Center. Tickets are $10 at the door for admission to the concert and exhibit, and all children and students are free. Pro-Art season tickets will be honored for this performance. For the safety of everyone attending, Pro-Art and the Southwest Virginia Museum request

This fundraiser will benefit Kathy Seymore “Halfpint” in having a liver transplant. She has been diagnosed with Cirrhosis (said to be caused by medicine for diabetes) and also has Hepatopulmonary Syndrome - an uncommon condition that affects the lungs of people with advanced liver diesease. This is caused by blood vessels in the lungs expanding and increasing in number, making it hard for red blood cells to properly absorb oxygen. Kathy is currently on 5 liters of oxygen. Without this transplant she has been given 6 mo. -1 year to live. She has to have her deductable of $5200 just to be put on the transplant list and she has to live in Durham, NC close to Duke Hospital for up to 2 months. She is drawing a small disability check, but has rent and utilities here and will have them in Durham as well. She is 58 years of age and drove a truck nearly 30 years until she started driving the Marsh Blood Mobile and doing phlebotomy work for them. Marsh Blood Mobile will be giving back to Kathy with every pint donated. For more info or anyone willing to sponser please contact:

“Volunteer State” License Plate Design Contest Announced by Rocky Mount State Historic Site An exciting new opportunity that benefits Rocky Mount State Historic Site, is now taking applications! An open design contest has been launched to select artwork for the newest license plate featuring Tennessee’s most notable tagline, “The Volunteer State.” Following a contest in which the public is invited to submit design concepts, and a campaign to secure commitments from purchasers, Tennesseans should have the option of purchasing a “Volunteer State” license plate for their vehicle, motorcycle, RV, or boat. A specialty license plate is an excellent opportunity for a non-profit like Rocky Mount to raise much needed funds apart from the state’s budget, while also providing Tennesseans with new ways to show pride in their state. “We are optimistic that someone will capture the essence of the Volunteer state in a way that leads to robust statewide sales of the plate, and creates a revenue source to support Rocky Mount’s ongoing effort to tell its compelling story,” said Steve Darden, a Rocky Mount trustee who is helping lead the effort. If you or anyone you know has any artistic or design experience or interest in Tennessee history, we encourage you to go to volunteerstatetag.org or call (423) 538-7396. The contest winner will have their artwork featured on the official Tennessee/Rocky Mount specialty license plates, receive a creator’s award of $200, and a 1 year free membership to Rocky Mount. Most will recognize the nickname from the University of Tennessee’s sports teams, as they have been known as “The
Volunteers” since 1905, but it is older than that, and means much more than athletics. The history behind Tennessee’s nickname dates back to both the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. The ‘Volunteers’ name is derived from the over 1,500 patriotic Tennesseans who fought under General Andrew Jackson, at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. The same Volunteer spirit carried on when the Mexican-American War broke out in 1835. Rocky Mount played a significant role in our nation’s westward movement before Tennessee achieved statehood in 1796, serving as the capital of the Southwest Territory from 1790 to 1792.
3507 E Andrew Johnson Hwy Greeneville TN 711 Asheville Hwy Greeneville TN 423-946-1500 We install within 7-10 business days after template. Family owned and operated. 100’s of colors available.
The Volunteer state spans 500 miles from Mountain City to Memphis. Rocky Mount hopes to promote a license plate that will honor our unique, diverse, and remarkable state. crossroads in Shady Valley, turn left on 133 to Backbone Rock and don’t forget to blow as you go by our house, turn right in Damascus, VA on 58 to Mountain City then up the tail of The Snake back to Shady Valley, turn left at the cross roads to Stoney Creek down to Elizabethton. For us that is The Snake. You have now hit all 3 mountains, the valley and 489 curves. Grade Information: Maximum uphill grade = 14%, Maximum downhill Grade = -9.6%, Average grade = 2.9%. Johnson County is the home of the famous Snake 421. One of the best motorcycle and sport car routes. Motorcyclist from all over have been traveling to Johnson County Tennessee to ride “The Snake”. Packed with incredible mountain scenery. There are challenging sections and some peaceful stretches. It meanders along flowing creeks in a national forest, has tight curves on winding roads, sweeping curves through rolling farmlands. The Snake provides some of the best motorcycle touring in the southeastern United States. Along your route there are many things you can do, places to eat or just stop a take a picture. As you start up the snake you can stop the marina or just pull over at Holton Lake and take a few pictures. Once you are in Shady Valley always stop at the Shady Valley County Store. They have stickers, koozies, shirts, drinks, food, snacks, and every weekend Chris the owner is grilling outside and has live music. Don’t forget to give Chris a hard time after all he is Pork’s cousin. Then roll down to Backbone Rock (the world’s shortest tunnel), a great place to hike and take pictures, roll to Damascus VA home of the Virginia Creeper Trail. In Damascus you will find cabins to rent, the Rolling Mills hotel and bar with outdoor sitting overlooking a waterfall, downtown has the Appalachian Heritage Distillery, The Damascus Diner, 7 Trails Bar & Grill (one of our favorites), Wicked Chicken Wing House & Tavern and Off the Beaten Path Ice Cream Bar. When you get to Mountain City you will find Mike’s Bar-B-Q & Sub Shop, Farmers Barbeque & Grill, Church Street Station, Sherry & JP’s Chicken House, La Familia Mexican Restaurant, Poblanos Mexican Grill. When you leave Mountain City, you have two ways to travel, you can head back up the tail of The Snake to Shady Valley turn left and head up the mountain then down to Stoney Creek. I would suggest that once you get to the overpass turn right and head to the 19E Pit Stop Bar and Deli 1.5 miles to say howdy to Tammy the owner, some of the coldest beer around and great sandwiches or you can turn onto highway 67/91 at the light (road becomes 321), stay on highway 321/67 &19E at Hampton and ride beside beautiful Watauga Lake. You can go hiking at Laurel Falls on highway 321 in Hampton or in Butler check out the overlook at Watauga Lake. AS ALWAYS BE SAFE AND KEEP YOUR KNEES IN THE BREEZE!!!!!!

Unless you have the luxury of living under a rock these days, you probably heard about the now infamous Variety Magazine video interview with the Kardashians. Kim K imparted her humble, sage words of business wisdom upon us blue collar peons, informing that the key to success we’re all missing is to “get off our f***ing a** and work. No one wants to work anymore.” While initially I must admit I was incensed by this message, particularly considering the over-privileged, out-of-touch and tone deaf source, upon further review and recent events it seems Professor Kimmy might be onto something. It kinda feels like people actually don’t want to work anymore…at anything.

Nice things are great to have regardless, but luxury purchases are so much more satisfying knowing the money I’m spending was earned through my own hard work. Those little hits of dopamine I get from people liking carefully curated photos of my “life” on Instagram are ok, but they’re no comparison to the real, gut-busting laughter I’ve shared with my best friend of 30 years in my living room. And while I’ve been on plenty of dates with successful people who would be a fine companion, none of them stacked up to the organic, animal magnetism I felt in a past relationship and I’m no longer interested in anything less. So Kim K, it seems some of us DO want to work, because we know the reward in it. I just wish more people would get the memo, because I would currently grade my peers with an F for Effort.

"The Last Duel" wasn't one of the films I was in a rush to see, until recently. Plus, in today's world of cinema unless it's a major event movie ("The Batman" and the recent Spider-Man film come to mind) I see no reason to rush to the theater to see just any movie, even though I am a fan of seeing movies on the big screen. As we know, the pandemic just changed viewing habits. I long for the day again when I can feel completely comfortable entering a theater without a mask while sitting almost elbow to elbow with fellow movie fans. Those comments aside, I finally decided to watch "The Last Duel" which features Jason Bourne, Kylo Ren and Batman in the featured roles. In other words Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Ben Affleck. The film is a historical action/drama and is based on a 2004 novel and takes place in medieval France. Damon stars as Jean de Carrouges, a knight who toward the end of the film challenges a former friend named Jacques Le Gris (Driver) to a duel to the death after Jean's wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer) accuses Jacques of raping her. The film is unique in the aspect that it presents the story in three separate chapters as presented by the characters of Jean, Jacques and Marguerite. The story begins

by showing the friendship between Jean and Jacques and how after serving together in the Caroline War, they pledge allegiance to Count Pierre d'Alecon (Affleck), who was named Jean's overlord by King Charles VI. Not long after they served together, Jean is dealing with poor finances, and in order to restore his riches, marries Marguerite on the promise of a large dowry. While the marriage appears to be a good one, the dowry doesn't work out as the properties and land of Marguerite's late father are seized in order to settle unpaid back taxes. The lack of the expected monetary funds, forces Jean to take part in a military campaign for money. As the story continues, Jean introduces Marguerite to Jacques at a festival, where the two friends reunite, but the meeting leaves Jacque in awe of Marguerite and her beauty. When Jean heads off to Paris to collect funds for his effort in a battle in Scotland, Marguerite is left at the castle with Jean's mother and the servants. However, one day Jean's mother has an outing and takes all the servants with her leaving Marguerite alone at the castle. Jacques discovers the object of his affection has been left alone and plots to enter the home of Jean with the help of his aide. Jacques, using deception, manages to enter Jean's home and this is when the incident occurs. The only chapter that presents Marguerite enjoying the encounter is the one told by Jacques. When Jean returns from Paris, Marguerite tells her husband of what happened with Jacques and he confronts Jacques, who denies the allegations. Jean does not believe his friend and turns on him and goes before King Charles VI demanding a duel to the death for the sake of justice. Before the duel is approved, Jacques stands trial six months later, where a now pregnant Marguerite continues to stand by her accusation, despite
the fact the court implies Jacques is the father of her child. We finally get to the duel, but before the duel Marguerite is informed she will be burned alive if her husband fails to win the duel, which all see God as playing a role in who the winner will be. I loved the setting of the film, which took place at various locations in France and Ireland. The actors are all well placed in their roles with Damon and Driver proving to be formattable on screen friends/foes. One
problem I had with the film was the unfortunate haircut of Affleck, whose dyed blonde locks proved to be a distraction, as did his "frat boy as Count" performance. Affleck aside, "The Last Duel" is entertaining enough for those who enjoy medieval flicks. Now playing on HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video and other outlets. (Rated R) 🛡🛡🛡

The United States of America may have been born on July 4th, 1776, but the idea of American self-government began a full four years earlier in 1772, and it happened in what is now Elizabethton, Tennessee. Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will celebrate the birth of American democracy with a special event on Saturday, April 9th commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Watauga Association. In 1763 a royal proclamation had forbidden settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. As British rule became increasingly oppressive in the colonies, people began to move west across the Blue Ridge. Being outside the authority of the 13 colonies, the settlers in the Watauga River valley saw the need for law and order and joined together to create a compact to “govern and direct for the common good of the people”. In the spring of 1772, meeting under a large sycamore tree by the Doe River in what is now Elizabethton, TN, settlement leaders drafted articles of governance for the Watauga Association. They negotiated a land lease, and later a purchase, with the Cherokee, formed a court and a militia, and organized the defense of the settlement in 1776. The Watauga Association existed as a body of democratic self-rule for 5 years before being annexed by North Carolina in 1777 as
sets a dangerous example to the people of America of forming governments distinct from and independent of His Majesty’s authority.” In later years historians would call the Watauga Association the first free and independent community on the continent.
It proved that Americans could govern themselves, and four years later the 13 colonies would declare independence from Great Britain. If you would like to join in the celebration of this historic occasion, come to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton, TN on Saturday, April 9th. The commemoration
will begin at 10:00 am in the Fort Watauga Amphitheater with a special ceremony which will include a wreath laying, a proclamation by the Carter County Commission, and a presentation of the Watauga Association scene from Tennessee’s official outdoor drama, Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals. Following the morning program
demonstrations, militia drill, and much more. The event will close at 4:00 pm. Also, as part of the celebration, commemorative tours of the historic Carter Mansion will be offered. Built in 1775, the Carter Mansion is Tennessee’s oldest frame-house and was built by Col. John Carter who served as the Chairman of the Watauga Association. Enjoy the detailed 18th century interiors, hand carved moldings, and over-mantle paintings as you visit this elegant frontier home. Tours will be at 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, & 2:30 pm. Admission is free, but you must register at www.tnstateparks.com/parks/ events/sycamore-shoals. The John and Landon Carter Mansion is located at: 1031 Broad Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.

On Thanksgiving 1976, at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, seminal rock group The Band performed their final concert. It was initially going to be a farewell show, then it morphed into something much bigger, with guest performers, and even feeding some 5,000 people a full Thanksgiving dinner before the performance. As talk began to brew about how to best document the event, The Band’s Robbie Robertson contacted Martin Scorsese about filming it.
Scorsese weaves the story of The Band together in-between segments from the concert, with interview pieces featuring members of the legendary group. Initially, the idea was that The Band would just stop touring and keep releasing albums, but in the end, it wound up serving as a farewell for the whole venture.

“The Last Waltz” was originally released in Dolby Stereo. A process that was able to take a two-channel stereo track and, with the use of a decoder, extract that into a fourchannel surround mix. Dolby later adapted this technology for the home as Dolby Surround. Anyone who has a surround sound receiver in their home can hear “The Last Waltz” in the original 1978 mix. It’s one of three sound mixes included. Two mixes from 2001, supervised and approved by Robbie Robertson are included. One is a standard stereo mix, the other is a 5.1 surround sound mix. These are presented in lossless, high resolution, DTS-HD Master Audio. There’s no real “loser” between these three mixes,
but of the three I liked the 5.1 mix the best. The 1978 Dolby Stereo mix is fine, but the surround channel is used on the conservative side. The 5.1 mix truly envelopes you with the mix, it’s loud, it’s immersive, and makes you feel like you’re right down right front at the concert. Several bonus features are included, some ported over from previous releases of the film. New to this edition is an interview with Martin Scorsese by critic David Fear. Ported over are two audio commentaries, one with Scorsese and Robertson, then a second with members of The Band, the production crew, and other performers. A documentary about the making of the film from
2002 is included, as are outtakes, a 1978 interview with Robertson and Scorsese, then a trailer and TV spot for the film. If you’re a fan of The Band, this is a must-own. If you’re a fan of movies, this is a must-own. If you’re a fan of music, this is a must-own. This has been one of the most anticipated titles from Criterion. It lives up to the anticipation and then some. This is a stunning, definitive edition of one of the greatest movies of all time. Pick up a copy of this for your home library today. You won’t regret it. See you next week.
