The Appalachian Fair is coming! They have a great entertainment lineup this year and some really good specials for the rides. There is just something about walking around the fairgrounds while eating cotton candy or a funnel cake. I hope your family will be able to enjoy it at least one evening. I plan to see Walker Hayes while the kids enjoy the rides and we will attend the Demolition Derby as a family. If you attend don’t forget to snap some pictures for The Loafer! We would like to welcome some of our newest businesses advertising with us. If you need legal help please find the ad for Erin McArdle. She is located in Johnson City. If the kids or animals have tracked in dirt on your carpet all summer, it would be a great time to call the King of Steam to clean it at a great price! The Appalachian Fair Returns August 22-27, 2022

The excitement is building in Gray for the upcoming Appalachian Fair! 2022 dates are from August 22-27. In our 96th year, the Appalachian Fair is one of the longest-running fairs in the country and has established itself as the second largest fair in Tennessee. Two of our more popular attractions here at the fair are the Barnyard Nursery & the Tennessee Wildlife Exhibit, where fairgoers can see ‘live’ animals. Everything from donkeys to ducks, fish to turtles, and wild animals in their natural habitat. Our Museum Building has evolved into a wonderful learning and ‘remembering’ tool for our fairgoers. Be sure to make time to visit the ‘country store’ and watch the many artisans working in the Museum. The fair will be awarding both ribbons and premiums all week to exhibitors of sheep, beef, and dairy cattle in the Livestock Barns. The Farm & Home Building located in the middle of the fairgrounds is home to competitive exhibits involving culinary competitions, canned goods, field crops, needlework, and photography, just to name a few. Youth competitions are coordinated through 4-H, FFA, FCCLA, and CTE groups throughout the Appalachian competing for ribbons, prize money and Appalachianscholarships!FairPresident

They love to run When Meow Meow first entered the rescue, we were SO worried about him. For several weeks he was extremely scared (he would relax for moments when we were rubbing his chin) and was eating so little that he lost 2 pounds! It took numerous weeks, some vet visits and medication but look at him now! Hello everyone, hope you and your family are doing well. Please continue to ride safe and watch out for the cage, deer, bear, dogs, cats, and grass. A lot of folks have gone down this year due to these factors. Keep your eyes open and your knees in the breeze. This week I am going to write about Big Boy Pop Ups and the good they do in our communities. Two years I was looking for a new food vendor for our Bike Rally. I called Daniel Wilson and he gave me a list of vendors. He said they were all good but Big Boy Pop Ups was one of the best. So, I called TJ the owner and invited him to cook at 7th Annual Snake Pit Bike Rally. When Big Boy Pop Ups arrived a 350-pound, 6-foot 2 inches, black man stepped out of his truck. It didn’t take me long to figure out this was my brother from another mother. I even learned he hears better out of his right ear; he doesn’t seem to hear anything in his left ear. TJ and his entire team are and always will be the only food vendor for us. By the time the rally ended everybody told me that was the only food vendor I would ever need at the rally. The Big Boys team fit right in and were so helpful and the food was off the chain. Since then, TJ and his team have become not just friends but family. Now for a little history about Big Boys Pop Ups. TJ being a BIG BOY WHO LOVES TO EAT (350lbs) Had a passion for cooking great food so in 2019 he started Big Boy Pop Ups with nothing more than a kitchen stove, a small grill, a vision, strong family ties and friends cheering him on. But at the same time, he knew he wanted to always give back to the Sincecommunity.theearlydays of this outstanding food vendor, Big Boys has grown by leaps and bounds. They can set up big dining tents, large smokers, huge grill and cook on site at any event no matter how small or how big these folks can handle anything you throw at them. They make some of the BEST tacos on the planet, BBQ, Fish, Turkey, Slaw, Mac & cheese, Beans and so much more. They can do Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. A Social Media Challenge SentimentsSocial By Wendy @outlook.comsocialsentimentsHayden socialsentiments.net 202216,August|theloafer.net 17

Take a day off from social media today. The world has so many interesting things to offer. When was the last time you explored your local park? When was the last time you visited a friend? Connections with people on social media who are outside of your area are needed, but we've lost touch with the outside world. We network with people all over the world throughout the day, but we have lost touch with the people right outside our front door. Technology has caused us to grow apart from our community and has reduced our social skills. We have a responsibility to create lives that balance technology with the world around us. Explore the world in person, not just through Google Maps. Go to a concert without taking pictures or video. Spend time with the people you love without looking at your phone. Create a life worthy of posting on social media when the timing is right. Take time to literally stop and smell the roses. Connect with your surroundings. Take 24 hours away from your phone. You'll be amazed at how refreshed and recharged you'll feel.

This morning I awoke to my usual “wake up and face the grind” rituals. After I took each dog downstairs separately for their walks and while my coffee (aka the nectar of life) was brewing, I shuffled out to the balcony to water my plants. Through my bleary, 6:45am eyes, I watched myself pouring pitcher upon pitcher of water onto the scraggly, sundried foliage still clinging to life in the window box on the railing. As the water flowed into the planter and directly out the bottom, the barren soil unable to retain moisture at this point, a simple thought occurred to me… this is a real waste of my time. And worse, it’s become a metaphor for a lot of things in my life. As a creature of habit who thrives on routine, I easily fall into a rhythm of ritual; I find comfort in daily, mundane tasks. Having experienced so much chaos and change over the last 4 years, there’s a sort of peace found in the consistency of simple responsibilities others might find annoying- things like dog walking, washing the dishes, watering plants, laundry, etc. For me, it signifies stability. But the tendency to live in comfort zones due to fear of change can be unhealthy and is quite unproductive. People like myself with Type A tendencies form these habits to create a sense of control, and if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that you cannot control life; the best laid plans can and will go awry. Things change and at a certain point it doesn’t matter how much water or miracle grow you’re throwing on your flowers, they’ve run their course and it’s time to change them for a new season. Like my window boxes, some old things that were planted in my life during a previous season need to be dug up and replaced with something a bit more resilient to the changing elements. I’ve changed a lot this year, more so than any time previously in my life. Quite frankly there are days I look in the mirror and truly feel like I’m looking at a stranger. I feel an odd disassociation to myself in a way that is very concerning; it’s like living in a dorm with someone from a different country who speaks a different language. Previously I would have random days where I woke up in a great mood, blasting my music and singing along on the way to my job, and I could not tell you the last time I’ve experienced that. Every day feels like just waking up and going through the motions feeling nothing-it’s not good, it’s not bad, and somehow that’s more disconcerting than waking up in an unexplained foul mood. My once-active social life has dwindled down to nothing but work, my friend group consists of 3 people who are always busy, my love life revolves on the same cycle of app boredom to disappointment so repeatedly that I can calculate exactly how long it’s going to last before we’ve ordered cocktails… there’s nothing of substance in my life right now. These mundane habits I’ve created in an effort to comfort the chaos have made me more uncomfortable than I’ve ever been, and I keep watering them even though they’ve served their purpose, died and need to be replaced.

I’m existing in a bizarre age at the moment, not just culturally but also this stage of my life. I’ll be 37 years old in a couple months and at this point there aren’t many people to connect with. All the women my age have children and families and due to those circumstances their lives look very different from mine. This leaves the only available people to hang out with being younger than me, who have not yet hit midlife and have a very different life experience that is centered around the superficiality of social media, or older divorced women who have grown children not much younger than myself and have a tendency to mother me rather than view me as a peer. While I no longer have the desire to be elbowed by belligerent drunks until 4am downtown, I also don’t want to spend every evening home in bed by 8pm watching the news. In the words of Kathy Bates in ‘Fried Green Tomatoes,’ “I’m too young to be old and too old to be young.” It sucks! I desperately need something to ignite a fire in me. These old dried up plants of work and internet dating need to be replaced with passions and philanthropy. Part of the reason I used to be so social was because I spent much of my time serving on charity boards, but due to my 2019 move to a new city then Covid, I’m at a total loss where to get involved. I also had built a great friend group that went to the same hot yoga studio several times a week. Group fitness has always been a healthy way for me to build social connections but unfortunately it’s so expensive where I live I can’t justify paying for a membership, especially considering I have a gym in my neighborhood clubhouse that is already worked into my rent. However, even as I write this I can recognize I’m making excuses to stay in my comfort zone and if improving my life is truly important to me I will find a way to make it happen. If you’re feeling a bit like me, maybe it’s time to refresh your patio. Put down some fresh dirt, plant some fall-hardy flowers and whisk away the cobwebs in the corners-both literally and figuratively. In spite of your best efforts, you can’t keep pouring your energy into things that are dead. I’m no longer the person I was; it’s time to stop doing the same crap, hoping it’s going to revive a past version of myself that I miss and am probably remembering much more fondly than she actually was. The beautiful thing is that I’m still growing into who I can be- a much more resilient plant who has weathered the sun and storms and still blooms. Kind of like a cactus.

TV character Fred Sanford used to say. Johnson and Jarvis have wonderful chemistry, and at times Jarvis appears as if he may implode at the mere site of Anne.

Persuasion

If you are a fan of the television series "Bridgerton" or "Downton Abbey" you will want to check out the new film "Persuasion" based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name. I'm sure if you have read any of the Austen novels you will be watching.

I must admit I never felt Johnson was one of the best actors ever to come out of Hollywood, but she is very effective in this film. Her character talks directly to the audience during the film, and while I found this annoying at first, I actually came to enjoy

The film is set in England, and the country never looked so beautiful as it does in this film. The story follows Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson) as she deals with her family and pines for her lost love Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), who she was persuaded not to marry seven years before, as he was of humble origins. As if her loss isn't enough, she must constantly deal with her snobby family, led by her vain, and often hilarious father Sir Walter Ellito (Richad E. Grant), her older and self absorbed sister Elizabeth (Yolanda Kettle), and her lazy and hypercondriac sister Mary (Mia McKenna-Bruce). Feeling exasperated by her family, she dreams of Frederick often, following his naval exploits from newspapers and wonders if he still longs for her despite their hurtful breakup. An opportunity presents a reunion with Fredrick after Anne is called to Mary's home to care for her "sick" sister, who claims to be on death's door, but is so lazy it takes every effort for her to walk. While she is at her sister's home, her father and older sister have left their estate due to financial problems, and have rented the home to a couple Anne finds out have a connection to Fredrick. Of course, Fredrick is coming to visit, leaving the door open for a certain awkward reunion. While Anne is excited about the prospect of seeing her former love, she is continuing to deal with her relatives and the appearance of a dashing man named Mr. Elliot (Henry Godling), who has an unexpected connection to the Elliot family. Mr. Elliot is wealthy, something most characters in these films desire, and develops an attraction for Anne, leaving her with conflicting feelings. However, the attraction between Frederick and Anne has never cooled, and the two are constantly staring at each other even though Frederick is cool toward his former love at first, confesses he wants them to be "friends" (right). Further complicating matters is the sudden attraction of one of Anne's sister-in-laws toward Frederick, who even though she wants Anne to be happy, sets her sights on the Captain. Despite all his efforts to charm Anne, Mr. Elliot fails to completely win her over, as Anne knows her only true love is Frederick. While I have never read an Austen novel, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see where the story will lead, but it is fun getting there. I really enjoyed the actors portraying the Elliot family, with Grant leading the way as Anne's narcissistic father. Mckenna-Bruce is very effective as the whiny Mary, and is so funny/annoying you want to smack her, and I wish Anne had given her one "across the lips" as the bit. It was especially effective when Anne was discussing her family with a wink and a nod. With lavish sets, beautiful scenery, witty dialogue and charismatic leads, "Persuasion" is a pleasant diversion for those who enjoy period romantic films. Now streaming on Netflix. (Rated PG)

Early Morning Coffee Panic 202216,August|theloafer.net 23

By Andy Like@gmail.comtheloaferonlineprintRossmostcivilizedhumans

I require coffee at the start of my day. When I rise from my bed you best not speak to me until I’ve had that first cup. It’s not that I’m cranky, per se, I just am not quite ready to come to terms with myself and the day until I’ve had a chance to just sit for a moment and collect my thoughts. Earlier this year when my coffee maker broke, I replaced it with a programable one. Which is really everything I didn’t know I needed. No more groggy waiting in the kitchen, full of fear that someone will try to engage in conversation with me while I wait for the coffee to be done. Now when I get out of bed, it’s there, ready. I can get my cup, sit and be alone for a while. Typically I don’t hear the coffee maker start. It’s not that it’s loud or anything, but recently I noticed that if I’m up early enough I can hear the coffee maker “announce” that it’s about to start. It’s the same sound it makes to also indicate it’s done brewing. This really confused me the first time I was up early enough to hear it. It’s a loud series of beeps that the coffee maker makes. Lying in bed listening to the beeps for the first time began an odd little journey in my brain. First, it was “Huh, I didn’t know it made a sound that it was starting.” Second, it was, “I hope that doesn’t mean something is wrong.” The third was, “I bet I forgot to do something. Did I add water? Is the pot on the warming Deepplate?”down inside I knew that all was well. Yes, I added water. Yes, the pot was on the warming plate. Yet, as I enjoy that anxious lifestyle I couldn’t help but imagine that coffee was spilling out all over my kitchen. I knew that I would get out of bed—as even for a kitchen disaster I couldn’t be bothered to get up early—walk into my kitchen and spend my entire morning mopping it multiple times. I don’t know why I assumed that my kitchen was going to be a disaster area. I don’t know why hearing a series of five beeps would make me think that all was about to cut loose. I rose from my bed and made my way toward the kitchen. I stopped off by my laundry room to grab a mop just in case. I walked into the kitchen prepared for the worse, but all was well. For some insane reason, my anxious mind created this wild idea that everything was going to be going wild. I think it is just one of those little things that always pokes at the back of your brain. A couple of days later when I was awake again early enough to hear those starting beeps, I thought again that maybe I had forgotten to do something. This is the magic of anxiety. The little feeling that you forgot something and something is going to go wrong. A feeling that exists in the back of my brain a good 90% of the time I’d say. All one can do is try to recall that in the mornings when I hear those starting beeps that everything is fine. There will be no disaster. Until the morning when it’s not fine and I DID forget to put the pot under the coffee maker. But no. Things are fine. Right? Yeah. Fine. See you next week, with a mop.
