Joe Troop is a multi-instrumentalist, singersongwriter from Winston-Salem, NC. In March 2020, amid the global pandemic, the folk singer suddenly found himself back in his home state, an ocean away from his adopted home of Buenos Aires and his Grammy-nominated band Che Apalache. So, he did what he knows best: hunkered down with his banjo and sang his heart out. After many months searching for a place to call home, Joe put down roots in Durham and a new quartet was born: Omar Ruiz-Lopez is a classically trained violinist/violist born in Panama and raised in Puerto Rico. A longtime resident of Durham, he melds his Caribbean musical heritage and noteworthy virtuosity with the Appalachian string band tradition. With a list of bonafides that includes performing alongside jazz and R&B luminaries like Branford Marsalis and Aretha Franklin, composer and percussionist Brevan Hampden has built a reputation as a technical master and sought-after Roundingcollaborator.out the quartet is Mexican American jazz bassist Ramon Garcia, hailing from Wilmington, NC. Ramon is finishing up his musical studies at UNC Greensboro’s legendary music school and demonstrates musical prowess well beyond his years.

The band recorded their first album at Audio Recorders in 1968-69 and were subsequently signed to Capitol Records in 1970. They continued recording until 1976, then reformed in 1990. The band is considered one of the tightest, musically, of its genre and has continued touring to popular acclaim. The band appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show with Bobbie Gentry and shared the stage with Jimi Hendrix and The Allman Brothers Band among others at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival. Charlie Gearheart performed on American Bandstand as Ritchie Hart in 1959. The Goose Creek Symphony has been inducted into "The Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame" class of 2011. In the '70s they fit into a country rock mode but were more esoteric than many of their contemporaries and they had a rawer, less commercial sound. The band recorded three eclectic albums for Capitol, Est 1970, 1970 Welcome to Goose Creek 1971 and Words of Earnest 1972. All were moderately successful with the last boasting a hit single cover of Janis Joplin's “Mercedes Benz.” Re-mastered version. In 1974 the band moved over to Columbia Records and recorded, to less success, Do Your Thing But Don't Touch Mine. Shortly thereafter the band took a hiatus which lasted almost 17 years. In the years since they resurfaced, they have played many festivals and released several albums, including a live set, The Goose Is Loose, in 1995, which highlights their extended jamming, witness the meandering 20 minutes or so of “Talk About Goose Creek and Other Important Places.” Also released is the Acoustic Goose live album, as well as studio albums, including Going Home 1998 and I Don't Know 2003. They have also released a couple of lost albums, such as Head for the Hills recorded in 1975-76 and released in 1997 and recently The Same Thing Again (one music CD and a bonus DVD). The latter was recorded in the mid-70s and essentially forgotten for three decades. Ironically the title cut has Gearheart singing, “If I could live my life over, I'd do the same thing again.

Every single time something major happens in the political world, social media feeds become clogged with opinions, false information, and incomplete judgments. Hostility reigns and friendships are weakened. We need to change the narrative of political speech. Free speech is important, and is encouraged, but nobody is free of the consequences of that speech, regardless of the intentions. When you share a post, it sends a message to your followers (likely the people you are closest to) that your values align with that post. If your followers do not agree, tension will ensue. There is an unspoken rule for brands on social media that states that if a topic does not directly affect you, do not address it because backlash may occur. That advice is encouraged for all social media users. Err on the side of human decency if you feel the need to share a post and even if it is taken the wrong way, your good intentions will be brought to Beforelight.you make your next post, ask yourself if it's worth losing friends over. Most likely the answer is no. Inform yourself on the issue you're posting about and see opposing viewpoints to get a fresh perspective before you risk losing valuable relationships.

Having recently added Southwest Virginia to my territory route for work, I spent the first part of this week becoming acquainted with my longtime not-so-distant neighbors across the border. As a born and raised Tri-Cities gal, it actually was a surprise to me just how little time I’ve spent on the other side of the street, but was very pleased to discover some old favorites as well as some of the newer additions! Being the location I spent the bulk of my time, The Bristol Hotel seems like a logical place to start. Beautifully styled from the front entryway all the way to the rooftop bar Lumac, I was thoroughly impressed with the amenities and accommodations at this boutique hotel, located conveniently adjacent to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. (While most instantly associate Nashville with country music, it was actually the Bristol Sessions of 1927 that sparked the “big bang of country music.” Make sure to carve out time to tour this affiliate of the Smithsonian to gain a thorough understanding of the deep musical roots of Appalachia.) I enjoyed several delicious meals and drinks during my 4 day stay at the hotel, but my top pick has to be the grilled lamb chops with a side of brussels sprouts at Vivian’s Table downstairs. Do yourself a favor and spring for a wine from the bottle list, as they carry Barboursville Vineyards Cab Franc and it’s the perfect complement to the gamey, grilled meat.

I was surprised to see another new-ish boutique hotel in downtown Bristol, The Sessions having seemingly sprung up overnight. While I didn’t get to experience the interior rooms firsthand, the spa services, rooftop and outdoor mini amphitheater look incredible! And being familiar with the menu at Southern Craft’s Johnson City location, I know the food is not to be missed as well. It’s looking like I’ll be giving this place a try on my next work trip at the end of the Formonth.something a bit off the beaten path of downtown Bristol, I ventured out to Abingdon Vineyards. Nestled off of winding, mountain roads and accessible by boat off South Holston Lake, I was in heaven at this quiet cove. Of course with my deep love of wine, this was a no-brainer for me, but another unexpected added bonus was the lack of cell service.

There have been many new bars, restaurants and retail spaces added to Southwest VA since my move 4 years ago, and even more under construction as we speak. I am so excited to continue exploring this side of the Tri on my more frequent visits to the area. It goes to show you can still be a stranger amongst the old familiar, and taking even a small step out of your comfort zone can yield high rewards. I highly recommend joining me in my exploration!

A Few Days in Bristol VA by Kathie Scalf

As someone who is attached to 24/7 work emails, texts and phone calls, being completely off the grid while enjoying locally grown grape varietals felt like vacation, if only for an hour or so. (I was there on business after all.) I had a wonderful time getting to know the owner, Loren Gardner, and was fascinated by his family’s rich Napa Valley history and their journey to our little neck of the woods. With harvest having just begun, I’m already looking forward to seeing what’s new on my next visit. Along the same line as Abingdon Vineyard, I was made aware of Nicewonder Farm. While I didn’t have time to fit it into this trip, I have every intention of coming up early to at least enjoy the tasting room in a few weeks, if not just making a mini vacation out of it and booking a stay in one of their yurts. Their fine dining venture, Hickory, looks amazing and with over 450 acres to play, stay and imbibe, this resort destination is a much needed dash of luxury to our mountain home. It seems there’s no shortage of entertainment in the Bristol and Abingdon area as well. With the annual Rhythm & Roots festival bringing over 60,000 people to enjoy the likes of Tanya Tucker and Roseanne Cash this weekend alone, Bristol seems to be holding fast to its reputation for country music royalty. The newly designed marquee of the Cameo Theatre also boasted a slew of upcoming famous names like Blues Traveler which I tucked into the back of my mind for future travel scheduling. But even if you don’t recognize the names, I highly recommend checking out a lesser known act on a whim. Even here in Nashville, some of the best talents are still relatively undiscovered, and you never know who might be the next rising star. It’s always cool to be able to say “I knew them when,” and Bristol is just the town for that.

As commander in-chief, George Washington led the Continental Army to victory. As president of the Constitutional Convention, he helped forge the independent states into a nation. As the first President of the United States, he established precedents that continue to define that office. After his death in 1799, Washington was held “above the clouds,” to paraphrase Mason Locke Weems, the general’s most popular biographer.

On loan from the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, Washington: The Myths and the Man, coming to William King Museum of Art October 6, 2022 - January 29, 2023, will explore who George Washington was behind the screen of his renown. “Lighthorse Harry” Lee eulogized that Washington was “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen. . . . The purity of his private character gave effulgence to his public virtues.” This exhibition, featuring 13 original paintings by Ferris along with 17 historical records, focuses on Washington’s private life at Mount Vernon and reveals what motivated him to become a public Learnservant.more about the exhibition online at williamkingmuseum.org or call (276) 628-5005.

The glorification of Washington continued for more than a century, culminating in the romanticized and popular history paintings of the Philadelphia artist Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863–1930). These canvases present a remarkably appealing and virtuous figure, but provide limited reliable information about the “Father of our Country.”

time to see how much impact the sweet Diana had on the modern monicharcy. If you enjoy reading or watching events around the royal family, or just enjoy historical documentaries, I highly recommend a viewing of "The Princess", a sometimes happy and ultimately tragic life of a real life princess. Now playing on HBO and HBO Max. (Not Rated)

Pop Life

At the time Queen Elizabeth took too long to speak to the public, outraging many British citizens. Elizabeth finally made her speech on national television and viewed the outpouring of love for the Princess in front of the palace. Watching the film, I felt little empathy for Charles, but felt total heartbreak for Harry and William, who so loved their mother. It is really fascinating to see how the royal family is today and take a trip back in

The Princess "The Princess" is a fascinating and historic documentary currently showing on HBO and HBO Max, about the late Princess of Wales, Diana. The documentary tells the story of Diana twenty-five years after her death in a way it has never been told. The film covers the life of Diana from her birth until she met Prince Charles through archival footage. I really liked this style of filmmaking, as it felt as if I was watching her life unfold in real time. If you were alive at the time the courtship between Charles and Diana began, you will remember it sent the media into a frenzy. While Charles was 32 and Diana was 19 at the time, the matchup did seem almost magical. The wedding was a huge television event, and England, as did the rest of the world, continued their love affair with the new Princess of Wales. Diana was often viewed as timid, but as she grew older gained a sense of confidence and she became the most popular member of the royal family and gave birth to Prince William and later Prince Harry. There were many reasons people loved Diana. She had a real caring attitude for the sick and the poor, was very down-toearth, approachable, and loved to take her sons to theme parks. However, Diana's popularity came with a price, the supposed jealousy of the royal family, who often felt her "modern" style did not always fit with the royal's stiffness. The documentary does not do easy on Prince Charles, especially when his marriage started to crack due to his not so secret love for his current wife Camilla. The strained relationship between Charles and Diana was fodder for the gossip magazines and newspapers, and kept the public enthralled. The public often felt Diana was humiliated by the royals and kept her close to their hearts, especially after hearing she may have tried to harm herself. Despite the continued stain on their marriage, the royal couple kept up appearances and continued to appear at events until they finally decided to file for divorce, ending what many at the beginning felt had been a storybook marriage. After their divorce Diana continued to attend charity events and eventually found new love in her life. Despite her newfound happiness, her life would end tragically on the streets of Paris. Speaking of her death in Paris, the film features footage moments before the tragic crash, adding even more power to the tragedy. After the death the entire world and especially England mourned for their beloved Diana. The film features footage of thousands of flowers being left by the public in front of Buckingham Palace, eventually being viewed by the royal family, including Williams and Harry.

Newman often breaks the film up into quick flashbacks into Rachel’s past—where the kid version of Rachel is played by Newman and Woodward’s daughter. When a man Rachel grew up with comes back to town for the summer they began a small romance that finally stirs feelings inside of Rachel.

The movie was a success and was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture. Under Newman’s direction, it’s a very good, moving, real, emotionally raw movie. Though the flashbacks into Rachel’s past are disjointed by design, they can make those parts of the film a bit hard to follow. The new blu-ray of “Rachel, Rachel” looks great. It’s a fine new transfer in 1080p and has a solid grain structure and good color levels. Bonus material includes the trailer and an exhibitor promo.

The new blu-ray, sourced from original surviving 35mm elements, looks great. The black and white image is clear and sharp. Grain is on the light side, but it doesn’t look like it’s been overly scrubbed away by technicians using Digital Noise Reduction. All in all, it was a very pleasant presentation. There is only one extra, a radio adaption of the film on Lux Radio Theater. For Lincoln fans and history buffs, this one comes highly recommended. That’s all for this month in Warner Archive. I always look forward to seeing what they’re planning next and I hope they have a big slate of goodies in store for us well into the future. Be sure to look up both titles to add to your collection. See you next week. Rachel

Actor Raymond Massey made a large impact in his career when he ported Abraham Lincoln on stage in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Abe Lincoln in Illinois.” The play was adapted for a film in 1940 by RKO and Massey reprised his part for it. Both efforts were so successful for Massey that he allegedly began to adopt Lincolntype mannerisms so much that playwright and humorist George S Kaufman said “Massey won’t be satisfied until someone assassinates him.”

The film is good, but in today’s eyes, it’s very much typical of the kind of prestige biography films of historic figures that Hollywood made during the classic era. A young Ruth Gordon co-stars in the film, her first screen role, as Mary Todd Lincoln. All in all, it’s a very well-made film and Massey’s take on Lincoln is very indelible.
