NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello Friends!
Halloween is almost here! It looks like the kids are really going to have to bundle up this year. I can’t believe how cold it is! I am afraid this winter is going to be really cold. I hate the cold so it will be a long winter for me.
There seems to be lots of Halloween activities for the kids this year. Please be sure to keep them warm and safe. I have seen some new stories about lacing candy with drugs so I would stress checking every single piece in those cute little buckets.
Speaking of buckets, I would love to give a huge shout out to the marketing genius at McDonalds. They sure know how to keep the buzz all about them. Just a few weeks ago adults were racing to their stores to get adult happy meals and get the free double eyed toys. Now we are off to the drive thru again to get the cute little Halloween buckets for our kids. Social media is on fire about these buckets and parents are trying to find certain ones such as the pumpkin. Kudos to you McDonalds! Job well done. I hope everyone has a great week! Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park Presents Scary Stories at Fort Watauga
Thursday, October 27 at 7:30 pm
Strange things happen around All Hallows Eve, especially at an old fort by the river.
But don’t be afraid, Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals isn’t haunted… or is it?
Bring a chair, sit a spell, and join us for an evening of stories, songs, and tales that are sure to send a shiver down your spine and tickle your funny bone. On Thursday, October 27th at 7:30 pm, the park will be alive with tales of haints and happenings of days gone by. An annual event not to be missed, Scary Stories will be presented in inside the looming palisade walls of Fort Watauga providing a unique atmosphere for an evening of spooky tales geared toward the entire family.
We are excited to welcome five exceptional storytellers to the stage this year: Dr. C. Keith Young, Catherine Yael Serota, Wallace Shealy, and the Front Porch Storytellers - Mary Jane Kennedy, and Chad Bogart. Each of these talented tellers is sure to raise goosebumps on your skin and bring a smile to your face!
Dr. C. Keith Young, Raconteur, is delighted to have the opportunity to return to the Scary Stories at Fort Watauga. Having charmed audiences of all ages for more than three decades (since graduating from the ETSU Reading and Story Arts program), Dr. Young has been a featured storyteller/emcee at festival events such
as Jonesborough Days, the Virginia Highlands Festival, the Erwin Strawberry Festival, the Stone Soup Festival in Woodruff, South Carolina, Roan Mountain State Park/Miller Homestead Days, Elizabethton’s Covered Bridge Festival, and many, many more. He is a favorite among programs that enjoy energetic, rib-tickling, family-friendly songs and tales.
Catherine Yael Serota is Southern-Appalachian born, from Asheville NC. Her career in human services lasted 42 years and took her from Greensboro NC across the state to Johnson City TN. She developed an interest in storytelling four years ago as a result of a lifetime of reading, a love of articulation and history, and now time to pursue these in retirement. Catherine is a board member of the Asheville Storytelling Circle, the North Carolina Storytelling Guild, and an alumna member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild.
Wallace Shealy, from Flag Pond, TN has the distinction of being named the 2010 Bold Faced Liar Champion by the Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast. Wallace is active with the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild and has been involved with the National Storytelling Festival for more than 30 years. Whether he’s recalling a tale from his childhood, telling a story based on the Good Book or spinning a yarn you will be delighted listening to him stretch the truth all out of proportion.
Mary Jane Kennedy spent 30 years teaching in Orlando. She has a background in music, voiceover, historical research, and storytelling. She is
the co-founder of The Homespun Storytellers and The Overmountain Singers. Also, as a cofounder of The Front Porch Storytellers, she has presented storytelling and music programs at many schools, civic functions, senior homes, and organizations throughout the Appalachian Highlands for nearly twenty years along with the popular Historic Ghost Walks of Elizabethton.
Chad Bogart descends from a long line of Appalachian storytellers. His telling is enhanced by a background in music and historical interpretation. He has been featured as a historic interpreter and character demonstrator at over fifty historic sites across the eastern US. Locally, Chad has been a featured storyteller at the Mountain Makins Festival in Morristown,
TN, the Bonnie Kate Theater in Elizabethton, and the campfire series at both Roan Mountain State Park and Rock Creek Park in Erwin. He is also a co-founder of the Front Porch Storytellers. His interest in scary stories stemmed from ghost tales told by his grandmother and are a favorite among his listeners.
The program will be presented inside Fort Watauga so be sure to bring your own seat. Also, make sure to dress warmly as the nighttime air along the Watauga River can be chilly and damp. This event is free of charge and is sure to be an exciting evening with family and friends! In the event of extremely inclement winter weather, contact the park about program cancelations and park office closings.

My name is Lyla !!! I am 4 1/2 yrs old, shy and independent, so I come to

love to be petted, but not fond of being picked up. I play well with other cats, kids over 12 and I’m
litter trained. It is unknown if I am good with dogs but I might be if they are small. I have been spayed, current on my vaccinations and microchipped.
This handsome boy is Leo. He’s a 4 yr old Pit Bull Terrier that loves people. Leo is very affectionate and loves to lay on you. He needs to be the only pet, as he does not get along with other dogs and NO cats. He would be a great companion for an adult household. Leo loves to run and play and is strong and energetic, so he wouldn’t be good with younger children. He knows basic commands, takes treats
easily, loves to go on walks, is great on a leash, has been neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped. Leo will require a fenced-in yard, with at least a 6 ft fence - he’s a jumper and quite the acrobat in his kennel - that’s how he stays so fit and trim. He would love to have a new family to love on.

Halloween is almost here.
Halloween is almost here. Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2022 will occur on Monday, October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trickor-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats. Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.
Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated
Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
On May 13, 609 A.D., Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, and the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day was established in the Western church. Pope Gregory III later expanded the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs and moved the observance from May 13 to November 1. By the 9th century, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands, where it gradually blended with and supplanted older Celtic rites. In 1000 A.D., the church made November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honor the dead. It’s widely believed today that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, church-sanctioned holiday. All Souls’ Day was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils. The All-Saints’ Day celebration was also called Allhallows or All-Hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the traditional night of Samhain in the Celtic religion, began to be called AllHallows Eve and eventually Halloween. Halloween Comes to America. The celebration of Halloween was extremely limited in colonial New England because of the rigid Protestant belief systems there. Halloween was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. As the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups and the American Indians meshed, a distinctly American version of Halloween began to emerge. The first celebrations included “play parties,” which were public events held to celebrate the harvest. Neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other’s fortunes, dance and sing. Colonial Halloween festivities also featured the telling of ghost stories and mischief-making of all kinds. By the middle of the 19th century, annual autumn festivities were common, but Halloween was not yet celebrated everywhere in the country. In the second half of the 19th century, America was flooded with new immigrants. These new immigrants, especially the millions of Irish fleeing the Irish Potato Famine, helped to popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally.
History of Trick-or-Treating: Borrowing from European traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today’s “trick-or-treat” tradition.
season and festive costumes. Parents were encouraged by newspapers and community leaders to take anything “frightening” or “grotesque” out of Halloween celebrations. Because of these efforts, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious overtones by the beginning of the twentieth century. By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular but community-centered holiday, with parades and town-wide Halloween parties as the featured entertainment. Despite the best efforts of many schools and communities, vandalism began to plague some celebrations in many communities during this time. By the 1950s, town leaders had successfully limited vandalism and Halloween had evolved into a holiday directed mainly at the young. Due to the high numbers of young children during
the fifties baby boom, parties moved from town civic centers into the classroom or home, where they could be more easily accommodated. Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-ortreating was also revived.
Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration.
In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats. Thus, a new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow.
Today, Americans spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday after Christmas.

Young women believed that on Halloween they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn, apple parings or mirrors. In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks, and witchcraft. At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. Parties focused on games, foods of the

It’s no secret when it comes to autumn cuisine, apples are the star of the show. For generations in the south, we’ve centered an entire season around this versatile fruit, making memories and family traditions in celebrating its harvest, from apple picking at the orchard to churning apple butter. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite quick, easy and (most important) delicious ways to enjoy fall’s favorite piece of produce, from hors d’oeuvres to desserts. And with these yummy recipes racking up the recommended apple a day, we should expect to keep the doctors at bay for quite some time!
My first and most underappreciated way to enjoy an apple is the simplest way- raw! There is hardly anything more satisfying than the tart-but-sweet snap of a perfectly ripe slice, but when perfectly paired with a gourmet cheese it’s positively heavenly. A classic duo that belongs on any cheese board has to be Granny Smith with Stilton bleu cheese. Whether you’re caught off guard by an unexpected visitor or aiming to impress a house-full of guests, serving up this quick and easy appetizer is sure to satisfy. Pop open a bottle of fruit-forward Prosecco, lay out a variety of water crackers and enjoy!
Salads are also a great way to incorporate apples into your menu. When serving my fruits against crisp greens, I like the addition of something a bit chewy for a softer mouthfeel; thankfully dried cranberries are another seasonal flavor that plays nicely with apples.
Apples of my Eyes
Lately I’ve tossed together a few healthy handfuls of spring mixed greens, a diced tart apple, and sprinkles of dried cranberries (or raisins), pepitas (or pecans, or walnuts) and goat cheese. This harvest fruit-n-nut salad is perfect the way it is or add a piece of protein for a complete meal! You can either drizzle your favorite bottled balsamic or whip up your own dressing using EVOO, apple cider vinegar, honey, Dijon mustard, and cracked salt and pepper.
When it comes to weeknight entrees, I stay so busy that “quick with minimal cleanup” is my top priority. And while I typically don’t eat a ton of pork, a guaranteed way I will enjoy it is cooked with apples. Enter this deliciously easy oneskillet dish. Frankly, the marinade for the pork is almost identical to the above salad dressing, which goes to show just how versatile these classic flavors and pantry staples can be. Just generously salt and pepper a 2-3lb pork tenderloin, then whisk together 3T olive oil, 3T Dijon mustard, 1/2C brown sugar, 1T minced garlic and 2T apple juice. Rub the pork with the mix, then cook it in a preheated medium skillet for about 10 minutes, turning every so often to ensure even cooking. Slice 2 apples into wedges and add those to the skillet and cook until pork is white and cooked through. Garnish with fresh thyme when serving.
If apples don’t need to be the star of the meal, they always make a welcome side dish. One of my favorites growing up and now is classic cooked apples. My grandma used to make these and they are spectacular in their simplicity; just butter, apples, brown sugar and spice! I found a recipe online that
adds a bit of nutmeg and vanilla extract, plus cornstarch water at the end to thicken, but that’s all optional. Play around and make these your own!
I also love to add diced apples to a box of Stove Top when I’m cutting corners during the holidays. I make my entire meal from scratch, but one time-saver I thoroughly enjoy is boxed dressing, dressed up with my own secret ingredients. Just dice up onions, celery and apples, boil with 1 can of chicken broth and half a stick of butter per box, then when everything is boiling and softened stir in the boxed dressing mix, cover and set for 5 minutes. Just before serving dinner, I like to scoop it into a glass baking dish and bake in the oven about 15 minutes so the top gets nice and crispy. The mix of sweet and savory never makes the guests question its authenticity. Finally, one of my ultimate fall favorites- apple crisp. To me, there is nothing that warms the soul better than a big bowl of apple crisp straight from the oven, topped with vanilla bean ice cream. While any apples will do, in my opinion honeycrisp is the way to go here. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, greese or butter an 8x8 dish and set aside. In a bowl, mix 6 peeled and chopped apples, 2T granulated sugar, 3/4tsp cinnamon and 1 1/2tsp lemon juice and transfer to greased baking dish. Next combine 1C light brown sugar, 3/4C old fashioned oats, 3/4C all purpose flour, 1tsp cinnamon, a pinch of salt and 1/2C cold unsalted butter cut into small cubes. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the mix until its broken down to pea-sized balls, then spread it evenly over the apples in the dish and bake for 45 minutes until golden brown and

bubbly. Serve in a bowl with a fat scoop of quality vanilla bean ice cream and snuggle up with your favorite scary movie.
In the way of beverages there’s no shortage of ciders on the market, but I really love liquid apples in mimosa form. Using my juicer, I fresh juice apples and add a splash to bubbles at brunch, served in a caramel rimmed champagne flute. If you don’t have a juicer or just don’t want the hassle, a half gallon of your favorite apple cider will work just as nicely.
I hope these recipes serve as inspiration for adding some apples to your own meals in the coming week! Feel free to experiment and share! I truly believe there’s no better way to show love than by feeding someone a home-cooked meal, especially when it’s made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

The Munsters
"The Munsters" burst onto television screens in 1964 on the CBS television network and have been watched by millions over the years and are a part of mainstream pop culture. The Munsters have come back in various forms over the years, mostly met with disappointment as the magic of the original show could not be captured. The Munsters have returned in 2022 thanks to, of all people, singer and filmmaker Rob Zombie, best known for his "R" rated horror films. Rob takes on America's favorite monster family (no offense to The Addams Family) in the new "PG" rated family film. I never thought I would say "family film" and Rob Zombie in the same sentence. Nevertheless, we have the 2022 version of "The Munsters" starring Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman, and Daniel Roebuck as The Count. The storyline begins with us witnessing the creation of Herman in a laboratory, and with the help of electricity, brings his Frankenstein to life and names Herman Munster. Meanwhile, we meet The Counts ex-wife Zoya (Catherine Schell) who recruits The Counts werewolf son Lester (Tomas Boykin) to convince The Count to see his Transylcanian castle so she can turn it into a theme park and casino. When The Count hears of the plan, he scoffs at the idea and is more concerned about finding a husband
for daughter Lily. After a horribly failed date, Lily and the Count are watching an episode of "Good Morning Transylvania", and Lily witnesses the unveiling of Herman, and is immediately attracted to his unusual personality. Herman soon becomes a celebrity thanks to being the lead singer in the band The Punk Rods. One evening Lily attends a performance of The Punk Rods and goes backstage in order to meet Herman. Upon seeing Lily, Herman falls for the beautiful vampire, and the two are soon cavorting on dates and falling in love. When Lily takes Herman home to meet her father, The Count is not at all impressed, due to his less-than-intelligent demeanor. Despite her father's disapproval of Herman, Lily accepts Herman's marriage proposal, and the duo plan their wedding. At the wedding, Herman meets Lester for the first time and he convinces Herman to sign the deed to the castle over to Zoya promising a windfall of profit.
does set up for a possible sequel, so we shall see. I have heard quite a few negative comments about this film, so I went into my viewing with cautious expectations. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the film. Is this film wonderful? No. Is it a fun romp with some classic characters? Yes. All the actors do their best to capture the essence of the characters and how the original actors portrayed them. I will give kudos to the actors, as I think they did an admirable job. Plus, Rob can actually direct a
family film! The film often salutes the original series, and features appearances by two famous movie monsters. I don't know about anyone else, but I had a fun time with "The Munsters" and plan on making the film a Halloween viewing tradition. Now on Blu-ray, DVD and streaming on various outlets including Netflix and Amazon Prime. (Rated PG)

When Herman and Lily are on their honeymoon in Paris, frightening all who see them, Herman captures a creature who has been haunting the sewers of Paris for years, and the newlyweds take the creature home and call him Spot. When they arrive home, The Count and Lily are both upset that Herman has fallen for Lester's scheme, leaving them homeless. However, when watching an episode of the television show "Zombo", Herman is convinced they can move to Hollywood and he can become a famous star. The family make the move to America and take up residence we all know as 1313 Mockingbird Lane. The later part of the film involves a Halloween party, at which their neighbors think the family is in costume, and give them prize money. The next morning, after thinking the neighbors really looked like their Halloween appearances, discover to their shock they do not, and are among "normal" people. At the conclusion of the film, Herman begins work at a funeral parlor, and Lester visits with a pleasant surprise for the family. The ending

Mark of the Hyde
Just in time for Spooky Season, Warner Archive brings two movies to blu-ray for the first time. Both films have been long overdue for an HD upgrade and it’s a great treat to see them looking the best they ever have on home video. From 1931 we have Fredric March in the fantastic, and Oscar-winning, role of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” then from 1935, Tod Browning gives us the very fun horror/mystery “Mark of the Vampire” reuniting him with “Dracula” star Bela Lugosi.
Back in May Warner Archived released the 1941 MGM film “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” on blu-ray. At the time I commented that I hoped the superior 1931 version would come soon. Though MGM’s take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story is the “prestigious” film, it lacks the punch and bite of director Rouben Mamoulian’s take for Paramount.
I’m going to assume I don’t need to tell you the plot of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” but just in case here’s a quick rundown. A brilliant doctor is experimenting with the nature and duality of man, he is a kind, considerate person. But the good doctor makes a potion in hopes to tap into his primitive side, and in doing so he transforms into a raw, animalistic monster. There have been many adaptations of this material over the years, and they all owe a debt to this movie, which to this day I feel reminds
the best film version.
Fredric March is brilliant in the title role, he well deserved that Oscar and is hands down one of the finest actors who ever lived. The transformations in this movie are still stunning and iconic, the way March’s face was warped into the evil Hyde was so experimental the makeup almost did serious damage to his skin. Being a “pre-code” horror film parts of the movie have been out in censored versions as more suggestive sequences had to be cut down for future releases, this new blu-ray gives the complete film in its full 96-minute form.
The 1080p HD transfer is a revelation of what has come before. Where prior home video releases were scratchy and washed out, we have a rich and deep black-and-white image. It’s arguably better than the film looked when it was out in theaters in December of 1931. Bonus material is nicely done on this blu-ray too.
The commentary with historian Greg Mank from the original DVD is carried over, and a new commentary with historians Dr. Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr has been added. Both are great tracks and well worth a listen. A fun extra is the 1955 Bugs Bunny cartoon “Hyde and Hare,” and the cherry on top is a 1950 radio take on the story with March reprising his Academy Awardwinning role.
Despite forever being known to time as Count Dracula, Bela Lugosi only played a vampire four times on film. Twice as Dracula, and twice as unrelated vampires in other movies. One of those films is Tod Browning’s “Mark of the Vampire.”
A remake of Browning’s lost 1927 movie “London After Midnight,” “Mark of the Vampire” is very interesting in the horror cannon.
Vampire” such an interesting film. It’s a horror movie, but also a comedy that downright plays as a satire of Horror tropes of the era, some of which Browning himself helped to establish.
Lionel Barrymore plays a professor who has been called to investigate a strange murder, where the victim was found with two punch marks on his neck and the body drained of blood. Vampires!? Or maybe something else trying to appear to be a vampire?
I have a soft spot for this film as it’s such a great deal of fun and the truly strange twist at the end makes the whole thing seem like such a lark for the era. Though it doesn’t reach up the comedic highs as “The Bride of Frankenstein,” you could argue it’s the “flip side” to “Dracula.” “Mark of the Vampire” has always looked very rough on home video, so this new blu-ray is a
stunning experience.
The image is sharp, clear, rich, and detailed. Again, I’d say it never looked this good when prints were delivered new to theaters. Warner Archive carries over the extras from the DVD release, a very good commentary with historians Kim Newman and Steven Jones, plus a theatrical trailer. They add a short, “A Thrill for Thelma” and a cartoon, “The Calico Dragon.”
Warner Archive has done it once more with two great additions to your home library just in time for Halloween.
If you’re a fan of these movies—as I am—seeing them looking restored and the best they’ve ever looked will be an absolute treat for you. Both discs are highly recommended. See you next week.

When Universal found massive success with Horror movies in the early 1930s, other studios wanted to try to get a taste of the business for themselves. MGM was the prestige studio and they were a bit more cautious about dipping their toes into the horror vein. Due to the success of “Dracula”, they hired its director to come and make some movies for them.
At the studio, Browning would make his most notorious film 1932’s “Freaks,” the failure of which about ended his career.
