We are so pleased to feature Wetlands this week! One of my favorite places in the area to spend a hot summer day. I hope you get the opportunity to take your family there at least a few times this summer. They have season passes available or one day tickets. However you choose to spend the hot summer days, I hope that you will be happy and safe. We have plenty of options in the area. Sycamore Shoals State Park has the Liberty Saga in the month of June which is a great way to learn more about the local history. We will do our very best to keep you updates on events and festivals coming up this summer. In the meantime, have a wonderful week!

oy This distinguished looking over grown pup is Sunny Boy. He may be 8 years old, but based on his enthusiasm for life, you would think he was only 8 months. Sunny loves people! He becomes so overjoyed interacting with humans that he just can’t seem to contain his excitement, because he wants all the love and he wants it all at once! Sunny will definitely need a very
patient and experienced owner willing to put the time, love, and effort into teaching him personal space, then the basics will easily follow. He does know to sit. Sunny Boy absolutely adores tennis balls and could play fetch for hours. Sunny Boy has been neutered, is current on his vaccinations and microchipped.

Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying the blue skies and sunshine and keeping your knees in the breeze. Biker Wear is now open at our new location at 116 Buffalo Street downtown Johnson City. Stop by and check out the new place. We still have a few things to get done and even though we are open, we haven’t set a big grand opening date. Now your ride for this week. The Mountain Ribbons Ride (about 140 miles round trip) The highways of East Tennessee flow like ribbons through our crowning glory, the Appalachian Mountains. Prepare to have your breath taken away as you cut across the lakes, rivers, and streams of one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges. Just when you think you’ve reached the pinnacle of winding roads and natural beauty, arrive at one of the greatest rides in the whole world—the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rev your engines and prepare for the next chapter of this glorious ride where you can visit the Moses Cone House, the Linn Cove Viaduct, or the various overlooks of Grandfather Mountain. Everyone should experience a drive on The Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway runs from Virginia all the way to

Cherokee, North Carolina. Beautiful scenery all the way. Overlooks and amazing vistas the whole way. No big trucks are allowed on the Parkway and the speed limit is 45. Grandfather Mountain has been an icon in North Carolina’s landscape for generations, offering stunning scenery and unmatched ecological diversity. This state park opens the mountains to spectacular hiking and backpacking and there is the mile-high swinging bridge. In Linville you can visit the famous Linville Falls, the most popular waterfall in the Blue Ridge Mountains because of its accessibility to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a spectacular three-tiered waterfall plunging into Linville Gorge, the “Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians.” The ride continues through the Roan Mountain State Park, another scenic ride with amazing roads and views, back to Johnson City. Roan Mountain is famous for its spectacular natural gardens of Catawba rhododendron. The peak bloom time for the sea of purplemagenta is usually mid-June, plus or minus a week depending on weather. Enjoy the blooms in two areas: a scenic hike along the Appalachian Trail from Carver's Gap or nearby the Recreation Area with an easy paved trail and picnic area. It’s Memorial Day Weekend, the official kickoff for summer in the south. Every sparkling, blue pool will be filled to the brim with ice cold water, the grocery stores will be overrun with watermelons and the smell of sizzling burgers and dogs will fill the air. Between the lure of carefree summer fun activities and the never-ending stressors of adulthood, I’m feeling quite nostalgic about summer days past. Hardly anything holds a candle to being a kid on summer break, but nothing could top being a kid on summer break in the late 90s. The teens and pre-teens today can’t fathom the idea of saying goodbye to some of their friends and literally not seeing them at all, not even a photo, until the first day of school 3 months later, but that’s how we rolled. The magic that occurred during those long, hazy, humid days between May and August was special and unique to every single person. We made new friends from far away on family vacations. We got our first kisses, first pimples, first cars; and the most exciting part was retelling it in vivid detail to our long-lost school chums on the first day back…of course while wearing a brand new fancy outfit. Some of my fondest childhood moments were spent at the Elizabethton City Pool. As soon as those gates opened on the morning of Memorial Day Weekend, we all rushed in, threw down our blankets and fearlessly plunged into the freezing water. It took at least a month for that 12 foot pool to get above 60 degrees, but we didn’t care at all. We would race laps, do
flips and handstands and jack-knife off the diving board with blue skin and chattering teeth ‘til our parents picked us up after work, only getting out to make prank phone calls from the payphone or eat cold cut sandwiches with potato chips. On really lucky days, the cool older kids would walk to Taco Bell and bring back sacks of greasy tacos, or someone’s parents gave them enough money to order pizza delivery instead of packed lunch. Not one of us had to watch what we ate; every calorie was burned because we never sat still.
my friends and the boys we were crushing on. On the best nights, there would be sleepovers. My poor parents are probably still trying to recover the lost nights of sleep due to screeching girls playing dress up and trying to be the 9th caller for the Electric 99.3 Top 9 at 9.
The absolute best week of the year in Elizabethton was the first week of June, when the carnival rolled into town and aligned perfectly with the Covered Bridge Celebration. Being a small town, this was the one week of the year when there was actually stuff to do! Just strolling around, taking The summer after 6th grade, my in flashing neon lights and the smell 16-year-old cousin got her license of frying funnel cakes, and bravely and first car. Every evening we would jumping on hastily assembled rides roll back the sunroof of her Mazda without a second thought was the 626 and cruise all over Elizabethton, biggest thrill of my year. Those days eating Pal’s Frenchie Fries with were an opportunity to mix and chocolate shakes and congregating mingle with kids from outside your in the Ingles parking lot with other school and age group and the hopes high schoolers. We always had to be for a summer romance were always back to my grandmother’s house by at an all-time high. dark, which was pretty late during These days I’m a grown up in a postpeak summer months. My mom y2k world and there are no summer would pick me up and drive the short breaks. There is no reprieve from 8 minute route back home, but those responsibility, no escape from the minutes live forever in my memory. harsh realities of the modern age. I would roll the windows down and I know exactly what every single stick my head out. The air was sticky person is doing at any given time sweet; wet with humidity and thick thanks to social media. I’m burdened with the scent of honeysuckle. The with the weight of inflation and chorus of hundreds of croaking aging parents and political chaos, bullfrogs who spilled out of the and hardened by the experience of ponds along those country roads was tragedy and heartbreak. There’s almost deafening as we twisted and nothing I wouldn’t give to wake up turned our way through the darkness, in my childhood bedroom, walls our only guiding light coming from plastered with posters from Tiger the blinking cacophony of lightning Beat, have my Daddy make me a bug butts. ham and cheese croissant, and meet When I got home I would drag the extra long phone cord all the way from the living room to my bedroom and lock myself in my room on 3-way phone calls into all hours of the night, gossiping and laughing with
up with all those beautiful carefree kids for one more dip in that freezing cold pool. Too many of those kids are gone now, taken far too soon by the disease of addiction. I’d ride the ferris wheel at the carnival
without worrying about who threw it together, and when my car stopped at the tippy top, I’d look down at all the tiny lights below as far as the eye could see and think this was as good as life could ever get, in that small town on a summer night. And when my Momma drove me home, I’d make sure to tell her just how much those drives and those bullfrogs meant to me. There is no greater gift than the innocence of adolescence, and I wish we wouldn’t steal that from our younger generations. The simple joys of a childhood summer, especially in the south, can never be replaced by an iPhone. I hope this Memorial Day Weekend we’re all able to capture a small glimmer of those wet, hot days gone by, if even for just a moment. They truly were the best of times.

Marilyn Monroe is one of the most famous, if not the most famous movie star of all time. She is also one of the most tragic, having passed at the young age of 36. Monroe is the subject of the Netflix documentary " The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes". The film covers the life and death of Monroe as told through unseen interviews with friends of the star and archival footage. "Goddess" author Anthony Summers began his research of Monroe after he learned the Los Angeles County District Attorney was reopening the case of her death. Summers spent three years collecting 650 tape recordings of interviews with people who knew Monroe in her lifetime or had knowledge of her death. All the interviews in the film are original, but actors perform lip-synched reenactments. The film begins with Monroe's rise to stardom, and how many powerful men in Hollywood help her eventual rise to mega stardom. One fascinating interview is with Jane Russell who co-starred with Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", and describes Monroe's strong work ethic. However, as most fans of the late star know, Monroe also suffered from poor mental health due to a traumatic childhood. Over the course of her life, Monroe married several famous men, including baseball great Joe Dimaggio and author

Arthur Miller, but those marriages ended in divorce, leaving Monroe single at the time of her passing. When she divorced Miller, Monroe became increasingly dependent on prescription drugs and became difficult to work with due to the effects of the drugs. Monroe is also known for becoming involved with the Kennedy family, and had met Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. in the 1950's when he was an executive at RKO Pictures. Monroe also had affairs with both President John F. Kennedy and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, as she often met them at the Malibu home of actor Peter Lawford. During his research, Summers pieces together how, due to her affairs with the Kennedy men, she was in a risky political position, as both Kennedy's would talk with her about current events, including nuclear weapons testing. As a result of Monroe's political views, the FBI became concerned she would pass along or make public anything she was told by the Kennedy's, and as a result the brothers attempted to end all contact with her. Monroe eventually turned on the Kennedy brothers as she felt she was just being used. Monroe tragically died on August 5, 1962 at her home, and her death was ruled as probable suicide. It was reported at the time Monroe's housekeeper found the star's bedroom door locked at 3am, and later Monroe's psychiatrist arrived around 3:30 and broke into her bedroom through a window and found her dead. As a result of his interviews with subjects, Summers discounts the timeline, and discovers Monroe was actually taken to the hospital via ambulance as early as 11:00 the night of her death. According to the interviews, Monroe either died on the way to the hospital or while at the hospital, and was returned home in order to be "discovered". Even with all his research uncovering unknown facts about her death, Summers doesn't believe she was murdered, but died as a result of accidental overdose or suicide. However, he does suspect any cover-up was
due to her involvement with the Kennedy brothers. The L.A. district attorney ended its review of the case in 1982 and upheld the recorded cause of death. The documentary is fascinating, and reveals how Hollywood and stardom can leave you loved by the public, but often lonely in your personal life. It's such a shame Monroe never found lasting love, and when you see stories like this about her life, you wish you could have been there to hug her or
at least try to help save her. "The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes" features wonderful clips and interviews with the star and is a gripping documentary of a Hollywood icon whose life ended far too soon. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated TV-MA)

Writer-Director Billy Wilder’s 1944 film “Double Indemnity” is considered by many to be the definitive example of that style known as Film Noir. Cynicism, femme Fatales, dark, shadowy images. These are all the things that make up the style of film which was made in America during the 1940s and 1950s. The term wasn’t used by Hollywood and didn’t gain a great deal of traction until the 1970s. French film critics coined it noticing a certain similarity in many crime films. Based on James M. Cain’s novel of the same name, “Double Indemnity” is the story of insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray), whose been in the game a long time and is slicker than an iced-over road. Neff pays a call to the Dietrichson household to check in about a car claim that’s past due. Neff meets Mrs. Dietrichson, Phyllis (Barbara Stanwyck). Phylis is a bored and dissatisfied housewife, almost immediately sparks fly between the two. Phyllis works on Neff to come up with a scheme to convince her husband to sign up for a life insurance policy. Neff, using his knowledge of the company, works out a way to murder Mr. Dietchrsion in a way that won’t be questioned by anyone at the company.

Neff’s biggest fear is his boss, claims manager Barton Keys, played fantastically by Edward G. Robinson. Keys has a sort of “second sight” about these things and it’s almost impossible to pull the wool over his eyes in any combination.

I’ve never seen “Double Indemnity” look so dark. The shadows are deep and rich, it’s hard to imagine the film looking better than it does here. This is noir turned to 11.
