August is here! Most of the kids are back in school, the days are still long and the rain has almost washed us away. There are some important in August to mention. Davey Crockett was born in Hawkins Country in 1786 and Neil Armstrong was born in 1946. Our amazing Creative Director JB celebrates his birthday on Monday. Happy Birthday JB! We could never bring this awesome paper to you every week without him. What do you have planned for August? Is anyone taking some late summer vacations? Keep sending us your pictures so we can share your fun! I hope all of the kids are enjoying their school days. Remember to stay hydrated and healthy!

Take Care, Lisa Durbin Publisher

a Hi!! My name is Aurora!! Yes, like the Princess!! I am a big dog weighing in at 145 lbs, I am a 5 yr old Harlequin Blue Merle Great Dane. I have never been around cats, so I don’t know if I like them or not. I do get along with other dogs, but small dogs make me nervous and protective of my space and I do like children although I do recommend 12 and over as I am a

giant and may knock over or scare the smaller ones. I am potty trained, and leash trained...but remember I am big so I need someone who can handle my size. I have moderate to high energy and if left to my own devices can and will counter surf !!! I have been spayed, current on vaccinations and microchipped.

Hello everyone, this past week has been a little rainy, but hope you were still able to get in some riding. Please remember when you ride after its rains or while it is raining the roads can be slippery. Please be aware of the road conditions. Stay safe and make it home to the ones who love you the most. This week I thought it would be nice to give you another ride you might enjoy. The Back of the Dragon: Tazewell County is home of the “famed” Back of the Dragon”, Virginia’s only designated motorcycle route and the premier riding road on the East Coast boosting thirty-two miles and over three hundred curves. Ideal for sports cars or motorcycles, and offers knee dragging fun, switchbacks, slaloms, hairpins, limited access, and spectacular views. The sharp zig-zagging path the road cuts through the mountain landscape, Route 16 provides 32 miles of exciting, unparalleled thrills. Spanning three mountain ranges between Tazewell and Marion, this two-lane road is bordered by magnificent scenery that reaches its peak during the fall foliage season.

Beanz Biker Corner By Anne Hartley 423-297-5675

Take your motorcycle for a ride down Route 16 to become a “Dragon Master”. Named Jeffersonville until 1892, Tazewell was developed near the headwaters of the Clinch River. It is one of the smallest towns in the United States to have once operated a streetcar. It is in a county that underwent rapid growth in population at the end of the 19th century during the period of the coal and iron boom, as resources of the Pocahontas Coalfields were exploited. Marion is a town in Smyth County, Virginia. Conveniently positioned upon Interstate 81, Marion is easily accessible. Located in the Blue Ridge portion of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia, the general Marion area is well known for its scenic beauty. The town is named for American Revolutionary War officer Francis Marion. Marion is one of a few towns to be designated as an official Virginia Main Street Community and National Main Street Community. The Lincoln Theatre, a meticulously renovated Art-Deco Mayan Revival-style performing arts center in Marion, is the home of the nationally syndicated bluegrass music program Song of the Mountains Don’t Miss: Hungry Mother State Park, the historic town of Tazewell. Long a family favorite and known for its beautiful woodlands and placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains, Hungry Mother has a sandy beach with bathhouse, boats and boat launch, universally accessible fishing pier, campgrounds, cabins, a fantastic restaurant, gift shops, a visitor center, a six-bedroom lodge that sleeps 15, and hiking and biking trails. Hungry Mother is also home to the Hemlock Haven Conference Center, which is perfect for retreats, conferences, and special events.

While the dog days of summer are my absolute least favorite time of year, there’s no denying it’s one of the best seasons for delicious food. One of the highlights of my week is my Saturday morning stroll through the farmer’s market and right now is high time for the freshest produce and other farmed goods. Last week, inspired by the rainbow of local fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses and herbs, I built a positively outstanding meal that was worthy of no less than 5 Michelin stars, and the good news is, it was quick, simple and I’m here to share it with you! So get your reusable grocery bags and walking shoes ready, because you’re going to be chomping at the bits to be first in line for the market this weekend.

bottom of my salad plate. I sprinkled a handful of arugula over top; the peppery spice of this leafy green plays nicely with the acidic lemon notes in the ricotta and the sweetness of the tomatoes. Then I chopped a blend of heirloom tomatoes of all sizes and colors to about 1” pieces, tossed them on top of the arugula and sprinkled with fresh basil I snipped from my patio herb garden. I used whole leaves, but it would also be nice to chiffon them and sprinkle like confetti if you want a less intense flavor. Finally I added my pickled onions and drizzled with a vinaigrette I had on hand and voila! Salad is served!

dashes of balsamic vinegar. I stuck them back under the broiler for just a minute so the honey caramelized and the outsides of the sprouts got a little crispy, but keep an eye on this because they can go from crispy to torched very quickly. Using the same ricotta from early, I made a nice little bed for my carrots to lie on, drizzling the cheese with a bit of hone before spreading the spears across the top. The sprouts were placed to the side and finally my chicken was ready for a trip to the grill.

Chicken thighs are much smaller than breasts and depending on how hot you get the grill, they should be done For the main course I had grilled in about 10-12 minutes. If you are a fan of Jason Bourne and James Bond movies then you need to check out "The Gray Man", the new action thriller starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. The film is based on a 2009 novel of the same name and tells how a prisoner (Gosling), convicted on murder, is recutired by CIA operative Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) to work in the organiztions assassin program named Sierra. Gosling's character agrees to be part of the program in order to gain his freedom and is named Sierra Six. The first mission Six is sent on takes him to Bangkok where he is to assassinate a man suspected of selling national security secrets. The mission goes south when Six has to attack the target directly due to many civilians being in his way. When Six and his target fight, the target reveals he is also part of the Sierra program, and gives him an encrypted drive containing evidence against some members of the CIA. When Six contacts Center Chief and head of the Sierra operation Denny Carmichael (Rege-Jean Page), he brushes off Six. Suspicious of Carmichael's reaction, Six sends the drive to the home of retired handler Margaret Cahill (Alfre Woodard), who now lives in Prague. Six contacts Fitzroy in order to be extracted from the mission, but the extraction hits

a snag after Fitzroy's niece Claire (Julia Butters) is kidnapped by former CIA agent Lloyd Hansen (Evans) in order to force Six to hand over the drive. Hansen was kicked out of the CIA due to his sociopathic tendencies, so he is not dealing with the most stable man to deal with. Hansen forces Fitzroy to put out a hit notice on Six in order to save his life and that of his niece, who are being held in a mansion in Croatia. Meanwhile, Six is ordered to Vienna to receive documents, where he is betrayed by his contact, but is rescued and taken captive by CIA field agent Dani Miranda (And de Armas), who is trying to repair her reputation with the organization after mishandling Six's mission in Bangkok. While they are together, Six convinces Miranda the contents of the drive show Carmichael to be corrupt due to abusing his position in the CIA for his own purposes. After the two visit Cahill's home, an attack on them is thwarted, and the two escape and are on the run. However, a mercenary named Lone Wolf (Dhanush) manages to steal the drive from the fleeing duo and deliver it to Hansen. The aforementioned action set the stage for a visit to the mansion in Croatia in order to save Fitzroy and Claire and retrieve the drive. As if the action up to this point hasn't already been fast and furious (sorry!), it really kicks into overdrive when Six and Miranda take on Hansen and his crew at the mansion. As with any good story the good guys win, but I will not say how or what becomes of the characters, other than to say they get the ending each of the desirves. The ending does set up a possible sequel, and I would love to see more films featuring Gosling as Six. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo ("Avengers: End Game") keep the action popping, and there is rarely time to catch your breath, which I loved. The actors are all wonderful in their respective roles, and Gosling is a perfect action

star, even though he is playing the role of Ken in the now filming live-action "Barbie" movie. In this film he is even once referred to as a "Ken doll" (hint hint lol). As for Evans, the former Captain America, is equally adept at playing a villian, and his character is one you will love to hate. The only issue I have with Evans is he was competing for attention with his mustache. While it certainly added to the annoyance of his character, he needs never

to sport one in real life without a beard. "The Gray Man" is a fun action thriller, featuring a combination of great acting, exciting chases, exotic locations, creative camera angles, and surprising plot twists. I highly recommend this film to fans of the action genre. Now playing on Netflix and in limited theaters. (Rated PG-13)

You may recall that a few weeks ago I talked about the difficulties I had related to moving in a new TV I bought. Getting the thing into my house was only the first part of what was a long process. For most people—IE: Normal people—that would be all there is to it. Getting the TV in the house, out of the box, plugged up, turned on, done! But I, you see, I am not normal people.

and micro-adjustments you can do the fancy new TV. I had stated weeks ago that I was going from a 2006 model to a 2022 model. To say there’s been a leap in TV technology is an understatement. For the first time in my life, I felt a bit overwhelmed and a little confused by all the TV could do.

There are no less than five different picture settings for movies, I’m very particular when it comes all varying from very good to to, well, a lot of things. I’m almost perfect. Then in each of especially particular when it comes those settings, there are microto picture settings on my TV. I hate adjustments you can make. There motion smoothing when it comes are all the regular viewing modes to movies. I want my movies too. One that is just standard, one to look like a movie and not an for sports, one for video games, episode of “The Young and the and one that is close to expert Restless.” I’ve heard the arguments calibration settings. Sports is a from all those who like this effect, rather ugly-looking mode though, full of that motion smoothing that but I can’t do it. It’s like a knife in makes it look a bit too artificial. my brain. Everything looks wrong and it feels like a puzzle I There are even settings that do can’t solve. both video and audio tweaks. There’s one called “plasticine” I knew that motion smoothing which makes everyone look like was the first thing I would turn they’ve just been to a cosmetic off on my new, fancy TV. Yet, I wasn’t prepared for just how many surgeon in Beverly Hills and adds a slight valley accent to everyone’s different picture modes, settings, voices. There’s a mode for the youngest watchers called “Baby Melvin” which translates all the audio into “goo goo, ga ga” noises so that at last your three-monthold can finally watch “Chopped.”

I stuck with a setting called “filmmaker mode” for movies then used that calibrated mode thing for regular TV watching. This was followed by micro-adjusting. Taking off some extra little enhancements that I didn’t want on and making sure all the motion smoothing was off. Things that 80% of people wouldn’t notice or fool with, but here I was dedicating hours of my day to getting it just right. Thus began my journey of madness. The pursuit of

perfection, the desire to try out everything to dial in the TV to my painfully exacting standards. These all teamed up to produce a solid week and a half of me adjusting, watching a scene from “Jurassic Park,” adjusting again, watching the same scene, then repeating the cycle. I did this for hours a few days. I had read so many online guides to setting up my TV, and watching videos on YouTube about what settings to have on and or off for movies. I soon began to feel that I was driving myself crazy. I was playing “Gaslight: The Home Game.” I was in my own personal, Edgar Allen Poe descent to madness, but instead of a beating heart under the floor it was “Do you want cinema screen on or off?” I began to seem crazed, I locked myself in my basement and did

nothing but watch “Jurassic Park” in every movie setting I could try out. Writing notes, drinking nothing but tropical punch Kool-Aid and eating raw oats for protein. My non-existent wife, Sheila, came down to check on me. I just turned to her and yelled “The colors, Duke! The colors!” That’s when she held my hand, took me upstairs, gave me tepid broth, and nursed me out of my state of televisual madness. Now I’m happy with where the TV sits. I’ve got it all dialed in just right and it’s producing an amazing-looking picture with great color. Still, sometimes I wonder if I just gave the gamma one more little tweak. No. No, I’m happy with it. It’s all good. Anyways, I have to go. It’s time for my tepid broth. See you next week.
