Happy Summer! Boy the weather sure has been hot. I hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated. People don’t realize how easy it is to lose hydration without enough water. Remember caffeine and carbonated drinks will not be what you need. We are so happy to welcome Wrecking Crew Harley Davidson in Johnson City to the Loafer family! S un ny Have you met this lion? His name is Sunny. He is 8 1/2 yrs old. Sunny has been with us for a while, because he came interrible shape and with different infections and has been in treatment. He is incredibly sweet and was so gentle with everyone when receiving his meds and treatment! Now Sunny is strong and healthy (his long hair still has to grow a bit) and ready to
find home. He enjoys human touch and is easy to handle. Sunny is good with other cats, likes children and is litter trained. He doesn’t digest wet food well and food with dyes in it, so if you want to live with this lion, youneed to be able to feed him no dye food only, but that’s a really tiny price for living with this amazing cat!

Visit Johnson City to Host the 2022 Meet the Mountains Festival After three successful festivals under Northeast Tennessee Economic Partnership, Visit Johnson City is excited to be the new hosting body for Meet the Mountains Festival. The 4th Annual Meet the Mountains Festival will be held on August 19 and 20, 2022 in Downtown Johnson City at Founders Park. In past years, the festival has served as an annual coming together of Northeast Tennessee’s outdoor recreation community and has acted as a one-stop shop to experience all of the region’s outdoor opportunities. Now under Visit Johnson City, it intends to maintain this tradition but capitalize on the festival’s potential to attract visitors to the region. By increasing awareness of the area’s natural assets and encouraging attendees to live healthy lifestyles, Visit Johnson City knows this festival will increase growth opportunities for the outdoor recreation economy. The ideal results are enhancing the livability and health of the community and attracting visitors to enjoy Northeast Tennessee’s worldclass outdoor recreation. “Visit Johnson City staff have been an integral part of planning since the festival’s inception. When conversations began to transfer ownership, we knew this was an opportunity to create a tourismdriver event needed in Johnson City.
In addition, this would allow us to continue promoting our region and outdoor assets on a larger scale,” said Ashley Cavender, Festival Director of Meet the Mountains. Meet the Mountains Festival creates free, family-friendly, outdoor experiences throughout the region. Through sustainability and wellness efforts, attendees will be exposed to Leave No Trace principles, No Waste initiatives, and a vast array of outdoor experiences in Johnson City and beyond. An estimated 10,000 people attend the two-day festival. Free activities include live music in the amphitheater, zipline, bike course, demo pool, air dog shows, yoga, ropes course, rock wall, and more! There will be a variety of food options on-site, local beer selection, and vendors that encompass air, earth, and water themes.

Hello my fellow riders. Hope the summer is going great for you. I want to thank everyone who came to the Snake Pit Rally. It was a good one. Booze Creek Dirt Drags are coming up I thought it would be nice to give a little history about the Peacemakers Motorcycle Club and their event. But first on a personal note. I know a lot of the Peacemakers from all their Chapters. They have always shown my old man and I respect and love and have always supported us. I have watched them give so much back to those in need. They are some of the greatest Brothers and Sisters we have ever had the honor to hang out with. I know if I called any one of them at 2am and I’m broke down alongside the road they will come save me and not ask for anything in return. That’s family!!! Now for a history lesson. The Peacemakers Motorcycle Club was chartered in 1968 and has sponsored two field events
Beanz Biker Corner By Anne Hartley 423-297-5675
since the seventies. The club purchased land on Boozy Creek in1975 but had the early field meets and races at the Kingsport Speedway. It was not until1983 the club started having the events at their current location on Boozy Creek. Since then, the club has sponsored two field meets a year. The first event is in May on Mother’s Day weekend and the other event is on the July fourth weekend. There is always a slew of activities from music on Friday night to biker games, burn out contest, and bands on Saturday. On Sunday, awake to a hearty breakfast and then burgers or barbecue is served before you enter the bike show and watch the racing, unless you feel like competing and throwing some dirt. They end the event by crowning Miss Boozy Creek. There is plenty of prime camping and good food, so you don’t have to leave the party. Vendors will offer bike parts, tattoos, jewelry, and t-shirts etc…. This is an old-time rally that was throwing dirt long before all the bike nights and poker runs. Come enjoy one of the oldest rallies in Tennessee. The Boozy Creek chapter of the Peacemakers is the mother chapter with other chapters in Greeneville Tennessee, Richmond Kentucky, Berea Kentucky, Springfield Kentucky, and Cincinnati Ohio. All these chapters have parties and events throughout the year, so look them up on Facebook and check one of their events out. The oldest old school biker event in Tennessee (55 years). you create a rapport with your customers. It shows you are willing to hear your customers and fix the issues that create a barrier to sales. Show your customers that you are part of the solution, not the problem, by uncovering your weaknesses and creating solutions. If you could change one thing about your business, what would it be? That one thing could be your opportunity to boost sales and brand loyalty. Opportunities could include ways to tackle obstacles or ways to connect with your community. Missed opportunities could result in a loss of revenue, a decrease in brand loyalty, and a reputation management crisis. Was your business impacted by COVID? Threats can hit without warning. Johnson City Community Theatre Resumes Operations with Production of Grease! The Johnson City Community Theatre (JCCT), which has spent the past two years dark due to COVID, will open its 135th season in July with the allAmerican classic, Grease, at Freedom Hall Civic Center, 1320 Pactolas Road. “The pandemic may have restricted our services, but it also provided us with the opportunity to refocus, reimagine, and restructure how we operate and, more importantly, how we serve our community”, says JCCT Board President JJ Jeffers. “Our Board of Directors has been hard at work reinventing the efficacy of the organization. Part of our efforts and excitement is the introduction of our new creative leadership, Sprinkles & Pfeiffer Productions.” Sprinkles & Pfeiffer Productions brings Broadway to Johnson City with co-directors Kirk Sprinkles Pfeiffer, a Broadway veteran and current faculty member of East Tennessee State University’s Theatre and Dance Department, and Scott Pfeiffer, a New York City director/producer. “It is an exciting time to be joining
the JCCT family,” said Kirk Sprinkles Pfeiffer. “The partnership between us and JCCT has been in the works for the past year, all thanks to the passion and vision of JJ Jeffers. He has literally grown up performing and serving JCCT since he was a young child. It was JJ’s dedication and determination to see this theatre, his haven, thrive and his endearing sense of pride that sealed the deal in our collaboration. We are excited to be a part of JCCT, one of the oldest theatres in the State of Tennessee, and one of the oldest community theatres in the nation. As a Tennessee native, it warms my heart to be back in my home state and working with JJ and the rest of the amazing people affiliated with JCCT.” JCCT is expanding services and productions to alternate venues while renovations take place at the theater on East Maple Street. “Freedom Hall is an exciting venue for our post-pandemic comeback, and we look forward to being accessible to the community in various locations,” Jeffers said.
JCCT and Sprinkles & Pfeiffer Productions will produce Grease at Freedom Hall the week of July 9-17 with performances scheduled for July 9, 14, 15, and 16 at 8 p.m. Sunday performances on July 10 and 17 will be held at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available for purchase at www.JCcommunitytheatre.org. This summer, JCCT will offer two exciting theatre camps for youth ages 8 to 18. Both camps will be held at Freedom Hall. Registration is now available online at www.JCcommunitytheatre.org/ education. In the fall, JCCT and Sprinkles & Pfeiffer Productions will roll out a brand new education program for kids and adults.

Being a woman in the workforce is quite the experience regardless of what industry you’re in. One of my biggest pet peeves is people victimizing themselves and using their age/race/gender etc in order to explain away personal failures, but you’d truly have to be an idiot not to acknowledge that these biases definitely still exist. I’ve now spent 20 years of my life working, and in those 2 decades I’ve spent significant amounts of time in hospitality, sales and the automotive industry, and while those are all wildly different arenas they all share one common theme- they are male dominated industries. This factor can work both for and against women and I’ve experienced both personally, and my advice is to acknowledge it, embrace it and figure out how to make it work to your benefit instead of letting it become your demise. First and foremost, let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room for women- a man’s attraction to the opposite sex sometimes makes them stupid. The key is to navigate that in a way that works to your benefit, setting hard boundaries for your personal comfort zone, and being confident enough to enforce them when push comes to shove. Let’s face it, being a woman can open doors that a man in the same role can never even get close enough to knock on. On the flip side of the coin however, once you get in that door, you must be twice as sharp as a man to be taken seriously;
it’s the most frustrating double standard in existence. In my personal experience, a man’s attraction has resulted in outrageous tips from a drunken guest as a server/bartender, it’s landed me meetings and displays with hard-to-get clients in sales, and it was a way to make leery guests feel more relaxed on the auto showroom floor. My personal comfort level for playing into that is pretty high-I have no problem flexing my ‘womanly wiles’ to get what I want. However, I know that many women are not content engaging that way and that’s perfectly ok! You can still accomplish anything you want with nothing more than a smile and strong work ethic. The reason I am so comfortable playing into my looks and ‘dumb blonde’ routine is because I am so confident in my brand knowledge and I have no problem letting someone know if they’re making me uncomfortable. Most times I believe women are taken advantage of due to their natural inclination to “not want to cause a scene.” Well, I’m here to tell you right now, if you express yourself from the start, it will not seem like you’re causing a scene to firmly and politely tell someone they’ve crossed a line. You also have to have common sense; don’t put yourself in compromising situations with anyone for any amount of money. I’ve been asked to attend ticketed events with buyers in the alcohol industry and I jump at the opportunity to rub elbows, make them laugh and hope they get tipsy enough to commit to a deal. But those occasions are not the time to indulge myself. I have a drink or
two socially with plenty of water and help myself to food for a few hours, then I politely excuse myself with a yawn before the clock strikes an unreasonable hour. Above all, remaining in control is the biggest power move a woman can flex over a man; it trumps sexuality every single time- and it will always earn you respect. At the end of the day, you have to actually know what you’re doing to play “job” in the boys club. It doesn’t matter what you look like or how many men want to take you out; if you actually are clueless you’re never going to get anywhere. For your own self-growth, learn as much as possible about everything. I’ve found in life I’ve gotten further knowing a little about a lot than a lot about a little. Open your mind to the unknown and set goals for increasing your knowledge on events both historical and current. Then become an expert in your field, regardless of whether you’re a janitor or a CEO. If your only job with your current employer is to scrub the toilets, you become the best damned toilet scrubber they’ve ever seen. Take pride in your job, show up on time with a positive attitude every day, look your supervisor in the eye and say hello with a confident smile until there’s no way they can’t notice your work ethic and promote you to something else. Once you recognize the value in yourself, it’s impossible for others to ignore it. I’ve personally never felt more fulfilled and stimulated in my entire career than right now, but it’s because I’ve also never been more confident in myself as a woman. Those two things

go hand-in-hand. Women are wildly powerful, but unfortunately many of us never step into that power. We cower behind a man because it’s easier or less scary than striking out on our own. While I don’t think there is anything at all wrong about being a man’s support in the home, you have to unlock all your potential to be a whole person. It’s great to be taken care of, but what’s even better is knowing you’ve got options and you’re not “stuck” anywhere. A man will respect a woman more, both in relationships and careers, if she doesn’t “need” him…in fact, it will make him need HER. Embrace your femininity and stop victimizing yourself with it. It’s your most powerful weapon, not your Achilles heel!

With a new Jurassic Park film unleashed on the world (I'll talk about the new film in a future column), I have decided to look back at the other films in the film franchise. I first became familiar with the world of Jurassic Park via the novel by Michael Crichton. The novel was awesome, and when the film adaptation was announced, I was wondering how in the world this could be filmed with realistic dinosaurs. Flash forward to 1993, and with several friends in tow, we headed over the mountain from the Tri-Cities to Asheville to, at the time, a top notch theater to view the film for the first time. I will never forget the first time I saw the very realistic dinosaurs on the big screen. As if movie fans didn't realize this already, Steven Spielberg is a genius. After viewing the film my friends and I couldn't stop talking about what we had just seen. After many viewings, we all waited in anticipation for a sequel, and were rewarded with the 1997 release "The Lost World." For the few of you who may not know anything about the JP series, it basically involves dinosaurs who were genetically re-created,

who live on the island of Isla Nublar (a fictional island), and eventually will be presented as a tourist attraction called Jurassic Park. When the park's owner brings several experts in for a preview tour, chaos ensues due to the combination of industrial sabotage and a tropical storm. A "cat and mouse" game between humans and dinosaurs makes up the majority of the first film. The second film is set four years after the disaster at Jurassic Park, and the characters discover a Site B located on nearby Isla Sorna, where the dinosaurs were grown and hatched for the theme park. More excitement between humans and dinosaurs ensues, providing for a fun and satisfying sequel. The year 2001 saw the release of "Jurassic Park III", probably my least favorite of the film series. This effort was not directed by Spielberg, and only featured actor Sam Neill from the first two films in a major role. In my opinion this film was too brief in running time, missed opportunities for story development, and involved a group of people searching for their missing son who, after an accident, ends up on Isla Sorna with the dinosaurs. There is plenty of excitement, but this film is the weakest of the series in my opinion. Thus, the first JP trilogy ended with a thud. Moving forward to 2015, a new trilogy of films began with "Jurassic World", directed by Colin Trevorrow, and the film was a mega hit. New characters and actors were introduced in the new trilogy, including Chris Pratt, and Bryce Dallas Howard. The plot involves a new park called Jurassic World, a dinosaur theme park once again housed on Isla Nublar. The park is huge, and features a dinosaur that never existed
in real life, and was invented for the park (trouble!). Due to unexpected happenings, the dinosaurs break free, putting the park visitors in extreme danger. The really awesome part of this film is how Chris Pratt's character Owen Grady has trained a trio of vicious Velciraptors, one of which is his favorite named Blue. The raptors will eventually play a role in helping save our human characters. The film ends with the park being abandoned like in the original film. 2018 saw the release of "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom", and was also very successful. The stars of the 2015 film returned and the plot involves an attempted rescue of the remaining dinosaurs from an impending volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar. While on the island Owen and Clare (Howard) discover a group of
mercenaries are attempting to gather the dinosaurs and bring them to the US mainland. After much excitement on the island, the dinosaurs are transported to a large estate, where they are to be sold on the black market. Of course, Owen and Claire are attempting to prevent this from happening, and by the end of the film all the dinosaurs are released to roam across the United States, setting up the new film in the final trilogy (?), now in theaters. "Jurassic Park" has been a fun and exciting film series, and who doesn't love dinosaurs? The original film brought about groundbreaking special effects, which like the original "Star Wars" film, forever changed the landscape of cinema.

As I said earlier this is a three-disc affair. The first disc gives us “Shaft” in 4K UHD. This new master was also used for the Standard High Definition presentation on the first blu-ray, which holds bonus features, then a second blu-ray has more bonus features and the sequel to “Shaft” 1972’s “Shaft’s Big Score!” I love it when Criterion includes a whole movie as a bonus feature. The new 4K restoration was sourced from the film’s original 35mm camera negative, with a duplicate negative used for sections that were heavily damaged. The results are stunning, I’d argue the film looks better than when it first hit theaters over 50 years ago. The colors pop, and those marvelous Noir-esq dark compositions on-screen look inky black. It’s a stunning presentation of the film.

There’s the featurette “A Complicated Man: The Shaft Legacy” from 2019, more period behind-thescenes footage from “Shaft’s Big Score!” Capping it all are trailers and other promo material, plus an essay by school Amy Abugo Ongiri. All of this is wrapped up in absolutely stunning new artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz. “Shaft” is a great, iconic movie. One that was well overdue an edition as richlayered as this new one from Criterion. All of the bonus material provides great context and deep info about the making of the film and its place and importance in film history.
