Hello Loafer Readers! I hope everyone is having a great week so far. I can’t believe July is here already! One month of summer is gone. July is bringing some exciting things to our area……..Hard Rock Hotel and Casino! Who thought we would ever have a casino in our area?! Even if you are not the gambling type surely you can appreciate the jobs and tourism this will bring to us. Good things! July brings even hotter temperatures so please make sure you are staying hydrated and that your outside animals have shade and water. I hate to even say it but please don’t ever leave your small children in a hot car. Those stories are so sad! If we can help you with any of your advertising, please let us know. Thank you for your continued support!

Thomas Taylor, A Tribute to Conway Twitty Thursday, July 28, 2022 7:00 PM Tribute artist Thomas Taylor has always been seen with a microphone in his hands since he was a very young boy. Growing up, Conway Twitty was always a legend that Thomas looked up to that still holds true to him today. Hitting the highs and lows of the notes that Conway could sing never shows to be a problem with Thomas’ voice. Thomas finds the heart of all of the lyrics to Conway Twitty’s songs and puts his all back into them like Conway always did, with a passion and a fire to light up a room. With heart and soul, Thomas and his band are honored to put on a show-stopping performance honoring the late and great Conway Twitty.
A Tribute to Journey, DEPARTURE! Friday, July 22, 2022 7:00 PM In their 14th year together, Departure is the most respected Journey tribute band in the nation. They pride themselves on giving their audience an incredible high-energy, qualitative stage show from start to finish. Dressed in the iconic tuxedo jacket, Depalead vocalist, Brian Williams, has an amazing singing voice, flawlessly matching Steve Perry’s vocal range and on-stage movements.
A Tribute to The Beach Boys BAND OF OZ Friday, July 29, 2022 7:00 PM The Band of Oz was formed in 1967 as a part-time band playing fraternity parties and high school proms all over the South. In 1977 the band went on the road full time. Since that time the band has made an exceptional name for itself throughout the Southeast by playing the top clubs and corporate parties, and getting excellent reviews along the way. For several years the group has been a guest on most of the major beach concerts in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia.

Color My World Healthy Quillen students teach, encourage city youth through outreach program Quillen College of Medicine students take part in numerous community outreach endeavors – from Remote Area Medical Events to Habitat for Humanity – in keeping with the college’s mission to reach the underserved. One opportunity unique to Quillen allows students to have an impact close to home, in the Carver Community of downtown Johnson City. “Color My World Healthy” benefits both young and old in this predominantly Black community. Through this program, Quillen students design and teach classes to students in after-school activities at the city’s Carver Recreation Center and Langston Centre in downtown. They teach such topics as nutrition, fitness, anatomy, and more. “Meet the Doctor” helps the children understand the need for medical doctors and that there is no need to be afraid to go to the doctor. A “Keep Kids Off Drugs” class is sometimes taught in tandem with Gatton College of Pharmacy students. The program is dear to the heart of Elaine Evans, who recently retired as the community consumer health specialist at Quillen College of Medicine Library. “We have a captive audience,” says Evans, who applied for the initial $25,000 grant to fund the program from the National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health. “After they finish their homework, they come to class. ‘Meet the Doctor’ is their favorite. They love it. The medical students bring their instruments and show them, ‘This is how we listen to your heart.’” As an offshoot of the youth program, Color My World Healthy has expanded its reach to the adults in the community, both at Carver Rec and neighboring churches, with health fairs and classes on health topics specific to minority groups and the elderly.
It is hoped that “Color My World Healthy” will have another benefit besides educating youth on health topics – that of recruiting more minority students to the health professions. Professor Rick Wallace of the QCOM Library points to a disheartening statistic from the “Black Men in White Coats” documentary that was screened at Carver in 2021, which is that 4% of physicians are African Americans. And Evans notes that only two African American men from the Johnson City-Washington County area have graduated from Quillen. “What I get, from having my ear to the ground,” Evans says, “is that they graduate from high school thinking, ‘There’s no way I can go to college and become anything. I’m poor; my parents don’t have any money.’ So we want to start at the elementary and then high school level, and make minority kids aware that ‘Yes, there is a path for you. You just have to learn what it is and how to follow it.’”

Through “Color My World Healthy,” med students like Michaela Williamson spend one-on-one time with students, including in the “How to Become a Doctor” class, sharing their own stories and describing the pathway to becoming physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. “We’re all really excited about tutoring and teaching about different medical disciplines,” said Williamson, a second-year medical student from Hendersonville, Tennessee, who is president of the Student National Medical Association chapter at Quillen. “The reason that a lot of us, myself included, came to Quillen is because we want to work in underserved areas, and we want to recruit as much diversity to medicine as possible. Carver Rec is a community hub, and to get plugged in there will be an opportunity not just for us to work with those kids, but also network and see where else we’re needed. A lot of people in our organization have a real passion for community service work.”

Hello, hope you are having a great summer. Last article was about the history of the Peacemakers Motorcycle Club and their event. So, this week I thought it might be nice to learn a little bit about the Hillbillies and Veteran Bikers (not a club). This ride was started by Martin in 2014. Martin started this ride to help local veterans in need. It has grown into one of the biggest rides in our area. He wanted to start the ride in East Tennessee and end in Maggie Valley North Carolina at the Hillbilly Jam and the Hillbilly Show and Shine. Hillbilly Jam has not always been called the Hillbilly Jam. In its first year it was called Hillbilly Woodstock but the name had to be changed when a lawyer from New York called and the name Woodstock had been patented and they could use the name. Useless Facts: 1. One of the greatest misconceptions of the 4th of July lies in the name and date. It is widely believed that America declared their independence from Britain on July 4, 1776. However, the official vote actually took place two days before and the “Declaration” was published in papers on July 4. 2. Americans Will Enjoy 150 Million Hot Dogs During the 4th According to the National Sausage and Hot Dog Council 3. Only Two Men Signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 Charles Thompson and the infamous John Hancock were the only two men who actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The other 54 delegates signed over the course of the next month. 4. There is Something Written on the Back of the Declaration of Independence... and no, it isn't a treasure map written in invisible ink. According to the History Channel, a simple message is written upside-down across the bottom of the signed document that reads, "Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776." According to the same article, no one knows who wrote this or when, but it was believed to have been added as a label during the years of the
between June and July, almost 70% were experienced by men. 8. Bottoms Up with 2x the Rum. On the second anniversary of Independence Day in 1778, American troops were fighting the American Revolutionary War. During this time, George Washington ordered a double ration of rum for American soldiers to celebrate the holiday with. 9. Fireworks = An American Tradition Dating Back to 1777 Fireworks date back as a tradition of Independence Day as early as the first anniversary in 1777. John Adams wrote in a letter to his wife, Abigail, that he wanted Independence Day to be celebrated with pomp, parade, shows, and "Illuminations." This original letter was written when Adams presumed that Independence Day would be celebrated on July 2. 10. A Little Late to the Parade, July 4th was not deemed a federal holiday until 1870, nearly 100 years after the nation was founded.

Of the 56 signers, the youngest signers, Thomas Lynch Jr. and Edward Rutledge of South Carolina, were only 26. However, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania was the oldest signer at 70 years old. 6. The Declaration of Independence Was Written on a Laptop ... Okay, not a modern laptop, but still. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on a writing desk that could fit over one's lap. This device was referred to at the time as a "laptop." 7. Men Love Fireworks... $1 Billion Worth According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, Americans spend more than $1 billion on fireworks each year. Out of this, only 10% of firework displays are set off professionally, which probably accounts for the estimated 12,900 firework-related emergency room visits across the country. According to Fortune Magazine, of those injuries occurring

What do you do when your values differ from that of the rest of your company? A difference of opinion can be frustrating, but there are several solutions. Have a talk with the rest of your staff. Expressing all viewpoints will bring ideas that may not have been thought of. Brainstorm ideas on how to come to a solution that will bring the best outcome. Stepping away from the situation may help clear your mind and see things from another perspective, or at least calm a heated situation. Take at least a ten minute break from everyone involved and

If you’ve been following along with this column over the last 4 years, you probably already know I consider July 6th my personal Independence Day, as it’s the official day I moved into my home in Nashville. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the story, 3 years ago I walked away from everything I’d ever known, used every cent of my savings and uprooted my entire life for a move to Nashville where I basically knew one person and took a job I was incredibly underqualified to do. In one sense I was running from problems and in another I was being pushed out of my comfort zone, but regardless, it was ultimately what I needed to be able to progress.
my childhood home. Lost a lot of friendships. Walked away from a distributor job to wait tables. Financial struggles. Hormonal issues that have taken a toll on my mental and physical health. And all these hardships I endured alone, because I’ve ultimately realized all this time later I’m no more healed from heartbreak than I was 3 years ago and am honestly wondering if I might just be permanently unlovable.

swings as far forward as it does backward. I am focusing on things I can control that pay off for me like my career and nurturing the close friends and family I still have. I want to work toward relieving some of the debt that befell me from losing work for half a year and having no backup savings after the move. And even though I’m understanding and accepting myself more every day, I’ve still got some work to do on loving myself. But all that stuff is a constant journey that probably shouldn’t have an end point. I think making health a priority is the obvious answer to many of those issues. Lastly, I’m ever hopeful that someone proves me wrong in the romance department, but so far no luck. Sometimes I think you only get one shot at greatness.
I re-read my column from this time last year and at that time in my life I was very proud of the way I had single-handedly navigated all of life’s curveballs. I’m still very proud of that, but knowing you can do it all on your own doesn’t make it any less exhausting. This year I’m tired. The dinosaurs of the "Jurassic Park" film series are back on the big screen and film fans are flocking to theaters. "Jurassic Park: Dominion" wraps up the series that began with the original film in 1993. This outing brings together the stars of the current films: Chris Pratt as Owen Grady, Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing, and Isabella Sermon as Maisie Lockwood together with the stars of the original films: Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcom, and BD Wong as Dr. Henry Wu. So let the fun begin! The film is set four years after the events of "Fallen Kingdom", with dinosaurs living alongside humans with mixed results. Claire, the former operations manager for the now closed Jurassic World Park, is continuing her work with the Dinosaur Protection Group, and he and Owen live in a remote cabin with Maisie (who was revealed in the previous film to be a clone), in order to keep her safe from Biosyn Genetics, who want the girl for medical experiments. One day at the cabin, Owen's trained Velociraptor, Blue, shows up at

the cabin with an offspring Maisie christens as Beta. Meanwhile, large previously extinct locusts have begun threatening the world's food supply, and Dr. Sattler begins an investigation into the pests, later seeking help from Dr. Grant. The two are able to visit Biosyn, thanks to Dr. Malcom, who is a resident speaker now working for the company. Dr. Malcom has invited the duo to help uncover the truth behind the experiments at Biosyn. Meanwhile, Maisie and Beta are kidnapped by Biosyn operatives to be taken to the plant. This results in pursuit by Owen and Claire who are aided in their effort to rescue Maisie and Beta by former Air Force pilot Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise). The trio fly to the Biosyn location, where they unexpectedly crash land after an encounter with a group of Quetzalcoatlus (flying dinosaurs). Just before the crash, Owen insists Claire jettison out of the plane to save her life. After she lands in a tree, Claire must ward off various dinosaurs until she is able to reunite with Own and Kayla. Meanwhile, events at Biosyn turn chaotic after Dr.r. Sattler and Dr. Grant break into a restricted area in order stea a locust sample in order to devise a way to stop the creatures from devisating the earth. Eventually all the characters meet to the delight of the fans of the series, providing many great moments of nostalgia and witty dialogue. The story features the expected thrills and excitement, and we all know the main reason we love these films: the dinosaurs. I really enjoyed the interaction between the characters of the original films and the current ones. Speaking of the actors from the original films, they step back into their roles as if hardly any time has passed. It's
hard to believe the first film dates back to 1993! The action and intrigue in the storyline is on par with any James Bond film, and only amps up the thrills when the dinosaurs do our favorite activity: chase humans. Original director Steven Spielberg is back as one of the executive producers, and Colin Trevorrow, who directed the previous films, returns to the helm. My only disappointment with the film was I had hoped the
character of Kayla Watts would be the daughter of Ian Malcom, who was seen in "The Lost World". To me this was a missed opportunity. Other than that nitpick, "Jurassic Park: Dominion" is everything you expect in a popcorn flick released in the hot summer months: fun! Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13)

The scariest things aren’t found in movies designed to make us jump and toss our popcorn all over a darkened theater. Oh, no, my friends, far from it. The scariest things are a wide and varied list of things that can transpire. People’s exhibit A is the morning that I woke to make myself a coffee only to find a coffee maker not willing to go along with the idea.
but soon I found myself coming to terms with myself. This was a household emergency so I pushed all work I had for the day to the side till I could get a new coffee maker. That important Zoom call with the people at Jensens Foods would have to wait till my house was coffee capable once more.
It didn’t take long to find the right coffee maker for me. It was perfect. Programable, thermal carafe. I I am very much a “do not talk to me until I’ve had one cup” person could enjoy fresh, hot coffee well into the afternoon. I was excited, in the mornings. I need that time the part of my brain that gives alone to clear my head and come to terms with myself. So the idea of me anxiety was thrilled. For has facing the day without my morning a human truly lived till they’ve pushed themselves to the limits of coffee was a horror I couldn’t the workday in a coffee-induced fathom. Sure, I could have gotten anxiety attack? I think not, where in the car and driven down to the McDonald’s not far from my home are my accolades for being an extreme sports athlete? and grabbed a cup. But this was the early morning confusion time. The coffee maker was bought, I was in no state to operate an rinsed, and set up. The first week automobile. with it was a blissful experience. I programmed the machine to I drank a coke that was in the fridge and prayed. Prayed that my start brewing at 7:45 on the dot, body would accept this caffeinated the time I usually start to wake up. By 8:00, I could walk from my liquid as a substitute for my bedroom, down the hallway to morning coffee. It took a while, the kitchen, bathed in the aroma of coffee much like velvet draped upon a royal. It was heavenly. I felt a new spring in my step. The flowers smelled sweeter, the birds sounded prettier, and the sun shone brighter.

By Andy Ross theloaferonlineprint @gmail.com
This bliss, however, was doomed to only last for a few weeks. As I began my second month with the coffee maker I noticed something odd happened. I woke up at 7:45 and began the walk down the hallway to the kitchen at 8:00 as usual. There was no aroma though. No velveteen coffee scents to drape my body. Instead, it was the rough, woolen sweater of nothingness. The coffee was there, in the pot, but the scent of the brewing was long gone. My coffee maker has a faulty clock
inside that slowly gets faster the more it’s left on. Each week it will gain another seven minutes in time. How did I learn this? I was up early one morning with insomnia that plagues me a couple of times throughout the year. As I was wrestling with a way to knock myself back out, I soon detected it. The aroma of hope, the smell of bliss, the velvet my worn and tattered soul had longed for in the mornings. It was the coffee brewing, at 5:45 in the morning. Since I was up I grabbed a pad, pencil, and protractor and began to do the math. The clock needed to be reset, and now it was up to me to do so every Sunday night. I can live with up to seven minutes off, but not two hours off. I thought about returning the coffee maker, but it was already out of the return window and I had
gone past the 100 pots brewed expiration mark on the warranty. Perfection is sometimes a foolish pursuit, for none of us are perfect, and none of our coffee makers are either. I now am glad to say I have a happy relationship with it currently. We do the weekly reset and my mornings are once again velvet and happy. It seems to have made a noticeable difference in my demeanor. My friends all say I look happier and seem more confident. Imagine their surprise when I told them it was only coffee and not the hair club for men. Imagine my anger that they thought I had joined the hair club for men. All this time I thought I had a good haircut. Anyways, may your mornings be velvety and coffee laden. See you next week.
