NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Friends! Happy July! National month of Ice cream. Who doesn’t love a good ice cream on a hot day? What is your favorite? I have many but I really love a good hot fudge cake. Grab a friend or loved one this week and grab an ice cream! Send us pics and you may see it in a future Loafer. I should have mentioned this much earlier but I do want to encourage everyone to watch for motorcycles. Seems like we have already had several deaths this year so let’s do our part to keep those riders safe please. I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer and finding some time to have some fun. Let us know if we can help you with advertising. Thank you for your continued support!

We All Scream for Ice Cream By [https://EzineArticles.com/ expert/Dale_Phillip/1169732] Dale Phillip We may think of ice cream as a modern creation because it’s frozen, but ancient flavored ices date back to those inventive Chinese, who started eating their version as far back as 3000 B.C. Originally it was snow or ice mixed with honey and perhaps a few berries. And once again, that adventurous explorer Marco Polo may get credit for bringing back the idea from China to his native Italy, where the royal court of the Medici family embraced it. These ices were the forerunner of our modern day Italian Ice, sorbet and sherbet. In 1553, Catherine de Medici married French king Henry II and introduced him to the frozen delight. It was a big hit at court, but like so many other specialties, ices were available only to the elite, and the masses were left out. By the mid-seventeenth century, chefs were using dairy mixed with ice and called it “cream ice.” Lacking freezers, some Italian cooks had “runners” who were sent up into the mountains for snow, racing back with their precious cargo before it melted. The frozen concoction was reported to be a favorite of Julius Caesar and

his buddies. A commoner had no chance of sampling the royal treat until the first known ice cream shop, Caf Procope, was opened in Paris in the year 1660 by a Sicilian named Procopio. He added eggs and cream to his recipe, and the world’s love affair with this frozen treat began. Italians eventually created their own version and called it gelato. The first official account of ice cream in the U.S. shows up in a letter written in 1744 by a guest of Maryland Governor William Bladen. The first known advertisement for ice cream appeared in the a New York newspaper on May 12, 1777, when confectioner Philip Lenzi announced that ice cream was available in his shop “almost every day.” Presidents Washington, Jefferson and Madison all served the frozen treat at state dinners. With the invention of insulated ice houses around 1800, the manufacturing of ice cream was rolled-out on a mass scale. An industrious Baltimore milk dealer named Jacob Fussell introduced the residents of his city to this delicious product in 1851, and as mechanical inventions and technology increased, new forms of freezing and homogenizing the milk and cream became possible.

As ice cream spread across the country, drug stores began featuring the popular dessert by installing soda fountains. With the invention of the ice cream soda, the familiar title “soda jerk” became a household word. When churches condemned the consumption as sinful, especially on the Sabbath, the clever fountain owners eliminated the fizzy water on Sundays to appease the clergy and served a simple ice cream “sundae” instead. One might surmise that Sunday was probably the most popular day of the week to indulge. Growing up in the 50’s, who didn’t sneak some change from mom’s handbag to ride their bikes to the closest local store and buy a Popsicle, a Fudgsicle or a Drumstick cone? There was no stopping us, as we were smitten. Not content with simple flavors, the appearance of gourmet ice cream in the 1970’s took its place in the form of premium, high butterfat brands (and high prices), introduced by Haagen Dazs, Ben and Jerry’s and many local dairies. Dove Bars became the rage, after a humble beginning in a local candy shop on the northwest side of Chicago, and had been a neighborhood favorite for three decades before the Mars Candy

Company purchased the recipe in 1985. All of which demonstrated that Americans gladly paid higher prices for premium brands and inventive flavors. So there you have it in a nutshell. Be it a sundae, a chocolate ice cream soda, soft serve, gelato, a pint of rich premium or the many novelty ice cream creations in the freezer of your local supermarket, we don’t have to scream for it anymore. It’s everywhere. Author Dale Phillip, an admitted ice cream fiend, gets weak in the knees just thinking about a hot fudge sundae with coffee ice cream. As a child, it was Fudgsicles and Drumsticks, and an occasional Good Humor Chocolate Malt bar, when her father could flag down a cruising white truck and treat her. She laments the fact that her childhood favorites are now difficult to find, including Butter Pecan and New York Cherry. Visit her other articles on ezine under Food and Drink. Hello again hope you have been enjoying the weather and keeping your knees in the breeze. Hope you have been enjoying my little articles. The last few weeks I have you given you history lessons on a couple of motorcycle clubs. This week let’s talk about the Howling Wolves, Stars, and History Ride that the Southern Dozen have in their handout. Whether you’re traveling with the pack, or howling up the road as a lone wolf, this ride holds a destination well worth the visit. Just a few twists of the throttle will take you to a land isolated from noise and urban life—a land where deer, wild turkeys, and otters thrive alongside owls, beavers, and falcons as the waters of the mountain lake ripple and glistens in the sun. When you hear the call of this land’s noisiest inhabitants— the wolves—you’ll know you’ve reached Bays Mountain Park. Bays Mountain Park is a 3,550 acres (14.4 km2) nature park and planetarium located on Bays Mountain in Kingsport, Tennessee. The park features a nature center and outdoor native animal

displays. There is also a herpetarium with snakes and amphibians. The Park features a picturesque 44-acre lake, hiking trails, a Nature Center with a state-of-the-art Planetarium Theater, and Animal Habitats featuring wolves, bobcats, raptors and reptiles. The Pennsylvania Assembly had the Liberty Bell

3515 Bristol Hwy Ste 101 Johnson City, TN • www.bikerweartn.com • (423) 631-0542 made in 1751 to mark the 50-year anniversary of William Penn's 1701 Charter of Privileges, which served as Pennsylvania's original Constitution. 2. What is written on the Bell? The following Bible verse is on the Bell: “Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." Also included is information about the Pennsylvania Assembly and the Bell’s maker. 3. No one knows today when the Bell was cracked. The crack is a big subject of debate among historians. One theory is the Bell got its first crack in 1752 when it was tested upon its arrival in Philadelphia. 4. The last big crack happened on Washington’s Birthday. The Liberty Bell cracked up, literally, in February 1846, when it was rung on President’s Day, celebrated on Washington’s birthday, and then stopped ringing because of damage from a major crack. 5. The Liberty Bell rang often during its functional lifetime. Between 1753 and 1846, the Bell tolled for many people and occasions. It rang to mark the signing of the Constitution, and the deaths of Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson. 6. The Liberty Bell wasn’t the first name of this icon. The bell was originally known as the State House Bell. In the late 1830s, it acquired the name of the Liberty Bell when it became a symbol of the anti-slavery movement.

7. The bell probably didn’t ring on July 4, 1776. A magazine writer in 1847 made up the story of the bell ringing on the first Independence Day. 8. The bell may also not have rung on July 8, 1776. It is known that bells in the city of Philadelphia were ringing to celebrate the public announcement of the Declaration of Independence. According to the Independence Hall Association, the statehouse steeple was under repair at the time, making it unlikely for the Liberty Bell to be in use. But with no contemporary accounts, we just don't know. 9. The Bell did go on a Revolutionary road trip. In 1777, the Bell was removed from Philadelphia under armed guard and taken to Allentown, Pa., where it was hidden in a church. The fear was the British would melt the Bell and use it to make cannons. It came back to Philadelphia the following year. 10. The Liberty Bell last hit the road in 1915. Back in the day, the Bell went on tour around the United States, but in the days before World War I, it became clear the Bell had condition issues. Today, it resides at the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, where it is occasionally tapped to mark special occasions.

Friendships used to live or die by the “Myspace 8.” We had one guaranteed friend… Tom. We coded our pages to match our personalities and chose our home page song based on our mood. The Myspace era was a simpler time. Our pages were full of the important things in life, like who was crushing on who, what was trending, and the best songs. We were carefree and happy. Our online world is now full of depressing news and political views. It’s a dark world where positivity is a rarity. The Myspace era needs to make a comeback. Instead of forced politics and horrendous news, we need more uplifting content. We need the feeling of being carefree and happy again. Our newsfeeds need

to be filled with people lifting each other up instead of school shootings. We need less trying to keep up with everyone else and more using the internet to make ourselves better people. Social media needs a retro shift back to the way it used to be. Before influencers caused us to believe our lives aren’t good enough because we aren’t jet setting to every photogenic location in the world. Before Photoshop became the reason for our insecurities. It’s up to us to make the change. How will you start the shift? Myspace currently exists in a much different format than the original at myspace.com.

We Need the Myspace Era Again

Last weekend I got hit with one of my “a-ha” moments, where something that seems so obvious but I just wasn’t getting smacked me in the face. Frankly, I love it when that happens; it’s like my subconscious is slapping me back to reality. Sunday of July 4th weekend was my only day off for essentially 3 weeks, so I really wanted to do something fun. I tried all week to make plans and everyone was out of town. Then when I finally got an invitation for a fun boat outing, I got news that a family member had passed away and had to cancel. After a couple hours of moping around I resigned myself to just going to the gym because I literally had no excuse not to. As I lay on my mat cooling down and trying to recover from my workout, I realized in the most backward way the universe was actually giving me exactly what I’ve been asking for all these months – having the time available to focus on my health. Because whoever is out there answering prayers doesn’t just grant wishes by letting me wake up 25lbs lighter, I had to be given a lesson, and you’d think by now I would be pretty adept at identifying those. Life doesn’t do handouts, especially not for me. I have

to work for the blessings and they never come without sacrifice. In this instance, I’ve been feeling lonely and sorry for myself because my social life has essentially dwindled to non-existent. But all that newfound free time is the perfect opportunity to prioritize getting back on track physically. Being on the wrong half of my 30s, it’s getting harder and harder to maintain my weight. Add to that the chaotic nature of my schedules over the last 2 years and it’s been nearly impossible to commit to daily workouts like I used to. Without the temptations of dinners and happy hours with friends seducing me away from the gym, I cannot rationalize not utilizing that time for the fitness – I literally have nothing else to do. It’s also easier to eat well because I’m staying home and cooking, at least when I’m not on the road. Another backward benefit, albeit an unhealthy one, is that my old anxiety diet is still tried and true and back in full effect, which has kick-started a much needed weight loss. I’ve mentioned my issues with hormones as of late and one of those problems has been that I cannot lose weight no matter what I do. Luckily for me, when I get severely anxious I lose my appetite completely. Again, definitely not a healthy route, but it’s inspiring to know that it’s at least still possible to drop

weight since I’ve not seen the needle on the scale move in a downward trajectory in a year and a half. And I think it will trigger my body’s responses to healthy foods and exercise going forward. It’s important to acknowledge the silver linings that come along with hardships. This is how you’re able to look back and say “I wouldn’t trade those tough times for the world.” It always comes down to controlling what you can and letting go of what you can’t. Acknowledging that these difficulties might actually be for your own good can be hard. Like your parents the universe might not give you what you want but it always gives you what you need. These times of solitude have been hard, but they’ve also been wonderful for inward reflection and weeding out relationships that maybe I had outgrown. It also might be saving me from something worse, as I sometimes do dumb things when partaking in too much “fun.” There are even lessons to be learned from the passing of a loved one, as sad as that is. I needed this time to process this painful loss, and I’m not being tempted to turn to destructive coping mechanisms like I have in the past. It’s impossible to always look on the bright side. We’re all human and sometimes you need a “why me” break where you feel sorry for yourself,

by Kathie Scalf but you don’t need to unpack your suitcase and live there. Have a cry, spend a day in bed, then start looking at the opportunities the hardships are opening up for you. Ask yourself what good can come from the pain, the lesson, or the loss, then shift your focus to that. I’ve said it a thousand times but I’ll say it again – you can either be a victim or victorious, the choice is entirely yours to make. I’m on the road for 2 weeks straight so let’s see if I can put my money where my mouth is and maintain this level of positive focus. It might be tough! I hope you all find your own silver linings in the coming days if you need them! Til next week…

XO - Kathie

If you love animals, have pets, or just love a show that will make you happy and filled with wonder then I suggest you check out the new Netflix show "The Hidden Lives of Pets." The series is four episodes long and follows various humans and their extraordinary pets. The first episode is entitled "Intelligence" and features a border collie who loves to BASE jump with his master, a dancing cockatoo, and racing rats. I especially enjoyed the border collie in this episode who after watching his human BASE jump many times, is eventually thrilled to jump off a cliff with his owner. Of course the dancing cockatoo is a hoot to watch and has become a social media star. The second episode is called "Communication" and highlights a canine who communicates with his human by pressing buttons that say various words, sometimes even two

at a time to make a small sentence. The dog's ability is being studied for the ability to see how humans and dogs can better communicate. The episode also features the vocal abilities of parrots, one of which lives in a zoo, and has the uncanny knack of "teasing" his trainer. Episode three is entitled "Super Senses" and displays the fascinating heat-seeking abilities of newly born puppies whose eyes haven't opened, soccer playing goldfish (yes!) and a cat who loves hiking with his human, and has the ability to always get them back to camp via a built-in GPS. The fourth and final episode of the series is entitled "Athletes" and features the ultra-speedy greuster dogs, the agility of a rabbit, and some endurance champ tortoises. The series is narrated by Hugh Bonneville of "Downton Abbey" fame and his voice is perfect for the series. We all know animals have various talents, but this series really brings said talents into the spotlight. Have you ever seen a rabbit paint? Dogs that predict seizures? A rat driving a car? A surfing dog? A lizard that can perform an act of opening a closed window after watching a video with instructions? Well you will on this show! Every episode is full of surprises, and will make you look twice at your pet or the one living next

door. Animals have always been more intelligent than they often are credited for, as this series clearly displays. Even if you have no pets, you may want to adopt or buy one after viewing the series. I highly recommend this show for the entire family, and kids will especially enjoy seeing all the fascinating abilities of the animals featured. The

series is a quick watch with all episodes running 33 minutes and under. If you need a break from the harsh realities of the world, be sure to catch "The Hidden Lives of Pets" now playing on Netflix. (Rated TV-G)

I’m old enough to remember when moving a TV was one of the least desirable things you could do. TVs were, once upon a time, large, heavy, boxy affairs. Even a modestly sized 27-inch screen would weigh a hefty amount. Then, much like seasons in the sun, things changed. TV’s got flatter and wider and lighter. Moving a 27-inch screen now is nothing. One person can do it with great ease. My 56 HD rear projection is fairly lightweight, just awkward, and needs another person to help move it around. It truly felt like an evolution of technology. Then it had to go and die on me. To be fair the TV was 16 years old, that’s not a bad run for a TV. It was state of the art in 2006, but today it’s a little behind the times. I was dreading going to buy a new TV, I find most salespeople just want to sell me dazzle and don’t know how to respond when I ask things like “How does a black and white movie look on it?” The odds were truly in my favor when I went

Batteries Not Included

By Andy Ross theloaferonlineprint @gmail.com

to the big box store to look at a TV, as I walked into a cluster of people talking about how great Brian Wilson, the genius behind The Beach Boys is. I had found my people. I didn’t think it would go so quickly. Yet I was out of the store in 20 minutes ready to load my new TV into the back of my SUV. I picked a very modern TV with a very thin screen. A screen so thin it reminded me that I was living in the future and mad that there are still no flying cars. Considering that TV technology has progressively gotten lighter, I could only imagine how easy it would be to move this wafer-thin TV around. The salesperson came out to help me load the TV, they lifted one end and I lifted the other. I grunted, the TV was not the light Sunday walk through the park I was expecting it

to be, but it was heavy. Downright as heavy as a larger, older boxy TV. We managed to get the TV loaded, I was trying to act cool and not like my arms wanted to detach themselves from my body and run away. The real problem was what to do when I got it home. I couldn’t unload this mastodon alone. I first thought about calling my friend, Brumley, to help. Brumley is a part of this new thing on TikTok called “barbel Tok” where he dresses and acts like an old-time weightlifter. Brumley has a curled mustache and a striped shirt he wears everywhere. Sometimes when Brumley comes by he chugs a dozen raw eggs, will flex, and make proclamations like “Behold the power of oats!” The only problem is that he does this when you ask him something simple like “How

are things going?” Brumley was unavailable, he was out of state being a keynote speaker at “Flex Con.” Undaunted I thought I would give it a try myself, one attempt at that barely budged the thing so that was it. Luckily, I was able to get a neighbor to come and help me. It was indeed awkward getting the beast out of the SUV, but then we both managed to carry the thing into my home. That was, luckily, the worst of it. Unpacking and getting it into place wasn’t too bad. It’s funny, though, to think that maybe TVs have had a “full circle” moment. We went from heavy to light, to heavy again. Then again, when you buy a fancy TV with a screen thinner than a pencil, you’d want it as weighed down as much as possible too. See you next week, with arm strain.
