Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Comes to Southwest Virginia The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Theater Department is at work on its spring production of the hit Broadway musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The musical is based on the 1973 play by Christopher Bond, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Hugh Wheeler. The production opens April 27 in the Gilliam Center for the Arts Black Box Theater on the UVA Wise campus in conjunction with the Pro-Art Association’s 45th season. Featuring a twenty-two-member cast and crew, the musical thriller focuses on the murderous machinations of Sweeney Todd (Ashlyn Mullins), a vengeful English barber and his accommodating landlady Mrs. Lovett (Annie Hay). The gruesome story follows the barber as he plots his revenge against the corrupt Judge Turpin (Luke Sage), who sent him to prison on false charges and subsequently proceeded to destroy Todd’s family. Upon his release, Sweeney Todd returns to London with a vengeance that quickly

turns indiscriminately murderous, broadening to include numerous citizens of Victorian London’s corrupt society. Todd’s actions lead his resourceful accomplice Mrs. Lovett to cover up the murders by baking the victims into meat pies. The darkly comic story explores the motivations for, and consequence of, revenge. The Tony Award-winning play opened on Broadway in 1979 and in London’s West End in 1980. The infamous character’s legacy can be traced back to the penny dreadful serial The String of Pearls: A Romance published in a weekly magazine during the winter of 1846-47. Set in 1785, the story featured as its principal villain a certain Sweeney Todd and included all the plot elements used in later versions. The story was turned into a play before the ending had even been published, and the character Sweeney Todd quickly became familiar across Victorian England. Christopher Bond’s 1973 adaptation introduced a psychological backstory and motivation to Todd’s crimes.

Stephen Sondheim first conceived of a musical version of the story after he saw a production of Bond’s play at Theatre Royal Stratford East. Pulitzer prize-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim (19302021) was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century musical theater. The late Sondheim began his career by writing the lyrics for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959). His best-known works include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), Sweeney Todd (1979), Sunday in the Park with George (1984), and Into the Woods (1987). Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will run April 27-30 with performances beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the public or free with presentation of a UVA Wise I.D. Through partnership with the Pro-Art Association, Pro-Art season ticket holders are also free to attend. Tickets may be purchased in person before the shows or at

etix.com (service fee applies). The Box Office opens one hour prior to the start of each performance. In accordance with current UVA Wise masking guidelines, masks are optional for patrons in attendance. Given the dark themes and staged violence of the musical, parents are encouraged to use discretion in bringing children to the production. Pro-Art’s mission is to promote the arts and expand accessibility to cultural experiences for residents and students in Wise, Lee, and Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton. For more information about planned performances or to purchase season tickets, please visit proartva.org. The UVA Wise Theater Department is devoted to theater as a unified art form that blurs the lines between visual-art, story and music by fusing performance, design, and engineering in a single, meaningful experience. For more information about the program, please visit uvawise.edu/academics/majorsminors/theater.

This summer, paleontologists at the Gray Fossil Site and Museum are going to be busy with the tasks of excavating and preserving fossils, and they’re looking for volunteers to help out.

On Saturday, April 30, the museum will host a volunteer drive where attendees will learn about the ongoing operations at the site and how they can participate this year. The event will be held from 10 a.m. – noon. The Gray Fossil Site, overseen by the Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology at East Tennessee State University, is all that remains of a five-million-yearold ecosystem that was once home to a variety of ancient plants and animals. Since the discovery of the site in 2000, volunteers have been invaluable contributors to the museum’s work of collecting, cleaning and sorting the site’s many thousands of fossils, from tiny plant seeds and fish bones to massive rhino and mastodon skeletons.

The museum needs volunteers now more than ever to support the crucial process of getting fossils out of the sediment and into museum storage, museum officials said. This year’s volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in the field as well as inside the lab. Volunteer positions will begin in May. After the drive, volunteers can apply by filling out an application form on-site or online. No prior experience with fossils is necessary to apply. Applicants may be as young as 16, and minors will require a guardian’s signature to apply. Volunteers can work three or more hours per week on a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, but positions are limited. Visit etmnh.org/support/volunteer for more information about volunteering. For further questions, contact Shawn Haugrud at haugrud@etsu.edu. The Gray Fossil Site and Museum is located at 1212 Suncrest Drive in Gray.

“As a retired Criminal Court Judge who served Washington, Carter, Johnson, and Unicoi Counties for 16 years, to say the least, I became quite familiar with a lot of lawyers, including the three candidates for General Sessions Judge, Part III. Without question all three are fine folks. However, in my opinion Johnathan stands out with the right mixture of transparency, character, and legal competence you want to see in a courtroom. Many of you have seen the difference a good Judge can make, and I believe Johnathan can make that difference. He will make you an excellent Judge.”

“I’ve worked alongside Johnathan in the Court system for many years. He is exactly the type of person that our community needs as a Sessions Court Judge. Johnathan will bring judicial leadership and the ability to bring others in the community together as we expand the recovery courts and move toward a residential recovery court in East Tennessee. He has the expertise and experience of knowing the problems children and families face and how they impact our region in a larger scale. Johnathan will be a true asset to the people in our region.”

By [https://EzineArticles. com/expert/Bucky_ LaFountain/2154722] Bucky LaFountain Many people associate May 1st with the day when we are to welcome May flowers while saying good bye to Jack Frost’s blistering winds, bone chilling temperatures and its garrison of snowflakes that spent the last few months blanketing everything in site without prejudice. However, this day is also a historical marker, one that helped cultivate modern day workers’ rights. May 1st marks the day that previous generations imprinted as the symbol to celebrate the social effort that helped forge a road towards labor rights and justice, all of which came at a great human cost. Picture waking up and having to go to work in conditions that essentially exploited employees, with no standardized minimum wage protection or definition for what a work day meant in terms

of time spent at work. Imagine a time when employers wouldn’t even imagine having to consider providing health, vision and/or dental care to their employees; a time when the labor force was considered a commodity instead of a valuable human element in the success of a company or enterprise. May Day is a historical workers’ movement that helped build a foundation for the rights that many employees enjoy today, the same rights that many of us take for granted. On May 1st 1886, while many were welcoming the new spring season there were many others that took to the streets to parade and demonstrate for workers’ rights. On this day, according to Time Magazine, there were approximately 200,000 U.S. workers that orchestrated a nationwide strike in an effort to demand an eight hour work day. Chicago, among other major cities, was one of the epicenters of these strikes and protests in an

effort to display the frustrations with the lack of labor rights at the time. However, like many highly charged movements, the Chicago protest became very volatile. In 1938, at Haymarket Square in Chicago, there was a gathering of approximately 3,000 people which focused on protesting in favor of an 8 hour workday. As the last speaker finished his talk there were 180 policemen that marched in to break up the event. The policemen ordered everyone to disperse, and to everyone’s surprise, a bomb exploded within the ranks of those in uniform wounding 67 and killing 7. In an unplanned response the police opened fire on the crowd killing several men and wounding 200. This unfortunate event has forever become part of history and is known as the Haymarket Tragedy. Three years later in 1889, this event was commemorated as an International Holiday for labor.

various protests helped to create a spring board for future movements that paved the way to the rights we have today.

May Day, also known as International Workers Day, is another example of how society took it upon itself to take action in an effort to highlight the injustices within the work environment. The activists who participated in the

May Day comes and goes every year with few ever knowing the underlying story behind this historical event that ultimately impacted working generations to come. So for this year and every year going forward, we should reflect on May First and its historical meaning. Above all we should all hold all those involved in the movement that led to our modern work environment in great esteem and with appreciation for the determined efforts that they made in helping guide society towards a better, safer and more equitable workplace environment. Music to my Ears Ride Hello everyone hope your riding season has been a good one so far. This week I will be giving you the information you need about – Music To My Ears Ride (about 88 miles round trip). Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia are famous for their music. As the home of the legendary Carter Family and the Birthplace of Country Music, this area laid the foundation for America’s modern music scene. Dine at the Burger Bar—a Bristol classic, and the last place where Hank Williams was seen alive, visit the auditorium that June Carter and Johnny Cash called home, and see where the first “country” recordings were made in 1927. Continue your quest for regional history on the Johnson City campus of ETSU where you can explore the Archives of Appalachia to uncover writings, images, and sounds documenting life in southern Appalachia. Our area is rich in history, I have personally got to hang out with June Carter, Johnny Cash, and many more.

Inspirational content can help your audience through tough times. It shows them that you care about them on a personal level. It can bring your audience together through hope for a brighter future. Following the 80/20 rule can help steer content away from being seen as sales versus solutions. The 80/20 rule suggests that 80 percent of content should be helpful to your audience and 20 percent should be sales. This ensures less promotion which instills confidence in your audience. Setting the right mood can make or break your social media presence. Research the perfect mood to create a bond with your audience and leave a lasting impression.

One thing I was not prepared for is just how isolating personal growth can be.

I’ve spent a lifetime doubting myself, feeling like a fraud or undeserving of good things; I guess being conditioned to disappointment is Life is definitely not linear, and it’s becoming increasingly obvious that a natural reaction to being raised without a lot of money. It’s taken me having an active social life is not correlated in any way to success. In 36 years of learning lessons the hard way, hating myself from the inside fact, it’s beginning to seem like the out, expecting the worst, being exact opposite. betrayed by people I loved more Maybe the old saying “misery loves than anything and most importantly, company” runs far deeper than pushing myself to get back up and I realized, because in a rearview crawl forward after every single assessment of my life to date, the setback. People don’t see that times I was at rock bottom or living though, because let’s face it, no one in a way that was unhealthy or selfwants to share their failures. But destructive, I was flush with “friends.” after the most brutal 5 years I could But the toughest moments when I have never imagined, I’ve grown needed people the most or when into a woman who finally accepts I made the hard commitments to herself, knows her worth and won’t improve my life, I had to endure those compromise it, and I’m truthfully times on my own. I try not to let this the happiest I’ve ever been. This circumstance discourage me, but it is mindset of self-love, self-awareness a little disheartening at times. and self-control is finally manifesting in success and inner peace, but not I started a new job on April 4th. I without some loss along the way. was not really seeking employment when this opportunity was presented Success makes insecure people feel to me, but I decided to interview upset. Insecure people don’t want anyway and was made a great offer to see anyone doing better than from a fantastic company that is them; they perceive it as a personal exactly the direction I’ve worked attack. That’s why when you begin toward in my career for the last 15 to make healthier life choices, you’ll years. Unfortunately because of notice people starting to disappear. my past experience with miserable I can find a hundred drinking people, I have been hesitant in buddies but do you know how many sharing this news publicly, even gym friends I have? One-and we though I’m extremely proud of both travel so much for work it’s a myself and want to celebrate what is miracle if we’re able to coordinate 2 probably a milestone moment. I’m workouts a month. Insecure people sad to say, but in my life any time the won’t congratulate you on your pendulum swings in a very positive milestone moments; instead they direction, it tends to swing backward want to remind you of your past self, equally as hard, knocking me on my your past failures, or encourage you butt and teaching me that sharing to fall back into old habits. These successes only leads to very public people are energy leeches and until failure so it’s best to keep my they fix what’s broken in them, they mouth shut. will only derive joy in seeing their “friends” flail around in the same mediocrity right alongside them. I experienced this firsthand last weekend at an industry event for

work. I ran into basically my entire team of former coworkers from a previous company. I loved these guys and only left that job because I financially couldn’t afford to stay, so I was really pumped to see all of them back in the field after taking almost a year off. All my former teammates welcomed me with hugs and congratulations and it felt great to be back doing something I enjoy and still getting to mingle with people I was so close to. It was a little odd that my former managers didn’t approach me, but I just assumed they were busy, as it was definitely a sold-out event. But apparently this was an intentional snub, my former superiors being catty about my new role, instead of being happy to see me stepping up in my career since my amicable departure. The amount of people who wish to see others fail has been such an eye opener. There are folks who are so scared of your potential that they can’t handle seeing you improve. They want to cling to an outdated version of yourself, and no matter what you achieve they will only recognize the messy, chaotic person with whom they were first acquainted. I think it scares them, because when a person finally realizes their own self-worth, they are unstoppable; that is a threat to people who are scared to be left behind. The good news is, this is the only time in your life where trash will take itself out. Keep living a healthy life, believe you deserve the good things when they come, enjoy your successes and then just watch who stays and who goes. Those people who fall off, ghost, pick a fight, or

XO - Kathie

by Kathie Scalf suddenly become “too busy”… let them go in peace. Wish them all the happiness they didn’t want for you. Then most importantly, appreciate those people who are still standing next to you. If there was 1 person who was wiping your tears at your lowest with no ulterior motive, I can just about guarantee that person will still be there to clap for you at your best, and there probably won’t be many of them. But it’s of the utmost importance to learn how to clap for yourself. Be able to wipe your own tears. Be strong enough to stay the course when things fall apart, because you are the captain of your life’s ship, and if the captain doesn’t know how to steer the boat or navigate the waters, the ship sinks. And we all saw Titanic- the captain always goes down with the ship. Here’s to an exciting week of endless opportunities for success and happiness. We’re headed straight for May and already summer 2022 seems like it’s gonna be a good one, even if I’m doing it solo!

The latest version of "Death on the Nile" (the first cinematic version was released in 1978) stars an eclectic cast and is based on the 1937 Agatha Christie novel. The film is a follow up to "Murder on the Orient Express" and once more stars and is directed by Kennth Branagh who returns to the role of famous detective Hercule Poirot. The film begins during World War I as we see a young Poirot using his developing skills of deduction to help win an important battle for his Belgian company. We also see how the war caused him to sport his famous mustache. After we see Poirot in the war, the film flashes forward to a smoky London club in 1937 where our detective sees a performance by blues singer Salome Otterbourne (Sophie Okonedo) and witnesses a passionate dance between Jacqueline de Bellefort (Emma Mackey) and her fiance Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer). Soon Jacqueline's childhood friend, heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Gal Gadot) makes a splashy entrance to the club and is introduced to Simon. Soon Linnet and Simon are in a passionate dance (oops!) at the unexpected encouragement of Jacqueline.

Pop Life

By Ken Silvers theloaferonlineprint @gmail.com

The film then moves forward six weeks later to our primary location of Egypt and the Great Pyramids where Poirot encounter his friend Bouc (Tom Bateman), who has climbed on one of the pyramids, and his mother Euphemia (Annette Benning), a renowned painter. Bouc then invited Poirot to join them at the surprise wedding between Simon and Linnet. At this point we meet Linus Windlesham (Russell Brand), an aristocrat-turned-doctor who happens to be Linnet's former fiance, Andrew (Ali Fazal), Linnet's cousin and trustee, Marie Van Schuuler (Jennifer Saunders), Linnet's godmother socialite, Mrs. Bowers (Dawn French), Marie's nurse, Louise Bourget (Emma Mackey), Linnet's personal maid, the aforementioned Salome, who has been hired to entertain, and Salmoe's niece and business manager Rosalie (Letitia Wright), who was Linnet's classmate and is Bouc's girlfriend. Also showing up is Jacqueline, the disgruntled ex of Simon who is stalking the couple as a form of mental touture. In fear of what Jacqueline might do, the wedding party boards a cruise ship, and sets sail on the Nile River. The group stops at a famous Egyptian landmark where Linnet is nearly crushed by a falling boulder. After this near brush with death, the group returns to the ship where they discover Jacqueline has boarded. Soon after she boards, chaos erupts on the ship, and an overnight murder occurs. Everyone is considered a suspect, with the exception of Simon, and Poirot begins his investigation. Who has the most to gain by the shocking death on board? Poirot questions everyone, and soon another dead body is found on board, and the mystery deepens. The film continues with another shocking death, and, as expected

Poirot reveals the real killer after much deduction and investigation. The film does a masterful job of keeping those of who have never read the novels guessing until the end. I must say I enjoyed this effort more than "Murder on the Orient Express", and the cast in this film played a large role in the fun of this film. Plus, seeing famous British comedians Sauders and French reunited was a thrill and

worth the viewing. The film looks beautiful and the entire cast was wonderful. If you enjoy mystery films based on classic novels, then "Death on the Nile" is worth your time. Now streaming on various outlets including HBO Max and Hulu. (Rated PG-13)

You know those insurance A DLP TV uses a special projection bulb that you have to replace every few years, but the replacement bulbs are getting harder to find. Last year, when it came time to replace the bulb after a five-year run, I had to go with an off-brand bulb. The results were fine, but the new bulb has been in for less than a year and has begun to flicker. The first sign of failure in a DLP bulb. When I put that bulb in, I decided when it went it would be time to replace the TV, instead of chasing down bulbs of diminishing quality. But I, Mr. Technical, can easily pick a new TV for my home theater. “What a simple task this shall be!” I say to myself while looking like an 1800s weightlifter in one of those striped leotards. “Lemme pull up a tech website and see their best TVs guide.” I do a google and next thing you know I’m browsing The Verge and looking over a list of TVs. great deal since 2006. The first thing I see is a lot of chatter about what TV will make my video games look so good I shall weep. These all feature those dreaded words that someone who is looking for a TV that will be used mostly for movies can’t abide. “A lot of motion smoothing processing.” I’m a purist when it comes to image quality. I want my movies to look like movies, not like some third-rate soap opera from 1997. Motion smoothing will do that to a movie. Kill all the cinematic quality. So I keep reading and then I find one that seems perfect, has a custom movie mode and it’s easy to kill off

the motion smoothing without going through 900 different menu screens. Then I started to fall into the weeds. OLED, MiniLED, 4K, 8K(!?), Google TV, Roku TV, WebOS. This is when I said a phrase that made me realize I’m becoming my father. I, at this moment, said aloud: “Can’t you just get a basic TV anymore?”
