NOTE
FROM THE
PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! My goodness May flew in and out so quickly! Where did the month go?? School is out for most of the kids and moms are looking for fun things to do this summer. Wetlands is open now and there are lots of day camps happening in the local cities. It is also time for The Blue Plum Festival! Make sure to look inside at their schedule. There is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Sycamore Shoals also has the outdoor drama Liberty starting June 3rd. A great way to learn some history while being entertained. Let us know what festivals or events coming up and we will be glad to help you get the word out in the community. Whatever you are doing this summer I hope that you are happy and safe! Thank you for your continued support!

Hello my fellow brothers and sisters. I hope this finds you and your family in good health. I like to promote local event, so this week I thought it would be nice to talk about the POW WOW which is hosted by the True Sons Motorcycle Club. The POW WOW has been going on for 33 years in Rogersville, TN. The True Sons started this event as a way to get together with sister motorcycle clubs for brotherhood and fellowship. The first few POW WOW’s were held in a cow pasture and moved around the Rogersville area until the club bought the place they have now at 183 Lawson Drive. Their first club house was on a road called Elbow City and yes that is the actual name of the road. It was near the old Pressman’s home in Rogersville. As with any

motorcycle club they take a lot of pride in their clubhouse property and their annual field meet. They show respect to those around them, they help the community around them. At their annual POW WOW, they take great pride in the fact that nobody is served a hot beverage and the food is always amazing. Useless Facts: 1. Apple seeds contain cyanide. 2. The cheesiest pizza ever was topped with 154 varieties of cheese. 3. There are giant technicolor squirrels in India. 4. A shark is the only animal that can blink both its eyes. 5. You would likely “mutate” in space without a spacesuit. 6. In most advertisements, including newspapers, the time displayed on a watch is 10:10. 7. There are around 16 million people alive today that are direct descendants of Genghis Khan. 8. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. 9. There’s a city called “Rome” on every continent except Antarctica. 10. The opposite sides of a die will always add up to seven. 11. Marie Curie’s 100-year-old belongings are still radioactive. 12. A quick internet search of the word "inspiration" leads to numerous quotes looking to help boost the hopes of the people who are searching for ways to pull themselves up and brighten their day. The best inspiration can be found through your own experiences. Your successes can inspire you to continue that path and create more successful experiences. Negative experiences can create lessons that teach you how to cope in ways you had not previously considered.
Social Sentiments By Wendy Hayden socialsentiments @outlook.com

Inspiration can be found in the lives of the people you care for. Their experiences create life lessons that can promote a positive outlook. By talking your loved ones through their experiences, you learn more about yourself and how you would handle certain situations. Positivity creates a better world. Actively searching for inspiration can completely change your outlook and promote a better mentality.

The Carter County Omnium is Back on June 4th and 5th The Carter County Omnium returns for the fifteenth year on June 4 and 5. The three races cover Carter and Unicoi Counties winding through our beautiful and challenging terrain. The Carter County Roan Groan, with it’s mountain top finish , the Ballad Health Time Trial with it’s climb, and the Carter County Bank Criterium in downtown Elizabethton, provides a unique weekend of bicycle racing. The events will bring a total of about 700 people to our area. Stephen Bassett, riding for Rally Racing, winner of the pro men’s Omnium in 2020 and 2021, will not be able to defend his title this year, due to his European racing schedule. Bassett said, the “Roan Groan is without a doubt Tennessee’s most iconic course. It’s always a pleasure to race up Roan Mountain. Great races are hard to come by these days and the Carter County Omnium has held its place as one of the best races in the country.” Mitchell Hopkins is returning to
defend his Masters 40+ win of last year. He said “Carter County Omnium has stood the test of time with great organization and the ability to change venues when necessary. Still one of the best race weekends for amateurs there is. It’s always fun to have a proper mountain top finish”. In the 2021 Omnium there were 338 racers from 25 states. The majority of them were here for the first time. Early registration is trending to be about the same this year, though we have some international registrants again who were absent during Covid-19. Devraj Grewal riding for Oliver’s Racing is from Sidney, Australia. He raced the National championships Australia in January and the Oceania Continental Championships in April. Before Covid-19 we had a few pro racers from Colombia, Italy, Great Britain, and New Zealand over the years. The Carter County Roan Groan for the Pro 1 /2 category is unique in the USA. They race from Elizabethton
Cat Island Park to Carver’s Gap uses 80 miles of roads in Carter and Unicoi Counties. They climb a total of 9,747 ft, finishing with a 7.5 mile category 1 climb of 2,584 ft. In 2021, Bassett averaged 23 mph and still had to sprint on the top of the mountainin for the win against five other racers. This course is similar to stage 17 of this year’s Tour de France in the Pyrenees. Stage 17 is 81 miles long climbing a total of 10,000+ ft and finishes with a 5 mile 2,000 ft climb. Our winners in the past go on , like Bassett, to race for pro teams in Europe. This level of racing is made possible by our sponsors providing the $12,000+ cash prizes. They are, Tour Carter County, Ballad Health, Carter County Bank, Edward Jones, Nor-Well, Carter County Parks and Recreation, Holiday Inn, and Food City. You can watch the developing racers on Sunday June 5. For schedule and info: cartercountyomnium.com/spectator/

I spend enough time traveling the great state of Tennessee to know that it’s one of the most beautiful places in the country in general, but our cozy little corner in particular is really something special. Nestled among the peaks and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains and criss-crossed by the narrow paths of the Appalachian Trail, there’s no shortage of natural beauty or outdoor adventure in and around the Tri. Getting in a hike is one of my favorite ways to exercise; surrounded by the peace and tranquility of nature, taking in fresh air and wildlife, it hardly feels like a workout at all! That is, until I find myself on the wrong end of a steep incline and realize I can no longer breathe. But like life, eventually you crawl your way over the hard part and get to enjoy the view from above, or at least have time to catch your breath.
we’re the top of the food chain, but Mother Nature is always quick to remind us with freak disasters that she’s going to reign supreme. For a quick and easy hike that’s not too far off the beaten path, check out The Blue Hole. Located on Holston Mountain in Carter County, this once hidden gem now has adequate parking and stairs in place for easy navigation down to the falls. Technically 4 small waterfalls, the main attraction is the deep, blue pool at the bottom of the main falls. You’ll be hard pressed to find colder water anywhere else, with the small, azure swimming hole hovering around Arctic temperatures even in the dog days of August. There are small unmarked trails leading away from the falls themselves, but I wouldn’t recommend exploring too far, as it seems they land on private property fairly quickly. The Blue Hole was a legendary smooching and What better way to literally chill swimming spot for my parents out after a long hike on a hot when they were dating, and then day than by making your end when I got in high school I carried destination a gorgeous waterfall? on that tradition. Going now, Bearing safety in mind (I cannot there’s a little less swimming emphasize this enough), there’s and a lot less smooching, but more than plenty waterfall hikes I have discovered a newfound of varying difficulties within an appreciation for the beauty and hour or so of the region. So why legacy that lives on in that place. not lace up your boots, pack Another spot with minimal effort some snacks and make a day but maximum reward is Elk River of it? Hiking to a waterfall is a Falls just over the state line in Elk perfect activity in a group, as a Park, NC. A quick trip from the duo or alone, but again, I must insist if you plan on getting in the parking lot pops you out at the tipwater, bring a life jacket and water top of the 50ft waterfall; a unique shoes and take ALL the necessary birds-eye view that you don’t get a lot on your average waterfall precautions. We humans think hike. The large pool at the bottom is surrounded by large rocks for sunbathing, snacking and hunting for crawdads. And while many people make the insanely stupid
decision to jump from the top of the falls, I hope none of you are as willing to roll the dice; every summer there are always tragedies at this beautiful space, from severe injuries to death because some daredevil wanted to get a cheap thrill. It’s just not worth it! A heavily trafficked but moderate climb is Linville Falls, again located barely across the NC state line in Burke County. While there are several landings along the climb to the top which offer a variety of views of the towering falls, it’s difficult to get up close and personal the way you can at the others I’ve discussed. It’s definitely more of a tourist attraction, especially in the fall for all the leaf lookers, heavily congested with foot traffic which also makes it a little hard to connect with the nature aspect for me. However, the reason I listed this site is because of its close proximity to Linville Falls Winery. The winery is located adjacent to a Christmas tree farm, and features a tasting room inside a stunning villa. There is typically live music and lots of room to roam and relax. The best way, in my opinion, to enjoy a hike to this waterfall is by getting your exercise in early, then finishing the day relaxing with a glass of wine and a group of friends. The last group of cascades I’ll have room for is Red Fork Falls on Unaka Mountain in Unicoi. This is another set of smaller falls and one large main one, which is located about a half mile in. The trail itself crosses several creeks and is the most difficult I’ve mentioned, but the dizzying 60ft waterfall is worth the trek.
Surrounded by lush greenery, you’ll feel like you’ve escaped Tennessee to the rainforests of Costa Rica. With this hike being fairly remote, I would suggest a good pair of all terrain water shoes and taking a buddy in case of an emergency. But all in all it’s manageable and worth the trip. Cooling off in the creeks along the way is honestly a refreshing aspect to this more difficult journey. There are dozens more falls around East Tennessee and Western North Carolina that I wish I had the time and space to cover. A quick google search will provide you with those options as well as detailed directions guiding you every step of the way. So get off the couch and get your butt outdoors! You won’t regret breaking a sweat and getting some Insta-worthy pics of the natural beauty of our hometowns!

Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard ("True Blood") sure gives his all in the current film "The Northman", in which he co-produced and stars as Amleth, a Viking warrior prince. The film relies heavily on Norse Mythology, and is set in 895 AD. We first see Amleth as a child welcoming his father, King Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke) home to the island of Hrafnsey after a successful overseas conquest. The King is also welcomed by Queen Gudrun (Nicole Kidman), who appears to be happier to see her husband than he is to see her (foreshadowing). After his arrival home with a celebration, King Aurvandill takes Amleth to a spiritual ceremony to prepare his son to one day become heir to the throne. The ceremony is bizarre to say the least, and for my tastes went on a bit too long. The following morning after the ceremony, the King is ambushed and murdered by a group of masked warriros, of which one I willl not identify. After he witnessess the murder of his father, Amleth is able to escape and return home, only to find his village under seage. The lad sees his mother kidnapped, and after realizing he must flee, takes a boat and while swearing to avenge his father and save his mother, heads out to sea. Later Amleth is found by a group of Vikings, and is raised

by them as a berserker, a warrior who is able to fight in a trancelike fury, which later gave rise to the English word berserk. Now an adult, Amleth encounters a Seeress following an attack in the land of Rus, who predicts the warrior will soon seek revenge on the person who murdered his father. Eventually discovers the person responsible for killing his father was overthrown by Harald of Norway, and is living in exile in Iceland. Amleth is able to find a ship headed to Iceland, and sneaks aboard posing as a slave. While on the ship Amleth meets Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy), a Slavic slave who says she is a sorceress. When the ship arrives in Iceland, Amleth discovers he now has a half-brother named Gunnar (Elliott Rose). Amleth is a slave in the small village, and after escaping one night ecounters a strange man who tells about a magical sword that can only be retrieved at night. After hearing the story, Amleth enters a mound (a raised area of earth covering a grave or graves) and is able to retrieve the sword after fighting and defeating an undead Mound Dweller. The obtained sword will play a huge role in the revenge of Amleth (which could have been the title of the movie). During their time as slaves, Amleth and Olga grow closer, and eventually due to a selfless act by Amleth, is rewarded Olga as his wife. The new couple then make plans to overcome their masters in order to seek freedom from bondage for themselves and the other slaves. The plan of the duo works, and after several surprising interactions, one especially shocking encounter with his mother, Amleth and Olga are able to flee Iceland, but while fleeing on a ship, Amleth reveals to Olga he must return to Iceland and avenge his father. When he returns to Iceland, he battles the person responsible for killing his father at the Gates of Hel, otherwise known as the volcano Hekla. The fight is exciting and has a surprising end. All the actors in this film are in top form, and one actor I
have not mentioned up to this point is Claes Bang who stars as the King's brother Fjolnir, and is very effective in the role. Meanwhile, Kidman is her usual excellent self, but the definite highlight is Skarsgard, who is completely animalistic in his role, which is perfect for his character. The actors aside, I did feel the film was a bit too long, and would have fared better with a bit of editing. The film also contains graphic violence, which I supposed you should
expect in a film about Vikings. On the positive side, the film features beautiful cinematography, which aids the storytelling. While I certainly didn't enjoy every aspect of "The Northman", Skarsgard is the film's saving grace. Now playing in theaters. (Rated R)

Somedays when you get out of bed you have an idea of what your day will have in store for you. On other days you get up and you have no idea what the day will throw at you. Example: you never wake up planning to get into a fight with a doorknob. I went downstairs into the room that’s in the partially finished basement and was going to head out into the said basement. Reaching the end of the stairs I turned and faced the door that was to my immediate right. I put my hand on the knob and turned, but nothing happened.

This meant that I spent most of my free time constantly rubbing my hands with lotion, often leaving a fine sheen of lotion that makes my hands as slick and smooth as a Teflon-coated pan. As a result, I have noticed some difficulty in holding things as well as I once could. Remote controls fly out of my hand as if someone holding a shotgun just yelled “pull!” Perhaps my moisture-dense hands are not getting any traction on the doorknob, I may feel like I’m turning it, but I’m not.
However, the door didn’t open. Frustration was now rising inside me. I began to turn the knob left and right frantically, pulling and pushing on it and putting my free hand towards the top of the door to see if I could add more force to get it to open. Nothing, the door didn’t budge, despite hearing that pop again.

This is when I began to get a tiny bit paranoid that I was trapped within my own home. Would I ever see the sun again? Who was in charge of this turn of events? Was my home out to get me like in all those bad 1980s sci-fi movies? That’s when I remembered I do not have any smart home technologies in my house. I was safe from
