Haunted East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia
ppalachia has long been the source of many legends of spooky places and happenings. Spine-tingling stories and tall tales of haints (ghosts) and boogers (demons or bad people) have been passed down since before Europe ans settled the region. Mountain folk had variations of the word booger and they were usually used by parents to encourage children to stay on the straight and narrow. One area in Sevierville is called Boogertown because a late night traveler saw the eyes of a demon staring at him only to find out it was only a cow. The name stuck and you can visit Boogertown today. Appalachian folk had various methods of repelling haints, some that you can still see today.
Bottle Tree - This is a tradition of placing colored bottles on the limbs of a tree near the house and is believed to trap spirits before they get inside.
Blue Porch Ceilings - Now called Haint Blue, this color of blue was painted on the porch ceilings
because it was believed spirits couldn’t cross because they would think it was water. People have also been known to put blue panes of glass in their windows for the same reason.
Opening Windows When Someone Dies - This allows the deceased person’s spirit to leave the home.
Mirrors by the Door or Newspapers on the Wall - Mirrors were thought to distract a vain demon sidetrack ing it’s intentions and everyone knew that no spirit could resist reading the newspaper, which diverts them from mischief.
There are lots of places in our region with stories connected to them that you can still visit.
Livewire 103.9 Radio is currently running features for the month of October that dramatically tells some of these stories about haunt ed places. Haunted East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia features tales that range from Native Amer ican legends to the not so distant past. Livewire includes stories about haints at Barter Theatre in Abingdon, East Hill Cemetery and the train station in Bristol, Roth erwood in Kingsport, the many legends of “Long Dog” from the Holston River Valley and the rest
less spirits of Bethesda Cemetery in Morristown. Don’t forget Tennes see’s Oldest Town, Jonesborough, that must have at least one ghost story for each of the buildings downtown. Listen everyday to hear these chilling stories and watch Livewire’s Facebook for more infor mation. Livewire encourages you to join us in some local cemetery ex periences such as “Spot on the Hill” in Jonesborough, Bristol’s East Hill Cemetery Ghost Walk and Knox ville’s Spirits of Old Gray. These are great ways to learn about local history AND give yourself goose bumps. So grab your friends and family and take an October Appala chian Road Trip. You can follow our detailed directions from Facebook to some of these spine-tingling locations... if you dare!

In Memory of Carson D. Reed
September 23, 2000 -October 10, 2021
In loving memory of my youngest son Carson D. Reed whose life was cut short only 2 weeks after his 21st Birthday. My son was the most loving, selfless, handsome, intelligent, Christian young man you could meet. He loved to sing karaoke, act goofy, fish, hunt, play baseball since he was 4, loved his family and friends, and in his short 21 years of life he led several individuals to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. I know this because my father was one of those people. This past year had been the
hardest year of my life and I don’t expect it to get easier. I have to find a way to continue sharing his dreams and goals in his memory for my son. These are things I know he would want me to do.
My son died from an accidental drug overdose. A friend gave him a pressed Xanax (manmade) which was laced with a lethal dose of Oxycodone. Carson was allergic to Oxycodone. According to the coroner he passed away in his sleep within 20 mins of consumption. After his death I was contacted my several mothers and friends of mothers whose sons also passed away within the Tri-Cities. All whom passed away from Xanax laced with Fentanyl or some other lethal drug. We do have a problem in our area. No one hears about it because like my son…. he was just a statistic to someone else. Please talk to your children, your kids in high school, college and those graduating college….. just because it’s your friend do NOT take anything from anyone unless prescribed by their own doctor with their own name on it. That friend might not know what is wrong with the pill/ pills but it comes from a chain of people with the intent to get the youth addicted or cause death. Love your children today as if there is no tomorrow. Because tomorrow is never promised.
Forever 21 Carson #2 Mailee Reed

Hello everyone, hope you are getting ready for cooler temps. Tis the season for leather (chaps, gloves, jackets). It maybe cooler but we can still ride until the snow starts to fall. There are a few rides and rallies going on, so go enjoy yourself. Please ride safe, dress warm and keep your knees in the breeze.
Changing of the colors, as Fall is here the colors start to change but not for the reason you may think. Many people think that cold weather is solely responsible for the color change in leaves, but not so. Leaves begin to turn before we have any frosts. Change in coloring is the result of chemical processes, which take place in the tree as the seasons change. During the spring and summer, a food-making process takes place in the leaves, within cells containing the pigment chlorophyll. This gives the leaf its green color. The chlorophyll absorbs energy from sunlight and uses it in transforming carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch. In the fall, the decrease in intensity and duration of sunlight, and the cooler temperatures, cause the leaves to stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellowish colors or other pigments already in the leaf become visible. Autumn weather conditions favoring the most brilliant colors are warm sunny days and cool, but not freezing,
nights. A few hard frosts can cause the leaves to wither and fall from the tree without changing color. The degree of color may also vary from tree to tree. Leaves directly exposed to the sun may turn red, while those on the shady side may be yellow. When warm, cloudy, and rainy weather dominates the fall season, leaves tend to have less coloration. A color palette needs pigments, and there are three types that are involved in autumn color: - Carotenoids: Produces yellow, orange, and brown colors in such things as corn, carrots, and daffodils, as well as rutabagas, buttercups, and bananas. - Anthocyanin: Gives color to such familiar things as cranberries, red apples, concord grapes, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, and plums. They are water soluble and appear in the watery liquid of leaf cells. - Chlorophyll: Gives leaves a basic green color. It is necessary for photosynthesis, the chemical reaction that enables plants to use sunlight to manufacture sugars for food.
Certain colors are characteristic of particular species: - Oaks: red, brown, or russet - Hickories: golden bronzeAspen and yellow-poplar: golden yellow - Dogwood: purplish red - Beech: light tan - Sourwood and black tupelo: crimson. The color of maples leaves differ species by species: - Red maple: brilliant scarlet
and shed to ensure the plant's continued survival
You can find autumn color in parks and woodlands, in the cities, countryside, and mountains - anywhere you find deciduous broadleaved trees, the ones that drop their leaves in the autumn. New England is rightly famous for the spectacular autumn colors painted on the trees of its mountains and
countryside, but the Adirondack, Appalachian, Smoky, and Rocky Mountains are also clad with colorful displays. In the East, we can see the reds, oranges, golds, and bronzes of the mixed deciduous woodlands; in the West, we see the bright yellows of aspen stands and larches contrasting with the dark greens of the evergreen conifers.
By Anne Hartley- Sugar maple: orange-red - Black maple: glowing yellow - Striped maple: almost colorless. Some leaves of some species, such as the elms simply shrivel up and fall, exhibiting little color other than drab brown. Evergreens: pines, spruces, cedars, firs, and so on are able to survive winter because they have toughened up. Their needle-like or scale-like foliage is covered with a heavy wax coating and the fluid inside their cells contains substances that resist freezing. Thus the foliage of evergreens can safely withstand all but the severest winter conditions, such as those in the Arctic. Evergreen needles survive for some years but eventually fall because of old age. Broad-leaved trees: These are trees that do not have needles or scale-like leaves. They are tender and vulnerable to damage, are typically broad and thin and are not protected by any thick coverings. The fluid in the cells of these leaves is usually a thin, watery sap that freezes readily, which makes them vulnerable in the winter when temperatures fall below freezing. Tissues unable to overwinter must be sealed off

By Wendy Hayden“When neighbors start talking, good things happen.”
I am not a great girl friend. Actually, when it comes down to it, I’m not that great at being a girl in general. And it’s becoming apparent enough now that even I’m noticing, which means it might be time to make a change.
I mentioned last week that things in the friendship department have kind of fallen to the wayside due to work/life balance and internal growing pains. What used to be a long list of fun acquaintances in my recent call log has dwindled to approximately 3 humans who aren’t work associations. My phone used to ring daily for evening dinners and drinks and I hardly had time to fit in all the activities I’d planned with a variety of groups on the weekends. These days, I’m either spending my weeknights on the road chatting mindlessly with strangers at hotel bars over dinner or wolfing down a hastily prepared dinner in front of my tv, and it’s almost guaranteed my phone doesn’t make a peep on the weekends. Truthfully I stay so busy and tired, sometimes I don’t even notice until Sunday night.
While being comfortable alone is a positive, there is something to be said for too much of a good thing. Humans are pack animals. We crave interaction and connection, and I’d be
Getting Girly
lying if I didn’t say I’m so starved for human touch that at this point getting my hair done feels like getting to 3rd base on a date. Women in particular are naturally more inclined to need intimacy, sharing and exchange of emotions to feel fulfilled, while men could just grunt at each other for 4 hours of a ballgame once a week and be perfectly fine.
I have always been more of a guy’s girl. Since I was a kid, I always found it far less stressful and way more fun to be one of the dudes. There’s no catty gossip, you always know where you stand, we like the same crude comedies and horror films, and in place of hours of shopping and yoga classes (which I despise) we can eat artery-clogging food and drink good booze (which I thoroughly enjoy.)
The problem with being one of the guys is that they treat you like one of the guys- 24/7, 365. It is totally forgotten by everyone else that you are still a woman with female needs and emotion and, while I’m always down for a rip-roaring good time, I also need to have deeper connections within my friendships. I don’t care how close you are with your guy friends, there are some things they are simply incapable of understanding or executing when it comes to women and that is why you need at least a few really good ladies in your life.
This was slapped in my face hard in August when my dog of 17 years passed away. It was and still is the most devastating trauma I’ve experienced; as of this publication I’ve yet to have a day where I haven’t cried at some point. And while all my friends for the most part reached out with condolences, I was shocked to receive gifts of sympathy from very unexpected girlfriends afar. These are ladies I don’t even speak to on a daily basis, but they understood on a deeper level the tremendous grief I was experiencing and sent me incredibly thoughtful pieces of memorabilia that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I can never thank them enough for that.
One way I can try however, is to simply be a better girl friend to people. These very masculine traits I’ve acquired from years of communicating with men don’t need to be employed with women in my life. I need to soften a bit, stop demanding the same “no-nonsense” mindset out of females that I get from males and develop better empathy and understanding. Reaching out to people who aren’t asking for help when they’re struggling can make all the difference in the world to someone who is hurting. Instead of just offering a “sorry” and moving on back to my life, I need to go that extra step to let them know they’re loved.
by Kathie ScalfAnd I definitely need to work on my total repulsion to physical touch. I’ve always been weird about touchy-feely displays of affection with anyone beyond very serious relationships; I’ve only ever hugged my very best friend twice in 31 years. But a big hug from a genuine person is a wonderful thing and I don’t know why I deprive myself of it. That’s probably more of a question for my therapist at this point.
Regardless of your gender, I don’t see anything wrong with all of us trying to be better “girl-friends.” Male, female or otherwise, this world could really use a little more empathy, caring and hugs from good people.
KathieDo Revenge
ake "Clueless" and combine that film with "Mean Girls" and you will have the fill of the current film "Do Revenge". The film stars Camila Mendes of "Riverdale" fame and Maya Hawke of "Stranger Things" fame. Mendes stars as popular student Drea Torres who is attending Rosehill Country Day High School on a scholarship, and Hawke is featured as Eleanor, a rather awkward and less-thanpopular student. Thus, the two have very different high school experiences, but will eventually cross paths and eventually become friends. Matters start going downhill for Drea after her boyfriend anonymously releases a scandalous video of her in an intimate moment. The video results in Drea becoming an outcast just as school is about to end for the summer. During the summer Drea works at a tennis camp where she crosses paths with Eleanor one day after her car fails to start. While Eleanor is taking Drea home, she reveals she has also become an outcast at school after a rumor spreads about her that may or may not be true. The revelation by Eleanor results in the two uniting in order to seek revenge on each other's rivals. Drea will help seek revenge on Elenaor's rival Carissa (Ava Capri), and Eleanor will help seek

By Ken Silvers theloaferonlineprint @gmail.comrevenge on Drea's ex-boyfriend Max (Austin Abrams). The plan begins with Drea giving Eleanor a makeover (apparently always a part of these teen movies) to make her more alluring to Max, and give her the opportunity to become a part of Drea's old clique. Eleanor is able to become a part of Drea's old clique and discovers Max is cheating on his new girlfriend, providing some ammunition for the duo's plot. Meanwhile, Drea runs across Carissa at the beach and is able to steal her keys, giving her access to the school's greenhouse which Carissa helps run, and has some controversial items growing in the locked greenhouse. The "special" items are later used by Drea in the food at the school's Senior Ring Ceremony, resulting in quite shocking behaviour. When Drea discovers Max hiding under a table and stoned out of his mind, she is able to get his phone and she and Eleanor discover Max to be a serial cheater. The ceremony ends with Carissa being found guilty of growing magic mushrooms and marijuana in the school's greenhouse. The two plan to reveal the cheating ways of Max at the Valentine's Day assembly, and when the do, Max and his current girlfriend pretend to be a polyamorous couple. As if the plot not working as planned is not enough, Drea learns she has been rejected by her dream school Yale, and spirals downward. Her disappointment and continued rejection by the popular students results in Drea devising another plan to take down Max and her former friends at the upcoming Admissions party which will be attended only by those students who have been accepted by an Ivy League school. As the new plan develops, Eleanor, who has become a part of Max's clique, is surprised by Max and crew when they throw her a birthday party. Drea crashes the party and realizes Eleanor
loves being popular, and has taken Max's side, resulting in the two new friends separating. Drea is able to uncover some dirt on Eleanor after she visits Carissa at a rehab facility, and plans on using the info to take down her former friend. When Drea confronts Eleanor with her newly acquired info, Eleanor reveals her own shocking information, and things turn even more sour between the duo, until a moment at the Admissions Party unites the two once more. The film does end on a happy note despite all the drama and teenage angst. The actors are all perfectly suited to their respective roles, with
Mendes hardly needing to stretch in a role that is not that far removed from her role as Veronica in "Riverdale". As for Hawke, she often steals the movie, as she does in her role on "Stranger Things." The film is not in any way groundbreaking, but does provide another new story for those who enjoy films of this genre.
"Do Revenge" is pure pop fluff, and is a pleasant diversion for those seeking a bit of dark comedy. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated TV-MA)
Thoughts While Listening to Someone Explain the Rules of the Game
I’m excited. I’ve been wanting to try Catfish Warriors from Mars for quite some time. I hear it’s a very fun and challenging game. Wow, these playing pieces they’ve handed me look so cool! Look how detailed these sculptures are. I wonder how much this game cost? Looks like it must have been in the $70 range. Oh, OK. They’re gonna start explaining the rules. I better pay attention.
OK, if my warrior gets in the same space as a horse knight from Neptune, I’m out for two rounds and recovering in the recharge zone. Wait. What? “Recharge zone?” Who came up with the idea for this game? I wonder if they were baked at the time? I’ve seen bad sci-fi films from the 1950s with more coherent plots. Personal dice? I thought those eight dice sitting near me were for everyone to use. Nope? We each get a set of eight dice to use during battle and to determine the strength of my warrior when it comes time for the final battle against Suckcromino,
The Demon From the 7th Realm. But we may not get to the final battle if the power cells of laser litter go empty before round six. Huh? I missed that on my player sheet. So are we about ready to start this or what? How far into the rulebook are they? Oh, hell. It’s been fifteen minutes and they’re just halfway through!? This is poor design, some of these games come with a cheat card to help you remember what to do on your turn. I wonder if that info is on my player sheet? How to look without making it seem like I’m looking? Nope. I don’t see a single thing on my sheet about what to do on my turn.
Well, this is just great. I tuned out five minutes ago and missed the
whole section about my character's special power. Why wasn’t that on my sheet and why is it I can only use my power if the other warriors are in the same space as me? I get that these new games are supposed to provide a stimulating challenge, but moments like this make me miss the simplicity of Sorry. Pick a card, move. Pick a card, and send a player back home. Ahh, we bless the Parker Brothers.
OK, it’s been forty-five minutes and we’re finally ready to play! I get to go first! I rolled a 46 which means I move to Quadrate 4, section 6, then can go to either my left or right. I’ll go to my right. What!? I’ve been attacked by the Undead Chicken King? That means I’m out for three
rounds!? Did I miss that part!?
Did they read that part? I am so confused.
Right. I am back in the game, but now thanks to a spell cast I’ve been transported to the spaceship and have one shot to fire one missile. At what? Would someone please tell me at what? I am so confused, but I can’t tell them this. I don’t want to seem like I wasn’t paying attention or am an idiot. What if I just go to the center and yell “Jumanji!?”
Does that work in some other games? Maybe it’ll end this and I can go home. I’m tired. It’s been 14 hours. See you next week
