There is no rhyme or reason as to why many new residents leave as quickly as they come in, yet an unlucky few become familiar faces. Ryder is one such familiar face. He is a loyal companion to all that love him, but his loyalty and trust takes time to build. After living at the rescue for 3 years, he really can’t be faulted for his cautious behavior. When really letting loose our boy howls with any passing sirens and even at the moon on rare occasions. Ryder is on a poultry free diet, and is currently receiving veterinary care for possible food and environmental allergies. He would prefer a home with adults or older children, and a fenced in yard. Ryder just turned 5 yrs old, Lab mix, neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped.

BIKER EVENTS sponsored by biker wear ETSU Hosting Event Celebrating Juneteenth

East Tennessee State University will commemorate Juneteenth, a federal holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, in an oncampus event later this month.

The celebration is planned for Friday, June 17, at 11:30 a.m. at the Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center, located on the second floor of the renovated D.P. Culp Student Center. “This is an incredibly important holiday that we are pleased to say has grown in popularity in recent decades,” said Steven C. Ellis, interim director of the ETSU Multicultural Center. “We invite the public to come to campus on June 17 for an engaging and lively event.” Dr. Christel Young, co-president of the

Black Faculty and Staff Association and director of Using Information Technology, will review the history and purpose of Juneteenth. Nationally known dancer Kasper Glasper and Universally Complicated Freestyler’s Brett Blue will also give a dance performance. Current student Style Davis will perform an original spoken word. Juneteenth formally became a national holiday in 2021. It commemorates the end of slavery in America, marking the day that enslaved people in Texas found out they were free in 1865.

Hello once again, hope everyone enjoyed Bike week at the beach. This week I thought I would give you a run down about The 8th Annual Snake Pit Bike Rally. I am writing about the Snake Pit Rally cause; well, it is our rally. Here is a little history about this rally. Eight years ago, my brother Jeff told me about a little boy who needed some help. I didn’t know the child, but I soon met him. So, we went to do poker run entitled Brody’s Run. We rallied as many bikers as we could. While we were sitting things in motion we were ask if we could start the ride with breakfast and end it in Shady Valley in our backyard. So, we let folks camp, had a few fireworks, bike games and a friend to bring his guitar and play a few tunes. Pork and I didn’t have a stage for him play on. My brother went out and got door prizes, set up the ride. The following year things got bigger before long it was a rally. Spiderman jumping out

of an airplane, bigger fireworks, bigger bands, you get the picture. My brother, Pork and I helped this family every year until Brody didn’t need us anymore. So now Pork and I have built a very nice stage with a roof, a tiki bar, bought everything we need to do bike games etc.… Now this is known as The Snake Pit Bike Rally. It’s a 3-day event starting on Friday and ending on Sunday with a church service. Although Brody doesn’t need us we still give our proceeds back to a local charity. If you would like to attend here is the information you will need. It is June 10th to June 12th. You must be 21 to attend, $15 per person on Friday night, $20 per person on Saturday night or the weekend rate $30 per person. You can bring a RV, Bus or tent but must be selfcontained as this is our backyard with a few acres so there is room. Everyone welcome, you don't have to have a bike. Sponsors: Biker Wear - 19E Pit Stop – Loafer - Fireworks World Baker Contraction There are 3 rides on Saturday June 11th First Ride Meet Buddy Shaffer at Tulips 12 noon KSU 12:30 Roll to 19E Pit Stop Then to the Snake Pit Bike Rally. Having spent a great deal of my life in the service industry, a lot of the clientele I serviced were traveling for business. Spending my evenings grinding away behind a bar, ankle deep in spilled drinks and growing increasingly numb to the theatrics of under-socialized and over-served patrons, I would daydream about how glamorous the lives and jobs of these on-the-go folks must be; working in a different city every day, meeting new and exciting people along the way from all over the world and bedding down every evening to the turn-down service and freshly fluffed pillows of fancy hotels. It seemed like the perfect opposite to the monotony of my own hum-drum existence, slinging the same drinks to the same faces in the same town I’d woken up in every day of my life. But the old adage of “careful what you wish for” is ringing quite true in my ears these days, as I’ve finally achieved my goal of a career in motion and it’s not exactly the globe-trotting, fast paced existence of glitz and glamour that I’d imagined. In fact, the more I’m on the road, the more I seem to be falling off track.

A new one day “micro music festival” is bringing national touring artists, family friendly activities, and more to Northeast Tennessee The first annual High On A Hillside will take place June 25th, 2022 at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City, TN. According to Courtney Andrews, one of the festival’s directors, “High On A Hillside is a celebration of the musical heritage of this region. Where it all started and where it is going. We plan to bring the best up and coming artists in the progressive bluegrass, folk, rock and country sphere, right here to Johnson City. As the event grows, attendees will enjoy even larger acts. This city was integral in the creation of bluegrass and country music. We deserve a marquee music event celebrating that contribution, and High On A Hillside aims to be that event”. The event is family friendly and will feature local craft vendors, amazing food trucks, craft beer and seltzer from Tennessee Hills Brewstillery, events and activities for everyone. In 1986 the film "Top Gun" burst onto theater screens, and despite mixed reactions from critics became a smash hit with audiences and in 2015 the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry. So it's hard to believe it took 36 years to get a sequel, but we now have one with "Top Gun: Maverick". Tom Cruise returns as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a role he made iconic in the original film. Maverick is still serving in the U.S. Navy as a test pilot and has avoided promotion so he can continue flying. Maverick is confronted with bad news in the film as he learns Rear Admiral Chester "Hammer" Cain (Ed Harris) plans to shut down the hypersonic "Darkstar" scramjet program in order to direct funds to various drone programs. Being the rebel he has always been, Maverick takes flight without permission in one of the scramjets in order to prove he can reach Mach 10 speed. He manages to reach Mach 10, but decides to push the jet further with disastrous results. While Cain wants to ground Maverick for good, his long time friend and former rival Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer), manages to get him assigned

to train an elite group of F/A 18E/ Super Hornet pilots. The pilots need to be trained to bomb a uranium enrichment facility of an unnamed rouge country, and the assignment comes with great risk and extreme danger. Most of the pilots are well grounded, save for the cocky and extremely confident Lieutenant Jake "Hangman" Seresin (Glen Powell), who is always at odds with fellow pilot Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), who is the son of Maverick's late RIO and best friend Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. Rooster's relationship with Maverick has been precarious as he was blocked for several years from entering the Naval Academy by Maverick who made a promise to Rooster's mom to delay his entry. At first the pilots doubt Maverick is any better than they are, but after seeing him in action they quickly realize they are under the leadership of the very best. The training for the mission continues with both failures and successes, and during the process Maverick discovers he is a good instructor despite his initial doubts. After the intense training continues, Maverick and his pupils are ready to begin the mission despite developing doubts by Rooster who is a bit shaken due to Hangman's constant badgering of him. The mission is very thrilling and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The film has many flashbacks and salutes to the first film, and there is a great and touching scene between Iceman and Maverick that will go down in cinema history. Also showing up in the film is the character of Penny (Jennifer Connelly), who was only mentioned in the first film, and Connelly has wonderful onscreen chemistry with Cruise. One of the many great parts of the first film was the soundtrack, which received 9xPlatinum status, thus leaving this film a hard act

to follow. The soundtrack of the new film doesn't disappoint, with Lady Gaga on board among others. When it comes to his movies, Cruise doesn't play, and as we have learned over the years does most if not all of his own stunts, and is a pilot. One very interesting aspect of the film is the fact the actors had to learn how to run cameras because they had to direct themselves when they were up in the jets. Cruise is again wonderful in the role of Maverick, and his younger costars are all effective, and are not

overshadowed by Cruise. As I have said in the past, if you looked up the meaning of "movie star", I'm sure Cruise would be front and center as he has mastered the art. "Top Gun:Maverick" had me laughing, crying, feeling tense, and ready to cheer at the end of the film. Not only is this a great action film, it has heart at its core, and is one of the best movies of the summer, and be sure to see it on the big screen. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13)

This month marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of screen icon Judy Garland, who will forever be known for playing Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” To celebrate, Warner Archive has released two new to bluray movies from Garland’s time with the studio that made her famous, MGM. From 1942 we have Garland paired alongside a making his screen debut Gene Kelly in “For Me And My Gal,” then from 1945 we have Garland in a rare non-musical in the romantic wartime comedy/drama “The Clock.” “For Me And My Gal” marked a few firsts for the two lead stars. It was another MGM musical coming from the studio’s legendary Freed unit headed by producer Arthur Freed, who produced nearly every single one of the studio’s famous musicals. It’s one of the lesser-known black and white musicals the studio made. For Judy Garland, it was the first time she was given a role with a chance to show off her dramatic skills. For Gene Kelly, it was his first time on the big screen in a role that Garland lobbied for the unproven Kelly to have after seeing him in a Broadway show.

And My Gal” is the story of traveling performers who at first clash with each other backstage at a theater, then through a series of conversations, start to fall in love. Garland is great in the film, and her romance with Kelly is great. Kelly starts as a cocky and arrogant star, then mellows as he begins to fall for Judy. What’s surprising about the film is how surefooted and strong Kelly is in his debut film.

The soldier inadvertently breaks the heel of her shoe and rushes her off to find a shoe repair shop. This sets off a series of the gal giving the naive young man a tour around New York City, and soon they begin to develop feelings for one another. “The Clock” is a classic film that is a little bit overlooked, which is a shame as it’s a gem of a movie. It’s sweet, romantic, and funny, but also realistic about the realities of a wartime romance, being released in Garland took Kelly under her wing and 1945. It’s a real charmer worth seeing. helped him adjust to being in front Again, using a new 2K master this of the camera, even going to his side blu-ray of “The Clock” is as clear in fights the young actor would have and as sharp as it’s ever looked. The with director Berkeley, whom Garland hated. Towards the end of the film the war tone overtakes things, though showing World War One, the movie was released fresh into the U.S.’s involvement with World War Two. The film even has a “buy war bonds” tag right at the end. Overall it’s a very good, entertaining, and overlooking MGM musical that’s well worth owning.

Warner Archive brings “For Me and My Gal” to blu-ray for the first time using a brand new 2K master that looks fantastic. If you’ve bought Directed by Busby Berkeley and set Warner Archive’s other blu-rays of during the era of Vaudeville in the days 1940s black and white MGM films you leading up to World War One, “For Me know what to expect here. It’s a solid, sharp presentation that looks great in HD. Bonus materials are ported over from the DVD release of the film. They include a commentary by Garland biographer John Fricke, two vintage musical shorts, two deleted scenes from the film, outtakes, and a 1943 radio adaptation with a “Leo on the Air” radio promo for the film. All this is capped by the trailer and it makes for a great presentation.

Jumping ahead three years we have Garland in her first non-musical role, “The Clock,” co-starring Robert Walker and directed by Garland’s soon-to-be husband Vincente Minnelli. Walker plays a small-town soldier with a two-day leave in New York City. Overwhelmed by the city, the young soldier bumbles his way through Penn Station bumping into a young working girl played by Garland.

nighttime scenes where the young couple helps a milkman on his route show off a fine dark contrast. Again a few bonus features from the DVD are ported over. We have the trailer, a Pete Smith short, and a vintage cartoon. Topping it this time is a radio adaptation of the film. Warner Archive has done a fine job celebrating Garland’s centennial with a pair of lesser-known films from her filmography. These are top-notch transfers and anyone who is a fan of Garland’s work would be doing themselves a disservice not picking these two discs up. See you next week.
