Social Sentiments:

Hello Loafer Readers! I hope everyone is having a great week! Mother’s Day is this Sunday and we have featured some moms in this issue. A Mom can be a mother in different ways. I became a Mom by pregnancy, marriage, fostering and adoption. Currently we are at 11 kids in our family. I have learned you do not have to give birth to a child to love and raise them as your own. There is a huge need in our area for foster parents and I would encourage you to get some information if you feel this is something you could do. If you still have your mom or someone who acts as a mother to you I hope you get to spend time with her this weekend. I lost my mom 27 years ago and my grandmother “Nannie” a few years ago. I miss them both very much. Please keep us in mind for your print or digital needs. We appreciate your support very much! Happy Mother’s Day to everyone!

By [https://EzineArticles. com/expert/Dan_ Wickham/1014040]Dan Wickham One’s mother is the one person that you can always rely on in case of any trouble, she is always there no matter what you need. When life looks dark and forbidding, it is one’s mother that one looks to for help and comfort. When one is away from home, one misses the simple pleasures of life that are one’s mother single handed achievement. Right from childhood to when one is old, a mother can never be replaced in a person’s life. The fondest memories that one takes with him/her will be those that are the precious times spent with mother. The most important woman in your life, a mother is someone who is irreplaceable and gives you unconditional love. If you wish to show your mother what she means to you, you might consider doing something special for her on Mother’s Day. Rather than the actual gift, a mother will appreciate the thought behind the effort and the loving gesture. Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the word. It is the one day that you should spend with your mother no matter how far from home you are. If you cannot be physically present make sure that you mail your mother a token of your love and affection. Mother’s Day is usually celebrated in March or

April and was originally devised as a way of honoring one’s mother to repay her for all she has done for. This is one day that you can make your mother feel special, so do not neglect the opportunity.

gift if you do not want to go for the obvious such as flowers. Think hard what your mother would really like and make a decision wisely. You know your mother best and it is your idea that will touch her heart.

There has been a tradition of honoring mothers across the world and for centuries. The tradition started with the ancient Greeks and Romans. They maintained a culture of honoring mothers by dedicating a day to mother worship. Although the Romans worshipped the god, Juno they honored their mothers with gifts on this very special day.

Bring smile to your mom’s face on Mother’s Day. Give her Mother’s Day flowers [http://www.

The holiday is official in the US with President Woodrow Wilson declaring an official holiday on this day, such is the importance of the occasion. When the day was first established in 1912 they day was specifically dedicated to one’s own mother rather than a universal ode to mothers all over the world. It was meant to be very personal with the occasion being kept in the family. Now as people get to spent little time with their families, Mother’s Day is even more important as the day helps you remember the person who is the closest to your heart. You would not have existed without your mother and it is time to thank her for all that she has done for you and make her feel special and appreciated. On the occasion of Mother’s Day there are several things you can do. Put some thought into the

They will look at where their lives might intersect personally and in the community. The goal of each “Conversation that Matters” is for guests and participants to hear real stories, from real neighbors. This monthly series is inspired by the Diversity & Equity Subcommittee at the McKinney Center, and their desire to

Howdy folks hope all is well with you. This week I am going to tell you about the Spelunker Tour Ride (about 60 miles round trip) and as always the ride starts from Johnson City. The directions come from the Southern Dozen handout. Please always be safe and watch other drivers and enjoy your ride. In the early days of colonization, settlers were confronted by Native Americans who seemed to attack and then disappear into thin air. Later, colonists discovered the Native American’s escape route—a cave with a majestic underground river running through it. The cave was used as a hiding place during the Civil War, changed ownership through the years and is now called the Bristol and Appalachian Caverns. On this ride you’ll have the opportunity to see this unique cave and explore an underground labyrinth more than one million years old. Beautiful and majestic Bristol Caverns! and along the banks of the ancient Underground River that carved these remarkable caverns from the hard core of the earth 200 to 400 million years ago. In the frontier days, Indians used the Underground River as an attack and escape route in their raids on settlers. Stealing into the area by way of the Underground River and the caverns, they swooped down on unsuspecting families, then disappeared as if swallowed up by the earth. Appalachian Caverns and Campground, located in Northeast Tennessee, is a glorious example of the majesty of nature. It is the perfect destination to experience amazing natural beauty located deep beneath the Earth's surface. The site features guided tours of the caverns, a campground, picnic area, gem mine, and gift shop. Archaeological evidence released in February of 2006 revealed that the caverns were used by Early Woodland Native Americans over 1300 years ago. The archeologists found burnt firewood located in a fire pit that has been radiocarbon dated to 675 A.D. They also found pottery, arrowheads, and other evidence of habitation. The log cabin located on the property was discovered to have been built in 1777. Historical documents located in the Sullivan County Archives indicate the caverns and cabin were used as a stopover point and shelter during the harsh winter months as they were making their way westward. 1. How do you feel when you use your product or service? Your potential customers could experience the same feelings. Would you be happy to see your users' reactions to your product or service? If you are not happy with the end result, your target audience may pass on it. Start thinking of your product or service from the user's point of view. What should the user gain from the experience? Which part of the intended experience is missing? Thinking as a user allows you to see strengths and weaknesses before they are pointed out by the audience you are trying to reach.

The same mentality should be used on social media. Think about how your audience sees your content. Would you be proud to share it on your personal page? Sharing your content on your personal pages boosts visibility, so if you are uneasy sharing it on your page, engagement will be low, at best. Motivation is the key to engagement. Motivating yourself to see things from the perspective of your audience will motivate your audience to engage with you, your product, or your service.

Tri-Cities Faces and Places Celebrating the people and places of our community! Remembering Our Mothers who are in Heaven this Mother’s Day

by Kathie Scalf

There is a lot to celebrate this weekend! The calendar has aligned in a perfect way so Cinco de Mayo, graduation, Kentucky Derby and Mother’s Day are all falling on the same weekend. That means there’s something for everyone who needs a reason to indulge in good food and drinks! Cinco de Mayo happens to fall on Thursday, which is my favorite excuse for enjoying a long weekend. And while there is a great deal of confusion on what exactly that holiday celebrates, it is actually NOT Mexico’s Independence Day. This day is celebrated (mostly stateside) in honor of a single battle against the French where the Mexican underdogs triumphed. The obvious choice for food and beverage would be tacos and margs. Simple to make, easy to customize and cheap for a crowd, if you’re entertaining for this holiday a taco and margarita bar with all the fixin’s is the way to go. I like to have at least 2-3 protein selections, making seasoned ground beef in the skillet, roasting a pork shoulder in the oven for carnitas, and letting the slow cooker do the work on some chicken while I prepare the rest of the meal. Standard toppings like lettuce, tomato, cheese, and onions are a must, but make sure to add something with flair, like avocado/guac, jalepenos and sour cream. Bowls of chips and a variety of salsas make the perfect aperitif for snacking, and a couple of sides like rice, beans

and Mexican street corn are easy and delicious. For cocktails, make a big pitcher of basic margaritas for self service, then let people customize with flavored fruit syrups and fresh garnishes like lime, cucumber and jalepenos. And always keep a bottle of good reposado tequila on hand for anyone who prefers their spirits neat. The first weekend of May is also always reserved for college grads. If you’re hosting for one of our future’s best and brightest, I love the idea of a barbecue. The weather this time of year is perfect for outdoor entertaining, so fire up the grill for burgers and dogs with your favorite sides, fill a large cooler with icy cold beers and seltzers and relax. You can fancy the atmosphere up a bit with a custom cake from a local bakery and make that the centerpiece of the soiree. And if you have a fire pit, set up a s’mores bar for toasting when the sun sets. Saturday May 7th is also the annual Kentucky Derby. This horse race has been run without interruption each year since 1875. If you can’t make it up to attend in person, do the next best thing and throw a party at home. Ladies don your biggest hat, gentlemen break out your seersucker suits and decorate everything in roses! A beautiful rose centerpiece will make a great place to gather and sip mint juleps between races. The perfect mint julep is cool and refreshing and MUST be served on crushed ice. In a glass, muddle a few fresh mint leaves and 1-2oz of simple syrup, then over-fill glass with crushed ice. Add 2oz of good quality bourbon and a small splash of cold water to open the flavor of the bourbon a bit. Give a quick stir, garnish with a sprig of

fresh mint and enjoy! Finally, the big finale for a long spring weekend of fun is Mother’s Day. This annual holiday is falling a bit early this year, with the second Sunday of the month landing on May 8th. I love the idea of a Mother’s Day brunch. Of course you can always take the easy route and make reservations at a fancy restaurant, but if you really wanna knock Mom’s socks off, prepare a meal for her. An assortment of quiches, pancakes, fresh fruit, and breakfast meats like sausage and bacon are perfect, and you can include light finger sandwiches and chips as well. A lovely mimosa bar with plenty of bottles of crisp bubbles and a selection of fresh pressed juices are the ultimate compliment to your meal. I love to offer the standard orange juice, but mix it up with pineapple, cranberry, grapefruit, and even watermelon and cantaloupe juice. I have a juicer at home and it’s so easy and delicious to make your favorite fresh squeezed fruit juices at home that taste infinitely better than the pasteurized crap from the supermarket. No matter what, where or who you’re honoring this weekend, party responsibly. Pre-order ubers, drink plenty of water and try not to over-indulge. This weekend is just the beginning to a great summer, and what a kickoff it is with plenty to celebrate! Cheers!

XO - Kathie

It isn't often a film is described as a "science fiction romantic comedy", but such is the case with the current film "Moonshot", starring Cole Sprouse of "Riverdale" and Lana Condor ("Alita: Battle Angel"). The film is set in the year 2049 and we are introduced to college student Walt (Sprouse), whose dream is to go to space. Walt feels his dream is obtainable via the Kovi Industries Student Mars Program, which sends college students to Mars. Despite his desire, he has been turned down 37 times to be a part of the program due to his lack of knowledge about furthering the exploration of Mars. Hey, he just loves outer space. One night during a college party Walt accidentally meets Sophie (Condor), an extremely intelligent student whose boyfriend Calvin (Mason Gooding) is already on Mars. The meeting between Sophie and Walt proves pivotal in his quest to reach the Red Planet. During the party Walt also meets a student named Ginny (Emily Rudd), and has an instant crush. Despite the instant crush, Walt discovers Ginny is headed to Mars the very next day, leaving

him crushed. After a few weeks have passed, Sophie talks to Walt at the cafe where he works and reveals Calvin has accepted an extended stay offer on Mars, leaving her heartbroken. Despite the setback, Walt convinces Sophie to buy a ticket to Mars to be with Calvin. After convincing Sophie to head to Mars, Walt devises a plan to stowaway on the next ship after he hears about a cat that sneaked on board one of the ships. Walt, unknown to her, uses Sophie to sneak onboard her ship, and is soon himself headed to Mars to meet up with Ginny and fulfill his dream of traveling in outer space. As expected, Sophie discovers Walt has stowed away and makes him stay in her cabin in order to stay out of trouble and keep his presence lowkey during the journey. Walt's presence on the ship is discovered by the showy captain of the ship (Michelle Buteau), who thinks Walt is actually Calvin. As the journey continues, Walt learns more about Calvin and feels he is not good for Sophie, who has dreams of her own not connected to her boyfriend. After several humorous moments on the ship, the trip to Mars ends and Walt and Sophie depart after Walt is discovered and arrested. After his arrest and her moving in with Calvin's parents, some really positive things happen for Walt, and Sophie eventually realizes she may have made a mistake. I will not reveal anything else that happens to the duo, other than to say we all know they will eventually be a couple. How they get there will be up to you to discover. I really enjoyed how this film was sweet but not in the smaltchy way of a Hallmark movie. The special effects are top notch, and the representation of

Mars in the film is spectacular. I must say the film is totally owned by Sprouse, allowing the actor to break away from his uber serious Jughead Jones character on "Riverdale ''. His performance as the well-meaning but often ditzy Walt is wonderful, and he would be the kind of friend we would all enjoy having. His co-star is also effective, but portrayed in a more low key manner by the excellent

Condor. In fact Condor's character is often so low key, she is often overpowered by Sprouse. NIckpicking aside, I found "Moonshot" to be a pleasant and fun film for Sprouse and rom-com fans. Now playing on HBO Max. (Rated PG-13)

Travel to a Time When Instruments Roamed the Earth with the Symphony of the Mountains

The Pro-Art Association presents When Instruments Roamed the Earth! a children’s themed concert for families with the Symphony of the Mountains on Monday, May 9th, 2022 at 7:00 PM in the C. Bascom Slemp Auditorium at Lee High School in Pennington Gap. When Instruments Roamed the Earth! is an all-original, multi-media story-and-music event, designed to have family audiences fall in love with the sound, the people, and the experience of a symphony orchestra concert. This performance is part of the W. Campbell Edmonds

Concert Series and is free and open to the public.

In pre-historic times, strange creatures walked the planet. These were the ancient ancestors of musical instruments that inspired melodious makers in brass and wood to create the instruments we see in the orchestra today. Join the Symphony of the Mountains on a journey into a time When Instruments Roamed the Earth! Filled with laughs, surprises, multi-media projection, and on-stage action, the symphony will present the perfect all-ages introduction to the exciting sounds, people, and experience of a symphony orchestra concert. Hear the hilarious “research” of paleomusicologist, Sir Humphrey TrebleClef, who believes that our modern instruments are actually the descendants of giant, dinosaur-like creatures like you’ve never seen before. These are strange creatures which exist in the hot, mysterious, swampy jungles of Sir Humphrey’s unusual imagination. Most will not believe a man who tried to prove that ancient humans made music by

hitting themselves on the head with rocks; but everyone will smile, laugh, and be in awe of the symphonic interpretations of Sir Humphrey’s wild theories, featuring all the instruments of the orchestra. Symphony of the Mountains will perform When Instruments Roamed the Earth! on Monday, May 9th at 7:00 PM in the C. Bascom Slemp Auditorium at Lee High School in Pennington Gap, VA. This performance is part of the W. Campbell Edmonds Concert Series and is free and open to the public. Pro-Art is following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for masking. In accordance with the agency’s current recommendation, masks are optional for this event. Symphony of the Mountains has a strong and proud heritage. The orchestra began in 1946 when a small group of musicians dreamed of having a civic orchestra. Twenty-seven musicians attended the first rehearsal and the number quickly grew to more than forty. In the 80’s and 90’s the orchestra grew steadily and increased its outreach. The commitment to service now encompasses the entire region, without regard for state or county

As a depressed elder millennial, I have incorporated a common trait among my generation into my morning routine. As I sit with my first cup of coffee for the day I’ll grab my iPad and browse around houses for sale on the Zillow app. There are many houses around our fine region that, if I had the money, I would buy in a heartbeat. The fun part of the Zillow app is that not only does it let us snoop into the homes of strangers, but it also lets us be judgmental as all get out about their choices.

inspirational quote. Again, these all have similar rings to them. “May you dance brightly in the fields where your dreams ferment.” One of the truly stranger placements of a decal like this I once saw on Zillow was in a bathroom where for some insane reason the person wanted “May you always blossom in this space” above the toilet. I don’t know, maybe they worked for Kohler or something?

There are the ever-popular vinyl cut wallpaper sticker decals. 9 times out of 10 you’ll find an

on the earth do so many houses that cost upwards of $600,000 or more have such tiny kitchens? I’m talking about those large McMansions. The cookie-cutter homes that are more statement pieces for people with too much money who hate people who don’t wear the same brand of khakis as them. They all have incredibly small kitchens. My mother has always said of this phenomenon that “it’s for people who can afford to not cook.”

Maybe, instead of the island, you have the cube type “U” shape that has zero room to roll out dough, prep a casserole, dress the turkey before you roast, or even break wind without fear of rattling the cabinet doors.

I have issues with this argument. Not so much with the people who would have a house like this, but more with the person who designed it. You’re gonna tell me that you designed a massive 4,3000 square foot home and the best you could do was stick a galley kitchen in there? Was this done on a dare?
