The Loafer Celebrates No Shave Novermber
It is the time of year to remember what gives us thankfulness. Thanksgiving! I am thankful for so much: my husband and 11 children who keep me on my toes, 8 awesome grandkids that keep us young, our home my family built with our own hands and the gorgeous property it sits on, my health, and this iconic paper! What are you thankful for? Remember that even in the darkest of days we can always find a small sliver of light. Look for that light instead of focusing on the bad. Eat turkey and dressing with stuffing and all the goodies.

The Next Act: Kingsport Ballet’s Nutcracker Returns To The Stage Under New Artistic Leadership
Kingsport Ballet’s Nutcracker returns to the stage a bit earlier than usual this holiday season – December 9-11, 2022 - at Wellmont Performing Arts Center, with Leonid Flegmatov as artistic director and performer of the charismatic character, Herr Drosselmeyer.
Mr. Flegmatov is a former principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet and a graduate of the famed Bolshoi Academy of Ballet. He danced internationally with the Moscow Ballet prior to moving to the United States. He has danced as a principal dancer in the U.S. for 17 years with such companies as Columbia Classical Ballet, Miami City Ballet, and Grand Rapids Ballet, before his ten-year tenure with New Jersey. He has been teaching and performing with Kingsport Ballet since 2019 and guest taught and performed with the company on numerous occasions before then.
Principal dancer Sergii Sydorski will once again join the cast as the Nutcracker Prince and will partner Kingsport Ballet company dancers Anna Stephenson and Bess Ramey. The young ladies have been Kingsport Ballet students and company members for 12 years and are now members of the senior company.
Mr. Flegmatov received the “best teacher” award during the Jewels Festival, hosted in Kingsport in February of this year. He believes the students’ best training opportunity comes with the hard work that is
required to prepare for a challenging role usually reserved for guest artists. “We want to show our audiences that a lot is possible with the right training and the dedication put in by the dancers. They must prepare for demanding physical performance and mental strength, and they are doing a great job,” said Mr. Flegmatov.
The cast is made up of young dancers from around the region.
The company will once again host Clara’s Tea Party. Children dress up in their holiday finest for holiday tea and delicious goodies, they meet and are photographed with some of the cast members in costume and take home a special Nutcracker souvenir. Tickets to the tea are $12.
Tickets are for sale now online through Kingsport Ballet’s website: www.kingsportballet.org or by calling 423-378-3967

Hello everyone, hope your Holiday season is going well. First Halloween now its Thanksgiving and before too long it will be Christmas. There are still some warm days to put our knees in the breeze, but for those few who still ride in the cold, get those leather jackets, chaps, gloves and full-face helmets out and let’s roll.
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and Thanksgiving 2022 occurs on Thursday, November 24. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the "New World." After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip
of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth.
Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from a member of the Abenaki tribe who greeted them in English.
Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans.
to schoolchildren. In their view, the traditional narrative paints a deceptively sunny portrait of relations between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people, masking the long and bloody history of conflict between Native Americans and European settlers that resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands. Since 1970, protesters have gathered on the day designated as Thanksgiving at the top of Cole’s Hill, which overlooks Plymouth Rock, to commemorate a “National Day of Mourning.” Although the American concept of Thanksgiving developed in the colonies of New England, its roots can be traced back to the other side of the Atlantic. Both the Separatists who came over on the Mayflower and the Puritans who arrived soon after brought with them a tradition of providential holidays, days of fasting during difficult or pivotal moments and days of feasting and celebration to thank God in times of plenty.
Useless Facts:
proclaiming the fourth Thursday of every November as the national Thanksgiving Day.
5. Thanksgiving in the US is also known as American Thanksgiving to differentiate it from the Canadian Thanksgiving, which became a national holiday in 1879.
6. Thanksgiving is the second favorite holiday among American adults, behind Christmas and ahead of Halloween.
7. In Europe, Thanksgiving is popularly known as Erntedank (“harvest thanksgiving festival”).
8. Thanksgiving is the most popular day in the U.S. for racing.
9. Traditionally, a typical Thanksgiving dinner comprises turkey stuffing, roast turkey, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, corn, pumpkin pie, gravy, and green beans, and other foods.
By Anne Hartley
In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance; instead, it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple so ubiquitous it has become all but synonymous with the holiday, may or may not have been on offer when the Pilgrims hosted the inaugural feast in 1621. Today, however, nearly 90 percent of Americans eat the bird, whether roasted, baked or deep-fried on Thanksgiving. Parades have also become an integral part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route. Some Native Americans and many others take issue with how the Thanksgiving story is presented to the American public, and especially
1. Ninety Wampanoag Native Americans and 50 Plymouth colonialists (Pilgrims) celebrated the first-ever autumn harvest celebration in 1621. While this celebration lasted three days, only five women were present.
2. According to the US National Archives, the first federal congress passed a resolution in 1789 requesting the then US president, George Washington, to name a national Thanksgiving Day. The president then proclaimed 26th November as the “Day of Public Thanksgiving” for that year.
3. Although subsequent presidents also proclaimed national thanksgiving days, the holidays fell on different days and months. However, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that Thanksgiving would be held on every last Thursday of November each year and that it would be a national holiday.
4. Since some Novembers had 5 Thursdays, the congress and senate made a new resolution in 1941 aimed at removing the confusion surrounding Thanksgiving. The then US President, Roosevelt, signed it,
10. Data from the US Poultry and Egg Association, Americans consume more than 45 million turkeys on Thanksgiving. Only male turkeys — appropriately named gobblers — actually make the sound. Female turkeys cackle instead.
11. According to the US Calorie Control Council (CCC), an average American may consume a whopping 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day.
12. On average, Americans purchase about 250 million pounds of potatoes as well as 77 million pounds of ham during Thanksgiving week.
13. Turkey is the most famous food consumed on Thanksgiving, to the point where Thanksgiving is sometimes colloquially called “Turkey Day.”
14. On the first Thanksgiving, Pilgrims and the Native Americans consumed freshly killed deer, cornbread, seafood, porridge, and assorted wildfowl, among other foods. However, turkey was not part of the Thanksgiving dinner.
15. There are three towns in the United States named “Turkey.” They can be found in Texas, Louisiana, and North Carolina.

Giving Thanks Without Breaking the Bank
by Kathie Scalf
certainly understand if we kept things to a minimum, as they’re much more modest people than myself, but I derive all my holiday joy from gifting the ones I love with a standout meal and memorable experiences while they’re visiting, especially considering how little they travel.
Whether you’re rolling in cash and just looking for more meaningful ways to bond during the holidays beyond posing for the perfect insta pic, or you’re like me and Butterballin’ on a budget, follow along while we explore some ways to give thanks without breaking the bank!
Somehow I’ve blinked and the holidays are upon us, with the Feast of a Thousand Yellow Carbs charging full steam ahead this week.
I was, and still am not, prepared. Between my busy work schedule keeping me on the road half the month and other pressing life matters, I have not taken a single step toward hosting my parents for 3 days and executing a multi-course holiday meal, my largest of the year.
With all that being said, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I will prevail, in spite of the laughable contents of my bank account and cryable workload on my plate. My parents would
When it comes to the main event, Thanksgiving dinner, there are plenty of ways to cut costs. Taking shortcuts in your preparation can save you time and money without compromising quality if you execute correctly. While shopping, most grocery stores have markdown sections, particularly on produce, where they’re practically giving away food that is going out of date the next day. Here you can find potatoes, apples, peppers, onions, squash, and citrus that are perfect for crafting your holiday meal. Check the markdown bakery racks for rolls, baguettes and desserts that can be dressed up with your own creative butter blends or sugary toppings. If you plate and top accordingly, no one will think for an instant that your pecan pie came courtesy of Kroger.
You can also cut corners by getting a little help from your boxed friends. My absolute favorite holiday side dish is dressing, and it’s one of the only things I don’t do homemade, but I make it my own. Take a box of StoveTop and instead of boiling with water, swap it out with a can of flavorful chicken broth and half
a stick of butter. Add chopped onions, celery and apples and cook as directed in a pot. After it’s done, spread in a casserole dish and finish in the oven so the top gets nice and crispy. This dish costs less than $4 to make. If you want a cheaper and less time consuming alternative to fresh green beans, drain a couple cans of Italian cut, add to a skillet with butter, garlic and seasonings. And keep an eye out for deals on turkeys at your local supermarket; most of them run crazy cheap deals in conjunction with a small additional spend on groceries. For example, Kroger is running their turkeys on sale for $0.49/lb if you have a Kroger card and spend $25. Another fun alternative way to feed a crowd for cheap is to go potluck style! If you’re not married to tradition, I love this idea of the host handling the bird and telling everyone else to make and bring their favorite side dish. It’s an awesome way to get new recipes, learn more about your loved ones and you could even make it a fun contest to see whose is the most popular. I also think it’s perfectly ok to make your event BYOB if you’ve got a drinking crowd. As the host, make a big batch cocktail like festive fall sangria, then let everyone else bring their beverage of choice. Also, don’t be afraid to venture away from tradition and create your own memories! Nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you eat turkey and fixins. Make a big pan of lasagna or a pot of spaghetti that feeds a crowd, or even a “bring your own soup” party; the reason for this season is gratitude for all your many blessings and there’s no rule that says they have to be honored in feathered form.
Finally, if you’re seeking family fun that doesn’t involve spending
an arm and a leg at a crowded theme park, there are plenty of low budget options. I’m a huge fan of game nights, so pull out your family favorite board games that have been tucked away in storage. Instead of dragging everyone down to the theatre and dropping $20+ each for movie tickets, create the perfect home theatre experience with a build-your-own popcorn bar, cozy blanket and pillow forts, and old holiday classics. Or If you’re an outdoorsy family, bundle up and head for a hike to burn some of those leftover calories. We live in the best place on earth for exploring nature, and there are trails for all levels of hikers.
No matter how you spend your holiday, I hope the theme of gratitude and thanks is front and center. In an increasingly negative and divided world, this is a perfect opportunity to acknowledge our many blessings and appreciate the people who mean the most.

Enola Holmes 2
Millie Bobby Brown is back as young detective Enola Holmes, a role she originated in 2020, in "Enola Holmes 2", now playing on Netflix. Henry "Superman" Cavill also returns as her brother Sherlock, Helena Bonham Carter as her mother Eudoria, and Louis Partridge as love interest Lord Viscount Tewkesbury. As a result of the events in the first film, Enola has started her own detective agency, but finds living in the shadow of her famous brother to be challenging as clients who visit her are shocked to discover she is a "girl" and don't take her seriously. However, one day a young girl named Bessie (Seranna Su-Ling Bliss) visits Enola in the hope of hiring her to find her missing sister Sarah (Hannah Dodd). Enola is thrilled to have her first client, and begins immediate work on the case. Bess reveals she and Sarah work at a match factory where workers have been recently becoming ill and eventually dying from the infectious disease typhus. While most people think Sarah ran away, Bess is convinced her sister is in trouble. Enola's investigation begins in the match factory where she manages to sneak into an office where she discovers some missing pages from a leger, and overhears the

owner of the factory in a disturbing conservation. She also discovers the new white tipped matches used to have red tips, which proves to be a pivotal discovery. Enola also meets Mae (Abbie Hern), a hotheaded co-worker of Bess who will eventually lead Enola to another surprising discovery. Meanwhile, on the way home one night, Enola runs into her inebriated brother Sherlock, who has been unable to solve his latest case. She helps her brother with his case, and eventually the investigations the siblings have been working on cross paths, leading to a team-up. During the case Enola attends a ball to check out some suspects, which she is not accustomed to at all, and needs the assistance of her love interest Lord Viscount to teach her how to dance. While at the ball Enola is arrested for a suspected murder becasue she was found at the scene of the crime with blood on her hands. Shortly after she is sent to jail, she is about to be hanged but is rescued by her Mom and her cohort Edith (Susie Wokoma). After the rescue, a fun chase takes place involving horses and carriages that is a highlight of the movie and allows time for Enola and her Mom to have some great interactions. When she eludes capture again, Enola heads back to London to warn Bessie about the danger they are all in due to Sarah uncovering some important information at the match factory. Our detectives and their friends eventually have a showdown at the Paragon Theater with the film's bad guys, one of which comes as a pleasant surprise and is revealed to be one of Sherlock's most famous nemesis. The film ends satisfactorily for all the characters and the postcredits scene introduces another famous character from Sherlock lore, which will hopefully lead to a third film. This film is pure fun and I especially enjoyed the
fact that Cavill's Sherlock had a much larger role in the sequel, as his interactions with Brown are a highlight of the film. All the actors are wonderful, including Bonham Carter, who has a knack for playing eccentric characters to perfection. The script is crisp and sharp and the film moves at just the right pace for such a story. I also realized at the end I had not heard one curse word in the entire film, which
proves you can have a quality and fun story without cursing. If you haven't seen the original film or the sequel, I highly recommend both for excellent family entertainment and fun adventures with Enola Holmes and crew. Now streaming on Netflix. (Rated PG-13)

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
When it was announced that Daniel Radcliffe was playing national treasure “Weird Al” Yankovic in a biopic that would “go into detail of Al’s famous sordid life” I couldn’t help but laugh at all the reactions to people who seemed confused by it all. Al, famously one of the nicest, most clean living humans ever, was doing what he always has done. Parody. Though played as if it’s the gospel truth, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is the greatest song parodist of all time turning his eye to the musical biopic. There’s been a string of them lately. Between something like “Ray,” “Walk the Line,” or the more recent “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Elvis,” the form is ripe for parody. And simply put, “Weird Al” succeeded. I laughed so hard watching “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” that something happened the next day that I do not think has ever happened before. I was
a little hoarse from laughing.
“Weird” is an extremely funny, and appropriately, weird movie. For those of us who have been longtime, die-hard, “Weird Al” fans it’s full of easter eggs as well.
The movie tells the “100% authentic truth” of “Weird Al’s” life and career. Including his struggles with drinking, alienating his bandmates, and his famously torrid love affair with pop star Madonna, played by Evan Rachel Wood. Even in the press and interviews for “Weird”, the cast keeps this up by pointing out how true the story of Al’s life here is. No one winks about this, and it’s all the better.
There are bits of the actual truth to Al Yankovic’s story in the movie, but those kernels are exploded into exaggerated bits of popcorn. Al did learn the accordion due to a door-to-
door salesman, and legendary radio show host Dr. Demento did discover Weird Al. But Al growing up with parents who disapproved of what he liked, having a self-destructive alcoholic streak, and going into a fight with drug lord Pablo Escobar is, well, not true.
“Weird: The Al Yankovic” story is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a tourde-force of parody, random cameos, and wonderfully over-the-top absurdism that makes it a pure joy from start to finish. There are layers of it being a parody of the biopic, but the way it plays with those little kernels of truth from Al’s life makes it soar into rarefied air. It also is aided that Actual Weird Al is in the movie as a music executive.
Daniel Radcliffe plays the part of this “heightened” version of “Weird Al” perfectly. The
dramatic gravitas that Radcliffe uses makes it all the funnier. As in the moment where Al stares at a package of bologna as The Knack’s “My Sharona” plays on the radio and he has the serious eureka moment of writing his first successful song “My Bologna.”
This movie is exclusively on The Roku Channel and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s been a rough few years and this is the movie we all deserve. A funny, brash, strange, and appropriate demented look at the career of one of the most beloved musicians to have ever lived.
“Weird: The Al Yankovic” story is a gift for us all to enjoy this festive season. Seek it out, I think you’ll find it a wonderfully warp ride to take. See you next week.
