NOTE
FROM THE
PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! We are so excited to present this week’s issue about Tattoos and permanent make up! Our sales rep Jessica really enjoyed working with everyone showcasing in this one. Tattoos are so interesting and I really enjoyed looking at these ads along with all of the pictures we received on social media. We also loved hearing some of the meanings behind these works of art. I lost my beloved Nannie 3 years ago and I carry a Hummingbird tattoo on my shoulder to honor her memory and favorite bird. I encourage you to look over the Tattoo shops/artists in this issue if you have ever thought of getting a tattoo. There is a tattoo festival coming in May and we will be showing you more about that in the upcoming weeks. If a tattoo isn’t for you maybe you would be interested in permanent make up and you can find that in here too. Support these local businesses please! You will also notice we have several local people running for public offices in this issue. There will be more of those in the month of April. These are paid ads and not a show of our support to any one person. We are giving them an opportunity to show you a little about themselves and what they support. I will be doing some live interviews with some of them next week. Please educate yourself and exercise your right to vote. If you or your organization has an event coming that you would like to advertise please let us know. We would love to work with you and we really appreciate your support of our local arts and entertainment paper.

y Hi, My name is Scooby. I am an American Dingo/Shepherd mix and very handsome I’d say !!! I’m very shy and skittish and I would like a new home that is kinda quiet because I’m scared of sudden loud noises. So I would rather be around older
kids instead of young ones and maybe a female dog. I don’t like a leash around my neck and I will need a fenced-in yard. Oh, and I’m housetrained !!! I weigh 88 lbs, have been neutered and I’m current on vaccinations. Bday 7-12-20.

The new lady American Bald Eagle residing in the Johnson City nest viewed by thousands via one of the East Tennessee State University Department of Biological Sciences’ Eagle Cams now has a name. The new female eagle who is currently incubating her first clutch of eggs at the Johnson City next site has been named Jolene, courtesy of Eagle Cam viewers. After several weeks of sorting through names submitted by nearly 500 eagle watchers, a committee submitted the top 10 choices to viewers on the ETSU Eagle Cams Facebook page, and “Jolene” was the winner. The background for the viewers’ choice is related to the history of this nest and the birds who have made it their home and raised their chicks for the past 13 years, according to Dr. Fred Alsop, director of the Eagle Cams project. True to the nature of Bald Eagles,
the original pair, Noshi and Shima, male and female, respectively, remained a faithful pair, adding materials to this nest and raising one to three baby eagles annually until Nishi disappeared in late May 2020. Shima completed the nesting season fledgling her chicks while a new male eagle began to frequent the nest site. In the 2020-21 nesting season, the new male, named Boone by viewers, was clearly Shima’s new mate and they produced three eggs together. Early in the 2021-22 nesting season, when Shima and Boone began preparations around the nest tree and nest, a third adult eagle became a more and more frequent visitor to the Johnson City nest site. The day came late last fall when Shima was no longer with Boone and it became clear that he had selected the new lady as his mate. Together, Boone and his new companion have produced two eggs, which should hatch in a couple of weeks.
Based on the lyrics of the famous Dolly Parton song, “Jolene,” in which a wife begs a beautiful competitor not to take her man, voting Eagle Cam viewers felt they had seen this plea from a mother take wing as they watched this little wildlife drama play out on their mobile devices, television screens and computer monitors. Meanwhile, at the Bluff City nest, Frances and Eugene have become the proud parents of two eaglets that
hatched last week. To watch the Eagle Cams and learn more about the eagles and their lifestyles, visit etsu.edu/cas/biology/eagle-cam/. Free livestreaming is available on almost any mobile device or computer. Information is also available on the Eagle Cams’ major sponsors, and a link for giving toward this ongoing project is provided.

Tattoos Are Our Passion at Sacred Ink Studios With a lifetime of artistry in his repertoire, Troy Hicks opened Sacred Ink in 2001. As one of the oldest tattoo shops in the area, Sacred Ink is grateful for the clients that have remained loyal through generations. The Sacred Ink crew values each of our clients whether it is art the size of a dime or an entire backpiece, every client is important. We take pride in our professional environment as all our supplies and equipment are sterile and opened in front of our clients to ensure peace of mind. Our clients’ safety and wellbeing is our first priority regardless of the service being rendered. As a fully licensed tattoo and piercing salon, our artists and piercers are also individually licensed and certified in CPR and First Aid, as well as Bloodborne Pathogen Training which satisfies the necessary regulations of Virginia. Sacred Ink has over 50 years of experience in the tattoo and piercing
world. Allen Wood, Jeremiah Thacker, Todd Blevins, Troy and Pink Hicks are here to bring your body art to life. We take tremendous pride in knowing that we strive to transform your idea from thought to skin without any attitude or negative vibe. Your tattoo or piercing experience will be free of arrogance, attitude and condescending communications. We aim to maintain a kind and familyoriented atmosphere which makes us an exception in the tattoo industry. We have a full service crew including 4 tattoo artists, piercer and a shop manager. All of our artists are versatile in their abilities and able to tattoo a multitude of styles. You can count on us to be honest with you about your design, size and placement. It is our goal for your tattoo to not only look good on the day you receive it but also to hold the color and design well 20 years later. Sacred Ink believes strongly in giving back to the community. This year
we will celebrate our 6th year of our Christmas toy drive. With the help of our clients and friends, we have been able to provide Christmas gifts to hundreds of poverty stricken families in the area. This outreach continues to grow every year so if you want to be a part of this, come by and see us for details! Sacred Ink has also been a financial contributor to the Bridge of Hope Street Ministry for over 10 years. by Jessica Carlisle The art of Tattooing started out being used to represent symbols of tribal identity and kinship, as well as a badge of bravery and beauty! As time went on and tattoos became more popular they were also considered to represent certain social or wealth status. Some have even been known to believe that tattoos possess magical or apotropaic abilities! For most, getting a tattoo can also be considered the perfect way to document personal or communal history that can be remembered and admired forever! A Tattoo Style is the general look of the tattoo, rather than the subject, image, writing, etc that is being depicted in the tattoo. The different styles of tattoos can give even the exact same subject a completely different look and feel all together. Sketch Style Usually black like a pencil, can be done in color also- like a colored pencil. This style gives a clean and very authentic look.

Portrait Style Is very realistic looking and takes a highly skilled artist to be able to create. Portraits can be of a loved one or of someone famous and can be done in color or in black and gray. Black and Grey Style The most common style which focuses on shading and is often referred to as the “OG of tattoo styles”. Water Color Style Very delicate and beautiful looking with minimal to no outline, the colors just flow over the skin. Tribal Style Involves elaborate patterns and can range in size from small to entire body. Popular styles include Polynesian, Native American and more. Japanese Style Stylistic and great for telling stories with ink. This style has a distinct look and uses symbolism to show their meaning. Neo Traditional Style Similar to Traditional Style but with a bit of a twist! Neo Traditional Style consists of much finer lines, and is mixed with more bold and non-traditional colors. This style has more true-to-life Illustrated qualities; as to create Utopia Tattoo Company 1393 Volunteer Pkwy suite 8, Bristol, TN (423) 652-0379 facebook.com/utopiabristoltn

tattoos that have the “classic feel” with a taste of “the new” at the same time! Traditional/ Old School Style Bold black lines and bright colors are some of the trademarks of this classic style! Cosmetic make- up artists are making it now possible to wake up every day with a face full of make- up! Some of the different permanent Cosmetics offered are… Microblading which is the most popular form of permanent make-up; essentially just a fancy name for eyebrow tattoo! This modern technique simulates individual hair strokes for a natural look; also referred to as brow feathering or micro shading. Lip Blushing is a simple wash of sheer color across the entire lip; in other words a lip tattoo or lip tinting. Permanent Eyeliner to give the appearance of fuller lashes. Traditional eyeliner tattoos are placed right above the lash line. Lash Enhancement sits within the lash line for a more subtle, natural look. Scar Camouflage a tattoo on the skin of flesh colored pigment to to mask a scar or stretch marks to the skin.

I don’t know what algorithm my social media existence has slipped into, but I’m currently being bombarded by daily suggested posts of the harsh motivational variety. I’m sure you’ve also been unwittingly victimized by these “Hard Truth” post threads that typically start with things like “I don’t know who needs to hear this today but…” and “X Hard Truths I Wish I’d Known Sooner.” Since most of the info that follows these provocative statements seems to be just common knowledge to me, I’ve decided to curate my own list of hard lessons learned through experience in the event it might be news to you, because I certainly wasn’t expecting the majority of things life has thrown at me so far. And while some of it might seem doom-n-gloom at first glance, I can assure you there’s always a silver lining just on the other side. So in all my infinite wisdom and centuries on this earth as a 600 year old spinster, here is my personal list of “Hard Truths.”

If you are looking for a film the entire family can enjoy I suggest "Rescued by Ruby". Yes, the film features a dog named Ruby and I will state right away the dog does not die. Now you can exhale. The film is a biographical drama that follows the story of Rhode Island State Trooper Daniel O'Neil (Grant Gustin of "The Flash" tv show) and his efforts to become part of the K-9 search and rescue team. His previous attempts have failed, but his luck is about to change thanks to a shelter dog he will soon come in contact with. The dog in question is Ruby, a half border collie that remains at the local shelter despite many attempts to find a permanent home for her. Ruby is extremely hyperactive and hard to control, thus her being returned to the shelter time and again. Not only has Ruby faced much rejection, but so has Daneil who has failed 7 times in his efforts to become part of the K-9 unit. During his latest attempt to be a K-9 officer, Daniel learns there are no more funds to import any more German

Shepherds, the breed most often used on search and rescue teams. When Daniel learns his wife Melissa (Kaylah Zander) is pregnant with their second child, he becomes even more determined to try out again for the program, which will mean an increase in his salary. When Daniel visits the shelter to find a dog he can train for the program, he meets Ruby, who takes an immediate liking to him, something she has not always felt with others. At this point in the film Daniel begins the challenging process of training Ruby, and let's just say the effort is lessthan-successful. Even though Ruby doesn't adapt to the training, she is now in her forever home with the O'Neals. Just as Daniel has given up on his dream, Melissa devises a way for Daniel to effectively train Ruby, who must have the right temperament, focus, compassion and calmness to be part of the K-9 unit. Along with the challenges Ruby faces, Daniel has dealt with his own issues of dyslexia and hyperactivity, but was able to overcome them to become a Rhode Island State Trooper. I will not reveal how Daniel ends up training Ruby, as to not give too much away, but Daniel's training of Ruby eventually helps him see he still has obstacles to overcome. Of course, without seeing the film, you know Ruby will succeed, and plays a huge role in two police investigations. The dog that stars in the title role, is a rescue dog, and according to post credits information was about to be put down
before being rescued by the filmmakers. The post credit information also shows photos of the real O'Neal family and the real Ruby, making the film even more special. I really enjoyed the scenes between Daniel and Ruby, who must learn to completely trust each other and learn how to work as a unit. The dog playing Ruby is amazing, and when she looks at Daniel with those big eyes, you wish you could hug and pet her. Gustin is great in the role of O'Neal, and he has several moments in the film that just may break your heart.
I am used to seeing Gustin in the role of TV's Flash, so it was refreshing to see him in the role of a different type of hero. The supporting cast is also great, and features Scott Wolf of "Party of Five" fame as Daniel's boss Matt Zarrella. "Rescued by Ruby" is a heartwarming film showing the lives of real life heroes, and will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy thanks to the amazing Ruby. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated TV-G)

As the warm weather appeared and for a moment it seemed that Winter was behind us—oh how you deceive us Tennessee—a friend decided to have a little get-together at their new home. It was an older home that needed some work, they bought it for a song, and since this one friend had leaned heavily into watching old episodes of “Property Brothers” they decided they were going to renovate the house into something truly spectacular. The house was beautiful inside, a little too clean for my tastes, the walls were so white and pure that I felt every light coming in through the windows reflected off them. They didn’t go with an open floor plan, which I was happy to see as personally, I find that kind of dull. The kitchen was the most impressive part of it. A large island with a stove in the center. A tall, stainless steel refrigerator. White cabinets with granite countertops. All accented by modern light fixtures. It was beautiful. As the house was practically taken down to the studs, my friend did a lot of updating to the inner workings, including running ethernet cable throughout the house so the smart home infrastructure they planned

button.
Touching it caused a wand to move into place from the center back of the bowl. Before I knew it, a strong jet of warm water shot out and hit my face. I quickly was trying to press buttons to get it to stop. I hit the “close” one I asked where the nearest one was, my and that made the seat come down, host, told me to check out the one in the water was still hitting my face. I hit the master bedroom “It’s the coolest it again and that made the lid come bathroom you’ll ever see!” they told down, but the water never stopped me with great glee. “Oh, cool. Thanks!” and splashed around the area as the I said, then they pointed me back in toilet was closing. the direction of the master bedroom. I grabbed some toilet paper and Walking into the bathroom it looked dabbed at my face, then hit the rinse like any regular bathroom, but there were a large number of light switches button again, I heard the water turn off. My face was still wet so I manually on the wall, about six. lifted the lid and hit the “dry” button. I pressed one to turn on lights, and The wand appeared again, but this instead, I got blue-hued LED “mood time it was some warm air, but not lighting.” Lord knows the thing I’ve been missing the most from my bathroom experiences has been lighting to help evacuation. Whilst I was in the bathroom washing my hands I looked over towards the toilet to the left of me. There was a backlit LED touch screen panel on the wall beside the toilet, if you were seated it would be to your right. Curiously, I walked over to the panel after washing my hands and looked it over. There was an array of six virtual buttons, all labeled. In order, from left to right, top to bottom, they read Lift, Close, Heat, Flush, Rinse, and Dry. Most of the buttons seemed fairly obvious. I pressed “lift” and the lid to the toilet opened. As this happened more “mood lighting” appeared. A gentle green light on the wall from behind the tank, it seemed to be coming from the back of the tank. I pressed “lift” again and this time the seat of the toilet opened, the color of the lights didn’t change, I was a tiny bit disappointed. Heat, I assumed, would warm up the seat so I left it alone. Flush was also an obvious one. I pressed “Rinse” wondering if it was some kind of self-cleaning mode. Nope. It was for the built-in bidet that stays hidden till it’s called into use. I say this as had I known it had a hidden bidet, I wouldn’t have pressed that
enough to reach my face. I looked around for a towel that wouldn’t be noticed and opened a cabinet. I grabbed a hand towel and dried my face off, then mopped up around the toilet. I wasn’t sure what to do with the damp towel in my hand. I didn’t see a hamper of any kind I could toss it into, so walking back through the master bedroom I tossed it under the bed and casually made my way back to the kitchen where everyone was. It wasn’t my most graceful moment, but also I never thought I’d be confounded by the technological advances of a toilet. There’s a first time for everything. See you next week.
