NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Friends!

10 Tri-Cities Faces and Places

Kathie Scalf

Back to school time! Wow the summer really flew by so fast. I hope all of the kids are ready for a great year. Keep this in mind during your morning afternoon commutes since there will be little ones out more. I know that our school system has gone from having free lunch for everyone to an increased price. This will make it harder for families with multiple kids. I have been online researching how to make healthy and fun lunches. Remember to send your kids to school with their water bottles since the weather is still hot. Please remember to contact us if we can help you with advertising. As always we appreciate your continued support!

Hello everyone, hope your summer is all you hoped it would be. Please be safe, watch out for others and as always keep your knees in the breeze. This week I have picked out a ride that will take you into Virginia. This ride is great on a motorcycle or in a vehicle. Highlands Parkway in Damascus is about a 5 hour ride on route 58. Route 58 actually begins in Portsmouth near the shore and stretches to the western border of Virginia. Portsmouth, Virginia's historic seaport, is a Coastal Virginia treasure with its collection of antique homes spanning three centuries, its assortment of quirky shops and eclectic, locally owned restaurants, and a spectacular waterfront along the busy Hampton Roads harbor. It’s an ancient seaport with a decidedly hip vibe. The smallest of the coastal cities, Portsmouth is known for providing legendary hospitality since 1752. The most scenic portion in the fall months begins around Meadows of Dan. Meadows of Dan is an unincorporated community in Patrick County, Virginia, where the Blue Ridge Parkway crosses U.S. Route 58 (Jeb Stuart Highway).

Beanz Biker Corner By Anne Hartley 423-297-5675

There are numerous country shops, classic houses, and restaurants in the community. It is located near the Patrick/Floyd County line about 20 miles east of Hillsville and about 14 miles northwest of Stuart, Virginia. The community's name is credited to one of its earliest English settlers, James Steptoe Langhorne, and comes from the meadows that abound near the Dan River which flows through the area Take the road west and you’ll find dozens of quaint small towns like Galax and Damascus that welcome visitors with an air of friendliness that is both rare and refreshing. Galax is the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The City is rich with tradition, shopping, recreation and scenic beauty. A visit to Galax offers everything from quaint downtown shops to hiking and Old Time Bluegrass Music festivals. It is also home to the largest Old Time Bluegrass Fiddler's Convention as well as the New River Trail. Damascus is the home of the annual Trail Days festival and is known as Trail Town USA due to the convergence of four scenic trails in the town, including the Appalachian Trail, U.S. Bicycle Route 76, The Iron Mountain Trail, and the Virginia Creeper Trail. The Trail Days festival is held around the middle of May each year and draws in excess of 20,000 tourists, making it the largest single gathering of Appalachian Trail hikers anywhere. The Appalachian Trail runs right through the town of Damascus, and you’ll often spot a handful of scruffy hikers sharing their stories with the residents, who are more than happy to provide supplies and support for the weary travelers. As you continue your trek along the western road, you’ll eventually reach Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, which traces the borders of Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. For an unforgettable scenic view, hike to the top of Pinnacle Overlook. Cumberland Gap the first great gateway to the west, is a mountain pass that was used

116 Buffalo Street Johnson City, TN • www.bikerweartn.com • (423) 631-0542 by wildlife, Native Indian tribes, and later by settlers moving west. Daniel Boone was hired to blaze a trail beginning in Southwest Virginia through Cumberland Gap known as the Wilderness Road. It became the route westward for pioneers who travelled west through the mountains into the wilderness of Kentucky. Both the North and the South vied for control of the Cumberland Gap during the Civil war. Today the park consists of approximately 20,000 acres and 70 miles of hiking trails. There are numerous scenic and

While the dog days of summer are my absolute least favorite time of year, there’s no denying it’s one of the best seasons for delicious food. One of the highlights of my week is my Saturday morning stroll through the farmer’s market and right now is high time for the freshest produce and other farmed goods. Last week, inspired by the rainbow of local fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses and herbs, I built a positively outstanding meal that was worthy of no less than 5 Michelin stars, and the good news is, it was quick, simple and I’m here to share it with you! So get your reusable grocery bags and walking shoes ready, because you’re going to be chomping at the bits to be first in line for the market this weekend.

bottom of my salad plate. I sprinkled a handful of arugula over top; the peppery spice of this leafy green plays nicely with the acidic lemon notes in the ricotta and the sweetness of the tomatoes. Then I chopped a blend of heirloom tomatoes of all sizes and colors to about 1” pieces, tossed them on top of the arugula and sprinkled with fresh basil I snipped from my patio herb garden. I used whole leaves, but it would also be nice to chiffon them and sprinkle like confetti if you want a less intense flavor. Finally I added my pickled onions and drizzled with a vinaigrette I had on hand and voila! Salad is served!

dashes of balsamic vinegar. I stuck them back under the broiler for just a minute so the honey caramelized and the outsides of the sprouts got a little crispy, but keep an eye on this because they can go from crispy to torched very quickly. Using the same ricotta from early, I made a nice little bed for my carrots to lie on, drizzling the cheese with a bit of hone before spreading the spears across the top. The sprouts were placed to the side and finally my chicken was ready for a trip to the grill.

Chicken thighs are much smaller than breasts and depending on how hot you get the grill, they should be done For the main course I had grilled in about 10-12 minutes. I let mine go chicken thighs with carrots and 5 minutes on each side, then gave Brussel sprouts, but really jazzed it up. When it comes to actor Woody Harrelson I have always had mixed emotions about his films. To me he is an adequate actor providing pleasant diversions in his roles. Mr. adequate has returned in the new film "The Man from Toronto" where he stars alongside firecracker actor Kevin Hart. The two actors are extremes, one very hyper and the other laid back, which actually works in the film. The film begins a bit slow, but eventually improves. The story introduces the character of Teddy (Hart) a man who has attempted to start an internet athletic page, but has failed miserably. Teddy even attempts to sell his idea of "non-contact boxing" to a local gym owner, but his idea is rejected. Despite his failed efforts, Teddy manages to plan a nice birthday gift for his wife, a visit to a day spa, and while she is there he travels to a secluded cabin to prepare her next birthday surprise but due to a glitch winds up at the wrong cabin where those inside are waiting for the arrival of The Man From Tronto (Harrelson), an expert assassin. The men inside the cabin mistake Teddy

for the assassin, and expect him to interrogate the man they are holding hostage. Despite his shock, Teddy is able to extract information from the prisoner, but just after the reveal the FBI raids the cabin. The FBI informs Teddy they want him to continue to assume the identity of TMFT in order to help them catch exiled Venezuelan Colonel Marin Hoyos, who is in Washington, DC planning an assination of the President of Venezuela. As the plan unfolds, Teddy eventually meets TMFT, whose real name is Randy, and after fighting at first, they form an uneasy alliance. After Randy reaches out to his handler, played by Ellen Barkin, he decides to continue the charade of Teddy impersonating him. The duo travel to Puerto Rico for an assignment, where after successfully completing yet another interrogation, encounter yet another assin, this one The Man From Miami (Pierson Fode), who attempts to steal an item from the duo that will lead to the killing of the President of Venezuela. After fighting off TMFM, the duo travel to D.C. where they meet up with Teddy's wife, and eventually encounter other assassins sent to get the item needed for the assination. Randy and Teddy have a no-holes-barred fight with the other assassins, but eventually they manage to thwart all of them. Meanwhile, Teddy's wife is leaving him out of disappointment, and he must race to keep her from going home to her mother. The film ends with the duo managing to thwart the assination attempt, and successfully defeating the other assassins and their handler. At the conclusion the story moves forward one year, with Rany in a new profession,

and Teddy and his wife Lori (Jasmine Mathews) expecting a child. This film is described as an action/comedy, but I felt the action was stronger than the comedy, which is often tepid. I'm not sure when Hollywood decided Kevin Hart "yelling" and in panic mode was humorous. There are a few chuckles in the film, but not enough for my tastes. The lead actors do the best

with the material they have, and are well cast as polar opposites. "The Man from Toronto" is a pleasant diversion of a film, but is the tale of a hitman who doesn't quite hit the mark. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated PG-13)

When Summer was on the horizon there was one thing I had in mind. I wanted to have a good one, one that felt like the fun, busy, carefree ones of my youth. I suppose that’s a feeling we’re always trying to chase, but having spent the better part of the last two years living as something of a shut-in (hypochondriacs represent!), I wanted to get out and enjoy life a little. It helped that June was kicking off with the first non-work-related weekend trip I’ve had in years. A fun and most pleasant weekend in Asheville to attend a friend’s wedding. Sure, I could have done it as just a day trip, but I deserved a weekend getaway. That was the only thing I had planned for my Summer of George. What other fun things would happen? I wasn’t sure. I knew I wanted to get some pool time in at some point, I know enough people with pools where that seemed like a good plausibility. Indeed it was. Just about a month after my weekend away, I was asked to do a one-day house sit for a friend who has a pool. That day was glorious. I spent almost three hours floating around in the pool, listening to music, and generally living my best Summer life. You recall how I mentioned my goal for the Summer was to have one

that felt reminiscent of my youth? The days when I was part of the last generation to be truly feral? I got my wish as waking up the next day after my truly wonderful pool day I found I had a massive sunburn over most of my upper back. Now, I’m no fool, I harbor the advice of sunscreen and had some which I applied twice during that day of fulfilling leisure. What was funny was that you could see where this was on one part of my back that, regardless of how hard I tried, I wasn’t able to cover with sunscreen. Near my upper right shoulder, there was a perfectly un-burned outline of my hand, where I had managed to slap the SPF 30. It looked like something out of a cartoon. As I stood there glaring at this giant red spot on my back in the mirror, I was trying to remember what all you do for a sunburn. Drawing a blank on how to take care of a sunburn, it dawned on me that I don’t think I’ve had a sunburn in over 20 years. As in, I don’t think I’ve had one since I was a kid, as in since the ‘90s. My dream of having a Summer much like the ones of those happy days of yore had come true in ways I didn’t think of. I had to google what to do for a sunburn and none of the immediate remedies were on hand. A quick trip to the corner drug store and I soon found myself with a good-sized bottle of aloe vera gel. The second problem presented itself in how the heck I was going to apply this to a spot on my back I couldn’t get sunscreen on. I thought about using a towel, but that seemed like a bad idea as it would just absorb most of the gel. I decided to try the wall of my shower. I placed a good splash of gel all over part of the wall where I thought my back would manage the best, then I rubbed my back all over the wall. It worked OK, but most of the gel stayed on the shower wall instead of going on my back. Determined, I wiped the gel off the wall with a towel while trying to think of another solution. I went to the kitchen to get a

spatula, the kind you’d use to mix a cake batter with. I put the gel all on one side of the spatula and began to rub it all over my back. This worked, and with alternating hands I was able to cover all of the areas with Aloe Vera, bringing the much-needed relief I was seeking. I knew I wanted a Summer that made me feel like I was a kid again, but I didn’t think that would include

burning my entire upper back. The other thing I do miss is that Summer felt like it lasted a long time, now here we are with school starting back up and I wonder where the heck the summer went? It seems it went by in a flash. Time does get faster as one gets older. Hopefully, if you’ve also been burned by the sun you won’t need to resort to a spatula for relief. See you next week.
