Let’s Get Social! your week’s line-up columns & reviews NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER Hello Friends! American Education Week! Definitely a very important topic for our younger generation. I admire teachers very much as their job is very hard. November is already speeding by us headed to Thanksgiving. The months seem to disappear so fast and Christmas will be here before we know it. When are you decorating? I saw some people on social media putting up their trees and the stores have quickly filled their shelves with Santa goodies! I hope that everyone has a wonderful week! Hello everyone, hope you remembered to set your clocks back an hour. Our days are still warm enough to ride and we can still ride with the chiller nights as long as we gear up for it. Please stay safe, watch out for others, and keep your knees in the breeze as much as possible.
Veterans Day Is November 11th, Legally, two minutes of silence is recommended to be observed at 2:11pm Eastern Standard Time. Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces (who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who had died while in military service. Another military holiday that also occurs in May, Armed Forces Day, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally, Women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honor women who have served in the U.S. military.
On November 11, 1919, U.S. president Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen on the first Armistice Day, in which he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans:
ADDRESS TO FELLOW-COUNTRYMEN The White House, November 11, 1919. (Quote) A year ago today our enemies laid down their arms in accordance with an armistice which rendered them impotent to renew hostilities and gave to the world an assured opportunity to reconstruct its shattered order and to work out in peace a new and more just set of international relations. The soldiers and people of the European Allies had fought and endured for more than four years to uphold the barrier of civilization against the aggressions of armed force. We ourselves had been in the conflict something more than a year and a half. With splendid forgetfulness of mere personal concerns, we remodeled our industries, concentrated our financial resources, increased our agricultural output, and assembled a great army, so that at the last our power was a decisive factor in the victory. We were able to bring the vast resources, material and moral, of a great and free people to the assistance of our associates in Europe who had suffered and sacrificed without limit in the cause for which we fought. Out of this victory there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert. The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes, and the victory of arms foretells the enduring conquests which can be made in peace when nations act justly and in furtherance of the common interests of men. To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.
Useless Facts:
1. It Wasn’t Always Called Veterans Day. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, and it was meant to be a day that celebrated the victory of the Allied forces during World War I.
2. Americans Aren’t the Only Ones Who Celebrate November 11th Many countries around the world also celebrate November 11th (but as Remembrance Day rather than Veterans Day or Armistice Day).
3. Though Germany was the head of the Central Powers during WWI, a lot of time has passed since then. Germany doesn’t celebrate Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, or Veterans Day as many of us do. They instead practice something known as Volkstrauertag, which has also been called the National Day of Mourning, as well as silent day.
4. The Red Poppy Has a Purpose (and a Poem) The WWI battlefield was a place where no life could flourish or even survive. After the fighting ceased and the bombings stopped, however, the ravaged land began to heal as nature took its course. During the healing process, red poppies bloomed and gave new life to the death-tainted landscape of WWI.
THE POAM: Canadian physician LieutenantColonel John McCrae wrote a heart-wrenching poem, In Flanders Fields, depicting the visage of the war-torn, poppy-filled battlefields. (In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky
have served. The day may be dedicated to Veterans, but Veterans do not own it.
6. There Are More Women Veterans Than You Think. At ease, men! Women make up approximately10%of the Veteran population. By 2025, that number could reach 12%.
7. You’re Most Likely to Find a Woman Vet in Maryland. As many as17%of the women in Maryland are Vets.
8. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act Changed the Observed Date. Congress signed the Uniform Monday Holiday Actin 1968, and it went into effect in 1971. This created a three-day weekend of four holidays: Memorial Day, Washington’s Birthday, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day. However, it also changed the observed date of Veterans Day from November 11th to the fourth Monday in October. This sparked outrage among the population, and the date was changed back for the following years celebrations.
9. There Is a National Moment of Silence for Veterans Day.
By Anne Hartley
WOODROW WILSON. (Un-quote) Because it is a federal holiday, some American workers and many students have Veterans Day off from work or school. When Veterans Day falls on a Saturday then either Saturday or the preceding Friday may be designated as the holiday, whereas if it falls on a Sunday it is typically observed on the following Monday. When it falls on the weekend many private companies offer it as a floating holiday where employees can choose some other day. Non-essential federal government offices are closed. No mail is delivered. All federal workers are paid for the holiday; those who are required to work on the holiday sometimes receive holiday pay for that day in addition to their wages.
The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow. In Flanders fields.)
5. There’s a Reason It Isn’t Spelled with an Apostrophe. For those of you who failed your primary school English courses, the apostrophe would be the little curly mark between the N and the S, denoting possession. Veterans Day is spelled as it is for a very specific reason. Veterans Day is not a day that belongs to Veterans or is owned by Veterans in any capacity. It is a day for everyone, regardless of if they’ve served or not, to reflect on the sacrifices of people who
10. The Last U.S. WWI Vet Died in 2011. The last living U.S. WWI Veteran is not so far removed from us. Only a decade ago, Frank Buckles passed away, making him the final surviving U.S. WWI Vet. Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army all the way back in 1917 when he was only 16 years old. He drove ambulances and motorcycles in Europe close to the front lines. He also served in WWII, where he was captured by Japanese forces and had to spend three years as a civilian prisoner in the Philippines.
11. The War Didn’t Actually End on 11/11/1918. You’ve surely heard about the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. While this was when the armistice, calling for a (temporary) cessation of hostilities, was signed, it was not the official end of the War. The ending of World War I is officially marked by the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France on June 28, 1919. However, we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th because that date marked the beginning of the end of WWI.

As great of an invention as social media is, you're doing yourself a disservice staying connected 24/7.
The internet has us constantly connected to the world, but has also kept us tied to the devices that keep us connected. We're on our phones through dinners, movies, dates, nights out with friends, and meetings. We've become so connected to the internet that we've become disconnected from the parts of life that make us who we are.
Put your phone on airplane mode once in a while and enjoy the beauty of the world around you. Enjoy life without the camera. Give yourself time with no notifications just to relax. Social media will be there. Life only happens once. Social media may always be on, but you don't have to be.
Do you ever turn notifications off and just forget the world for a little while?

What Makes Dining “Fine”?
I’m a woman who loves good food and drink.
Thanks to my chosen profession, I’ve been afforded invaluable experiences in the world of culinary craftsmanship, and if someone were to ask me what my hobbies are, I think one glance at my bank account would support the statement that fine wine and dining is how I fill my free time.
Traditionally, fine dining is demarcated by a certain code of etiquette- clearly defined courses, served atop crisp linens, marked by changes in flatware… and it usually carries a hefty price tag. But I don’t always align with that thought, as I’ve had 5 star experiences at a Chick-Fil-A that far exceeded $250 meals I’ve enjoyed inside glittering high rises in metropolitan cities. The common factor that determines whether I consider a meal “fine dining” comes down to one word- effortless. The experience should be so enjoyable and handled so properly that you as the guest doesn’t have a single thought beyond how good it is. The most important factor in the fine dining equation is the staff. You can tell immediately what kind of establishment you’re supporting by the behavior of their employees. People who are appreciated and compensated for their hard work by their management reflect that by taking pride in the job their doing. Even in fast food, it makes a world of difference in your experience if the person taking your order smiles, looks you in the eye, greets you properly and repeats your order to ensure its correctness. This always stands out to me, because typically in fast food restaurants you get someone
who keeps their eyes cast down, mumbles your total at you and sends you on your way. These people are not proud of the integrity of the work they’re conducting and who can blame them? They’re usually grossly underpaid for the labor they perform with little to no acknowledgement from their equally miserable superiors. Don’t believe me? Compare your experience at a Pal’s drive-thru to one at a McDonald’s.
Once someone takes pride in their work, it will reflect in their performance. They anticipate their guests’ needs and provide before the customer has to ask. Things like making sure drinks are never empty, removing empty plates so as not to clutter the table, and being wellinformed on the menu so they can properly describe dishes and offer suggestions. These are all hallmarks of fine dining, and also skills that don’t cost a dime but truly enhance a meal. One of my biggest pet peeves when I’m at a restaurant is to ask a question and receive “I don’t know” as an answer. I don’t expect a person to know every single thing, but it goes a long way to hear “that’s a great question and honestly not something I’m as well-versed on. Let me get someone over here who can better assist you with that.”
The next factor in determining if I had a “fine dining experience” is the quality of the food. Did the food meet quality standards of the industry standard with relation to the type of establishment in which I’m dining. Of course the filet I receive at Longhorn is not going to be of the same quality as the filet at Prime Steakhouse in the Bellagio Las Vegas. But is it quality compared to other Longhorns or equivalent restaurants I’ve eaten at? And did the meal meet basic expectations, like was it cooked and served properly, and if not, did the staff make swift work of rectifying
the situation accordingly? I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time in the service industry and I know mishaps happen frequently. Meat can be under/over cooked, sides can be forgotten…that’s life and I don’t deduct points. I also don’t expect to be given a free meal if my medium rare steak comes out medium well. What I do expect, once I’ve brought it to my server’s attention, is for them to immediately remove it, apologize and get to work on correcting it. If they offer a discount on my total or a free dessert, that’s a bonus. Were my vegetables tender, was my salad crisp and un-wilted, was my mac & cheese creamy or dry, all these are common proper serving standards for food and as long as they’re met, then the restaurant has done their job. There is no reason why you should EVER expect to have your meal totally comped unless something went horribly wrong like you swallowed broken glass or the cooks purposefully and maliciously altered your food. For the most part, a simple re-cook is all that’s required. Finally, a great bar program never hurt. This obviously applies to sitdown restaurants, but due to my experience in wine it always delights me to see a thoughtful beverage menu. Again, you have to take in to account whether this is a corporate or independent establishment and gauge accordingly; corporate places have mandated placements on their bar menu and little wiggle room to veer away from that. But if it’s an independent restaurant with full autonomy over beverage selections, I like to see wines that offer more variety than just California and a spirits selection that at minimum includes all the usual suspects. If you only offer a well vodka and Tito’s as your vodka options…why? Throw in bottle of Belvedere or better yet, Chopin, for good measure. There is

an entire planet popping at the seams with unique and beautiful versions of the same ol’ grapes you’re drinking out of California. How about instead of Meiomi Pinot Noir you mix it up and find a beautiful Burgundy at the same price? I mean, the grape originated there; put a little respect on its name.
I hope when taking these things into consideration, whether you’re reading this as a guest or a provider, that you realize a seamless, beautiful dining experience can be achieved on many levels. If you’re not in a position to drop hundreds of dollars on a single meal, find the place within your budget that exceeds the standard expectations and treat yourself. And don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten path; there are some amazing hole-in-the wall spots that will blow your mind if you’re willing to be adventurous.
Happy eating!

Black Adam
Black Adam is a comic book character many in the general public may not be familiar with, but the character first appeared in the comics in 1945. He was one of the archenemies of Captain Marvel/ Shazam, but later was altered to be a corrupted antihero. In present day DC comic books he is now a member of the Justice League. The character is now on the big screen in the film "Black Adam", starring Dwyane Johnson, who finally saw his dream come true of portraying Adam. In fact before the first "Shazam!" film came to be, he was pegged as the villain in said film, but then producers decided to give the character his own film. This was actually a great decision as both Shazam and Black Adam needed time to have their character origins presented and developed before their eventual showdown. The film also introduces some of the members of the Justice Society, further adding to the excitement around the project. The film begins in 2600 B.C. by introducing the fictional desert kingdom of Kahndaq, and its corrupt and tyrannical King AhkTon. The king has created a corrupt crown, which gives the wearer great power. Meanwhile, ala the "Shazam!" film, the Council of Wizards give a young slave boy the powers of Shazam (a great old wizard), making him the champion of Kahndaq, who is able to end the reign of the evil Ank-Ton. Guess what? The boy in question just happens to be the son of Johnson's character, which plays

a pivotal role in the creation of Black Adam, which I will not reveal here. The film moves forward to present day Kahndaq, which is being oppressed by the Intergang ( an organized crime syndicate appearing in DC comics). We then see a group of archaeologists, led by resistance fighter Adrianna Tomaz (Sarah Shahi), on a trip to retrieve the evil crown in order to keep it out of the hands of Intergang. When they find the crown, the group is attacked by Intergang, and in an effort to save their lives, Adrianna reads the incantation that awakens Black Adam, first known as Teth-Adam. Adam immediately proves to be unbeatable and begins taking down all of the present members of Intergang. The awakening of Adam is discovered by US government official Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who deems Adam a threat and contacts some members of the Justice Society: Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan) to take Adam in custody. When the JS arrives in Kahndaq, they are able to prevent Adam from furthering his destructive actions in his country, but have a hard time convincing Adrianna and her son Amon( Bodhi Sabongui) that Adam is not the hero they hoped for but a madman who was actually imprisoned. The battle to capture Adam is very exciting, and doesn't end in the favor of the JS, as they realize the mighty power of who they are dealing with. The story also involves several betrayals, more fights between the JS and Adam, and a revelation that surprises the JS, as told by Adam to Hawkman. Eventually everything in the story calms down until a new threat emerges in the form of Sabbac, a newly formed demon via one of the human characters, who is out to claim the throne of Kahndaq. This sets up the final battle of the film pitting the powerful Sabbac against the JS, and later Adam, who had agreed to be taken into custody by Waller's order, but is needed to help take down Sabbac. The film has almost continuous action, and the dialogue between the ancient Adam and Amon is great. All the characters are great, with Johnson leading the way with
his commanding performance as Adam, but the one revelation for me was Hodge as Hawkman. Hawkman needs a stand-alone film now! Hodge was mesmerizing as the character, and was never overshadowed in his interactions with Johnson. In addition, Brosnan's Dr. Fate was also a standout, with the character's mystical powers combined with Brosnan's acting chops equalling a great cinematic experience. I was able to see the film on a super large screen, and was glad I did, as this was a film that deserves the format. "Black Adam" is far from a typical
superhero film, and that is what I liked most about it. I really enjoyed the introduction of the Justice Society, and I hope we see more of them. The film has a great post credit scene you must stay for, and you may have already seen it online. Johnson has finally been able to see his dream project a reality, and I, for one, am glad he did. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13)

Czech director Vera Chytilova’s 1966 film “Daisies” is an arthouse classic. An absurdist, almost dadaist call to rebellion and perhaps the crown jewel of the Czech film new wave. I’d seen stills and snippets from the film before I first saw it sometime in 2020. The Criterion Collection first released the film on DVD a decade ago as part of a box set from their Eclipse line of releases “Pearls of the Czech New Wave.”
The print included in that DVD, which is what I first saw, looked fine. But the film looked a bit washed out and rough around the edges. Now part of this I assumed was the intended look of the film. “Daisies” has a unique visual pallet that makes it stand out right off the bat. Often shifting from color to black and white, to stock footage, and strangely cut-out images. Now out on blu-ray for the first time, Criterion revisits “Daisies” and releases it on its own for the first time in a truly stunning edition
Daisies
from a brand new 4K restoration of the film.
“Daisies” is about two young women, both named Marie, who come to one simple conclusion. If the world is so bad, then why shouldn’t we be bad as well? The two Maries decided to set out on a course of hedonism and gleeful breaking of all norms. Often conning men for elaborate meals. As the two Maries go about their brand of anarchic rebellion, the film does stop to ask “What happens when the party is over?”

The visual language of “Daisies” is one of the most striking things about the movie when you first see it. As I said earlier, I thought the film had a sort of “washed out” look to it on purpose. Not so. This new blu-ray from Criterion shows a film that looks almost radically different from the prior print they released. The new 4K restoration this bluray is sourced from was made from a scan of the original 35mm camera negative. The results are mind-blowing. I knew “Daisies” was a film shot in color and used the color to good effect, but I never thought of it as a “colorful” film before. The depth and clarity this new restoration brings to the film is a revelation. That washed-out appearance is gone. In its place is an image that is clear, sharp, and gritty when it’s supposed to be, but imbued with a vibrancy that I’ve never seen this film have before.
The Czech audio track is clear and sharp as well, remastered from the original optical sound negative and magnetic mixing tapes. Another plus is a brand
new English subtitle translation. It doesn’t affect the film too much but does change a few words here and there. To be honest, I found the new translation makes the film a bit easier to follow. This is still a surreal film we’re talking about. Bonus material begins with a very good commentary track with scholars Daniel Bird and Peter Hames. A new interview with film programmer Arena Kovarova, two documentaries about the filmmakers, and two short films from Chytilova is included as well. They’re capped
off by the new restoration trailer and an essay by critic Carmen Gray.
The new blu-ray of “Daisies” is a revelation of the actual quality of how the film looks. Well over 50 years after its debut the remains a unique, wild ride of a film that is both a work of art and weird as hell. Its influence is far-reaching to, even to a music video by one of my favorite bands Ex Hex. This new disc is highly recommended and well worth your time. See you next week.
