How is your May so far? It will be over before you know it. This week we are happy to feature the State Street Tattoo Fest in Bristol. There are so many great artists in Bristol doing this amazing artwork on skin. May 20-22 is the perfect time to check them out and maybe get a new or your first tattoo! Another great event coming to the area is the Siege of Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. A great idea for your family to learn about history on May 21-22. Whatever you find yourself doing this week or weekend I hope that you are safe, healthy and happy! We appreciate all of your support and ask that you please contact if you need to advertise your business or event.

Tri-Cities Faces and Places Celebrating the people and places of our community!
When Kim Kardashian had the audacity to announce a few months ago that “no one wants to work anymore” and we all needed to “get off our a** and work” it really stuck in my craw and I took to social media to rant about the nerve of this woman and her privilege. However, in light of recent events, I’m starting to ask myself…was Kim K actually right?? One of the most unexpected challenges I’ve faced in my new career role has been hiring folks to work events. Which comes as quite the surprise considering that inflation is at an all-time high, driving the cost of every day goods like gas and groceries through the roof. I didn’t realize the world was suddenly filled with John D. Rockefellers! Maybe everyone is getting rich off Bitcoin. When I accepted this position my main concern was going to be selling the product itself; I figured I’d have no issues finding young, broke 20somethings to work events. But the drink is so well curated it sells itself, while the promotions on the other hand are failing to work themselves. In one week alone I’ve scheduled 3 different zoom interviews with people who have responded to the job postings and a big fat ZERO have called in for it. A couple days ago a girl sent her phone number via LinkedIn
and said she was available for a phone call the next day. When I text her to confirm a time, she never responded. I feel like I’m in the twilight zone. It isn’t just me either. When chatting with a local bar manager in Johnson City, he told me he recently posted an ad for Bartenders Needed. He got 74 responses and contacted each one via email, text or phone and told them to show up for an in-person interview on a certain day at a certain time. Of those 74, 6 people actually showed up to interview and a whopping 1 person made it to their first day of work. Those are incomprehensible numbers! I’m having a hard time trying to put my finger on what is happening and how so many people are currently able to live and not work. With so many having lost jobs during the pandemic and the cost of living being absolutely astronomical, one would think that standing in a liquor store for 2-3 hours and making $100 would sound pretty darned good to anyone! For me personally, I’m still trying to get caught up from losing my job in 2020 and even with my generous salary, between increased credit card debt and Nashville quickly becoming the most expensive place on Earth to live, I’m still living paycheck to paycheck and currently exploring side hustles to work in my little bit of free time. I don’t want to sound like the old curmudgeon, shaking my fist at “these kids today,” but
there does seem to be an air of entitlement, laziness and unprofessionalism amongst many of the Gen Z-ers. While brand ambassador work is a side gig, part-time at best, I am still paying you and you’re still representing my brand, which makes me your boss even if it is just for 3 hours a week. I have never ignored a text from a superior, told them I was going to do something and didn’t show up, or spoken to a manager for the first time and not presented myself clearly and professionally; and I’ve definitely never contacted them via telephone outside of appropriate business hours. While I understand people keep different schedules, I feel if you have a question for your boss in the middle of the night, you should email it or just wait until 9-5pm the next day. This just seems like common sense to me. Manners and professional conduct are a matter of respect. You give respect to people who are helping you pay your bills by keeping your word. You also give respect to yourself by having integrity and work ethic. Dressing well and speaking legibly shows you care about your appearance which is essentially is a reflection of the company you’re representing. It also shows you take pride in caring for yourself, which is the most important investment you can make. I don’t want someone

representing my name and my brand who didn’t brush their hair or tuck in their shirt and referred to me as “bro” in the first conversation. Maybe I’m old school, but it just seems there is no desire to impress anyone anymore, whether it’s work related or dating or friendships or otherwise. Hopefully this is a temporary or regional issue I’m encountering and will pass quickly. It honestly might just be a shock because it’s my first time dealing with hiring and I’ll get used to it. The old adage “it’s hard to find good help” has been around for a hundred years for a reason. But on that note, if you know of anyone, send em my way! I’ve got lots of work if someone, somewhere would only want it. In the meantime if you need me, I’ll be on my hustle, same as always.

Recently I was introduced to an amazing television series by my cousin Jan of which I had never heard about. The series is called "The Chosen" and follows the life of Jesus of Nazareth (Jonathan Roumie). There are several unique aspects of this show, the most astonishing fact of which is that season 1 of the series was the top crowd-funded series or film of all time. Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project by raising money from a larger number of people typically via the internet. The series was created, directed and co-written by American filmmaker Dallas Jenkins. The show is the first multi-season series about the life of Jesus, and portrays Jesus through the eyes of those who met him. The first two seasons consist of 18 episodes, with the third season set to begin production sometime this year for an expected fall release. Season one introduces Jesus and follows when he called his initial disciples. The disciples are Simon (Shahar Isaac) , a former fisherman, Matthew (Paras Patel), a former tax collector, Andrew (Noah James), another fisherman and brother of Simon, John (George Harrison Xanthis), another fisherman and brother Big James (Shayan Sobhian), Thaddeus (Giavani Cairo), a former

stoneman, Little James (Jordan Walker Ross), a former Temple choir member, Thomas (Joey Vahedi), a businessman, Phillip (Yoshi Barrigas), a former disciple of John the Baptizer (David Amito), Nathanael (Austin Reed Alleman) a former architect, Simon Z (Alaa Safi), a former Zealot. In season 2 we are introduced to Judas (Luke Dimyan), a former businessman. During the first season, with the exception of Judas, we get to know the disciples of Jesus as they interact with each other and their new Rabbi. The DVD and Blu-ray versions of the series also contain a special Christmas episode, which is a unique take on the birth of Christ. Season 2 focuses on the public ministry of Jesus and what begins to happen as word of his ministry and healings begins to spread. The series also features Mary Magdalene (Elizabeth Tabish), who after being redeemed by Jesus, helps with his ministry. Mary (Vanessa Benavente) portrays the mother of Jesus, and travels with Mary Magdalene and the disciples when Jesus begins his public ministry. The show also features several Roman characters, including Roman magistrate Quintus (Brandon Potter), who is the magistrate in Capernaum and is the Praetor of Galilee, and has a fascinating meeting with Jesus after he hears about the new man on the scene stirring up the public. What is so great about this show as we are able to see not only Jesus choose and interact with his disciples, but with the general public as well, and how he profoundly touched the life of everyone he met. Of course his miracles also distressed the religious leaders of the time who could not believe Jesus performed miracles on Shabbat, or Sabbath. There are so many great episodes in this show, including those of some children who met and are fascinated by the mystery man they meet, one episode where Jesus performans a miracle at a wedding,
and various episodes where the disciples attempt to get to know one another better, even though they often end of arguing. The final episode of season 2 ends as Jesus and Matthew have prepared a sermon before a gathering of thousands. The actors in this series are all wonderful in their respective roles, with two highlights being Roumie as Jesus and Patel as the often looked down upon Matthew. It's wonderful we finally get to see
Jesus in a series which provides plenty of opportunities to shine the light of his love for mankind. "The Chosen" is so well done and realistic it's almost as if we were there to witness every moment in person. Available on Blu-ray and DVD and streaming on Amazon Prime and Hulu. (Rated TV-PG)

A pair of doctor-centered blu-ray debuts is out this month from Warner Archive. First up we have James Coburn as a pathologist who turns into a private eye in 1972’s “The Carey Treatment,” then we have Spencer Tracy in MGM’s prestige production of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” from 1941. Directed by Blake Edwards “The Carey Treatment” is centered around Dr. Peter Carey, a pathologist who is a bit of a rogue character. Some of those tendencies clash with the establishment at the Boston hospital he’s newly employed at. Soon, Carey finds himself playing the part of a detective as one of his colleagues is accused of murder following an illegal abortion. Carey begins to get to the bottom of things, coming up against hypocrisy at the hospital This MGM film, based upon a 1968 book written by “Jurassic Park” author Michael Crichton under a pseudonym is rather atypical for the work of Blake Edwards, who is perhaps best known for being behind the long-running “Pink Panther” film series with Peter Sellers. There may be a reason for that as Edwards was furious at MGM for cutting and editing the film behind his

This led to Edwards suing MGM.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” has been adapted for film many times. In 1931, Paramount made a take on the story with Fredric March, which won him the Oscar for Best Actor. Ten years later they tried again with Spencer Tracy in the title role. The 1941 MGM take on the film is less of a horror movie and more of a costume drama. It’s also, not as good as the 1931 film. MGM actually bought the rights to the 1931 film, which was made by Paramount, to keep it “locked away” to avoid competition. There’s a lot going for the MGM film, Tracy’s co-stars are Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner, but overall the film just lacks a certain punch that the 1931 film has. It’s not a bad film, don’t get me wrong, it’s well made and Tracy is good, but once you see the Fredric March film it’s hard to forget about it. The movie was directed by Victor Flemming, who did MGM’s famed adaptation of “Gone with the Wind.” It ads that air of “important work
