Hello Friends!

Who loves a big ice cold glass of chocolate milk? I know my kids sure do! Do you like Nesquik powder or Nestle liquid or do you just buy it premade?

My entire extended family of kids love chocolate milk before bedtime or with fresh hot doughnuts. September 27th is National Chocolate Milk Day. Let’s all have a big glass to celebrate!

I hope September is being kind to everyone. It’s time to get out those hoodies and sweaters. Cool weather has arrived. I am already cold so it will be a long winter for me.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you promote your event or business. We would love to work with you. I sincerely appreciate your continued support of the paper we all love so much!

Take Care,

Lisa Durbin

Art Lab Announces New Art and Design Workshops for Fall

Art Lab at William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, VA announces more than 30 art and design classes for the Fall 2022 semester. Registration is open at WilliamKingMuseum.org/learn-atwkma or by calling 276-628-5005.

Art Lab offers fine art and technical training in a variety of media for teens and adults. Classes for Fall 2022 include

painting, printmaking, creative development, crafts and digital media.

“I’m Not Creative and I Can’t Draw” sessions aim to reignite our sense of curiosity and play through working with creative prompts and a variety of art media. “Creativity and Movement” uses movement as a tool for creative unblocking. Fall Holiday classes include Halloween wreaths, “Witch Bells”, “Scary Stickers” and a Laser Cut Leaf and Twisted Wire Tree. Winter Holiday classes in November and December include Holiday Cards, Ugly Sweatshirts, and Lasercut Snowflake ornaments.

Take advantage of temporary special rates on Adobe Bootcamp training sessions. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro and After Effects are industry standard tools for creative professionals worldwide. Art Lab’s Adobe training sessions provide a technical foundation for future graphics experts, art students, and professionals interested in increasing their skill set. Workshops in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and

After Effects begin in October and run through the end of November.

Painting classes include sketchbook techniques, acrylic and mixed media painting. Richard Graves “Figure Drawing Techniques for a Sketchbook Practice” offers an overview of tips and tricks for expressive figure drawing while developing a sketchbook practice.

Greg Howser’s “Intro to Acrylic” and “Mixed Media Painting” classes explore both painting basics and more experimental techniques.

Opportunities for teens are provided through Art Lab’s Teen Lab program. Weekly workshops in studio arts and crafts, digital art, and art film discussion are offered at a “pay-whatyou-want” price point.

Participants can work through a variety of digital and physical media projects and film analysis to build technical skills and support the development of creative voice.

Class descriptions are at williamkingmuseum.org/learn-atwkma. For additional information contact Laken Bridges, Director of Higher Education at lbridges@wkmuseum.org or Alice Salyer, Digital Lab Manager, at asalyer@wkmuseum.org or call 276-628-5005.

Hi! I’m Jack! I’m a 2 and a half year old Hound. I am good with cats, dogs (smaller or the same size as me) and kids. I am leash trained and house trained and am high energy. I do have some issues with manners - I like to counter surf so keep an eye on me !!!

Beanz Biker CornerBeanz Biker Corner

Hello to everyone, hope all is well with you and your families. This week I thought it would be nice to write about the Fall season since the first day of Fall was Thursday September 22nd and doesn’t end till Wednesday December 21st and the first day of Winter. If you ride now is the time to get in as much riding as you can old man Winter is just around the corner. September equinox marks the first day of fall. A solar equinox is a moment in time when the Sun crosses the Earth's equator, which is to say, appears directly above the equator (rather than north or south of the equator). On the day of the equinox, the Sun appears to rise "due east" and set "due west". This occurs twice each year, once in March and then again in September.

Autumn, also known as Fall in American English, is one of the four temperate seasons. Outside the tropics, autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, in September Autumn is the season when the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperature cools considerably. Day length decreases and night length increases as the season progresses until the Winter Solstice in December. One of its main features in temperate climates is the striking change in color for the leaves of deciduous trees as they prepare to shed. Autumn, especially in poetry, has often been

associated with melancholia. The possibilities and opportunities of summer are gone, and the chill of winter is on the horizon. Skies turn grey, the amount of usable daylight drops rapidly, and many people turn inward, both physically and mentally. Then in November the time falls back 1 hour. It has been referred to as an unhealthy season.

(Red, Orange, and Yellow Leaves) Autumn is characterized by red, orange, and yellow leaves on trees, signaling the end of their lives. Nature is awash in these colors, which give autumn a distinct warmth and beauty. Baskets –Baskets are seen to represent autumn because fall is the season of harvesting. Traditionally, baskets were used for harvesting hence the representation. (Apples and Grapes) During this season, these fruits are harvested in plenty. This symbolic association can be traced to the Welsh, who line their altars with apples and grapes during the autumnal equinox as a show of thanksgiving. (Teeming Cornucopias) Cornucopias full of farm produce are an excellent representation of this harvest season. They represent the abundance and plenty that comes with harvest.

Autumn is associated with Halloween (influenced by Samhain, a Celtic autumn festival), and with it a widespread marketing campaign that promotes it.

The Celtic people also used this time to celebrate the harvest with a time of feasting. At the same time though, it was a celebration of death as well. Crops were harvested, livestock were butchered, and Winter was coming. Fall's temperature is usually just perfect. It's not too hot and not too cold. Sweater weather is always great! They're super comfy and just perfect for the cool weather outside!

Halloween, free candy and chocolate everywhere.

What is a cause of the season fall? The cycle of seasons is caused by Earth’s tilt toward the sun. The planet rotates around an invisible axis. At different times during the year, the northern or southern axis is closer to the sun. During these times of the year, the hemispheres experience spring and autumn.

beautiful season to human life. These symbolic associations are powerful reminders that Mother Nature has an incredible influence on our lives.

There are 7 Symbolic Meanings of Autumn. (Change) - Autumn reminds us that our bodies, minds, and surroundings are always changing and developing. (Mystery) Thanks to the changing nature of life, each day presents us with new mysteries. (Preservation) Autumn represents the preservation of life and its necessities.

Useless Facts About Fall:

is prime time for seeking comfort in the midst of dropping temperatures. Creating a serene and snug space is one of the best perks of autumn. (Balance) Day and night are the same length during the autumnal equinox. As a result, ancient cultures have always associated this day with the concept of balance. The sun also enters Libra, which is symbolized by a pair of balanced scales. Autumn grants us a chance to harmonize with the Earth and tap into the balance within us. (Letting Go) As temperatures drop to the tune of falling leaves, autumn illustrates the beauty of letting go. What Does the Bible Say About Fall Season?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.

1. People who live on the equator never experience fall (unless they go on vacation); geomagnetic storms occur twice as often during the fall as the annual average.

2. Levels of testosterone in both men and women are at their highest in the fall.

3. Catching leaves in the fall supposedly brings good luck, according to superstition. Each leaf you catch means a lucky month in the next year.

4. The black-capped chickadee’s hippocampus enlarges by 30 percent, enabling it to remember where it collected seeds in different spots in trees and on the ground.

5. We use the word “fall” while Brits use the word “autumn,” but before those terms began to be used in the 16th century the season was called “harvest.”

6. Pumpkin Pie Spice Doesn’t Taste Like Pumpkin. The ingredients are Cinnamon, Ginger, Cloves & Nutmeg

7. More People Fall in Love in Fall. The cooler weather in fall makes people want to get closer to others and not be alone for the winter. So get ready to snuggle in the fall.

Thinking about autumn can bring about some pleasant thoughts. And while it is common to think about cozy scarves and delicious pies, the symbolic meanings of autumn are more profound than that.

Ancient cultures, science, and astrology have associated many aspects of this

9. Fall Leaf Colors are Caused by Sugar. Everyone loves those colorful leaf colors in the fall from vibrant reds to eye-popping bright oranges, but did you know that the color the leaves turn is based on how much sugar is in the leaves. That’s why maple leaves are such a brilliant red color.

10. You Can See the Brightest Full Moon in Fall. The full moon in the fall that occurs during the equinox is much brighter (almost orange) and rises much earlier than a typical full moon. This full moon, called the Harvest Moon occurs sometime in September or October.

Please Stop Pushing Your MLM!

We've all heard the pitch before: Be your own #girlboss! Like nails on a chalkboard, we push through the noise of pushy sales tactics to get to the meat of our feed.

Multi level marketing schemes are popping up throughout all social media platforms. They make promises to increase income enough to quit your job and just work for them. They claim their products will enrich your life and you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.

But you did live without them. And before you sunk your life savings into them life was better. Your

friends weren't bombarded with sales pitches and being guilted into supporting the brand you're pushing.

Your MLM tactics are ruining how people see you. Before pushy sales schemes people saw the real you. Create less MLM content and more photos that show your family, friends, and followers the person behind the page. Your supporters will buy from you without pushy tactics because they want you to succeed. If you enjoy selling the products, show it. Show how they impact your daily life. You don't need to be pushy, you just need to believe in your brand and sales will follow.

Perfect Fall Getaway

After 7 long years I’ve finally penciled in a proper vacation for the end of October. While I’ve been blessed to take some trips here and there, nothing has lasted longer than a long weekend and it’s definitely starting to show. While I’m taking an entire week away from work, I’m splitting it up half at home and half away, because when you spend as much time on the road and in hotels as I do, nothing feels more like a vacation than your own bed. With that being said, for the “away” portion of my trip, I’ve booked the ultimate autumnal getaway and I couldn’t be more excited. And the best part is that it’s only about an hour from the Tri in North Carolina! So I’m sharing my itinerary with you all in case you also need a relaxing stay amongst the leaves. The little mountain villages nestled between the peaks and valleys of the western North Carolina Appalachians are some of my favorite places on Earth. Blowing Rock, Boone, Linville, and Banner Elk in particular are always full of yearround fun, but during fall they really show their colors.

I began planning my trip by picking the perfect date. Based on prior experience and scheduling conflicts, I chose the 3rd weekend in October, as the leaves really seem to peak around weeks 2 and 3 of the month. Any later and you miss them, any earlier and it’s still summertime. While most people choose to do a 3 night stay over the weekend, I opted to shift mine Sunday-Wednesday, giving myself more options for lodging at drastically reduced prices. The only downside to this decision is that some restaurants close early in the week so be sure to check hours of

operation at all destinations you’re wanting to take in.

Once I landed on the date, I pondered on my accommodations. Did I want to stay at a condo atop Sugar Mountain with all the amenities of a hotel? Did I want to try a rustic “glamping” adventure in a yurt or RV?

I opted instead for a rustic stone cabin in the woods, complete with a hot tub and fireplace for total relaxation and privacy. I chose to stay in Banner Elk because that is the headquarters for all the dining options I want to see, but all these little towns are so close together it’s not going to make that much of a difference.

After securing my lodging my mind shifted to my favorite activities-food and drink. There are 5 unique and beautiful wineries in this area and any one of them are the perfect place to spend an afternoon taking in live music and sipping/strolling your way through the vines. With my 3p check-in and an early evening dinner reservation in Banner Elk, I’m going to head up around 1p on Sunday to Banner Elk Winery and relax with a glass of vino and locally made Trosly Farms chocolates. It will be a short trip to the cabin to check in and freshen up before I settle in at the Chef’s Table at Sorrento’s for a multi-course feast that will begin with cocktails and amuse-bouche and end in flames with their rolling flambe station. The in-between will be filled with perfectly paired entrees and wines selected from their seasonally changing menu. If I’m not in a fullblown diabetic coma, I hope to end the night snuggled up in front of a roaring fire and preparing for a good night’s sleep.

With all the delicious food and beverage in the area, it’s a good thing there’s no shortage of outdoor activities to burn off the sins of Sunday night’s meal. After taking in

my hot coffee on the chilly balcony, I want to get an early start with a hike on Grandfather Mountain across the Mile High Swinging Bridge. Since it’s so close by, it only makes sense to pop in Grandfather Mountain Winery afterward to calm my nerves and try their newest vintages of locally produced grapes. Monday will be the perfect night to stay in, with most restaurants being closed for the evening. I want to grab a few groceries and whip up something hearty and delicious for dinner, followed by reading a good book and soothing my hiking legs in the hot tub until bedtime.

Tuesday is probably the day I’m most excited for, as I managed to snag a sunset reservation at Artisnal, a seasonal restaurant I’ve been dying to try for 2 years. Between their limited hours and constant full bookings, I’ve never managed to secure a seat at this 3-course, prix fixe, wine cellared spectacular. But all that will soon be changing and I cannot wait! But before I send myself off with the Last Supper of vacation, I have the whole day to spend however I want. I absolutely adore Blowing Rock, and in autumn it’s like something out of a Hallmark film. All the streets are lined with mums and gourds of all shapes, colors and sizes, and due to the high elevation, there’s typically a thin layer of fog lingering over the city, which gives it the perfect spooky Halloween vibe. There’s numerous shops and restaurants, but a must-see for me is always grabbing a pint and a nibble at Blowing Rock Ale House. This local taphouse has one unique feature-it also doubles as a bed & breakfast! So if you prefer the charm of a b&b, you could definitely book a stay in one of their quaint cozy rooms and be mere steps away from tasty brews and delicious food 24/7.

Wednesday I check out of my cabin, but since I’m off the rest of the week

I’m in no rush. I want to wind my way back down the mountain with a drive around the Blue Ridge Parkway and get as many photos I can of the beautiful fall foliage. Be prepared for hundreds of leaf-lookers to be doing the same, and while the traffic can get a little congested, it’s worth it for the breathtaking 360 degree views of fall’s last hurrah.

While this itinerary is all subject to change, except the reservations, I intend to keep a laid-back attitude and go with the flow, come what may. No matter the weather or circumstances, I am so elated to just enjoy some peace and quiet in a part of the country where there is no cell service. I hope my plans have been enough to inspire you to do the same, if only for a bit! We live in such a beautiful part of the world, it’d be a shame to miss autumn at its absolute best!

"Jaws" Revisited

The classic film "Jaws" is considered by film historians to be the first summer blockbuster in the history of cinema. Translation: sold out showings, massive merchandising, uber fans and sequels. The film was based on the 1974 Peter Benchely novel of the same name, and hit theatres in the summer of 1975. I was one of the many curious and excited fans who saw the movie that summer, which is quite amazing since I am only 30 (LOL!). The impact of this film on Hollywood was amazing, and summer became the time when "event" movies became as much a part of summer as did vacations, as "Star Wars" was soon to follow. So it was with much excitement that I learned the film was being re-released to theaters in the 3D format.

I was able to attend the film with some friends one of whom had never seen the film on the big screen, and one who had never SEEN it before. Needless to say, one friend

Pop Life

loved the big screen experience and the other really enjoyed the film in general. Of course most of us know the movie follows Amity Island police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) as he attempts to prepare the island for the invading tourists coming to celebrate the 4th of July. Of course something else is invading the island after a girl is attacked while swimming one night while attending a beach party. When Brody discovers the remains of the unfortunate swimmer, he realizes the beach must be closed, but is met with strong resistance by local business owners and the town's unscruplious mayor. In a moment of utter stupidity the mayor attempts to convince Brody and the coroner the girl was killed in a boating accident. Brody is still extremely worried and frightened for the vacationers, and his concerns come to fruition when a boy is attacked and killed in the view of a crowded beach. This leads to a bounty being placed on the shark, and the first appearance of professional shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw). Also showing up to investigate is marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), who often clashes with Quint. The local fishermen and other reckless men set out to sea in an attempt to catch the shark for the huge bounty. When one fisherman catches a tiger shark, the locals feel the killer shark is now dead. Not so fast. After Brody and Hooper find another corpse that has been attacked

by a shark, their attempts to close the beaches fail again thanks to the stubborn mayor. After another shark attack, this time in a lagoon, the mayor finally agreed to hire Quint to track down the shark, and he is joined by Hooper and Brody. Their adventures aboard a small boat are exciting and feature the classic line "we're going to need a bigger boat" after seeing the great white shark for the first time. This was director Steven Spielberg's second feature film, and he nearly backed out of the project, and movie fans everywhere should be grateful he did not, as we probably wouldn't have the classic film loved by so many. One of the best aspects of the film, is how Speilberg decided to film from the sharks pov, due to issues with the mechanical shark used in the film. This technique actually made the shark seem even more terrifying, an unseen danger. The film has the ever

familiar soundtrack composed by John Williams, who would create so many famous film soundtracks in the coming years, and who early in his career is credited as Johnny Willimas for composing the themes for the 1960's television show "Lost in Space". Many fans may not realize actor Richard Dreyfuss stated the following: "We started the film without a script, without a cast and without a shark". The aforementioned is quite shocking considering how this film became a classic of American cinema. If there is ever another opportunity to see "Jaws" on the big screen and in 3D, run to the theater, and you will feel like you are in the water and in the middle of cinema history. (Rated PG)

If you’ve been following my column this Summer you may be aware that it’s been a big Summer of necessary upgrades to equipment in the Andyplex, the nickname I use for my home theater, my one true sanctuary from the world these days. First, the TV finally showed it was ready for a rest and that allowed me to upgrade from a 2006 model to a modern 4K capable display, which has increased the cinematic quality of my movies.

I was happy and content with the new screen and had a few friends over to watch “Jurassic Park” as a way of throwing a little christening party for the new screen. Yet during the movie, I noticed that certain bits of the dialogue sounded kind of odd. Now I am a perfectionist, much to my chagrin and I’m also an audiophile. You can imagine how those two things can create some maddening deep dives into fixing things. As my aunt says “he’s so particular.”

New Speaker Woes

I have surround sound in my home theater. Nothing fancy, a simple tried true five-speaker set up with a subwoofer. The receiver handles high-res audio so I’m getting theater-grade sound. That’s why these little voices passes in “Jurassic Park” stood out to me. I didn’t think anything of it, but a few weeks later I was watching a Harrison Ford film and couldn’t help but notice that something was “tinging” the center speaker where all the dialogue comes from.

It’s hard to describe the sound. It sounded like at certain passages of dialogue, certain frequencies, that the audio was getting trapped inside the speaker and not fully leaving. It was vibrating the whole speaker housing. As if the audio was “red-lining” inside the speaker. On the one hand, this began to annoy me and I toyed with ways to fix this. On the other, the speakers in my home

theater are over 20 years old and I suppose it’s amazing I’ve not had to replace any till now.

Yes, after a good month or so of wondering what was up, I finally decided to go out and get a new center speaker. I miss the days when we had several electronic stores around here, and when you could easily find more speakers for the home theater.

I did some research and picked the best option and bought it. A new speaker by Sony. I set it up and was amazed by how sharp and clear it sounded, that “vibration” was gone and I swear I could hear things I hadn’t noticed before in center channel sound with movies I know well.

And as I know those movies so well I also began to notice that some things still sounded a bit off, as if there is no low-end. So now I’m down the rabbit hole of making sure the new speaker

is set up right and I’ve got all the things adjusted. Another maddening process and another time I wish I wasn’t such a perfectionist. Of course, the new speaker may be so new I need to give it time to “break in.”

It’s a new speaker for the first time in 20 years, maybe it will sound a bit different at first and my “well-adjusted ears” will take time to adjust to the new one. But still, I know this means another afternoon of listening and checking, checking and listening. I just hope this is the last time I have to replace anything in the Andyplex for some time to come. As I know the next thing I’ll do when the audio goes in want to upgrade to Dolby Atmos and add more speakers. But I’d like to save up a bit for that and not do it on a whim. Owning a home theater is fun, and also sometimes aggravating. See you next week.
