FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Friends! Dog Days of Summer are the hottest days. That seems to be very fitting right now. It has been hot for sure! How are you staying cool? I know the lakes, swimming pools and beaches are busy. I had a few days in Pigeon Forge with my family and we went to Soaky Mountain Water Park. It was a great way to spend a hot day for the whole family! We also spent an entire day cooling off in the pool. Family time is the best time! Please let us know if we can help you with your advertising. Thank you as always for your continued support!

Have you met Knight? He is absolutely gorgeous! Now, we have to be sincere with you... no guy is perfect, especially such a handsome fella. Knight lived in a hoarder situation and wasn’t neutered until he came to the Bridge Home. He is trying REALLY hard to use his litter box, but sometimes he would still spray somewhere else, almost always close to

the box. For that reason, he might be a good choice for someone who has a space to put the litter box where this wouldn’t be an issue.

There are 5 Red Birds hidden in this issue of The Loafer. Can you find them all?

Knight promises he will pay you back with his love! Knight likes human attention and playing with feathers. He is current on vaccinations and microchipped.

To all my fellow riders out there, rather you are on 2 wheels or 4 wheels please always watch out for yourself and others. A lot of new riders have popped up. Be safe and as always keep your knees in the breeze. I thought this week it might be nice to share a little insight about The Tail of the Dragon. This nationally and internationally famous stretch of road is renowned for being a uniquely twisty and rollercoaster-like motorcycle ride. Tennessee's Dragon's Tail actually begins in North Carolina, dipping deeper into Tennessee as you go. This 11-mile stretch of road has an incredible total of 318 curves. The US 129 highway now has a cult following, with riders and sports car drivers

Beanz Biker Corner By Anne Hartley 423-297-5675

alike coming specifically to the area to test out their ride's capabilities. There are occasional events and rallies on the road too, so check before you go to make sure the traffic isn't too intense. Designated US 129, the road is bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest with no intersecting roads or driveways to hamper your travel. It is considered a destination throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Can you brave it? It’s best to be cautious as the turns are tight, but the Tail of the Dragon is guaranteed to be the ride of your life. The nearby Cherohala Skyway is quickly becoming a destination too, with its remote 60 miles of breathtaking scenic mountain highway. The area also has other incredible roads like the Moonshiner 28, Foothills Parkway, Smoky Mountain Loop, Devils Triangle, Blue Ridge Parkway, The Gambler NC209, Diamondback 226, Devil's Staircase, Six Gap North Georgia, The Snake US421 and many Great Forest Service Dual Sport and Jeep Roads. Scenic 129 is a study of US Highway 129 which stretches from Chiefland, Florida to Knoxville, Tennessee. This 582-mile slab of pavement includes 11 miles of what has become an American classic highway known worldwide as The Tail of the Dragon.

Things to check out: 1. Cheoah Dam were featured in “The Fugitive,” and parts of the gearhead classic. 2. Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort in Robbinsville, NC is the perfect place to snap pictures, grab souvenirs, eat lunch, have a cold beer, or even spend the night. 3. Tail of the Dragon Store across the street for more great souvenirs, and your obligatory photo with the giant eponymous Dragon sculpture. 4. Calderwood Overlook. This beautiful scenic overlook just off the Tail of the Dragon offers a gorgeous view of the Cheoah Dam. Little Known Facts About US 129: 1. May 31, 2003 Eric Rudolph on the Ten Most Wanted List of the FBI was arrested in Murphy, North Carolina just off US129. He had been a suspect in the Atlanta Olympic bombing since 1998 and had been in hiding at various places along US129 the entire time. 2. US129 crossing from Tennessee into North Carolina

was originally promoted as the most direct route from Chicago to Florida. 3. There were plans at one time to have US129 run from New York to Pensacola, Florida. 4. US129 from Jasper to Old Town Florida is designated "Stephen Foster Highway". 5. US129 waged an advertising battle with US41 for tourism. 6. One of the largest searches in the Smokies brought attention to US129 in June of 1951. A 21-year old nurse was lost while hiking and bloodhounds traced her path to US129 near Calderwood. She was found two weeks later in the woods in good condition having survived with no food or equipment. 7. In the 1970s a local heavy equipment company in Robbinsville (P&J) would send new semi-truck drivers across the Dragon and back to see if they could handle the big rigs on the curves.

A few minor details can help your social media accounts shine a light on your business. A complete profile allows potential customers to find out what they need to know about your business. Can they shop through your online store at 5:00 am? What time does your physical location open? How can customers contact you if they have a question or concern? A Few Things To Remember When You Start Your Business

Being a single gal with several single female friends, obviously a large part of our lives revolves around dating. We spend a lot time discussing the men we see, be it the good, the bad or the ugly… and trust me, we’re seeing it all. I would say that at least 65% of these conversations consist only of deciphering the male mind and trying to understand why they do the things they do. The fact that women even spend hours of their lives this way is probably the biggest difference between the sexes and best example for my point; women are naturally deeper thinkers who analyze the past, present and future of their relationships, while men typically only exist in the here and now. Quite frankly, it’s time we ladies began thinking like a man, because the female brain is exhausting.

brain is constantly firing on all cylinders instead of focusing on the actual task at hand, which is simply fulfilling our hunger. We don’t do it on purpose; we do it internally when we’re alone and we do it with our girlfriends. It would be to our benefit if we could more easily identify what we actually want and just verbalize it like our male counterparts, and that extends far beyond something as trivial as food. There’s no debate that women are paid far less in the workforce than men, and I wonder sometimes how much of that has to do with the fact that men aren’t afraid to ask for a raise or negotiate more money up front, while we’re over here “not wanting to cause a scene” by speaking up. And even with relationships, women will stew on things, letting them build up over time until they’re boiling over and they flip out about a litany of One area of improvement where men grievances that started because you are leading over women, is that they forgot to put the toilet lid down. I just say outright what they want. I’m don’t know why women aren’t more speaking in general terms here, but proactive in addressing something for the most part men don’t play the that is bothering them while it’s communication games that women happening in an effort to immediately do, whether women are doing it correct the behavior and save major consciously or subconsciously. headaches down the road. For example, the unending food Along the same lines of men saying conundrum. Ask any man what he wants to eat and you’ll typically get a what they want, you also have to take one word answer – “Pizza.” “Burgers.” their words at face value whether it’s what you want to hear or not. In “Applebees.” Or they’ll say “I don’t care” and they’ll actually mean it. Ask the same way a man will tell you exactly what he wants to eat and a woman that however and you’re you should believe him, you must opening Pandora’s Box. “I dunno… what are you thinking? I kind of want believe he means everything else, sometimes regardless of his actions. Asian food but not like Thai but not Many women end up in dead end, Chinese either. But I just ate Indian months-long “situationships” where food last week. Didn’t you and your ex go to that Asian restaurant all the their feelings get hurt because they didn’t believe the guy who said he time? Wow. Looks like all you can didn’t want a relationship. These do is think about her.” The female men will tell you that repeatedly, all the while they’re spending their nights at your home, taking you on dates and giving every sign that this is in fact a real relationship. Women

will tell themselves “he’s just scared of commitment,” or “he’s coming around” and in their mind they’re in a full-blown partnership. Then one day the guy will hook up with someone else, go on another date, or decide to move across the country without telling you and all you’ll get as a parting gift is “I told you I didn’t want a relationship.” Does that mean you have to just accept this kind of behavior as par for the course? Absolutely not! This is where women need to enforce that “man-think” and verbalize what they want equally. If you actually do want a relationship, say that up front. If something big is a deal-breaker like wanting children, put that out there. However, you have to be willing to walk away if they’re not sharing the same mindset, which is why it’s so important to really know exactly what you want and express it sooner than better. You will save yourself so much future heartache, because many women falsely believe men will change and I promise you this with everything I know to be true beyond doubt- you can NOT change a grown man. And the more you compromise your own needs and wants, or the more times you let them lie to you, the more they will lose respect for your boundaries and continue to test them. A liar will always lie, cheaters will continue to cheat, a man nearing 50 who says he doesn’t want any more children isn’t going to change his mind; don’t be the doormat who looks stupid in the end when you have the option to set boundaries for what you want up front and allow them to decide if they want to stay on board. As backward as it sounds, (because it’s scientifically proven men physically speak much less than women on a daily basis) us ladies have to be better communicators. More specifically, we need to learn to

be more direct and proactive about what we want. If a man asks you “what’s wrong,” don’t do the girl thing and say “nothing” because you’re really wanting him to coax it out of you or you feel like he should already know. Become so secure in yourself that you know exactly what you want and you’re ok with walking away from people who don’t align with that. And stop attaching make-believe messages to spoken words- believe people when they tell you who they are or what they want. If they’re being confusing with their actions, ask for clarification, then walk away. Those people are getting something from you while you’re draining yourself for them. It’s time for us to admit that for once, men might actually be right about something and adopt this to-thepoint mindset!

Ladies and Gentlemen Elvis may have left the building but has entered your local cinema. The King of Rock and Roll is the subject of the new Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge!", "The Great Gatsby") directed film "Elvis." The film is told from the perspective of his longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks), and features Austin Butler in the title role. The film begins in 1997 when Parker is on his deathbed and begins to look back on his time with Elvis and how he met the singer he would form into an American icon. The film shows the poverty ridden childhood of Elvis, and how attending an African American tent revival along with watching a blues style guitar player formed his early fascination with music in the style found on Beale Street in Memphis. When Elvis and his parents Vernon (Richard Roxburgh) and Gladys (Helen Thompson) moved from Mississippi to Memphis, Elvis made a record for Sun Records and when the song was heard by Parker, the so called modern-day PT Barnum, realized Elvis could finally be his ticket to real fame and fortune. Parker was managing country singer Hank Snow at the time and soon had Elvis on the Hank Snow tour. Elvis became so popular on the tour, Parker convinced the singer he could make him a mega star as the two left Snow and the tour behind. At this point Elvis

really begins to take off nationally, but even though he is a hit with teenagers, he has incurred the wrath of parents, who feel he is trying to corrupt their kids, and some racist politicians who attack him for his involvement with black musicians. Events turn so bad, the newly minted star could even face jail time in the name of "decency." The story implies Parker had some influence of having Elvis drafted into the US Army as a way to avoid further legal issues. While in the Army two life changing events happen to the star: his mom dies from alcoholism, and he meets his future wife Priscilla Beaulieu (Olivia DeJonge). After he is discharged from the Army, he resumes his career-making tours and begins making films in Hollywood. Through the 1960's Elvis is heartbroken by the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy and wants to reflect the state of society in his music, but Parker insists the star continue with non-contorversial tunes. With his movies becoming more repetitive and making less money at the box office, his career begins to tank, and ways must be found to make Elvis uber popular once more. Elvis was able to film an amazing television special in 1968 that was intended to be a Christmas special but had no holiday tunes at all. Despite the lack of Christmas tunes, the show was a huge rating success, and Elvis was back. Eventually Parker convinces Elvis to take up residency at a new hotel in Las Vegas (something artists do today with regularity), where he ends up performing for many years despite his desire to tour the world. During this time he also filmed a special from Hawaii that was beamed across the world via satellite and today can be seen on YouTube. I recommend a watch of this outstanding concert. The film also covers the birth of Lisa Marie, the divorce of Elvis and Priscilla, and the singers continued dependence on various drugs thanks to Parker and a doctor who apparently could be bought. The addictions of Elvis eventually

killed him at the age of 42, and it's tragic he never seeked the help Priscilla so desperately wanted him to get. The performances in this film are amazing, with Hanks expertly playing the manager who really mismanaged the star, and kept many secrets from him. Parker insists he was not responsible for the death of Elivs, but the star's love of his public was the cause. Take that as you will. As for Butler in the role of the icon, I was blown away by his performance, and if he is not nominated for an Oscar there is no justice in Hollywood. Butler, in a star making performance, is utterly amazing. The film is also Oscar worthy, and the unique touches of

director Luhrmann are all over the screen. This film made me laugh, tap my feet, cry, and have a newfound appreciation of the King of Rock and Roll. This film takes an iconic star, who unfortunately at times during his career was not taken seriously, makes him human, and reveals just how talented and groundbreaking he was. "Elvis" is a must see movie. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13)

The Criterion Collection added two movies to their lineup this month. One is a classic David Lean film from 1955 they’ve released before on Laserdisc and DVD, and the other is one of the best modern film noirs that’s new to the collection, and part of their new series of 4K Ultra HD releases. That film is director Carl Franklin’s highly underappreciated “Devil in a Blue Dress” from 1995.

1995’s “Devil in a Blue Dress” stars Denzel Washington and an early in his career Don Cheadle. Based on Walter Mosley’s novel of the same name, Washington stars as Easy Rawlins. Rawlins is an ex-GI living in post world war two Los Angeles. Rawlins is looking for work and soon is recruited to find a missing lover of a candidate running for mayor.

Shot on location in Rome in Technicolor, the film is a beautiful and romantic movie. Touching, and also absolutely dazzling to the eyes. What begins as a way to make a quick buck soon has Rawlings becoming a private detective as he gets caught up in a deep web of murder, scandal, and political intrigue. “Devil in a Blue Dress” is one of the best modern noirs I have ever seen. Carl Franklin has crafted a great movie that plays with and subverts the tropes of classic noir, while also bringing into the light the realities of African American life

during the post-war era, but also has lingered on for far too long to the present. Restored from the original 35mm camera negative and presented in 4K UHD, “Devil in a Blue Dress” is a jaw-dropping experience. The colors, the depth, and the detail all absolutely wow, giving an extremely film-like look to the presentation. The audio is a DTS-HD 5.1 track taken from the original six-channel magnetic masters. Bonus features and plentiful and well done, featuring the good commentary track that Franklin recorded for the film’s DVD release in 1998.

New extras include a conversation between Franklin and actor Cheadle, a conversation between author Mosley and screenwriter Attica Locke, plus an onstage chat between noir expert Eddie Muller and Franklin from the 2018 Noir City Film Festival. This is a great movie that deserves more attention, it’s another must-own. As usual, Criterion has knocked it out of the park with a pair of releases that stun and are a worthy addition to any home film library. Both are very much worth your time and I hope you’ll check them out soon. I’ll see you next week.
